- mitikomon, on 06/01/2009, -1/+18you're right. After 7 years, Afghan government begin filtering Internet[1] , throwing thousands of books into the Helmand River[2] and make martial rape legal[3].
peoples must demand freedom and democracy from their own government.

We can give people democracy through force, but after that we cannot guarantee they won't CHOOSE to follow an extremist ideology.
Just sayin' - apackofmonkeys, on 06/02/2009, -7/+16That is indeed what he SHOULD say. What he WILL say is "We're sorry that the Europeans resisted the unprovoked Muslim invasions that started the Crusades, we are bad people" or something similarly ass-backwards.
- tpmidd, on 06/02/2009, -5/+13"durka durka mohammed jihad sherpa sherpa bak allah"
- inactive, on 06/02/2009, -2/+10I agree. Let's stop messing with them. Let's stop needing their oil.
How long have some people been trying to open up drilling here in the US? Who has been stopping it? Why don't we build more nuclear power plants? Who has been stopping that? Natural gas? ***** no! We can't drill for that either. Who stopped that?
We could have been out of there a long time ago if some people hadn't stopped us from developing our own sources of fuel. - tpmidd, on 06/02/2009, -2/+10Read up on how Mohammed "converted" Mecca and Medina when the Muslim faith was created. Then talk to me about how the religion doesn't promote violence.
- inactive, on 06/02/2009, -3/+11We? As in "The US"?
Where's England and France in all this? Why aren't they going around apologizing? - TheInformer, on 06/02/2009, -10/+17The Arab folks are just as likely to listen to Obama as North Korea listened to Jimmy Carter.
- bradleyland, on 06/02/2009, -1/+8What Obama should tell Muslims:
"Alright everybody, be cool. Just be cool." - FyberOptic, on 06/02/2009, -3/+10Why does Obama need to tell them anything? Just leave them alone. They hate us, they will likely always hate us, so leave it be. There's nothing you can do to satisfy people like that. They expect us to roll over and cater to their whims. Which, unfortunately, we tend to do. And the sorts of little things I'm referring to were going on even when Bush was president. If "all men are created equal", then how about we stop seeing muslims as if they deserve special treatment and coddling?
It's time to let the rest of the world deal with their crybaby ***** for a while. If they want to get nukes, then let Europe and China go yell at them. America has enough on its plate right now. We shouldn't have to keep being the world's babysitter just because nobody else will step up and do anything. - ChrisOrr, on 06/02/2009, -5/+11I weep for our world when I see these posts
- nullvector, on 06/02/2009, -0/+6LOL.
- inactive, on 06/02/2009, -3/+9You're high.
The answer is LESS government, not more. What is it with you? - inactive, on 06/02/2009, -3/+9Because at some point the market will demand it all by itself without government intervention.
- Wargala, on 06/02/2009, -1/+7If Muslims have a problem with what's going on in Pakistan/Afghanistan, I have a problem with those Muslims.
We're there because of 9/11, and if they supported that, I support their slaughter. - kingmanic, on 06/02/2009, -2/+8Thats like being the 5th smartest kid on the short bus. That is a very low bar to compare people to. Saudi Arabia is treated well by the US for it's oil. As soon as that dries up no one will care about Saudi Arabia except Islam (mecca is there). It seems the oil has hit it's peak. The main well sites are returning more contaminated water than oil and exploration costs have increased dramatically with much less new sources.
- inactive, on 06/02/2009, -1/+6So let me get this straight...
Obama is going to "moderate" muslims who couldn't have been "moderated" before because of Bush?
I'm of the opinion that no amount of ass kissing is going to moderate anyone who hasn't already denounced terrorism. If they haven't started ratting out the terrorists among them by now, Obama isn't going to sweet talk them into it. - inactive, on 06/02/2009, -3/+8Then stop bitching about us "meddling in the middle east" because that is the alternative until someone comes up with a commercially viable fuel that can compete.
And NO, the government should not be involved. - inactive, on 06/02/2009, -5/+10"The Bush administration's attempts to engender this alternative narrative fell flat - in large measure because, as the American presence in Iraq wore on, Muslims were in no mood to listen to President Bush."
But somehow, magically, Muslims will forget all about what is going on at the Pakistan / Afghan border?
How far up Obama's ass are these journalists, exactly? - inactive, on 06/02/2009, -3/+8So is that a "Yes, Muslims will magically forget about what is going on at the Pakistan / Afghan border?"
- scoottie, on 06/02/2009, -5/+10What he should tell them is "if you support terrorism we are going to make you suffer"
what he is telling them is "I am more interested in saving failing companies and giveing my friends billions of dollars to defend my country" - inactive, on 06/02/2009, -3/+8We should be doing it all...
We would have had the luxury of developing alternative fuels if we had been doing the stuff I mentioned above 20-30 years ago. - elcalrissian, on 06/01/2009, -15/+20Im glad the title of the article is what Obama SHOULD say....
I've been listening to him for 2 years straight now, and I know he only says what people want to hear, and lord knows the Arabs dont want to hear anything about human rights violations, or how their religion spawns terror. - inactive, on 06/02/2009, -3/+8The government caused the gas crisis by not allowing us to develop our domestic resources.
- atomheartmother, on 06/02/2009, -1/+6kingmanic: It was a quote and a question. Care to take a stab at answering it, rather than attacking the messenger?
- Bloodwine, on 06/02/2009, -3/+7Peace mother *****, do you speak it?
- inactive, on 06/02/2009, -4/+8And while we wait for that, the economy will tank harder than it already has.
The government needs to get out of the way. One day you'll realize this. Good bye. - inactive, on 06/02/2009, -1/+5I weep for our civilization when I read these posts.
- atomheartmother, on 06/02/2009, -1/+5What king is neglecting to mention rbiii, is that the reason he's not an Obama supporter is because he's Canadian. He is a leftie though, and as such doesn't comprehend the realities that exist in the world... that every country and people puts its own self-interests first and foremost, and in a lot of cases those interests are at odds with those of the US. The notion that diplomatic progress can be achieved with flowery language is a naive and misguided one, and though it may be lauded publicly for propaganda purposes, in a practical sense it's seen as weakness.
- ChrisOrr, on 06/02/2009, -5/+9mmmm mmmm love that crack
- inactive, on 06/02/2009, -1/+5orlandogeek, I was having a rational discussion with kingmaniac until he said this: He is not as invested in it's continuation as the previous administration was.
That's when the discussion ended because THAT was irrational truther *****. - inactive, on 06/02/2009, -1/+5And you really think Obama will do anything to stop that?
Wow. You need to step away from the kool-aid. - atomheartmother, on 06/02/2009, -1/+4And judging from his own commentary, orlando's idea of rational discussion is pasting Kos one-liners.
- inactive, on 06/02/2009, -2/+5"We would have devoloped alternative fuels and more effecient cars if we would have been taxing Gas like Europe has done for the last 30 years."
How has this worked in Europe? What alternative fuel have they developed? Yeah, that's what I thought... - Bagos1, on 06/02/2009, -1/+4Klaatu barata nikto to you too.

Bacon rocks and you can't have it. har har.
Sincerely,
President Obama - inactive, on 06/02/2009, -1/+3And as he's abandoning the only Democracy in the Middle East, they'll love him!!
- magamiako, on 06/02/2009, -9/+11The very fact that this article calls Iran "extremism" shows to me that this person knows nothing of what they are talking about.
Iran is a much more open Muslim society than Saudi Arabia--and we're good buddies with them. Iran allows women to attend school, to be seen without a husband--hell, the burka is even optional in Iran for a lot of women. Men and women, whom aren't married, can be seen walking down the street holding hands without getting shot.
This ran on CNN back in February: http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/world/2009/02/15/ ...
They still have a long way to go, but it is MUCH further than the countries we're already friends with. - CreativeLinks, on 06/02/2009, -0/+2Peace. Can....you.....DIG.....IT!?
- Bagos1, on 06/02/2009, -1/+3I would agree....without oil....the whole ME is a museum.
- HBZ55, on 06/02/2009, -3/+5What a laughably inaccurate article:
1- I'm Arab and every single person that I met doesn't like the Taliba nor do they condone what they're doing to their own people. We view them as savages and thugs who use Islam as a pretext for their actions. And everyone I met knows that Al Qaeda is a terrorist organisation and doesn't condone its actions.
2- Generally the Arab and Muslim world looks at Iranian leaders with respect, they're the only ones that stood up and at least said something against the astrocities Israel was doing in Gaza. Also Hamas isn't a proxy for Iran and it never was, that's just western propaganda, and Hezbollah is considered a legitimate resistance group and is immensely popular in the region. If he asks the people to turn against them it instantly ruin his credibility. The general Muslim public also views the Egyptian, Saudi Arabian and Jordanian leaders to be traitors and do not hold any respect for them.
3- The concept that American leaders support Democracy in the middle east was seriously hurt when the American government along with Israel started training and providing Fatah members with arms to overthrow the democratically elected Hamas government. We all know that Americans do not seek to democratize the Middle east, but only want to impose rulers who go by their agenda, meaning leaders who are actually pussies.
Also, if Obama wants to communicate with the Arab world, he needs to denounce the blatant bias the American government has always hadfor Israel, that would be very helpful. - induren, on 06/02/2009, -1/+3I have several Muslim friends and I have no qualms about layin' it down flat: you guys and gals need to try that stuff out, and ignore your imams. Seriously, you're missing out.
- dalittle, on 06/02/2009, -2/+4funny +1
- DrVic, on 06/02/2009, -0/+2mmmmmmmm carrion
- orlandogeek, on 06/02/2009, -2/+4I completely agree that our government has been far far too forgiving of Israel's government.
- atomheartmother, on 06/02/2009, -1/+3Hetman, you have a point in that our dependence on foreign oil has led to a somewhat disjointed policy in the middle east, but the answer, as attilla pointed out is NOT higher fuel taxes. Let's use every available resource we have here (which are vast) and continue to both exploit additional reserves (like shale) and research new technologies.
I have a feeling it won't be too many more years before crude is slowly replaced by clean renewables, and it will be a fine day indeed when a sheik's wealth is once again measured in heads of camels. -
