- siszam, on 10/10/2007, -11/+66But Americans still don't have fully tax funded, universal healthcare like every other Western Nation. Oh no, we just tear down and rebuild random countries. Where are all the Republicans screaming, "Not with my tax dollars you don't!" like they do when you try to really help someone?
- reeder, on 10/10/2007, -5/+58This perfectly sums up the Bush Administration's entire concept of reality: Wealth, power, and security to the privileged, chaos, submission, and fear for the rest.
Mr. Bush, go ***** yourself. Read that you NSA/FBI/Homeland pricks. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+52"At a time when millions of Baghdadis outside the green zone receive only a couple of hours of water and electricity daily, Iraqis observe that this project has been completed on time, on budget, and is entirely self-sufficient with its own fresh water supply, electricity plant, sewage treatment facility, maintenance shops and warehouses."
I'm glad the Americans have got their priorities straight... good on em. - Albionshores, on 10/10/2007, -1/+40I'll be surprised if they get 12 months use out of it.
- Bricks, on 10/10/2007, -3/+41What a towering monument to our administration's greed and foreign policy.
- growlzor, on 10/10/2007, -3/+35Wow the Iraqis must be pissed. Imagine driving down the highway and seeing a huge fort/embassy that belonged to some other nation.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -9/+38yet people in new orleans still have crap living standards.
- loganhid, on 10/10/2007, -1/+28so thats where my tax $ is going
- mattc908, on 10/10/2007, -8/+27I hate to be the devil's advocate in this but.
A. Its called house insurance,
B. YOU LIVE BELOW SEALEVEL next to the ocean
C. They spent the levy repair money on casino's and other porjects......? (and no it wasnt big W's decision it was: lets rebuild it a choclate city's idea)
D. Hey look sorry to say it but its not the governments burden to raise living conditions. - pradaaddict, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20Contemporary Imperialism at it's finest.
- dima7b, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20wow, thats ***** up.
- hongy_r, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16i would throw up if i knew my taxes were being spent like this.
- Napoleone, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15The size and money spent on this thing is obscene. We wreck their country and just for good measure, we then build the most extravagant structure in the whole of Baghdad to shove our occupation in their faces.
Great strategy Bush Co. And a big ***** thank you to each and every congressman and woman who voted for this war. - hongy_r, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14I think the government is set up to help the poor people out, even if it is only a token gesture at times. But this is more than just an embassy though. This is laughing in face of Iraqis. I don't think your founding fathers would have done anything like this.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15While as a whole, I agree with your comment, I don't agree with 'rebuilding' part, recently you've been busy just tearing down, at least that's what happened in Iraq and Afghanistan.
- jcarrion1976, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14In a few years time the American citizens will be treated exactly the same way.
- muffins, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14Careful folks, internet bad ass
- rnwen2750, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Ignorance does not become you.
- noahhoward, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13We're usually in our embassies for years to come... that's the freaking point.
- EricCiccone, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14My ex's father is a higher-up who works on embassies and worked on this one. He said the only reason why they built this super-sized embassy was because we are going to be in Iraq for many many years to come.
- rationalist, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Ah, I see your logic.
The Holocaust doesn't matter, because Stalin killed people, too.
The massacre at My Lai doesn't matter, because Japanese killed POW's in WWII.
Clinton's blow job, however, does matter - even though Mark Foley is a scumbag.
What a stupid way to go through life, with no moral compass, just a knee-jerk defense of Amerikkka, right or wrong. - fuckingusername, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10all about money and oil, I just can't believe where still their and Bush is still in power
- BossKey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9The Iraqi people would have been more likely to try the revolution thing, except that they tried that when George H. W. Bush told them to, back in the first Gulf War. Unfortunately, the first Bush lied about American support for their insurgency, so the revolutionary Iraqis got royally screwed in the form of instant death. So, you can't blame them for being wary of trying it again, especially since the son of the guy who screwed them is currently in power here.
- euphemizeme, on 10/10/2007, -5/+13***** people who choose to live in hurricane zones. The hold their hands out when they lose their property and the rest of the country foots the bill. I hate those ***** who say, "We're going to rebuild," with tears in their eyes as they describe how their 3rd house just got knocked down. How ***** brave... taking charity for stupidity.
- rnwen2750, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Just a minor detail - many people who had insurance on their houses have been waiting for their checks from the insurance companies and are waiting still. Insurance companies have forbidden the homeowners to tear their houses down and rebuild until the company comes out and inspects the damage. However, they have not sent nearly enough agents to assess the damage. I know many people who are still paying premiums on policies they have never received compensation from.
- chiggah, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Halliburton land?
Can I preorder tickets for it on Expedia yet? - fuckingusername, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8in some government officials pocket
- supermanred, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Me too.
- pintomp3, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9A: many people had hurricane insurance, but the insurance companies denied payment claiming it was flood damage. they also paid inspectors to deny claims.
B: it's not the only place in the world below sea level.
in the interest of oil and other resources, we have destroyed the marshlands that normally would have absorbed the storm surge. the government should look after it's own people and land, not just business interests. - Konformitee, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I hope it has sufficiently sized helipads on the roof so the Americans and sympathizers can scramble out of the country as the nation falls into civil war.
- hongy_r, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6fortunately, that's not my taxes at work.
- KMAR66, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10I thought we were going to impeach this a$$hole?
- supermanred, on 10/31/2007, -0/+6***** yeah! USA!
Is there anything good that the US is doing in the world nowadays? Does all the GO USA! USA! come from historical achievements now, and how long until those fade away? While you are saluting American flags made in China, blowing up countries for no apparent reason do you ever stop and think maybe the US is off track or has your facist government got you so ***** in the head you believe their crap? - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7You put people on your block list just for disagreeing with you?
- jdenzer, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9And the people of Iraq(under Saddam) CHOSE TO LIVE LIKE THAT
And the US came in and made them choose to live in poverty, death, and ruins.
I guess the war in Iraq is just a natural disaster like Katrina - MacEnvy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6That's why it's very important to be judicious with your block list. Save it for the biggest *****/trolls/creationists, and unblock those who you only disagree with on occasion.
- kufu91, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6while simple handouts are silly, a welfare system that assists in getting people employed (ie. a better system than we have now) pays for itself in new taxes and less crime.
its hard to get a job when you have no home to go to after - supermanred, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6It certainly isnt going to health care, or policing, or feeding the starving in the US, or building homes for the homeless in the US, or raising minimum wage, or properly building and constructing bridges, or helping US citizens who have been devestated by a hurricane, or .............
Oh, and that embassy will most likely in a few years be used by Iraq's new leaders once the Americans are gone, and their puppet government has been hung in the streets of Baghdad. - Gandhilion, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7this just makes me hate American hypocrisy even more.
- Bamborzled, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5It's got a school. And a shopping mall. And a BEAUTY SALON. A FREAKING BEAUTY SALON. Do you really need all those luxuries? Especially the mall and the beauty salon.
- MacEnvy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5So ***** what? That has nothing to do with his comment.
- MacEnvy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5No, it worked there due mostly to international cooperation and the full commitment of the world to make it work.
That situation never existed in Iraq, and the ***** In Chief decided to go in anyway. - pradaaddict, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5It's also not bad as far as public education goes.
- quaxon, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7this embassy is going to suffer the same fate as the one in iran. iraqi's need to mobalize and drive the occupiers out. the american forces need to actually live up to their "fighting for our freedom" decree and overthrow our present government that is taking away our freedom.
- civdis24, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Embassies are one thing. When it comes down to it, although this place seems like a massive waste of money, it seems logical. Now permanent military bases in Iraq is far more disturbing than an embassy.
- specialK16, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Haha, yeah, a place closed to the Iraq people, that it's more like a hotel for US government VIPs, with tennis and basketball courts, cinema, et all, while the rest of the country is crumbling down in misery thanks to the terrible job this administration has done... that really shows the commitment the US government has for Iraq.
- supermanred, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Wasnt Saddam Husein's last huge palace created by Saddam, who America helped put in power? How is the new one any different?
Before Saddam they had a government closer to democracy than now... oh and electricity, water and food which Im told are important for life and being happy.
US will be out of Iraq within 5 years, and they will have gained a new enemy who will get them back somehow. - SaintStryfe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4It's going to be very nice. I hope they included a very nice hellipad for the inevitable revolution.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6By the way, this embassy is being built by Filipinos who have been kidnapped and forced into slavery. Amerika, ***** ya!
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/iraq/article2199263.ece - pintomp3, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4not only that, but most of the money is going into the pockets of contractors like haliburton. they are flying in people from bangladesh and philippines who thought they were going to work in dubai. american contracts force them to work with little or no pay under very unsafe conditions.
