- NoOneButMe, on 10/11/2007, -6/+100You ever try driving in Manhattan? The idea's not as ridiculous as you seem to think it is.
- AhmedF, on 10/11/2007, -19/+100If the money goes to building actual reliable public transportation, I have no problem.
- newyawker, on 10/11/2007, -7/+86Ha! I live on 86 street. Score!
- popothebright, on 10/11/2007, -6/+85God I hate this board full of clueless people who don't understand the issue.
I live in Manhattan. So excuse me if I sound like I'm pissed, but when I hear people slam Bloomberg for trying to "pull something" it really pisses me off. Because the reality is, he is trying to SAVE something.
1) This is a crowded city that was never, ever meant to handle the number of cars which now try to squeeze into it on a daily basis.
2) Fat, stupid suburbanites who buy Hummers think they have a god given right to drive their enormous 2 ton beast into the city and find a place to park. Most of them expect to find a place to park on the street.
3) The amount of gasoline wasted by cars with four seats and one passenger is horrific.
4) To all of you who think this is somehow a curtailment of "rights", let me be perfectly clear: You don't have ANY RIGHT AT ALL to bring a 100square foot, carbon monoxide spewing beast with you into one of Americas most crowded places. Park it in Jersey, Westchester or the Bronx, and USE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION.
This is about saving energy and precious space. This is about pedestrian safety. This is about enviornmentalism. This is about reducing a very serious overcrowding problem.
Anyone who thinks this law is somehow "sticking it to the little guy" is an ass. The little guy is a fat retard from Jersey who wants to bring their pollution-spewing behemoth into the city and is sort of hoping to find a parking spot right in front of Bloomingdales. ***** them. And hooray for Bloomberg for saying "no". - Robozilla, on 10/11/2007, -8/+74I'm all for it. Traffic there is the worst.
The sad part is, they could make it 100 dollars, and there'd still be a hell of a lot of cars... really nice cars. - Cyxelsid, on 10/11/2007, -6/+65Nobody that has ever spent a significant amount of time in traffic in Midtown would think that anything that discourages unnecessarily driving into the city given all the public transportation options is a bad idea.
- Yez70, on 10/11/2007, -3/+54Don't they already do this in London too?
- ShorXrorE, on 10/11/2007, -1/+26yo, NYC needs to make cars illegal, take all those billions of dollars, and turn it into the worlds greatest public transportation system. every ***** car in NYC goes like 20mph and has one passenger. it's the dumbest goddamn thing in the world.
i know the comparison is idiotic but - ever see demolition man? we need those ***** robot rail taxis. - PrettyLadyGrace, on 10/11/2007, -6/+31we allready do, its incorporated into our regular taxes to keep it clean (and doesnt work because it is still dirty)
- satx, on 10/11/2007, -14/+39 If driving in the city is so important to you then pay the toll and enjoy the lessened traffic. If it's not, take the subway and STFU, you lazyasses.
- youdlike2know, on 10/11/2007, -1/+25we already have it in London, UK.. it's called a "congestion charge".. it's £8 ($16), started in 2006, and it's worked pretty well.. other cities using it include Malta, Stockholm, Oslo, Trondheim, Bergen and Singapore.. so yes, you'll be seeing it in a US city near you.. get used to it
- pintomp3, on 10/11/2007, -1/+24i agree with you, but that was one hard to read sentence. it never ceases to amaze me when you see one person trying to drive a car through times square. then they get upset because of the congestion. the city has one of the most expansive public transportation systems and countless cabs and towncars. there is very little reason to actually drive through lower manhattan. for the rare occasion that you do during peak time, $8 isn't so bad.
- digithed, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19Also in Stockholm now too. They trialled it for six months then stopped it for six months then put it to a vote and the Stockholm residents decided it was a good idea.
- Konrad9, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20This fare has done ***** amazing wonders for the traffic of London, I welcome this with open arms.
- pete32387, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17I live in the city and it is hard for me or anyone else who understands the plan to be against it. They are going to charge $8 total to go into the city. People such as my self who don't play games with their insurance and registration locations $4. This would help with two huge problems our air pollution and congestion. This is not going to cost $8 extra to get into the city it will cost $8 total i.e. it would be an extra $4 if you were to take the Midtown Tunnel. I can't stress how bad the air quality is, it is not the worst in the world but you will find that the dust in your apt is black.
This is a great plan, it is something that is absolutely needed this is not suburban Texas its New York, parking is going to cost $40 a day your coffee and muffin cost $10 lunch at least another $15 this $4 is in the margins people! It will clear the roads it will reduce the amount of car pollution and it will be a windfall for our mass transit system. The people who can afford it should get on a bus or train or find a new place to live. - Hornstinger, on 10/11/2007, -4/+20A similar thing in London has been instituted not to long ago and was and still is not very popular. The only difference is that we are paying £8 not $8.
- LifeIsARhythm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16I'm all for this if taxis are and buses going into port authority are exempt from paying.
And if people car pool and get 4 people per car then the price is equivalent at taking public transportation. - washingtonydc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15wow. you live 15 minutes from one of the most amazing cities in the world and you're too scared to go there? If only I had the voice of Morgan Freeman to give you some shawshank redemption advice.
- gr3yn3t, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17and Chicago actually has a decent public trans system..
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16When I was in Manhattan I didn't need to drive anywhere. Walking, biking and the subway worked just fine and in most cases was quicker than if I had driven.
- pervy_the_clown, on 10/11/2007, -6/+20If this makes it easier to drive around there, I'm all for it. It's pure hell driving around there.
- dragon76, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14To pay for the interstates, which is federal, which is where the gas tax comes from.
- Onyxblaze, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14he is actually right...
- shunter99, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13Apparently people aren't.
- pictureDIGGER, on 10/11/2007, -60/+72This is ridiculous. Chicago is trying to pull the same thing. What the ***** is the gas tax for again?
- phanfo, on 10/11/2007, -10/+22its a great idea and it should happen, I live in midtown and there is no reason to drive there in the first place, force lazy fools you can't get out of their cars and feel the need to drive everywhere because they want their own space, people free.
- Cyxelsid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12They've put Brockway, Ogdenville, and North Haverbrook on the map!
- nhassan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12hey yo Kurisuku, where did u go into? i live in NYC, and you don't get mugged everyday, pick pocketed every day, or whatever else you can come up with.
you must be really street stupid. - weeeezzll, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Seriously...anyone that drives in from Jersey should be singing the praises of this plan. It's ridiculous, even in the middle of the night you can expect 30 minute long lines at the Lincoln Tunnel...
- No13Baby, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Umm. Prepare to never have a parking space again.
- Extracheese, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12"New york is the rumoured front-runner to recieve some 500m in federal funding for mass transit improvements, but only if the state legislature approves the controversial congestion-pricing bill by July 16th"-The Economist. thats gotta be part of the reason for this, I wouldn't say its unfair because they obviously have plans to improve mass-transit though they're charging this fee.
- Cyxelsid, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13Those lower class people could already be saving a boatload of money by taking public transportation into the city.
Hell, it's New York, there's no reason to even take on the expense of owning a car. - Rubuntu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10$8 to finally drive around Manhatten with less traffic, Im heading in. In a week the congestion will be the same. Time is money and people will pay. I bet the price goes up fast. I mean Da..m, you paying $54 to park your SUV for 1 hour in Midtown so they know they will get away with more....
- brokencode, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Only problem: NYC subway system is a piece of ***** during rush hours. It's already packed to the max and they haven't done jack to do anything about it.
- Gerz1219, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12Oh come on, I grew up in Queens and took the train everywhere as a kid. Now I live in the East Village. I've been taking NYC public transportation for over 20 years and I've never been hassled/mugged/roughed-up. And anytime the slightest problem has cropped up around me, a plainclothes undercover office pops out of the woodwork. It couldn't possibly be safer. If it's happened to you twice, then you must really be a weenie. In high school, you must have regularly gotten wedgies and swirlies, then run home crying into your mother's lap. The problem is not NYC, it's you being a wimp who attracts such ill treatment. By all means, passively pay us the $8 to drive in. It's no different than when the jocks took your lunch money.
- vp249, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11I call *****. I live in the city and take the train all the time. I've taken the NJ Transit to Penn Station from Newark airport late at night, I take the LIRR to Long Island and get there at 11 or at night, and I've never been threatened or had any other reason to feel unsafe.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9this is really good - finally midtown might get normal again!
- halvertos, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10i don't know what Chicago Public Trans. system you're taking , but the delays, shut downs, construction, upkeep and lack of actual stops does not compare to new yorks, paris, london's or other developed cities. Chicago's CTA is pretty horrible.
- LifeIsARhythm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8It is a toll to get into midtown and downtown NYC, not to get into the state>
- oirvine, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10First of all, lower class people take the train. Second, if you drive on the New York roads, you should have to pay money towards the up keep of them.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -41/+49Soon we'll have a tax on the air you breathe.
- rdgn, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10how many times are you going to post your stupid isolated incident? i also live in nj and have taken public transportation to ny MANY times and have never been close to being mugged. give it up.
- Akram, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Welcome to England....already in London and spreading to Birmingham and Manchester in 2012.
- nyx210, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Man, you must have some bad luck...
- jsully, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11If I could I'd make the fee $50 per day. It is utterly unacceptable to not use public transportation to get into Manhattan.
- oirvine, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Do you have any idea how much it costs to park in downtown new york? People earning low wages would have to work all day just to pay for parking.
- ChayD, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I was absolutely amazed at the amount of traffic when I first visited NYC, it took over 40 minutes to go from Midtown to Queens by car and it's all people sounding their horns all the time. Crazy stuff. I stuck to the subway after several car journies. Upon returning to London's Oxford Street (which I guess would be one of the busier streets) It's was actually quite subdued in comparison.
- EvilMoose, on 10/11/2007, -6/+13This is why we need a monorail!
- Mothrog, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Because, dunce, only the rich drive in NY as it is. Everyone else takes the ***** train because they can't afford to pay $500+ a month for parking.
- lieutenantmudd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Are you trolling or what? Parking spots in Manhattan go for over $500 a month. No poor person would ever drive a car to work in Manhattan.
New York City is not like other American cities, you truly don't need a car to get around. The public transportation is dense and available enough to always get around. I live in DC, and I don't need a car 95% of the time, but that 5% is really inconvenient - it's almost worth me getting a car. -
