- hollywoodphony, on 04/09/2008, -39/+6Why are these people protesting the olympics? Did something happen?
- Tigerbot5, on 04/09/2008, -1/+20Honestly?...
- thunderliger, on 04/09/2008, -5/+10really? are you actually asking this? theres this little thing called the olympics, and they're in china this year, and oh, I don't know, china's only committed various human rights abuses, theres that whole tibet thing...really, try using the internet to inform yourself instead of dumbing yourself down.
- hollywoodphony, on 04/09/2008, -2/+4Wow, I had no idea. I was totally unaware and that's why I asked that question, not because I was making an ironic statement to troll for responses like this. A+ for you!
- MWeather, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2That's OK. Lots of people don't watch or read the news for month on end. They're called ignoramuses.
- steve06000, on 04/09/2008, -7/+1It's OK, Tibet isn't a country anyway.
- hollywoodphony, on 04/09/2008, -2/+4Wow, I had no idea. I was totally unaware and that's why I asked that question, not because I was making an ironic statement to troll for responses like this. A+ for you!
- stonebear, on 04/09/2008, -5/+19Yes, something did happen: The Olympic Committee awarded the 2008 Olympics to China; a brutal, totalitarian country, which, as it has proven by invading, annexing, and ethnically cleansing other countries such as Tibet, is against everything the Olympics is supposed to stand for.
- sinoplaya, on 04/10/2008, -1/+0invading? untrue. annex? untrue. ethnically cleanse? untrue. next!
- Calcularius, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1I'll wake you when we get back to earth.
- jflowers45, on 04/09/2008, -29/+2I don't think they're protesting the Olympics - I would assume they're just using that venue as a location for whatever their protest of choice is.
- thunderliger, on 04/09/2008, -1/+6you're an idiot as well. wake up people.
- frooo, on 04/09/2008, -26/+5Protest clothes for hot women! They should be banned from wearing clothing!
- mlagana, on 04/09/2008, -5/+2i can't believe this comment got dugg down, pure genius
- eightgr, on 04/09/2008, -13/+5blank page!
- jessjesscali, on 04/09/2008, -1/+0Refresh your browser. The chopper moves from place to place and in between there might be some blank times. Starting at 1 PM Pacific they will show the torch relay.
- teejaay, on 04/09/2008, -4/+14That could definetly get messy.
- bsdboy, on 04/09/2008, -0/+3Not yet, it will get messy when they run the torch through Tibet.
- Y0tsuya, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2Tibet is crawling with Chinese police. They'll keep order, no matter the cost.
- centran, on 04/09/2008, -0/+3well... I count at least 20 police on motorcycle. About 30 police on foot in riot gear and about another 20 on bicycles. Not to mention the various vehicles.
and that are just what is following the torch. They have more officers patrolling around and guarding certain lines.- GOVATENT, on 04/09/2008, -0/+3I just saw a cop hit a guy in the face. The news zoomed in to him. He was talking to a camera man who got it on camera.

- bsdboy, on 04/09/2008, -1/+7They took the runner off in a van, they're going to avoid the crowd altogether. There is also speak of part of the run will be by police boat.
- rmxz, on 04/09/2008, -1/+7Now that's the Olympic spirit!
Didn't the Marathon get named after the manufacturer of the van that carried the first guy ever to drive a marathon by van?- bsdboy, on 04/09/2008, -0/+5No more dividing by zero dammit
- centran, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2yeah? all I see now is a caravan of trucks, cars, and buses.
Is that what happened? Is there audio because I have no speakers at work? - bsdboy, on 04/09/2008, -1/+2They changed the route, they're on Van Ness and Bush
- Y0tsuya, on 04/09/2008, -1/+4Why bother with the relay if they're just going to hide it? Just scrap the whole thing. The torch relay began with the Nazis. We should let it die with the CCP.
- rmxz, on 04/09/2008, -1/+7Now that's the Olympic spirit!
- wukillabee, on 04/09/2008, -32/+6WHY WERENT THESE ATTENTION WHORES PROTESTING EARLIER???!??! THEY DONT GIVE A ***** ABOUT TIBET, THEY JUST WANT ATTENTION; THAT IS A FACT.
- jayobear, on 04/09/2008, -2/+13Stop yelling. It certainly doesn't make you look smarter.
- Chode2235, on 04/09/2008, -1/+4The point of a protest is to draw attention to something. That is why protest typically happen at high viability places, or during high viability events. Especially when you bring it to the attention of those who can do something about it. Namely the Chinese, the Olympic Committee, or domestic and foreign leaders.
- diggduggDOOM, on 04/09/2008, -1/+2Protesting earlier? Like the rallies they held last night? Like the Free Tibet events held in the bay area every year (at least that's the way it seems)?
- Y0tsuya, on 04/09/2008, -1/+4THE EARTH IS FLAT. THAT IS A FACT.
See, that didn't work either.- jayobear, on 04/10/2008, -0/+1Yeah. Suck it BillO
- milkmage, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1um.. maybe because the relay didn't start until TODAY.
- stevenbrown, on 04/09/2008, -11/+611 choppers? Wow I'd laugh if they collided over a torch.
- chrissku, on 04/09/2008, -22/+37***** China.
- Brian48216, on 04/09/2008, -7/+9well aren't you cool.
You took a noun, placed ***** in front of it, and tied it all up nicely with a period at the end to signify your indignance. Bravo.- bsdboy, on 04/09/2008, -1/+3It was in response to a post above that stated '***** tibet'. The above post has been changed so it's lost in translation.
- Sharpezor, on 04/09/2008, -2/+24>***** chinas government

- DavidTTT, on 04/09/2008, -11/+5I wish they would stop, all the protesters don't get the fact they are attacking the Olympics not china by doing the things they are.It sad to see,the Olympics is not about politics.

Thanks!
- theAlice, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2Cool, looks like DavidTTT Dugg me down in denial of history.
- greenm1981, on 04/09/2008, -1/+5The Olympics has everything to do with politics. It is supposed to be symbol of world unity, but awarding the games to a country that is responsible for egregious human rights violations sends a message to the world that it is perfectly acceptable for those practices to continue.
- Spire3660, on 04/09/2008, -2/+1The Olympics is neither the time or the place for this. Its SUPPOSED to be about the athletes, not political wrangling.
- Y0tsuya, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2Olympics has always been political, whether in 1936 or during the Cold War. Even the selection of host cities, particular Beijing, has paramount political significance for both the selector and selectee.

- IglooBurner, on 04/09/2008, -0/+3thats a pretty big convoy what the hell do they put in all those cars? just to take one torch around the city?
- skyz, on 04/09/2008, -1/+8your title is wrong - it is not rally FOR but a rally ABOUT - you make it sound as if all those who are protesting are in favor of this !
- JayBabs, on 04/09/2008, -0/+5cbs5.com will have live coverage as well at 1pm
- mlagana, on 04/09/2008, -9/+3olympics shmimpkicks, ide rather suck a dick
you all heard me - thunderliger, on 04/09/2008, -3/+16China apparently flew in and bused in hundreds of pro-china supporters to counter the anti-china protesters that were expected to come out today. The baton isn't even on the route right now, they took into a police base and they're shortening the entire route right now as protesters have blocked off the original route in front of AT&T park. ......ah, now they've moved the route to Van Ness, so, theres no protesters there, just holding up traffic for all the working people. great.
- jhandfield, on 04/09/2008, -1/+0[citation needed]
- h2d2, on 04/10/2008, -1/+2If you aren't aware, there are MORE people of Chinese descent in SF that those of Tibetan descent (plus the people of other races who sympathize with the Tibetans.)
- Wrangler76, on 04/10/2008, -1/+0You do realize, in London and Paris that there were just as many Pro-China supporters on the street if not more?
- sinoplaya, on 04/10/2008, -0/+1China doesn't need to "fly in and bus in" local business owners and Chinese-Americans - they came of their own accord because of patriotism and love of their roots (http://www.cbc.ca/world/story/2008/04/09/olympic-t ... this guy's from San Jose). This is the Chinese's chance to shine - just because my government might abuse human rights, (no country is perfect esp. when it has to deal with 1.2 billion people) doesn't mean I can't celebrate its progress from the past.
- kaplanfx, on 04/09/2008, -17/+4Doesn't anyone have a job anymore? I don't think these people have any idea what they are protesting.
- thunderliger, on 04/09/2008, -0/+7protesting is a full time job in SF.
- LewP, on 04/09/2008, -4/+4Excellent idea John. And by the way, 93 Diggs in 2 hours and 19 minutes. This story is surely headed for the front page. I am going to nominate you for clean-up hitter on our team. Great job!
- jboitnott, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1hahaha. You're too kind. But you won't like me much when the Chopper runs out of gas in 40 mins! :P

- chuanrys, on 04/09/2008, -11/+5Many of my friends self-organized to line up there to support the torch relay. The Olympics should not be used as a tool to achieve any political goals, that's a disgrace to the Olympics AND to the protesters.
All those red flags are pro-China and pro-Olympics supporters. There are many more of them than the Tibetans. Too bad media often mistake them for anti-China protesters.- dakbonsa, on 04/09/2008, -2/+5"Olympics should not be used as a tool to achieve any political goals." Come on, Germany used Olympics to show that they are superior. U.S. used Salt Lake as to counter 9/11. and China publicly said that it's going to use Olympics to show off themselves to the world. Olympics should not be used as a tool to achieve any political goals? Sorry, it has always been used for politics. China is using it, and so are others.
- swrostmore, on 04/09/2008, -0/+4Yes, that's the Party spin...but they never explain how human rights is a "political goal." Its nothing more than a Human goal.
- Mpwns, on 04/09/2008, -1/+4i live in the and can watch this on tv ill post again if something major happens right now the toarch runners are stoped.... wait looks like its about to be in full swing again but not the way they want to go as of 2pm on the west coast.

- tellahoohooo, on 04/09/2008, -4/+16boooo the protestors are over a mile away from the route...looks like no torch grabbing action today.
- acc355, on 04/09/2008, -6/+5Ugh, can't the news anchors just STFU.
- AndrewDB, on 04/09/2008, -1/+3Just look at all the people watching this HISTORIC run.. blah blah blah.. HISTORIC run..
We get the point lady, it's a historic run, jesus.- Condemned, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2Is it a historic run?

- diggduggDOOM, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1"I love being an IRL troll ... just to watch"
Watching is weak trolling, Sharpezor. Powerful weak.
- diggduggDOOM, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1"I love being an IRL troll ... just to watch"
- SuicideMouse, on 04/09/2008, -1/+5lol did anyone else see that couple crossing the street nearly get smacked by the cop on a motorcycle?
- xutopia, on 04/09/2008, -0/+15This will be a good to see if Americans can outdo the French or not.
- PabloMac, on 04/09/2008, -8/+4Why would I want to watch what disgusts me? Do these people really think they can force a change in a 4000-year-old feud halfway around the world? Oh, wait...
- thunderliger, on 04/09/2008, -1/+8SF pulled a fast one on all the protesters today, now the baton march is on Van Ness and Bush, going north, with nothing going on there but regular Weds. business. It's too far for any of the protesters around the bay to get there on foot, and all its gonna cost is extended stop and go traffic for the rest of the day. Hooray for the ingenuity of Gavin Newsom and China, finding ways to subvert the public will yet again!
- mandarin, on 04/09/2008, -2/+1It still ends up in one place right?
- thunderliger, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2they haven't said. Its supposed to end up at Justin Hermann Plaza, but apparently it can end up anywhere. They're talking on the news like it might just end when they reach the water at the top of Van Ness.
- diggduggDOOM, on 04/09/2008, -1/+0In other words, arbitrary event moved to new arbitrary location. Seriously, why even have this farce of running the torch in various locations? What's the point of extinguishing the torch when the event holders do that themselves to protect it? It becomes especially stupid when they "finish the run in a van" or some other silliness. Seems like a tour of the Olympic Flame (the flame they really guard and don't extinguish) would be more logical.
- mandarin, on 04/09/2008, -2/+1It still ends up in one place right?
- swrostmore, on 04/09/2008, -3/+14I'm guessing they changed the route to avoid protesters, so Chinese State media can broadcast "clean" video and say there was no protest.
- swrostmore, on 04/09/2008, -0/+6"The scenes along the route appeared festive on Wednesday morning, with no sign of protests. "Everything is tranquil and peaceful," said a police officer standing on guard."
http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2008-04/10/conte ...- WNW3, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2Wow, the quotes on that page are hilarious. Americans do not talk like that.
- swrostmore, on 04/09/2008, -0/+3I lolled, ", "This is a great day. Look at the cheering crowds. Even the weather extends its support. Just feel the gentle breeze and the warmth of the sun rays."
- WNW3, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2Wow, the quotes on that page are hilarious. Americans do not talk like that.
- Wrangler76, on 04/10/2008, -1/+0Maybe because Tibetans were throwing ***** at and attacking the last torchbearers in Paris including a disabled girl in a wheelchair and a blind boy? Safety over a bunch of lunatics first.
- swrostmore, on 04/09/2008, -0/+6"The scenes along the route appeared festive on Wednesday morning, with no sign of protests. "Everything is tranquil and peaceful," said a police officer standing on guard."
- Sharpezor, on 04/09/2008, -5/+10if i was one of those cops I'd just take the torch and burn a Chinese flag (it was in my pocket) with it. Id be remembered as an hero :)
- diggduggDOOM, on 04/09/2008, -1/+4You'd also be fired.
- Qeveren, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1Naw, he'd just taser some random bystander when he was done burning the flag, so he'd end up on paid leave.
- diggduggDOOM, on 04/09/2008, -1/+4You'd also be fired.
- digggggggggg, on 04/09/2008, -4/+10This whole torch relay is turning into a huge mess. Both sides, the protesters, and the Chinese committee putting this together, have made mistakes.
The committee should stop deluding themselves into thinking that the torch will be warmly welcomed wherever they choose. A lot of people simply can't overlook the horrible human rights record of the PRC's government.
The protesters should just chill. They're hurting their message by their poor behavior. I mean, making a grab for it, trying to extinguish it, and harassing the runners who are there with no ill intent? That's just shameful. They should stop acting like 10 year olds.- theAlice, on 04/09/2008, -0/+8You said it yourself: "horrible human rights record".
The protesters have good reason to be pissed off.- Brian48216, on 04/09/2008, -2/+1In that case, I'm waiting for the protests over Guantanamo Bay, and continued financial support for Saudi Arabia.
- Wrangler76, on 04/10/2008, -1/+0Yeah, that's why they should be attacking the innocent torchbearers which included a disabled girl in Paris. Good call!
- theAlice, on 04/09/2008, -0/+8You said it yourself: "horrible human rights record".
- trevorjez, on 04/09/2008, -5/+16with the police escort, doesn't this seem more like USSR propaganda than America? and another thing, why should SF tax dollars be spent to pay for this? seems like a giant waste of money.
- thunderliger, on 04/09/2008, -0/+5it is a giant waste of money. thats my SF taxes going to helping China look good. and it looks great by the way, 4 old people jogging up Van Ness with a baton surrounded by tons of police. someone should rob a bank, I swear, every cop is giving China oral sex right now.
- FatalClaws, on 04/09/2008, -8/+16There must be 20-30 cops (on bicycles and running alongside) the stupid torch. Where is your Freedom now America?! FAIL!
- swrostmore, on 04/09/2008, -2/+7Also a contingent of Chinese special forces
- icepick602, on 04/09/2008, -1/+4protecting torch bearers has nothing to do with my freedom. Being an American doesn't entitle me to physically harass torch bearers. People can still protest, they just can't touch the runner...as it should be...idiot
- ctpmn, on 04/09/2008, -3/+14Please SOMEONE do something stupid so we can digg the YouTube of the video too!
- theAlice, on 04/09/2008, -4/+10They just said that members of the People's Armed Police are guarding the Olympic torch.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/People%27s_Armed_Poli ...
I hope that one of them whips out a gun and kills a protestor. Then people will really get pissed off.- icepick602, on 04/09/2008, -2/+1what a stupid thing to hope for
- WNW3, on 04/09/2008, -1/+1So you want WW3?
- Mpwns, on 04/09/2008, -0/+7theres like an army of cops around the runners now on foot bikes and motorcycle's and they are moving now. protesters are moving with them as well. its gonna be a crazy summer in china this year the cops on foot are not even ours they are cops from china. they are going down vanness ave.they are talking to the mayor now and how they might cut the run short nothing much else they are starting to just say the same things over and over now.
- ottodog, on 04/09/2008, -2/+14If you notice NBC and its affiliates are light on the protests and always makes a point how many supporters there are?
They are sponsoring the Olympics and GE the parent company are selling US technology to China.
BOYCOTT AND PROTEST BOTH NBC AND GE,- theAlice, on 04/09/2008, -1/+4General Electric funded the Nazi Regime. It's no surprise that they would help the New China "Republic".
- Wrangler76, on 04/10/2008, -1/+1Well, I think it's good that they're pointing out how many supporters there are considering no other news outlet in America is doing it. I thought the point of free media was to show more than one side of the story?
- mtmozart, on 04/10/2008, -1/+1David Li (Wrangler76)
A 31 year-old male from Canada (CA) who joined Digg on March 18th, 2008- Wrangler76, on 04/10/2008, -0/+1What is your point? I was born and educated here. I disapprove of China's human rights abuses, but at the same time, I hate when the media distorts the truth IN OUR OWN FREE SOCIETY. I made a valid point- what's wrong with showing both sides of the story? Should NBC be like other outlets that constantly show Tibet protestors and one side of the Tibet riots? What is the point of our free media if we have come to the point where we will just accept anything from CNN/FOX unless it's about Obama or Iraq? Heck, I used to have faith in our media, because I believed, because of seeing some of the comments on Digg and other forums that people were always skeptical of what they see on the news. However, when it comes to crap about China, everyone turns into a mindless sheep that believes whatever the article says regardless of the source.
And yeah, Digg hasn taken a turn for the worse. I remember articles in just 2006 when there was less of these idiotic calls for boycotts of random companies from armchair activists.
- Wrangler76, on 04/10/2008, -0/+1What is your point?

- RedSaber, on 04/09/2008, -10/+6It's insane how much uneducated people there is out there... Well, I'm not so surprised, nearly a majority if Americans don't even know where Canada is.
***** China's government and ***** the Olympic Committee.
Free Tibet,
Free Quebec,
Free Ireland,
Free Catalan,
Freedom is a state of being, not just a word you use to look cool.- RedSaber, on 04/09/2008, -4/+4btw I meant no offense to the American people regarding the fact that they don't know where Canada is. It's just a fact according to various polls down there. I wuv you guys. :P
- diggduggDOOM, on 04/09/2008, -1/+1I'm one of those stupid Americans, I guess. Is Quebec suffering some horrible oppression at the hands of the Canadian government?
- Jackson0909, on 04/09/2008, -1/+1No. French-Canadians see themselves as different from the rest of Canada. They would be extremely happy if they could break away and form their own country. The quality of life is just fine. The problem is culture more than anything else.
- WNW3, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1And free Hawaii.

So is poverty. - a2love, on 04/09/2008, -2/+3hahaha. Free Quebec? Quebec is a part of Canada and it will continue that way. If you want to leave fine, we will take back all of the indian land to the north and all Canadian government buildings and infrastructure which continues to support you. You have more benefits than any other province yet you continue to complain. Sepratists are deluded and have a poor grasp of reality.
- jn35, on 04/10/2008, -0/+0The same case is China& Tibet! Those who keep saying Chinese government's oppressing Tibetans, show your ample evidence, PLEASE!
- Malarie, on 04/09/2008, -0/+4Free Quebec? We have more freedom than our american friends. Our bars close at 3 am, we are allowed to touch in the strippers clubs (no i am not goin there, i have a beatiful girlfriend who completes me). Okay we speak french, so what? make Quebec a country and we will be the next Mexico, plus plenty of ressources without an army to defend them. GG
- RedSaber, on 04/09/2008, -3/+1:D Wow there's so much intelligent arguments there.
You should definitely try to get into politics, you're IQ level is almost as high as Bush!

- Findeton, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1¿Free Catalonia? I'm from Spain and most of the people from Catalonia don't want Catalonia to become a new country. I say: let's make a referendum and let's see if they really want it, i have no problem with that. But don't talk so lightly on subjects you haven't studied thoughtfully.
- RedSaber, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1I have studied the matter thoughtfully, exactly. I have organized a partnership with university groups in Catalonia regarding freedom and independance.
The very fact that you're from Spain is like asking a Chinese what he thinks about Tibet freedom, or a Canadian about Quebec's freedom, it has simply no intellectual value.- Malarie, on 04/10/2008, -0/+1Quebeccers do not want a referendum, we said no twice, (although i voted yes when i was 18). The Parti Quebecois is just a mess, or merely a shadow of what it was before. They cant even keep a chief more than 2 years.. How will they achieve the separation if chaos reigns in their ranks? In the last 13 years, they had more chiefs than any other party. Parizeau, (quit), Bouchard (quit), Landry (quit), Boisclair (quit) and now with Pauline Marois? I giuve her 1 more year, and I give the party 3 to 5 years.
- a2love, on 04/11/2008, -0/+0Malarie, I fully agree. I think this argument should be declared dead after reading that RedSaber thinks asking a Canadian about Quebec's freedom has no 'intellectual' value. It is obvious RedSaber has no grasp that Canadians understand Quebec's point of view but many disagree. He obviously feels his view is the only correct one, which is very common in ignorant individuals. Good luck in the next silent revolution RedSaber, I hope you pop out 12 kids to continue your point of view.

Wouldn't the more 'educated' way to write that be:
It's insane how MANY uneducated people there ARE out there.- RedSaber, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1You're right, I'm sorry. I sometimes make mistakes with my 4th language.
- shtonkalot, on 04/10/2008, -0/+1No need to apologise. Just when making a point about how others are "uneducated" it may get across better if you write it concisely as it would have been taught to you when you were "educated".
If that's the biggest mistake you make on a fourth language then you are quite well educated, in languages at least. - Malarie, on 04/10/2008, -0/+24th language... Now I would understand if Spanish or Deutsh was your fourth language.. But English...
