- javarox, on 11/06/2009, -6/+50Who cares?
- rblancarte, on 11/06/2009, -2/+21Maybe it was. And while the school should look to solve this question, it should do nothing to reflect poorly on the school in the present, should the fact be true.
- Nairebis, on 11/06/2009, -3/+21This brings up a sore spot with me. I have a theory that the Roman Colosseum was built with slave labor. When are we going to acknowledge the debt of those people who were exploited 2,000 years ago? When are we going to give them reparations?
WHEN IS THIS STAIN ON HISTORY GOING TO BE ABSOLVED? - inactive, on 11/06/2009, -2/+19Is almost complete speculation really first-page material?
- ryrocker, on 11/06/2009, -1/+16were slaves used in the construction? probably.
- lolwatermelon, on 11/06/2009, -1/+12"We couldn't find any evidence, but that doesn't keep us from claiming it's a fact."
Now nobody has to read the article. You're welcome. - SQLDigger, on 11/07/2009, -2/+11Holy *****. Do not EVEN get me ***** started on the ***** pyramids.
- Yond, on 11/07/2009, -0/+9As a black man, I have to say that I could care less about whether the university of MD, was built from slave labor for other than purely mundane, factual, non-shockingly historical reasons. I only care about what it is now and what kind of cool majors I can get at the U of Md which is a great school. I graduated in the university of Md and I hope to go back and get more degrees. Yes my ancestors were slaves in this country, so what. I can't be angry at dead people, no matter how hard I try I just don't have any feelings about them. I like history and observe it from a holistic standpoint. I am glad that my ancestors were forcibly brought here to the united states because otherwise where would I be today? Would I even exist? I don't think any sort of reparations is really necessary or due should anyone actually suggest it. Inequality exists for many groups in the U.S. and I care about that, but skeletons in coffins just don't make me angry if you know what I mean.
- inactive, on 11/06/2009, -1/+10Dude the whole nation was built using slavery.
Get the ***** over it. Those responsible are long dead. - jax1492, on 11/06/2009, -0/+8The whole USA was built by slaves why is this news?
- inyearstocome, on 11/06/2009, -6/+14This is pertinent in 2009 because....?
- PeppermintPig, on 11/06/2009, -2/+9Welcome to digg.

- okcomputer1982, on 11/06/2009, -1/+7The history of america is not pertinent in 2009? There goes that whole "never forget" thing huh. Funny how that doesn't apply to american slavery.
- bobburn1, on 11/06/2009, -3/+9So they wasted valuable time and money researching something everyone can just presume? Nice.
- jerryjamesstone, on 11/06/2009, -3/+7Hey, it makes my Gap jeans comfy..how bad can it be?
- Laminarcissus, on 11/06/2009, -1/+5The White House was built with slave labor, as was the Capitol Building, so it's important to know from an historical perspective, to document slaves' contribution to the building of the nation.
But anyone who wants to use it to make any points about the current-day institution would have to base it in their modern day handling of the information, not something that took place solely in the past. - Laminarcissus, on 11/07/2009, -5/+9To relate your indignant little financial struggle to people who had their children taken away from them and sold on the open market is one of the most inhumanly disgusting and selfish things I've ever seen posted on Digg, and that's saying quite a lot.
- Laminarcissus, on 11/07/2009, -3/+7Holy crap no.
You can choose. You can leave and go somewhere there are no taxes. You can vote to change those taxes, you can elect representative to fight for you, and then, even if none of that comes about, you only end up with less money than you started. You can say what you want, you can do what you want, wake up when you want, do what you want for a living, go to sleep when you want, eat what you want, and do whatever you want with the rest of your money for the rest of your life.
There were two million people in the South that were born slaves and who knew they would would die slaves. They knew their children and grandchildren would die slaves, and what's worse, they were right.
It was standard procedure to take babies away from their mothers shortly after childhood so that they would not form a bond. They would sleep on dirt floors with no blankets, and receive one set of clothes a year. And that was for their *entire life,* and they knew that their children would have the same life after them.
There is *no* comparison, in principal or otherwise.
Please, just read, for example, the autobiography of Fredrick Douglass and you'll see that the every day reality of slavery has no comparison to anything we face now as Americans, and especially not your resentment over your tax bill. - nepidae, on 11/07/2009, -0/+4The "never forget" stuff pisses me off. Not because I think we should forget, but because it is a play on emotion rather than thought.
- Laminarcissus, on 11/07/2009, -1/+4Prison labor is labor performed by people who have committed a crime, and are working as part of their punishment. they can avoid it by not committing a crime, and when their sentence is up they can leave.
Slave labor is labor performed by people who have committed no crime, and are being forced to work at the point of a gun. Slaves cannot avoid it if captured, and they can never leave, nor can their children, or grandchildren.
Any other questions? - Laminarcissus, on 11/06/2009, -1/+4Why would you be so opposed to documenting slaves' contribution to the building of this country?
- SpiderTeets, on 11/07/2009, -1/+4who cares, that was then, this is now.
if you dont dwell on crap in the past you wont let it ruin your future. - mruocky, on 11/07/2009, -0/+2I went there!!!
- Laminarcissus, on 11/07/2009, -2/+4Wow. Equating dying in the Civil War and being beaten up by cops with life as a slave. So much ignorance as to the reality of a slave's life over six generation of slavery.
Please, before you get all preachy won't you at least just read the autobiographies of Frederick Douglass and Booker T. Washington?
If you can say the things you just did then you really have no understanding of what the day-to-day reality of slavery really was.

- inyearstocome, on 11/07/2009, -0/+2Agreed. "Never forget" is the kind of hate mongering mentality that keeps the masses fueled for war and ready to give up their liberties.
- kitkat102, on 11/07/2009, -0/+2LOL beat me to it. I had exactly those words in mind. There's far too much 'apologising for things that happened hundreds of years ago' crap going around these days.
- poprocksandsoda, on 11/06/2009, -5/+7As a resident of the North I would like reparations to be paid by African Americans for the lives lost in my family during the war to free the slaves. I would think a few million dollars would settle the issue all well and fine. In addition, as an athiest, I would like reparations paid by Christians for the suffering experienced by my decendants who were viciously persecuted during the crusades.
- dhartin, on 11/07/2009, -1/+3angry black man on a tirade. White people, RUN
- Barackalypse, on 11/06/2009, -3/+5All Governments are built and maintained by slave labor, except the call those people taxpayers, but an income tax is no less indentured servitude than making someone work exclusively for you for a year. Truth be told, I'd rather be an indentured servant for 5 years than lose 25-28% of my income for the rest of my life.
- electricwaffles, on 11/07/2009, -0/+2It started more than a century ago as an agricultural school. So, yes, odds are they had slaves.
- Laminarcissus, on 11/07/2009, -2/+4Hard labor yes, but using prisoners as a free or low-cost workforce continues. What's your point?
- rexxdart, on 11/07/2009, -0/+2I just want to know about this six generation old slave. damn. how many years are you attributing to a generation?
- okcomputer1982, on 11/07/2009, -0/+2You don't know ***** of americans of any color.
- zoomaKabu, on 11/06/2009, -3/+5Solve what problem?
- SpiderTeets, on 11/07/2009, -1/+3thats besides the point, we're talking about slave labor and slave labor only.
plus most of the stuff you mentioned actually did happen to a lot of minorities, such is the past
its time to grow up and move on
look, the jews have done it so many times. - pintomp3, on 11/07/2009, -1/+3Wow, a lot of people here seem upset that history is being explored. Just because it's unpleasant doesn't mean it should be ignored. Will we start doing the same with the holocaust and 9/11? Just say it's in the past, get over it?
- SpiderTeets, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1because of the topic at hand.
if the topic is about slavery then the slave trade is not relevant to the conversation, you also seem like a rational person, i'm sure you see the article is trying to link the construction to the suffering of black Americans through slavery, regardless of the slave trade or any outlying factors - VBDon, on 11/20/2009, -0/+1You should read more carefully. I didn't say everyone owned slaves. I said construction of most everything constructed in the south before 1865 involved slave labor. It's a simple fact. Or, are you fishing to get a PhD by simply announcing the discovery that slaves picked cotton. News isn't news unless it's new.
- besheer, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1What difference does it make? The whole country was.
- Yond, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1Thanks!
- bugsy187, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1The people who "dugg" the story?
The people who took the time to comment? - nepidae, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1Even if you ignore the indentured servitude of white people, the abomination that was the treatment of natives (regardless of their own wars "we" still handled that terribly) and very-close-to-forced labor of the chinese building the railroads, very often women of any color would be sold into prostitution.
Anyway I never have and never will own a slave so stop blaming me. And in fact it doesn't even matter who is at fault, you can either wallow in self-pity or pick yourself up. Only you can do that, no one else can do it for you. - Turdem, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1Where's my picture of the pyramids?
"Slavery. Gets ***** done."
While I don't agree with the tenants of slavery, one cannot deny it's profound effect on the building of nations economically, physically, and via politics. - Yond, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1are you making assumptions about me? What exactly do you mean?
- okcomputer1982, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1The modern impact of slavery IS modern racism, sir. It's not a comparison to and it's certainly not a dismisal. My anseters WERE slaves and I will never know my past beyond that of a slave ship. This isn't abstract for me, this is my life, the life of my parents and there parents before them. How dare you lecture me because of a two word preface when you admit that my objections are sound. My intent is crystal clear and you can cover your eyes all you want, we both know that's not going to change. Both rhetorically and as a matter of taste, you are the ignorant one here.
Further, why all this towards me and not toward the lead post who very clearly dismissed both reparations and slavery in exactly the way you seem to be against? - SpiderTeets, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1i love how they seek for a reason to say it was slave labor, "if now built"
what a loser. - bubba9999, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1speaking of a persecution complex...
- Spartakip, on 11/07/2009, -1/+2dug for slave labour.
