- EdmontonEh, on 08/11/2008, -4/+157I am continuously impressed with Boston.com, the articles, and especially the pictures really bring a touch of reality to major events.
Can you imagine if this was happening in your country... to your family? - GREEDOnvrFIRED, on 08/12/2008, -7/+96So that's what war looks like. (When it is not cleaned up and spun for my viewing pleasure by the United States government)
- inactive, on 08/12/2008, -1/+76Wow, the countryside of Georgia is beautiful.
- fuzzmeister, on 08/12/2008, -2/+76http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2008/06/daily_lif ...
- klitzbtc, on 08/12/2008, -1/+71I'm gaining a lot of respect for boston.com. These pictures are incredible.
- borez, on 08/12/2008, -5/+62So sick of war.. So sick.
- mark076h, on 08/11/2008, -16/+66It's not just War in South Ossetia anymore, it is an all out invasion of Georgia from Russia, the pages of Red Storm Rising coming true.
- krnldmp, on 08/12/2008, -10/+58Where are all the high-res photos of Iraq?
- barcelona10, on 08/11/2008, -2/+45seeing these images is very sobering.
- T440, on 08/12/2008, -1/+42Thank God, Boston.com actually knows what a graphic image really is...every other news site that I've seen has been posting that bloody woman as their thumbnail to their articles and censoring peoples butt cracks..
- benkrembs, on 08/12/2008, -2/+37Or, more likely, nobody does anything to help Georgia and they get conquered by Russia.
- inactive, on 08/12/2008, -1/+36Sadly, there is nothing the USA can say or do to get Russia to stop. Anything that comes out of Bush Jr's mouth will be laughed at given his hard on for war in Iraq. We also have this blind support for whatever Israel does and we basically ignoring everything that goes on in Africa. So its really kinda funny (from a Russian POV) that USA would have the balls to tell Russia what to in regards to matters relating to invading sovereign nations and the loss of human life during a time of war.
Russia is part of the UN Security Council, they will veto any resolution condemning itself or any action taken for force a cease fire. All it takes is one veto to stop it. - inactive, on 08/12/2008, -0/+30What an odd life - to be a war photographer.
Good shots though. - ErickStevenson, on 08/12/2008, -1/+30You know if Georgia did start ***** first Russia was on the right when helping South Osettia, but now what I don't get is Russia is going past who they intended to protect and invading the whole country of Georgia... so anyone wanna tell me what's going on?
- Zidul, on 08/11/2008, -1/+28amazing photos.
- dizilbdog, on 08/12/2008, -3/+29I'm just wondering at what point in society is the idea of "War" ever going to be outdated. I mean what the ***** are we doing. You see how beautiful those mountains are in those pictures.
- inactive, on 08/12/2008, -5/+29Russia can basically take georgia if it wants to. The EU depends on Russia's oil, and the U.S. is busy with its "war on terror." So that leaves two options: U.S. draft and/or WW III.
- Muyoso, on 08/12/2008, -5/+25Russia has been planning to overtake Georgia for a while now. They have been building railroads to transport troops, they have been mobilizing their forces for at LEAST weeks. You cannot just throw together a response like their's. This has been planned.
- inactive, on 08/12/2008, -1/+21If I saw that helicopter I would ***** my pants.
- Gnar04, on 08/12/2008, -2/+19i still really dont know whats going on or why, but still, it sucks.
- inactive, on 08/12/2008, -3/+20Some believe we only evolve because of war.
- rogue780, on 08/12/2008, -0/+15our we now? well at least are boarder is ok. it'd suck if he got hurt.
- scoottie, on 08/12/2008, -1/+16oil pipeline
- RaspberryTang, on 08/12/2008, -1/+15Amazing photos of the fighting and the carnage it's left behind. Hopefully this violence will end soon.
- salamnder, on 08/11/2008, -19/+33Russia is pissed because Georgia wants to join NATO. Russia did everything it could before invading to retard their efforts. By causing dissent and chaos the Russians thought the Georgians would not be let into NATO. As soon as Georgia mobilized against the S. O. town, the Russians went in. the EU, NATO and sadly the US must do something to protect these former Soviet States.
- rilmatz, on 08/12/2008, -0/+14No, you're completely wrong. S.O. is, although self-proclaimed independent, recognized universally (even by Russia) as part of Georgia, so you're basically saying Georgia has invaded itself. While it remains unclear whether or not russia was justified in protecting it's 'citizens' in SO, their push further into Georgia is an unjust invasion into a sovereign nation, no longer, as they claim, a peace keeping operation. *Not* "end of story". things aren't as simply as you seem to think.
- ChuckDees, on 08/12/2008, -2/+16Just a pathetic reminder.
No matter how evolved humankind can become.
We still cannot seem to evolve past war. - Muyoso, on 08/12/2008, -0/+13There is an oil pipeline.
- Daxx22, on 08/12/2008, -2/+15Most likely never. It's pretty much coded into our genetics.
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -0/+12Georgia sent some of its military into a small region that broke away from Russia to basically declare governance of it, and Russia responded by sending in tons of its own military. They've gone way overboard with it though, since they've also sent tanks into Georgia and have been making bombing runs against them and killing tons of people...
I'm not even totally sure about how this all started, I've only been reading some small bits and pieces. - thcobbs, on 08/12/2008, -1/+12Actually from what I've been reading, most of the South Ossetians(forgive any misnomer here) have been granted Russian Citizenships and Russia, at least publicly, is saying that its defending its citizens.
Now, I'm not going to take sides, but this seems to be a very interesting(I shudder that I can use that academic a word during this) are these points:
- Georgia(proper) is attacking South Ossetia to regain control over a break-away province that has had de facto independence since 1992. Why now? What changed after 16 years to warrant a military invasion?
- Russia is attacking Georgian Troops in South Ossetia(apparently witth the good will of the South Ossetians). However, they are expanding the attack outside the bounds of the break-away provinces. What does that serve? If they are truly just helping the South Ossetians, why the need to attack Georgia proper unless Georgia is continuing to attack the province? Or, is Russia aiming at something larger than just the South Ossetians?
As Holmes(Sherlock) would say: "the game is afoot". Something about this conflict is not public knowledge. Something is going on, but we won't know soon(and possibly never will) what is the crux of this matter.
God help us if this is the opening volley of WWIII - inactive, on 08/12/2008, -1/+12Read the caption:
"Residents of Dzuarikau throw gifts of food, drink and cigarettes to Russian soldiers in armoured personnel carriers on their way to the South Ossetia conflict zone on August 9, 2008" - Grolsch, on 08/12/2008, -2/+12Everyone needs to just chill out already. Georgians did kill innocent civilians so Russians went in but now as we can see its much bigger issue and no media can clarify this because they dont know ***** themselves. Its geopolitics at its finest. There is obviously a hidden agenda from few parties including US,Georgia,Russia, and whole NATO thing. Its just very interesting how evens unfold. I pray we wont see WWIII because this whole conflict does scare me. I am just sick of war already, its funny how nobody wants the war but those damn politicians push their own agenda. I wonder if there is a place where we can just all leave in peace already.
*Puts Zombie by Cranberries on" - xNaquada, on 08/12/2008, -0/+10This needs to get more attention. Noone is paying attention, including media outlets. Everyone is being dumbed down into the olympics.
Its quite obvious that this war is not over. - djasshat, on 08/12/2008, -1/+11Then why is Russia Continuing into Georgia?
- Noodleson, on 08/12/2008, -1/+11Separatists started shooting up the semi-independent territory of South Ossetia, so Georgian and Russian forces moved in on the city to secure it. Russia secured the town and demanded Georgian forces pull out, Georgian forces pulled out and held a cease fire (according to the Georgian government). Despite this, Russia began a total invasion of Georgia today. Russia claims it is protecting its people, Georgia is claiming victim.
There's a lot of conflicting info out there, that's the best I can make of it though. - elarson, on 08/12/2008, -1/+10Finally, I find *exactly* what I'm looking for on Digg.
- fuzzmeister, on 08/12/2008, -1/+10Believe me, boston.com isn't going to go down.
- curtisag, on 08/12/2008, -3/+126+ billion people all trying to get a share of limited world resources like food, water, oil, energy, shelter? It will end when a virus wipes out the world population to a sustainable level or we do it to ourselves.
- Fun4Two, on 08/12/2008, -1/+10Man, way to go off topic their. I guess McCain shot your dog in a drug raid
- curtisag, on 08/12/2008, -3/+12One world... oil.
- riskybeats, on 08/12/2008, -3/+12As long as there is man, there is war.
Sorry. - unorginalityftw, on 08/12/2008, -1/+9Long story, lots of background, neither side is really in the right (two wrongs don't make a right, as it were) which is escalating the conflict and lots of people are dying, being wounded, or displaced as a result.
- analogkid01, on 08/12/2008, -5/+13A side-note: McCain's response to this attack was to warn Russia that it should bow to "the court of world opinion" (stealing Stevenson's phrase)...yet McCain oh-so-wholeheartedly supports Bush's Gulf War 2, in complete defiance of "world opinion"! What a douchebag.
- x0epyon0x, on 08/12/2008, -1/+9I've never trusted Russians and I never will. I can never forgive them...for the death of my boy.
- NightVortez, on 08/12/2008, -2/+10Reminds me of what my grandfather always said, "I'm going to go upstairs and ***** your grandma"
- doom777, on 08/12/2008, -0/+8that's called reactive armor, it works very well against anti-tank missiles
- Muyoso, on 08/12/2008, -3/+11Where would it leave Ukraine? Next.
Russia has been preparing for this for MONTHS. They have been in North Ossetia repairing a railroad line for "transport of food". Convenient that it is now transporting troops and weapons. Also, it is obvious to anyone who is familiar with the military, that you don't throw an operation like this together in under a week. Russia is trying to build back up the USSR. - phunlee, on 08/12/2008, -0/+7Wow I wished I could live in a black and white world. Right and Wrong, etc. & et al...
Too bad there's always people and ideas getting in the way. Things get muddy when it comes to reality, and living on this planet.
I hereby name your planet 'DoucheBagurn-7'. - jsauter, on 08/12/2008, -0/+7The mountains in those few pictures were stunning.
