- Rhydeble, on 02/22/2009, -2/+44Please understand that there are a lot of criminals who want to change their ways. If their pasts keep haunting these people, they will never have reason to change, for people won't judge them on how they are now.
- Amadeus2490, on 02/22/2009, -0/+26Believe me, I feel the same other people do about people who rape children, but I seriously feel that things like child molestation need to be furthered studied and understood, so that we can try to help some of these people instead of treating them with violence. If it isn't already, psychiatric evaluation should be court ordered for all sex offenders, to be paid out of their own pocket or covered by insurance.
- nyxerebos, on 02/22/2009, -1/+21That's just paranoid. Get over this Stranger Danger bullcrap and realize that most people are pretty decent. Even violent criminals aren't violent all of the time, for no reason.
Say some guy finds out his girlfriend's seeing someone else, flips out and kills the other man in a drunken rage. That's unacceptable, so we jail him for murder. He's a violent criminal. Doesn't mean he has any ill intent towards your kids. - dlan4327, on 02/22/2009, -0/+13"Recognising Mr Brown's need for privacy he shall henceforth be known as Mr Pedo McFeely"
- Azerael, on 02/22/2009, -1/+13What's it like living in the 17th century?
- Uriah, on 02/22/2009, -0/+11With regards to this article and similar article on punishing criminals, you need to make a choice.
Do you believe rehabilitation works?
If you do, then after rehabilitation you allow them to change their names, and become another regular member of society. If you don't allow them to become essentially anonymous, you don't allow them to be rehabilitated by putting expectations on them, and putting them into the position where people can ostracise them attack them.
If you don't, then you believe they should be jailed for the rest of their life. This means paying for them to live out the rest of their lives in jail.
The fine line becomes a case by case basis, is the crime enough to just be jailed for their whole life (and I don't mean 24 years, I mean the length of their life), or should they be rehabilitated. If rehabilitated, these guys need to be segregated from the general prison population who have no chance of getting out.
That's as far as it goes. - CVL4317, on 02/22/2009, -1/+11no matter how disgusting their pasts are, they're still humans. So is the society around which is mostly driven by emotion. Obviously this might not be the best solution, but i do believe that this is closer to "best solution" than posting their names online and waiting to be lynched.
- nadalbg, on 02/22/2009, -0/+10No surprise. I am also hiding behind the name "nadalbg"
- Paulish, on 02/22/2009, -1/+11I agree. As long as we treat criminals as if there is some inexorable demon lurking inside each and every one of them our society will remain in a moral dark age.
- CVL4317, on 02/22/2009, -1/+10you mean, sex offenders like self-nude-pics taking and distribution when underage will remain doing the same thing again?
stolen bad joke, when will lawyers finish practicing laws and doing it for real? - manzplan, on 02/22/2009, -6/+14supposeing you KNEW a neighbour of yours was a violent criminal because of his name being publicised..
does that mean all your other neighbours are safe just because you havent seen their name on the news? of course not.
As such the name change is okay with me because we shouldnt assume people are ever safe...especially with kids - grungegbunny, on 02/22/2009, -0/+8If they've already done their time I see no problem with it.
- Paulish, on 02/22/2009, -0/+7You conveniently left out the part that explains WHY people reoffend.
- Murdats, on 02/22/2009, -1/+8why? we like having a lower crime rate and less barbaric society then america.
why would we want to change our culture into the violent savage culture of america? - microview2007, on 02/22/2009, -3/+9………………………………………………………………………………………………

Committing a criminal act does not always make one a "criminal." We should stop condemning people to their acts and accept their right to rehabilitation.
- jayrok, on 02/22/2009, -0/+6... such as "DMX", "50 Cent" and "P. Diddy".
- microview2007, on 02/22/2009, -0/+5Being gay was illegal up till about 30 years ago. The same sex offender status and society disgust with violence existed up until the Stonewall riots of 1969. Being gay then was the same as being labeled pedophile today.
Check the facts.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stonewall_riots - antechinus, on 02/22/2009, -1/+6I think we should leave State sanctioned murder to backwards and primitive societies like the USA and others.
- inactive, on 02/22/2009, -1/+6...You do know what rehabilitation means, don't you?
- dsfjvhbd, on 02/22/2009, -1/+6For me there are two possibilities:
Either you keep a criminal in jail for life or you let him free after some time.
Letting him "free" while making sure, he cannot live a normal life cannot be an option. - inactive, on 02/22/2009, -0/+4Yeah, no
- microview2007, on 02/22/2009, -0/+4I've worked out of a prison that houses "sex offenders" and have learned a lot from the state therapists treating them. Let me start by making two statements. The majority of society is ignorant about the statistics and behavior surrounding sex offenses as most of what we hear is what media wants to sell us in soap ads. Secondly raping and molesting are two different beasts. Molesters can be treated by learning their behavior cues and relapse prevention much like alcoholics, gamblers, over eaters, etc. Rapist on the other hand are opportunist who will offend by the flip of a switch. Rapists can attack children as well as adults and molesters can grope adults as well as children. It's complex how these people think and to educate the world is only the tip of the ice berg. I've thought about how much more money I could of made as a therapist vs. a guard but never had the motivation to work with criminals other then with a shotgun.
- CVL4317, on 02/22/2009, -0/+4you mean, a law that supposedly protects the society ending up need to be revised to protect the ex-offender from the society?
- inactive, on 02/23/2009, -0/+3well, they did serve their time, bratchny.
- dsfjvhbd, on 02/22/2009, -0/+3Did you ever drive a car?
You know it is pretty dangerous, don't you?
Ever had your kids with you in the car?
... - mlagana, on 02/22/2009, -0/+3ok here's your new name just stop kissing boys!!
- randomstupid, on 02/22/2009, -0/+3I totally agree... but what is the solution ?
The current system is lock them up . The antithesis is rehab .
Venge the victim or cure the Perp... its a fine line . - mreade, on 02/22/2009, -5/+8That Victorian pyro had better not be allowed to change his name!
- randomstupid, on 02/22/2009, -0/+3I think yer right but...
They should have gotten rehabilitation before they committed a serious crime.
Look at those kids who screwed with that cat recently... evaluate, determine, heal. - renuncln, on 02/22/2009, -0/+2Actually, violent crime has been on a downward trend for quite a while. You may want to get some facts before you start spewing fox news' party line.
To back myself up you may want to follow this link:
http://ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/glance/viort.htm - Ultrace, on 02/22/2009, -0/+2Once the criminal has "paid their debt" to society through prison, mental treatment, whatever, they are supposed to be PART of society. This law would make that possible. What we've seen historically (and Digg members would gladly cop to) is that if they know someone committed one of these crimes in the past, they wouldn't accept them in society.
- Uriah, on 02/22/2009, -2/+4Do not feed the trolls!
- leaprinces, on 02/21/2009, -8/+10 At the University of Law we were studying a lot about sex offenders and their behavior. Allegedly, they never tend to change it.
So, I guess that name changing could only be "helpful" to them... - 64bitllama, on 02/22/2009, -0/+2Criminals are a product of society, so society is responsible for them. You speak as if you think that every criminal out there decided as a child that they were going to be an evil person when they grew up. People are a product of their surroundings and circumstances. Nobody decides they want to be a 'bad' person.
"Once a thief, always a theif" - You seem to be basing your opinion on some jingly little cliche. Good work. - vio3, on 02/22/2009, -2/+4This isn't right -no matter how I look at it. Sorry, but not everyone comes out perfectly rehabilitated out of prison. The chances of repeat offenders to do it again not only goes up now, but the people have no way of knowing.
- 64bitllama, on 02/22/2009, -0/+2That's because the prison system doesn't really rehabilitate. The reason there are so many repeat offenders is because prisons are ***** and ineffective. That's something that really needs work.
However, changing these criminals names is a good idea. That is an important part of rehabilitation, and it isn't like it makes them immune to the law, should they recommit. It will only serve to protect them from everyday people who feel they have a need to personally enact vengeance or justice themselves - somejuicy, on 02/23/2009, -0/+2Big irony. Giving them a chance would be great for them to start a new life. However, these action also need ways to make sure that those ex-criminals will behave themselves.
- grungegbunny, on 02/22/2009, -0/+2I think if they are going to be released within their life time they MUST be separated from the prison population of those that will not. It is societies duty that they will be ready and fit to rejoin the community and world when let go.
- Demand911Truth, on 02/22/2009, -0/+2Most people deserve a second chance (within reason). Most sex offenders are never offered this chance, so I tentatively support this decision.
- Murdats, on 02/22/2009, -1/+3your point? did I say we have no crime? does america have no paedophiles?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nambla
america has a whole organisation based around this belief. - AirRaven, on 02/22/2009, -0/+1So, forget about repairing society's cockups, and just burn them to the ground?
Nice. Your sense of empathy is truly heartwarming. - inactive, on 02/22/2009, -0/+1Beware of old guys named "Free Candy"!!!
- elwoodblues, on 02/22/2009, -2/+3Fritzl is Australian...he is now known as Bruce and living on Ramsey St.
- shodanx, on 02/22/2009, -0/+1the world is too dangerous for kids so I'm not having any
there, killed two birds with one stone - Amadeus2490, on 02/22/2009, -0/+1MIcroview: I label it as "raping children", because it's without their consent. The children never have any idea what's going on, they never like it and they're very often threatened or abused.
Homosexuality is between two consenting adults who have legal standing; Pedophilia simply isn't. I don't understand how they could be viewed as the same thing, even today.
I realize that there are people who are beyond help. But the truth is that many sex offenders are unfairly tormented for the rest of their life due to a teenager lying about their age, or an unfair divorce settlement preventing them from seeing their children. I think sex offenders should be individually studied and judged for their own situation. If it's something like a father desperately wanting to spend time with his son who lives in Missouri against his mother's permission, I really don't think he should be charged with kidnapping. If it's something like a 17-year old lying that she's 18, I don't think the 21-year old should be charged with rape. If people in these examples could go to counseling, or whatever and have it on record that they're mentally stable and willing to learn from their mistakes, they should NOT be tormented, or threatened for the rest of their life. They certainly shouldn't have tow orry about being killed. - Krissam, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1I'm sorry, but you're telling me to check facts and linking me to a 15 page wikipedia article, yet you did not say anything which conflicted with what i said. So I'm having a hard time seing what i said that was wrong?
- t0x2c, on 02/22/2009, -1/+2I applaud both of you for devising reasons and drawing a conclusion, rather than drawing a conclusion and making up reasons to go with it. This is how constructive debate happens.
