- inactive, on 03/16/2008, -6/+42Blasts have wounded more than 150 people at this Albanian army base. 4 dead are confirmed.
There has happened some suspicious stuff over there lately: An Amery helicopter disappeared in the mountains but no wreck was found. Some different parties were considering 5% barrier for the next election, which would kill most of the smaller parties. Macedonia a neighbor country of Albania created a virtual (and ridiculous) visa crisis some weeks ago, as a result of this the Albanian population in Macedonia couldn't travel anymore to their relatives and friends just over the border, considering these people are native there and have rights as citizens just as the Bulgarian population (there are about 1 million Albanians in Macedonia, or 30-50% of M. overall population) this was clearly a political move to destabilize the region just after Kosovas Independence and the Serbians unrests. + There are only 2-3 weeks left until Albania will be invited to join NATO, that's why there were American specialists at the military base, they were doing some military preparations for the NATO. - JPOnion, on 03/16/2008, -1/+17http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLdF7_PC3GM
Another angle, a little closer to the explosions by the look of it. - FBMGriever, on 03/16/2008, -1/+16I'm kinda surprised that an explosion of that magnitude managed to harm only 150 people. Something of that size seems like it would do a lot more harm imo.
- inactive, on 03/16/2008, -2/+14This was in Albania, you dumbass. Tirana is the capital of Albania. Go troll about Kosovo in another thread.
- PaulPinfield, on 03/16/2008, -3/+15Nice to see there is still plenty of hate in the world...
- digindrivefast, on 03/16/2008, -1/+11The storage of left over munitions is very tricky. Those are incredible blasts. Perhaps it is good that these went off as they did in one out of control episode. Sad that they will have more by the "boat load" to replenish and line the pocket of some contractor. I know what a "controlled disposal blast" feels like, this had to be so intense and scary!
- Tonorific, on 03/16/2008, -3/+12Look, it's just another explosion that could be felt in neighboring countries. Nothing to see here, move along.
- brad3378, on 03/16/2008, -2/+10wow
- inactive, on 03/16/2008, -4/+11There are no Serbs in Albania. Don't spread your miss information into the world.
- woofers07, on 03/16/2008, -2/+8those blasts are very bi.......OH MY GOD!
- Adamande, on 03/16/2008, -2/+8To my knowledge, the Albanian people are much older than you seem to believe. They originated from the Illyrians a couple of thousand years ago and were a part of different Greek colonies until they fell under Ottoman rule in 1385. The Albanian national hero, Skanderbeg, formalized an Albanian state, fought the muslims and actually slowed the Ottoman attack on Europe a great deal. After Skanderbeg died, the Ottomans took heavy revenge on his country, eradicating the old Christian culture as best they could. At the end of the 1400's the country fell completely into Ottoman hands and remained occupied for over 400 years.
Furthermore, Albania has been fighting for Kosovo for a couple of hundred years, insisting that the border between Kosovo and Albania is "artificial" as both countries consist mainly of the same ethnic and cultural population. I don't really know enough about the history there, considering I don't live there, but I hope everyone just lets the people in Kosovo decide for themselves whether they want to merge with yet another country after getting rid of Serbia, or just be plain "Kosovo". - inactive, on 03/16/2008, -2/+8"Albanians are Muslims and not Illyrians at all." - You have a serious problem my friend, apparently you don't know the differences between ethnicity and religion, this can lead to serious miss understanding of history. I know most Slavs in the region fully identify them selves with some kind of Christianity, but this doesn't apply for the Albanians, you can be Albanian and believe (or not believe) in anything you want.
"I know people have posted it around the Internet because it makes what NATO is trying to do there seem right." - Right...of course you're not mentioning the official 26 million Euros which Serbia pumps every year into Internet/Big media propaganda for their interests. Brainwashed people produce brainwashing propaganda...
And just for the record: The video is about a terrible and disastrous explosion near Tirana, the capitol of Albania, and not about the terrible things the Serbians have done in the Balkans. - JPOnion, on 03/16/2008, -0/+5There's a longer version of the original video Inthenameofmine posted here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QP1_c8s2GSM&feature ...
At around 4:10 he turns around, looking inside his house. Ceiling tiles have come down, the insides are thrown everywhere. To have that much destructive force even at that distance...damn... - Darkseit, on 03/16/2008, -1/+6Jerk-off-Hyman56 and his ilk are what's causing the problem in the region. I'm willing to bet you were one of the people stupidly stoning the McDonalds and embassies in Belgrade vowing never to forget the glories of 1398. let it go man, you lost.
- gerrylazlo, on 03/16/2008, -2/+7That's probably the biggest non-nuclear explosion I've ever seen. Even bigger than that one where the solid rocket fuel was stored.
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-520563751 ... - wotannn, on 03/16/2008, -1/+67 dead more than 240 wounded.
to clarify: it didn't happen at once, people had enough time to evacuate. Firstly, a fire spread in the factory, where missiles and gunpowder started to burn. Later on, the explosion happened. Nearly 30-40 min later.
Flames are still on, now 22 hrs. - Vullkan, on 03/16/2008, -1/+6During the communist time in Albania that place was used as a military emergency base so if the country gets into war, folks can grab arms to fight, And about the Muslim thing, Albania was the First atheist country, by Constitution, And people there are made up 3 religions, not only muslims
- warriorscot, on 03/16/2008, -0/+4Or it could have been an accident after 30 odd years or more some of the munitions would be a little unstable and makes accidents allot more likely especially if they were in their taking inventory or moving things around in preparation to NATO entry. An accident seems more likely given that to attack a military base is a hard thing and attacking a munitions depot is harder its about as "hard" as a target can get.
- maremv, on 03/16/2008, -3/+7And to think those little things under that huge fireball are houses...
- Vullkan, on 03/16/2008, -0/+4I was paragliding in a valley near Prishtina, I heard the boom 3 times, after i heard the news, i couldn't believe that the explosion could be heard so far. Same thing happened in Skopje.
- wotannn, on 03/16/2008, -1/+5You're totally out of it. This explosion occurred in Gerdec close to Vora in the highway between Tirana and Durres. I am a muslim though, but i hate Iraq and Afganistan; and i am so pro-american, but just thinking there are people thinking like you makes me throw up.
Albanians are muslims so what!? Albania has a 70% muslim population. Don't judge things by their covers dumpass. We are the most pro-american country in the world. Don't know if you watch television ; but the above quote can be proved by the visit of your president in Albania . ( not KOSOVO :D:D )
(for you: Serbs kill but they're orthodox so they are ok. Albanians remain reticent but they are muslims so *****'em. I'm really sorry for the world hanging your type.) - Adamande, on 03/16/2008, -1/+5Ok, you've read the wiki-article, but apparently you didn't read any other encyclopedia articles which all say the same thing. You can educate yourself further with this:
http://www.britannica.com/eb/article-9110556/Alban ...
http://ancienthistory.about.com/library/bl/bl_alba ...
http://encarta.msn.com/encyclopedia_761561564_3/Al ...
http://samvak.tripod.com/pp31.html
http://www.kroraina.com/knigi/en/nm/kosovo.html
http://www.alb-net.com/illyrians.htm
And like Inthenameofmine keeps telling you, ethnicity has absolutely nothing to do with religion. I can change religion tomorrow without suddenly changing my genetic makeup as well.
I'd like to see the sources you base your claims on, though, cause they are quite different from what I've read and learned in school. - brad3378, on 03/16/2008, -0/+4A Little closer? Holy ***** - that blast broke the guy's windshield!!
Fast Forward to 1:10 - lucutus, on 03/16/2008, -0/+4Um this just happened yesterday. It has hit the MSM. As of 11am my time(24 hrs after the explosion) there are over 700 articles on Google news about this. http://news.google.com/news?source=ig&hl=en&rlz=&o ...
It's even on FAUX news http://www.foxnews.com/wires/2008Mar16/0,4670,Alba ...
So what is this "blackout" you speak of. - arTech, on 03/16/2008, -1/+4Once again. That explosion is in Albania.
- inactive, on 03/16/2008, -1/+4here it is with slightly higher bitrate: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8BVjAiAwhFc&fmt=18
- Daiken, on 03/16/2008, -2/+5Sheesh dude, there's been enough blood shed cause of Kosovo and Serb fighting. Just let Kosovo go.
- Adamande, on 03/16/2008, -1/+4Hard for me to say much about these books, as I don't have them in front of me and probably won't until this discussion has disappeared in the black hole of Digg archives, but from what I could find on the net, Michael Errington's book doesn't seem all that reliable.
http://historyofmacedonia.org/AncientMacedonia/err ...
And Stavrianos repeats Errington's claims so I'm not sure about him either.
http://historyofmacedonia.wordpress.com/2007/03/15 ...
They are both being called "greek propagandists".
And there are huge problems with "taking what's theirs back" cause how far back do you want to go? And who do you want to give this opportunity to? Should 300 million Americans move out of the US and give it back to the Indians? Should Israelis move out of the Middle East and give the land back to the Palestinians?
Kosovo probably wants to be independent, but should they choose to merge with Albania I think Serbia and everyone else should just accept it. You can't seriously mean you'd like the people in Kosovo to live under forced occupation just so Christians can get back at Muslims for stealing some land several hundred years ago? - inactive, on 03/16/2008, -5/+8Hey, anyone have an idea in the world why this isn't at the top of the front page of U.S. news outlets? This is huge news. That's really weird. They cover 30 buddhists getting killed, and nothing on what will end up being hundreds? There's a blackout on this story.
- Persian5Life, on 03/16/2008, -1/+4self determination, if they want to be independent let them be, you cant force your will onto others.
- Daiken, on 03/16/2008, -1/+4Well, based on what the first guy posted, only 4 confirmed dead. 30>4.
- Adamande, on 03/16/2008, -0/+3Well, you have to understand it's kind of hard for people to follow you in a discussion if your sources aren't available to them. You should perhaps have spent a couple of minutes digging up a few articles on the net that supported your view. It would help me believe the stuff you say. Right now, I only have your word for it. No second opinions, no backups and no sources to check it against. That's not enough for me. I never base my opinion on a single source, and since you can't back your statements with anything easily available I'm not really equipped to keep this discussion going and I will have to get back to you in a couple of months when I've had a chance to read those books.
- Rev0lver, on 03/16/2008, -1/+4Such a shame...
- graemee, on 03/16/2008, -0/+2To make it worse, any of these explosions could be throw live shells around the area. Probably what the smaller explosion did to cause the larger one. Apparently some of this ammo is 60+ years old making it very unstable.
- Adamande, on 03/16/2008, -1/+3So your source is your grandfather (who was an orthodox christian?) and had a horrible personal experience that would make him very angry and apparently extremely one-sided and emotional in his critique. While my sources are what most third-party historians on the subject seem to agree on. If you have any sources at all except this one person in your family, like perhaps some links to summaries of some of these books you vaguely mention, it would be a great help.
I fail to see how any of this has anything to do with 2008 though. Albania is a country today, like any other country in the region, and the people have as much right to be there as any other people in the region. And even if the Ottomans invaded, raped and murdered until they populated Albania in its' entirety, it doesn't change anything. My ancestors, the vikings, pretty much raped their way through Ireland and most Irish people have viking-DNA. That doesn't suddenly make them Norwegian or Danish. They are still considered to be Irish by the entire planet. But perhaps to you, they're not... - mal1964, on 03/16/2008, -0/+2War is ugly!
- warriorscot, on 03/16/2008, -0/+2Running would probably be a good idea.
- Tossrock, on 03/16/2008, -1/+3Jesus ***** christ, look at the displacement of the smoke column as the blast wave reaches it
I would NOT have wanted to be hit by that - Tossrock, on 03/17/2008, -0/+2This is malware spam, do not click it
- wotannn, on 03/16/2008, -1/+3And who is congested here? WTF. Slaves invaded Balkan in the middle age. Only thracks and illyrians are home-brew in Balkan. Turks came to Balkan only in the 1400s. Illyrians are predecessors of nowadays Albanians, and there are no mixtures. We have Serbs, Turks that live inside their communities. There can be one exception with Bosnia and Herzegovina people whom are thought to be mixed with Serbs and later share culture and language but religion. Just get yourself fixed.
- judicar, on 03/16/2008, -0/+2Dugg for the cameraman not noticing the huge shockwave coming at him.
- jmpeagle, on 03/16/2008, -1/+3that may only have been the confirmed casualties at the time. I believe 4 have been pronounced dead as of right now.
- dogslayeggs, on 03/16/2008, -1/+2HOLY *****!!!! Imagine if that was going on in your own neighborhood!!! That ***** would be nuts... I wouldn't know what to do!
- paloooz, on 03/16/2008, -0/+1He's right. I can tell by the pixels, they are all wrong.
- solid12345, on 03/16/2008, -0/+1If Albanians want to be together with Albanians they should go back to Albania. This Kosovo independence crap is *****, Kosovars are not a real ethnic group. Religious is irrelevant, the fact is just because one minority ethnic group occupies another nation or empire's territory for a long time doesn't give them free reign to declare independence. What next, should we give the Germans who live along the Volga independence because they have lived there for centuries in Russian territory?
- beasty_dave_Mk2, on 03/16/2008, -1/+2the fireworks factory exploding is as big imho
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-612612189 ... - 2oonhed, on 03/16/2008, -0/+1they may be trying to hide their actual location for safety reasons......you never know what kind of trouble your government, or extortionists, or thieves can cause you, or even why.
- megaloid, on 03/16/2008, -1/+2Understatement of The Month. Thank you, Milkman Dan.
- Herena, on 03/22/2008, -0/+0It was tragic..But what is crazy is that the owner of the socalled "fabric of demunition "is an albanian having a greek nationality.. there are many suspicions and I hope that investigations will find this criminal band to me seems to be an international one !
