- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -13/+63The only nation that has actually tried to overthrow democratically elected officials in Venezuela is the USA.
The Venezuelan people stopped us. - timetofly, on 09/07/2008, -5/+54 "Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable." jfk
- canewediggit, on 09/07/2008, -4/+45kind of like how the enemy of the soviets was the taliban? or the enemy of iran was saddam?

Wow.
Just wow. - zmedico, on 09/07/2008, -16/+47Considering that the U.S. orchestrated the conflict in Georgia, and now the U.S. is threatening to install a missile "defence" shield in Poland that's really intended to augment "first strike" capabilities, it seems quite understandable that the Russians are seeking new foreign military alliances. Welcome to Cold War II.

Nuclear Chicken in Poland: Putin Can’t Afford to Back Down
http://digg.com/politics/Nuclear_Chicken_in_Poland ... - mikesoba, on 09/07/2008, -19/+46Many thanks to George, Jr., Cheney and all of the Neo-cons, as well as the blustering of the Republican candidates, for re-igniting Cold War II.
- Waiting2awake, on 09/07/2008, -5/+30Good point.
- leha, on 09/08/2008, -8/+31People on digg should really read what was/is going on in Venezuela. Hugo Chávez is democratically elected president of this country who is supported by huge majority of the population. Not only this but there was a coup against him orchestrated by USA companies and CIA. He was imprisoned for 2 days but eventually he had to be released because tens of thousands of people flooded the streets of the capital and army refused to shoot at them. Like it or not but the guy does represent people of Venezuela even more they are ready to die for him. Why do you say he is a bad or somehow evil? He freed people of Venezuela and just for this fact many bad things that he did can be forgiven in my opinion.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2002_Venezuelan_coup_ ...
If you say that Venezuela is not democratic then fvck this kind of notion of democracy, fvck the democracy that does not represent majority of population, fvck the democracy that makes few rich but keeps most of people poor, fvck democracy that starts wars and kill tens of thousads. Fvck USA democracy that ready to go in bed with UAE and Saudi monarchs for a barrel of oil. Why USA does not teach kings of middle east how to live? - phnx0221, on 09/07/2008, -6/+27Why are you getting dugg down for this? Truth gets dugg down when people don't want to hear it? The US government actually admitted complicity. They funded opposition parties, provided material and coverage for the opposition media. They then supported the coup leaders, and then had to quietly pull back when the people demanded the return of their democratically elected leader. The only reason why we didn't involve ourselves even more, was because we had an upcoming war with Iraq to deal with. Hell, the (Jimmy) Carter foundation was giving advice to opposition leaders for their economic stranglehold (or, attempted I should say) on the national oil refineries, but then had to move back and officially recognize the results when Chavez was reaffirmed by election again four months later.
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -5/+25Are you seriously claiming that Venezuela is a threat to the USA?
Do you still believe Iraq was a threat to the USA? - timetofly, on 09/07/2008, -1/+19Your right of course but find it hard to blame JFK for that since the gulf of tonkin incident did not occur until 1964. and JFK died in Nov.or f963 .The Gulf of Ton kin Resolution was addressed by Lyndon B. Johnson as a joint resolution of the U.S. Congress passed on August 7, 1964 in direct response to a minor naval engagement known as the Gulf of Ton kin Incident. It is of historical significance because it gave U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson authorization, without a formal declaration of war by Congress, for the use of military force in Southeast Asia. The Johnson administration subsequently cited the resolution as legal authority for its rapid escalation of U.S. military involvement in the Vietnam conflict....so I would blame Johnson not Kennedy not to sure he knew everything that was going on over there..But I am sure if he was skill alive he would shoulder his share of blame
- gbudavid, on 09/07/2008, -4/+21This is probably why the USN deployed,or reavtivated a Fleet in the Carribean...
- vroom101, on 09/07/2008, -6/+23. . . and all of sudden "Cold War II" just warmed up a few degrees . . . not good.

Is that what you call illegal wars of aggression these days? - akinapb, on 09/08/2008, -3/+18Russia is playing this game smart - we antagonize them by building missiles close to their border, and they react by increasing their presence in the Western Hemisphere. It's only blow-back.
- phnx0221, on 09/07/2008, -1/+16Would the US allow surveillance planes to fly over our borders? Would they allow it if Venezuela played a critical part in the overthrow (albeit temporarily) of our government? Absolutely not. Planes would likely get shot down. It was an illegal act authroized by our department of defense. Venezuelan authorities were respectful enough to give them a warning not to fly over their territory.
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -7/+21It's a pretty ironic statement coming from the president who failed to get out of Vietnam when he had the chance. Millions of lives could have been saved if he would have taken his own advice.
- raisputin3, on 09/07/2008, -6/+19And by that you mean absolutely no threat at all
- gquaglia, on 09/07/2008, -16/+29Russia is reaching out to its dwindling list of friends in the world.
- BillE3, on 09/07/2008, -17/+29Hugo Chavez is hedging his bets by trying to make friends with Hezbollah and Russia at the same time. Either one would be happy to take his country from him.
- altgeeky1, on 09/08/2008, -0/+11vault's not much of a fan of democracy, when it differs from his choices...
- fuzzybeard, on 09/08/2008, -1/+12Anyone want to take a bet on how long it's gonna be before:
1) An announcement of a drastic buildup of USN fleet resources at GTMO?
2) There's a major military "whoopsie" in the Caribbean from any of the forces involved? - Lunarbunny, on 09/08/2008, -3/+14We posture there, they posture here. It's just nationalistic dick waving.
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -8/+19Venezuela may pose as much of a danger to the USA as Iraq did in 2002.
Or Grenada in 1983. - vimbuza, on 09/08/2008, -3/+14Two words, Monroe Doctrine.
- m0tbaillie, on 09/08/2008, -3/+13China doesn't spend even close to a trillion dollars a year on their military. You know who does, though? That's right, us.
The US spends approx. $430 billion per year on their military (give or take) and that's approaching 50% of the total world military spending. We spend more than the next dozen nations combined.

You want to take shots at "spinless pansy-ass do nothing Liberals"? Come take a shot at me you weak-kneed bitch. I vote democrat *AND* I'm military. - UtahApocalyse, on 09/08/2008, -9/+19So im sure the U.S. will have a hissy fit over this. Yet it is completely ok for us to have our navy off of Georgia.
- barstegry, on 09/08/2008, -9/+18Venezuelan Navy? 2 sailboats, a dingy with a trolling motor and Hugo's 70 ft party yacht does not make a Navy... just saying.
- phogasmic, on 09/08/2008, -7/+16thanks Bush. You and your neo con puppet masters have got your cold war again. Too bad the "commies" have the upper hand this time considering that both of these countries have massive oil reserves, enough oil to match our massive debt.
- inactive, on 09/08/2008, -0/+9"What we do now to stop him? "
Stop him from what? Being the democratically elected leader of Venezuela? - Pinkertinkle, on 09/08/2008, -2/+11Well we do it to them all the time I guess it's only fair.
- phnx0221, on 09/07/2008, -2/+11They've been doing that for a while though. Last year, they were in trouble with venezuela for unauthorized flying of surveillance planes over Venezuelan territory.
- publiclurker, on 09/08/2008, -3/+12blowback is a bitch. We tried to overthrow his government and you are surprised that he didn't appreciate it?
- AgmLauncher, on 09/08/2008, -0/+9Breaking news: Russians suddenly realize that rust doesn't float, fleet sinks.
- NeverReturnKid, on 09/08/2008, -1/+10You forgot to thank the complacent Democrats.
- inactive, on 09/08/2008, -5/+13he has a point though, Chavez was elected, Bush actually wasn't, so to me venezuela is a democracy, the US is far from it
- publiclurker, on 09/08/2008, -1/+9And the fact that Bush bogged us down both militarily and economically to the point that all we can do is watch.
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -1/+9They would buy their invisible bio weapons from Iraq. Duh.
- HxChris91, on 09/08/2008, -8/+15Our firm stances in the middle east had very little to do with Russia's assertion of power; more like everything going to Putin's head.
- peacepower, on 09/08/2008, -0/+7Venezuela obviously invited the Russians to join in naval exercises, so why would they be cozying up to Russia? Venezuela supplies a lot of our foreign oil. Could it be that Hugo wants a little back-up in case George decides on a reason to do a regime change on him? Like he did on the Iraqis and their oilfields?
- phogasmic, on 09/08/2008, -1/+8Sunday is Republican day on digg.
- fuzzybeard, on 09/08/2008, -0/+7You might want to quit your snickering. Venezuela has 6 missile frigates, 1 Missile-armed patrol boat, & 2 diesel-electric subs. Any missile or torpedo that can hit home would really ***** up your whole day, wouldn't it?
- publiclurker, on 09/08/2008, -2/+9Cowards like him are scared of everything. That's why they cling so much to their guns and religion.
- sanman, on 09/08/2008, -2/+9or the enemy of the Nazis were the Commies

how does that end again? - avrygoodfrnd, on 09/08/2008, -1/+8Yes, but he probably would have had a better shot if he hadn't died...
- mushoo, on 09/08/2008, -6/+13Oh shove it with the liberty of allies *****. You don't give a ***** about Georgia and liberty, all you care about is bolstering your own fears and positions.
If you really cared about defending liberty and stopping tyranny, you would have at the very least posted this or said something when Georgia stomped all over South Ossetia. - FunkadelicFresh, on 09/08/2008, -3/+10It's not about presidents making good decisions for their people, it's about making money, money, and more money for the big bankers.
Wars are all about profits, and guess what. So is the "War on Terror." Next stop for the US armed forces? Venezuela. Wait and see.
