- zakbroman, on 11/21/2008, -18/+519***** ridiculous.
- chas46, on 11/21/2008, -16/+412 Not cool.
- dantw, on 11/21/2008, -13/+332why not spray paint "I am a Jack Ass" all over the front of the store? it would be the same message.
yes, the guy has a right to wish ill to our new president. and the secret service has the right to investigate him. the public has the right to no longer shop at his store. he has the right to go out of business due to his own jack assery. and I hope all of that happens.
dt - Thinkerofthings, on 11/21/2008, -12/+294About 80 people attended the meeting, including some who defended the store owner, said town clerk Mary Chapman.
"There were folks on both sides of the issue," Chapman said in a telephone interview. "People were passionate of their opinion but very respectful of others."
I have no respect for anyone betting or interested in harm of another, regardless of who it is - chr00t, on 11/21/2008, -5/+187paddle faster, I hear banjos
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -13/+194I voted for McCain and I am still pissed to see how they would take bets on another humans life. Then consider it is the next leader of the Free World. Sad and ponderous.
- Homerr, on 11/21/2008, -14/+184Boycott this *****'s store and drive him out of business, but don't take away his free speech right to be that *****.
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -8/+123They should start a pool on when that store will go out of business. Here's hoping someone wins.
- EatingPie, on 11/21/2008, -7/+101It's sad how divided we've become as a country. Taking bets on a presidential assassination is the epitome of how terrible that division has become -- there was a time when we could disagree, and still be friends, still be human, still be humane. (Unfortunately, this criticism applies to Digg as well -- extreme partisan politics here, though, thank God, nothing suggestive of murder.)
One reason I really like Obama is that he said he'd work to bring both sides together -- which I haven't seen much of yet at the political level, though it's still early in his staff choices. But indeed, I firmly believe this campaign promise is THE MOST IMPORTANT. By far.
Obama needs to lead us away from this crap. Both sides are guilty of their extreme partisan politics. If Obama can show by example that we can move out of our partisan trenches, hopefully people -- and sites like Digg -- will follow!
-Pie - abajaj2280, on 11/21/2008, -8/+96"The sign in the Oak Hill General Store asked customers to place a $1 bet on the date of Obama's assassination, and said "Let's hope someone wins," the Portland Press Herald reported. It was called the "Osama Obama Shotgun Pool.""
I can't believe how ignorant people are. - coheedcollapse, on 11/21/2008, -5/+82I'd be upset as it is, but the little "Osama Obama" and "let's hope someone wins" bits really show that they have malice in their words and they're not just being jackasses. These people really want Obama to get assassinated.
I disliked Bush more than I've ever disliked any president that has been in office, but I never wished that he'd get his brains blown out. These guys are neanderthals. I hope they never breed. - pitchblack16, on 11/21/2008, -9/+82That is just completely insensible. That is the stupidest thing this guy could have done.
- johnboycanada, on 11/21/2008, -7/+71Expect a visit from Secret Service.
- Huangism, on 11/21/2008, -3/+67let's make a pool for when the store will be trashed
- psyclonic, on 11/21/2008, -3/+66I don't remember seeing any of this happening when the "adults" took over in 2000.
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -3/+63Racism, hatred and incitement to violence are not left/right issues. They're human/subhuman issues.
Which side are you on? - stonecircle, on 06/11/2009, -7/+64~Word for the Day~
Sedition: An action inciting resistance to lawful authority and tending to cause the disruption or overthrow of the government. - inactive, on 11/21/2008, -14/+69maybe someone will firebomb this store
who wants to start a pool???? - obliviousfool, on 11/21/2008, -4/+58I saw a bumper sticker today that said "Obama Will Destroy Us," and I thought to myself, "way to stay positive, guy."
- stonecircle, on 06/11/2009, -10/+62I am sad for my country.
- M4dRefluX, on 11/21/2008, -6/+55If this unfortunate event ever happens to become reality, I'm taking a nice long vacation far away from my hometown, Detroit.
- paigeinphilly, on 11/21/2008, -4/+50exactly.
- ngmcs8203, on 11/21/2008, -8/+48TSK the line was crossed when they said "let's hope someone wins." I think that's called "inciting violence".
- sigmaman2, on 11/21/2008, -3/+43I saw one of those signs too. My first thought was "Who is 'Us'?" The bigots? The racists? The people who can't get past a person's name and skin color?
Then I think "Good. Obama SHOULD destroy them." - inactive, on 11/21/2008, -9/+46Incitement to kill our new president is a pretty good thing to worry about, IMHO.
- mrseptic, on 11/21/2008, -2/+39And democracy is only acceptable when your guy wins?
- jmpeagle, on 11/21/2008, -4/+40no one should be in Guantanamo
- paigeinphilly, on 11/21/2008, -10/+45why dont you shoot yourself instead...
damn tool. - JenniferInMO, on 11/21/2008, -1/+35Have you heard anyone here mention that he didn't or shouldn't have a right to say these things? Almost everyone here is horrified, yet respectful of the guy's right to be an idiot. And if you can't see the reason why this guy's pool (and comment that he hopes it comes true) is appalling then there is something seriously wrong with you. STILL, I respect your right to say whatever crazy, moronic stuff you want.
- soopafly, on 11/21/2008, -1/+34I have a dollar
- Batfishy, on 11/21/2008, -4/+37cattle - I get it and I feel like you do. It's sad because I thought "we" were better than this. It's sad because it's an issue at all. I'll really be sad if something happens to our next president.
- Autodidaddict, on 11/21/2008, -10/+42"The sign in the Oak Hill General Store asked customers..."
I was a little surprised someone would be so utterly stupid and that members of the community would come out in public and support him...then I realized this is a town where apparently people are still shopping at a goddam GENERAL STORE.
What is this, 1848? Do they sell new axles for my oxen-drawn buggy? Oh *****, Samantha drowned forging the river, James died of dysentery, and we only have 84 pounds of meat left! Better stop at Oak Hill General Store...... - mcritz, on 11/21/2008, -11/+42Not if you’re planning treason, which is punishable by death.
- kmom5, on 11/21/2008, -1/+32WTF??
Are you serious? You honestly don't see what's wrong with placing a bet like this? Plus, can't you ***** read? People are saying let them do it, I hope they lose all their customers. Who is saying they advocate making them take it down? Get a clue.
For once, leave partisanship out of it. Dem or Republican, he is a human being, and all life is precious, right??? Or does that just count for republicans or people they hope to control one day??? - costumemaker, on 11/21/2008, -0/+31I am under the impression that people consider it OK to call for assassination because of his skin color. With Clinton, they only called for impeachment.. The same for bush, you know? There is some stigma that is stuck with Obama and I think it is horrible.
It is very sad and ponderous.
I hated bush with a passion but I still recognized his presidency. I just actively tried to voice my opinion by calling congress, writing letters and probably having my phone tapped :P Calling for the assassination of any political leader is absolutely unamerican and treasonous. That's not what this country is about. - somedudemanguy, on 11/21/2008, -3/+33"About 80 people attended the meeting, including some who defended the store owner, said town clerk Mary Chapman."
Are you serious? - ironhide, on 11/21/2008, -2/+31Your right to free speech does not preclude our right to say what we think of you.
- awinters, on 11/21/2008, -12/+41As disgusting as that sign is, and it is no matter who you voted for, free speech is free speech. Unless they can prove that he is inciting violence, I don't think he should be forced to take it down. What is right is to expose this behavior and allow the people in the town to show their values by boycotting and picketing the store.
There is still so much ugly racism in this world, but this election has proven that people like this store owner and his supporters are the minority. They can be as mad as they want. All we have to say is, "Scoreboard B**^s. Try again in 4 years." - whatthefu, on 11/21/2008, -8/+37It's not that. The guy's a douche, but this is a debate of free speech.
- JenniferInMO, on 11/21/2008, -6/+35There is no question that this guy is probably not breaking laws, but I hope the whole town boycotts his store and puts him out of business. He has the right to say what he wants but he should bear the consequences if he chooses to use his business to publicly state something offensive.
- getbusyliving, on 11/21/2008, -3/+31I have a can of gasoline and a match
- enki25, on 11/21/2008, -4/+31Brown people, apparently.
- scoobydunc, on 11/21/2008, -3/+29Remember when the Dixie Chicks said they were ashamed to be from the same state as George W. Bush and all those losers burned their records, called them terrible names and said they were terrorists? I'm sure those were the same people who are now defending this store owner saying he has the right to say whatever he wants -- including that he hopes someone assassinates our next leader of the US, a good man and husband, and father to two young girls. Yes, this man has a right to say this, and no, there shouldn't be a limit to free speech. But one has to hope that this gets national attention and this man realizes what "going too far" is -- even if it is allowed legally.
- DreKor, on 11/21/2008, -1/+24let's hope someone wins?
- clickmyface, on 11/21/2008, -4/+27My interpretation is that having "Let's hope someone wins" on the sign disqualifies it as being protected speech. Promoting or advocating violent action or harm is not protected.
- theonlywizdum, on 11/21/2008, -1/+24I believe this is what you civilized people would call a "corner store". There are still some places in this country where the big corporations haven't bought out everything.
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -7/+29Why don’t we start a betting pool to see if her store burns down?
