I've done my part sending a letter to my MP and digging every Digg story on the subject. - Zippo, on 06/25/2008, -12/+219Dear America,
Stay the ***** out of other countries - especially your god damn lobbyists.
Signed,
The rest of the god damn world - lordfoul, on 06/25/2008, -0/+137The Canadian government is not blindly following at all, their Prime Minster knows exactly what he is up to. He has always been an American kiss ass.

- MooseJawMan, on 06/25/2008, -0/+71When will they learn. Our Canadian government is blindly following the states and letting big business write the laws. The US laws put into effect years ago to 'combat' music piracy hasn't done a thing to stop it. Laws have to keep up with technology, not ignore what is happening in the real world, hoping keep the status quo from generations back. Next thing we'll be privatizing the military, prisons, and de-regulating everything that was originally designed to protect consumers.
Welcome to the new Police State. - Surferess, on 06/24/2008, -19/+83Hey Canada, you're welcome!

Eliminate trade with the Americans, tell them to shove their goddamn MAFIAA approved laws and DRM up their ***** collective jewhollywood asses.
Our laws here are just fine and are in NO need of updating.
Who can we elect that is immune to corruption and colluding with Uncle Sams horrible bastard children? - imacommi, on 06/25/2008, -0/+33Hegemony at it's best...
- layzice, on 06/25/2008, -1/+34Dear Rest of the World,
As you can see, we currently have an excess of extremely greedy lowlifes who think they are entitled to an obscene amount of the worlds resources because they can "sing" or "act". Having taken hold of to much power here, because we were kind enough to grant them copyright(that's right, we did it to ourselves), we apparently no longer have the power(Read: Money) to oppose them. As such, I would like to call in any markers we still hold, and ask the rest of the world to "disappear" these people for us when they visit your country as they are to well protected here.
Signed,

Stand up for yourself and quit being just "America's hat". Otherwise, you have nothing to cry aboot, eh.
Signed,
America
P.S. Americans hate that ***** as much as the rest of the world does. We don't like our own lobbyists. You think we want them spreading their crooked influence around the world? Some of us WANT other countries to be independent so that we can point at them as an example of policy that does work, rather than the corporatist ***** that gets piled on us here. - earthforce1, on 06/25/2008, -0/+24So did I - I got a form letter from the industry minister, ( I printed my response in another thread) and emailed the head of all major parties saying this is the time to bring the government down. Only the NDP responded - I have been a long time conservative at heart, but I am seriously planning to vote Green or NDP over this... If I have to put up with a term of nanny state socialism to preserve my online rights, I guess that is the price to pay.
- Lehel, on 06/25/2008, -0/+23I wrote to my MP and to my surprise I got a reply....and a knowledgeable one at that within 3 days. Here is the reply.
Dear Lehel,
Thank you for writing me concerning the Conservative Government's Bill C-61: An Act to Amend the Copyright Act.
Since the government announced its intention to table this legislation last year I have called for balanced reform to our copyright regime. As Official Opposition Critic for Consumer Affairs I feel that new copyright legislation should protect the rights of content producers while allowing consumers to fully enjoy their purchases.
The Conservative government's legislation introduced on June 12, 2008 fails in some respects to recognize the changing way in which Canadians enjoy media. This legislation must allow for private, not for profit, use of media which was legally purchased. The principle of fair use is a worthy goal that should be reflected in Bill C-61.
I am concerned that under the proposed bill, consumers who by-pass digital locks on media that they have legally purchased will run afoul of the law. This could prevent consumers from copying music they have legally purchased to other devices such as their computer or MP3 player.
I believe that Canada's copyright law is in need of reform. However, reforms must be fair and balanced to benefit consumers while also protecting the rights of creators. At present, Bill C-61 does not accomplish this. As such, I will actively work to amend the bill when it is before the Industry, Science and Technology Committee of which I am Vice-Chair.
Sincerely,
Hon. Dan McTeague, P.C., M.P. - shanealeslie, on 06/25/2008, -1/+24I'm on a consumer strike. I chose years ago not to pirate (conflict of interest with my profession), but if the stuff I want to buy has use restrictions - I'm not buying it.
- DangerCollie, on 06/25/2008, -1/+23Seems to be a little cross border neocon traffic in both directions. Some Canadian officials participated in trying to throw Obama off stride during the primary with some trade comments and John McCain goes up there for a fund raising trip. Too many times US regs have found a friendly echo up north.
I'm telling you, if we don't hunt these chuckleheads down and put them away they're going to continue to be a thorn in our side. Not content to merely poison our country, they're trying to spread to uninfected areas. They're a cancer on democracy and you can't negotiate with cancer. - cfuse, on 06/25/2008, -1/+22When you see what America does to it's allies, is anyone surprised that other countries go to such lengths to avoid friction? The best any of us can hope for is that America is busy bringing freedom to people other than ourselves.
- phosphite, on 06/25/2008, -2/+21Canada should be telling the U.S. to ***** off and threatening to turn off the Oil tap.

- Lancelot9201, on 06/25/2008, -1/+19The heavy handed tactics that is being used by Washington, to insure that Corp. America will continue to support their re-election campaigns, is going to backfire one of these days. It seems that every other day we are alienating another nation & its people. All I've got to say to those in Washington is "What Goes Around, Comes Around". With all the other things that need serious attention We've got ambassadors pressuring Canada over something that only benefits the Music/Video Business. My God, how about using that energy to fight Global Warming, The deteriorating education system, The need for alternative fuel, etc., etc., etc.
- BoneStamp, on 06/25/2008, -1/+18First the CIA sets up shop in Ottawa (2005) and derails Chretien's bill to legalize marijuana, now this!

- apu95, on 06/25/2008, -1/+16Such *****...
What we need here in Canada is a party like the Pirate Party in Sweden, and have them tell the US/MPAA/RIAA to shove their bill up their asses. - Trublmakr, on 06/25/2008, -1/+15Dugg by a Canadian for telling the "inconvenient" truth. We ought to blame ourselves for being spineless on this issue - not America for trying to assert a self-serving agenda.
- oxymoron69, on 06/25/2008, -0/+13No, and hopefully never will. I think it'll be shoved down our throats after the summer.
- Nintendesert, on 06/25/2008, -3/+16It's always easier to blame America than to blame your own ***** government and the people you elected yourself.
- oderdigg, on 06/25/2008, -0/+12Of course. WIth DRM being the main pain in the ass, who wants to buy media that can't be transferred from CD to ipod / blank CD.
That last think I need is to buy the same album 4-5 times just to satisfy some fat cat. - Benjmon, on 06/25/2008, -0/+12I am at a loss for words at your stupidity and ignorance.
You are the reason the United States is hated so much.
I guess you enjoy getting ass raped by your own government. - 42Vindictive, on 06/25/2008, -0/+12Hopefully our Liberals will grow a spine and vote it down.

Wait, doesn't this remind you of Canada's torture watch list? So they have the right to put us on lists but we don't? Why am I not seeing our leaders protesting and crying like the sissy Americans did? Oh wait, they're already busy kissing American asses. - SurfingMonkey, on 06/25/2008, -1/+12I hope people remember this as a Conservative party hallmark. My name is Stephen Harper, I lick US gov butt, suck their balls and swallow. On a serious note, the best thing is just to stop watching so much American media. One day, they will realize how useful all the freeloaders were to make their things popular. If windows had not been so easy to copy, it would never have stayed the main PC OS.
- Waiting2awake, on 06/25/2008, -0/+10Good for you. +1 for personal ethics and standing by them.

http://www.politicsofextortion.com/index.php?optio ... - eleete, on 06/25/2008, -0/+10As an American I am ashamed to watch these lobbyists destroy our government, and harm it's very own consumers. Criminalizing them, extorting money from them, and when all else fails yanking the money out of them (thanks to the courts). Now they're extending their reach, causing me to wonder who is the real government when an industry can force laws on unsuspecting, uninformed citizens of many other nations in an effort to line their already full pockets. They cry poor when they are one of the largest money making industries in the world. It's deplorable what they have done to U.S, and now Canadian citizens, and many others. Ask Antigua and Brazil how they're using copyright to undo all the goodwill the US has promised to other nations. And as for the starving artists comment, don't get me started, those poor souls make a penny on their dollar. Insanity at it's best, yet very few with influence stand up for the citizens and consumers. Shameful. Sad.

- gettinDiggy, on 06/25/2008, -0/+9Remember - the most power we have in society is not our pathetic check-in-the-box-every-four-years, it's _how we choose to spend our money_.
Don't support those behind this kind of *****. And don't support companies like Microsoft who are trying to help them. - sixsicsix, on 06/25/2008, -0/+9Has this actually passed yet?
- Technohamster, on 06/25/2008, -1/+10My MP just ignored me. -_-
- Waiting2awake, on 06/25/2008, -0/+9Any of them - as long as they think that we are, when provoked, as dangerous as those that they are trying to get us to be frightened of.
We the citizenry failed. It is our jobs to keep the politicians honest - and nothing keeps them more honest than the healthy fear of the unwashed masses coming for them.
They are simply not worried about us, so they will do what they want, when they want without fear of reprisal. That is the issue.
Note I am not saying violence alone.... but unless we are ready to stand and fight for our freedom - we probably don't deserve it. - BoneStamp, on 06/25/2008, -1/+10Yup, agreed. The US will always try to ***** with Canada and Canada has to stand up for what it believes in. They did that with the Iraq war (went to Afghanistan instead)... but they didn't do it when Chretien wanted to legalize marijuana... they gave in on that one, and they'll probably give in on this one too.
