- asdfasdf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12You fail to understand the US' policies towards, well, everything! Let me break it down to you by using the War on Drugs as an example.
Can't stop drug supply nor demand. Increase penalties towards drug users/pushers.
Still can't stop drug supply nor demand. Again, increase penalties.
Decades later, problem is getting worse. Solution? Increase penalties and hell, add a few new laws. If anyone is caught with a bag of Pot, let's shoot their dog and take away their house.
Decades later, drug demand and supply are sky rocketing. Penalties increase yet again. We're promised that this will help eradicate the "problem."
(cycle goes on for a century)
It's 2006. Heroin is cheaper than ever, every other house on the block is a Marijuana grow-op, legal highs actually work (Salvia for example). I can buy a lot of drugs (including Heroin and Cocaine) online, mailed directly to my house. So now what are they trying to do? Implement harsher penalties of course.
See the pattern? If Patriots didn't work, more Patriots will work. - ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Uh...Patriots didn't work the last time they tried them....what makes them think they will work this time?
- asdfasdf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@roosterjm2k2:
You can't eliminate drugs, that's the whole point. Legalizing and regulating will end almost all drug problems except addiction, which is a medical problem, and needs to be addressed as one.
"Alcohol did not create Al Capone. Prohibition created Al Capone, ... And cocaine does not create drug cartels. America's War on Drugs creates drug cartels."

If drugs were legal, there would be no need for drug dealers. Sure, heroin and crack might cause some problems but those are different from let's say marijuana. I think what asdfasdf is trying to say is that if drugs were regulated there would be less problems, people are gonna smoke pot no matter what, there is no use putting them in jail just for a minor bag of pot, it makes those citizens alienated. Rape, Murder are all serious crimes and are nothing like doing a drug here and there if it's not harming anybody, say for instance pot. There should be laws for serious crimes, but drugs, let's say pot, really should be legal, and taxed, just to make the government happy, but I'm sure the government is making a ton of money through its war on drugs.
- aceg1357, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Patriots do work generally. this isn't the missile defense system or star wars as many call it. they do work. and japanese government is grateful for them since they are the ones who asked for them.
- Zer0kill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Holy crap we already have a ***** load of Patriot launch pads already in South Korea(They all point to North Korea). Oh well they normally launch 4-8 patriots to every incoming missile they detect.
- claylevering, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Stationed in japan far far away from Okinawa - not too many japanese are thrilled by our mere presence, let alone our new missiles.
- asdfasdf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Stop trying to fool yourself into thinking that your drug problem is someone elses doing."
Exactly. Your drug problem is YOUR OWN DOING, stop putting the blame on others. Stop trying to babysit the public. People are free to put whatever they want in their own bodies (in a free country, at least).
If I can ingest cyanide without going to jail, why can't I use a drug? Granted, drugs that actually cause violence, like maybe PCP, would stay banned or be very heavily regulated (We still give it to animals because they don't complain about its psychoactive effects. I think we still give it to kids also, but we might have switched to only using Ketamine for kids).
The reason you can't win the War on Drugs is because people WANT drugs. The reason you can't prohibit Pot use is because people love Marijuana. They want it and will pay for it. The demand for drugs, or more specifically, seeking pleasure is part of human nature and drugs are a part of our society. Every single class of people use drugs. Doctors, lawyers, the whole range of political figures (and most of them DO inhale), news anchors, weathermen, the poor, students, etc. 10% of medical students use speed (meth, amphetamine, Ritalin, etc)!
You cited stupid examples. Drug use is a victimless crime. Who am I hurting if I smoke pot or use LSD? Nobody. With rape you're hurting somebody else. There is no law against raping a blow-up doll is there?
I don't want to end this harshly but you're really an ignorant ***** and it's people like you that are helping Bush and his peoples take away our rights. - ZippidyDoo, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9Needs more used panties.
- Japan1, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1Do we really need more in Okinawa? http://www.hdrjapan.com
- Osjpr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, I just looked out the window here in Pyongyang. The police are running in small circles, waving their hands in the air. :\
- vanetta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Clay" is close to being on target. If you don't know the history of WWII, the US, Japan and Okinawa you might find it a good read. Although it has been my personal experience that most of the Okinawans don't seem to mind too much that we are on Okinawa, there is an extremely vocal "few" who are determined to protest the US presence.
The truth is, that the US being in any nation will bring both good things and bad things for both nations. In this instance, I'd have to personally say the both countries are definitely receiving much more benefit than 'cost' in this relationship. Okinawa is a strategic location for the US and in return we provide defense to Okinawa and Japan.
Unfortunately, in the past there has been service members who have committed some serious crimes off base (look no further than google for more info). This is unfortunate as while it doesn't fairly represent the entire US Military, it makes the most headlines.
As for the affect that the patriot missiles will have on US/Okinawan relationships; I don't believe that it will make the much of an impact. It, like our very presence on the island, brings both good points and what some might call 'bad' points but overall it is a win-win situation. - Zer0kill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm currently stationed in Japan and most Japanese don't give a flying rats ass that we are here. Because the Japanese government picks up bill for all the utilities(water, etc) on the military bases, so it would be cheaper for us to posistion missles over here than pay our bills. Plus if Japan was ever attacked most of the soldiers from the states would need to go through Japan before going into Korea. Japan also has a Self-Defense force but it is very small.
- justice7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i'm just tired of reading pro-pot posts on this site, and people using every excuse in the book to legalize the stuff.
Personally, i've seen it ruin the lives of many people. Maybe those people would have ruined their lives with something else if mary jane didnt exist, but the fact remains that their clutch was weed -- and it drove them to only care about weed.
I don't feel that harsher punishment will detur much, except for maybe on the lower end where if you were to smoke weed you got shot.... and you raise some good points on why that is
but resorting to namecalling (yes i'm talking to all of you above who did so), just shows your mentality and maturity. Smoke another one.
Just keep telling yourselves that you're not frying your brains out.. you certainly could be spending your money on better things.
You're in a state of denial. Much like your government, your country and your people. All in denial. - justice7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2or chuck norris
- kazuhima, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@Monolith5
ugh.. thats "japanese" to u. not "japs". - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1wtf? Whats wrong with saying "japs"? Its like getting offended because when people talk to you they dont address you with your first, middle and last name. "HELLO JON FRANCIS SMITH, HOW ARE YOU TODAY?"
No. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1So what? That digg title is misleading. Local protest perhaps, but the Japs are scared ***** about the way Pyongyang has been posturing itself for the last few years. Remember when they shot a test missile right over Japan itself?
- repins, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I thought this was a story about some "New England" football players who joined the army :)
- diecastbeatdown, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1They just need to put Miyagi out there to karate kick those missiles.
- Bibimbap, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Hattori Hanzo will cut any missiles down in Okinawa
- mrlost117, on 10/12/2007, -9/+5here's to YOU North Korea!
- roosterjm2k2, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2so, asdfasdf, with such a well thought-out creative name like that, Im sure you can enlighten us on what the correct cause of action for trying to eleiminate drugs is?
- Pharaoh777, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Let's see them try to shoot missles over us again!
- justice7, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2under your logic
Laws against killing people created hitmen
Laws against raping girls created rapists
Laws against robbing banks created bank heists
give your head a check, those laws are there for a reason.
Stop trying to fool yourself into thinking that your drug problem is someone elses doing.
