- Blinker1315, on 07/17/2009, -7/+88Since when did kids get info on sex from their parents? I didn't, and I'm 54. As for my sons, I gave them no birds & bees talk, just said, "Mom and I would be like to be grandparents some day... not immediately. You understand? And be safe." They both looked at me, and said, "Got it, Dad."
- Hetman, on 07/17/2009, -4/+55This is what happens when you teach abstinence only education. You see an increase in teen pregnancy, abortions, and std's.
- JoeParanoid, on 07/17/2009, -4/+49It seems that, historically, parents consistently fail in their duty to provide pertinent sex information to their kids. This is why sex education in school was started, not to usurp parental authority but to step in to fill the vacancy. Unfortunately, the right wing would rather children remain ignorant and susceptible to infection and unwanted parenthood rather than allow them the simple facts of life.
- Remmiz, on 07/17/2009, -0/+44I plan on just calling my kids into the bedroom while I'm having sex with my wife. That should do the trick.
- brim4brim, on 07/17/2009, -3/+39Everyone knows many parents are simply too embarrassed to have the conversation with their kids which is why education at school is so important.
Abstinence only education is moronic at best. I went to a CBS catholic school in Ireland and we were told all about birth control, STD's etc... in religion class for gods sake.
Why would you want to leave kids naive and vulnerable, that is what no education does. You can say parents should take responsibility and they should but many won't so it can't be left as the only way to learn. - bigthree, on 07/17/2009, -2/+35That is what the Internet is for

- EdgarG8, on 07/17/2009, -1/+27@Omae thats exactly how I first learned about it. Also from friends older brothers who would pass it to them. Then at school would pass them around to the rest of the kids.
Now a days kids can go online and find all kinds of porn. Back in the day you would need to walk 5 miles in the snow to go get a glimpse of a naked woman carved on a rock. - RogueGenius, on 07/17/2009, -2/+24Children should learn about sex the same way their parents did: from random people on the streets.
The exception being alter boys, who learn even earlier. - uncleosbert, on 07/17/2009, -0/+22i did. my parents were way cool about the whole thing. my mom took me to get birth control when i asked. she and dad were both very approachable and open about questions.

- mille716, on 07/17/2009, -3/+22You're missing the point of the article. Bush promoted this idea of abstinence only sex education with the assumption that sex education should and will be taught at home. It failed miserably.
I know parents "should" teach their kids about sex but depending on families to do it has been now proven to have dangerous sexual health effects on society.
So yes, sex ed clearly is something that government should do. - mille716, on 07/17/2009, -0/+18There's actually a mandatory section of a home economics class on the responsibilities of being a parent at the middle school I work at.

- str1fe, on 07/17/2009, -1/+16That's how I learned everything I needed to know about sex. My girlfriend in 9th grade looked at me weird when she invited me over and I showed up naked with a pizza box though.
- mille716, on 07/17/2009, -1/+15Sex education is about way more than just how to put on a condom.
Speaking of stupid, you missed the point of the article. Evidence now shows that when classes teach proper sex ed, as in not abstinence only, teens and young adults have far better sexual health. So yea, maybe we shouldn't just expect all kids to learn about safe sex through google searches. - michrech, on 07/17/2009, -1/+15The only problem I have with parents being the sole source of such material could best be summed up by the movie "Jesus Camp". Kids with those types of parents (and the less extreme, but still quite ignorant/repressed type) will not get all the information they need to be safe/prepared. I think we should still have some sort of sex education in their schooling (like I did when I hit my Freshman year in High School).
- jasdf, on 07/17/2009, -7/+20Aren't they getting themselves into a vagina?
- kaniz, on 07/17/2009, -1/+13"* Infections with the human immune deficiency virus that causes AIDS rose among boys aged 15 to 19 from 1.3 cases per 100,000 in 1997 to 2.5 cases in 2006."
That's a scary number. Too many people seem to think that HIV/AIDs is
- A gay thing
- Something only old people get
- Something you can tell someone else has based on how they look
- Something that only affects a demographic other than the one they are in
- Something you can only get if you are on the receiving end of penetration.
There needs to be proper education to clear up those misconceptions. I've heard more than one person try to justify having unprotected sex with a complete stranger based on the fact of "They looked healthy" and/or "They said they were clean". I really want to smack some sense into those people.
Plenty of people are living with HIV that look healthy but still have a viral load high enough to infect you. - Jsmuli2, on 07/17/2009, -4/+14porn is, and will always be the best form of sex education.
- KevinG2, on 07/17/2009, -3/+13Or parents could try the whole parenting thing instead of counting on the ed system to do it for them.
- Joab, on 07/17/2009, -0/+9We'll just tell your mom we ate it
- Zdorab, on 07/17/2009, -4/+13As a teenager I can tell you we get more than enough sex education.
- timothiuz, on 07/17/2009, -2/+10The internet is for porn
- emjaymj, on 07/17/2009, -0/+8Yeesh... can you believe the audacity of people who think that tax dollars should be going towards educating children at schools?! Preposterous!
- SammyJr, on 07/17/2009, -2/+9@Doubledown, why would comprehensive sex ed fail? If complete and accurate information is provided, people can make good decisions. A girl can know to be on birth control so if her and her boyfriend get caught in them moment, there's no baby worries. A guy can know to carry a condom with him and make sure it isn't expired.
You would think this is common knowledge, but obviously, it isn't.
Parents have to do their part, but obviously, most aren't. - inactive, on 07/17/2009, -1/+8Home ec?
- kingmanic, on 07/17/2009, -1/+7You're goign to be disappointed. Like a liberal arts degree the majority of your course material is not applicable to the real world.
- banthis, on 07/17/2009, -0/+6And porn is to learn.
- mille716, on 07/17/2009, -6/+12Edit: Another effect of our <formerly> marvelous <Bush abstinence only sex> education system.
- nepidae, on 07/17/2009, -3/+9Oh and also:
"Nearly 10 percent of young women aged 18 to 24 said their first intercourse was involuntary."
Meaning both people were drunk, but it looks more shocking if we make it seem like rape. - nepidae, on 07/17/2009, -1/+7"More than 80 percent of boys and girls said they had received formal instruction before age 18 on how to say no to sex."
Saying no to sex in a classroom isn't really the same thing as saying no to it in a real situation... (well in most cases). - BaronessRouge, on 07/17/2009, -2/+8Just the tip...just for a second...
- FXNGLAS, on 07/17/2009, -1/+6Diseases and a pep talk aren't going to stop teens from ***** like rabbits, but no rubber might sway the girl.
- highpitch83, on 07/17/2009, -0/+5Whoa! slow down there fella! politicians don't do so well with hard numbers. Try some caps lock and back your statement with some ***** religious ethos...
/sarcasm - inactive, on 07/17/2009, -3/+8The right wing would rather everyone remain ignorant.
- kingmanic, on 07/17/2009, -1/+6Ditto. I went to a Canadian catholic jr. high and high school and they covered these topics. You can put chastity devices on your kids so you might as well provide them with information in case they choose to listen to their gonads not their pastor.
- uncleosbert, on 07/17/2009, -0/+5diy!!
- mdude85, on 07/17/2009, -1/+6The first time I ever saw a human birth was a recording of it in 9th grade biology class. The second time was in "Knocked Up". So I'm pretty sure that schools are providing at least 50% of my sex education, and Judd Apatow is providing the rest.
- nepidae, on 07/17/2009, -1/+6I wish I had because I was never able to talk to my parents about it.
- uncleosbert, on 07/17/2009, -3/+7what proof is there that abstinence only education works in africa? i've seen people make that claim, but i've not seen any plausible studies backing it up...
- uncleosbert, on 07/17/2009, -0/+4@ otterp
i do believe the cool factor matters. if your parents are uptight and weird when you approach them about sex, you won't want to approach them. and i was very grateful for that when i got my first one of these:
http://headaches.about.com/cs/triggers/a/ha_orgasm ...
can you imagine how terrifying that was? i feel lucky that i had people around who i could talk to about that.
@ njank
actually, i am a girl. hence the phrase, "my mom took me to get birth control". not "my mom took me to get condoms".
it's an odd assumption you made, because condoms are available nearly everywhere. i had to go to the doctor and get a prescription for pills. as a girl, it's harder to get your hands on something that doesn't require you to trust the guy to use it. - Hetman, on 07/17/2009, -1/+5Kids need to be lead in the right direction though. I think there is more to education than just saying here is google figure it out yourself.
- Paranor01, on 07/17/2009, -0/+4@Doubledown: "If complete and accurate information is provided, people can make good decisions." should also include information on the outcomes of their actions with sex (child, illness, stereotypes, etc). That, also would include informing them that when someone says 'No' they mean 'No'.
- SammyJr, on 07/17/2009, -2/+6@Doubledown, so your solution is to simply throw up your hands and say its the parents responsibility? Hell, there's a comment with 48 positive Diggs from a 54 year old parent who's idea of sex ed is "Mom and I would be like to be grandparents some day... not immediately. You understand? And be safe." With that kind of parental thinking, nothing is going to get better. Teens will continue to get STDs at ever higher rates and there will be more abortions and unwanted babies. This is a public health issue and definitely a place for the Government to be involved.
And you really think that teenagers are totally incapable of learning and rational thought? I have a little higher opinion - I think that most can make a reasonably good decision if they have enough information. Sure, there will be some ***** ups, but with the right knowledge, I think that teens will have better sexual health and become parents when they're ready. -
