- novenator, on 07/06/2009, -4/+32I'm surprised the ruskies trust us after the Bush regime unilaterally withdrew from the ABM (Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty), which was the cornerstone of East/West military accords.
The disarmament of our nuclear arsenals is something that has obvious benefits. When 100 nukes placed in equidistant locations could eradicate animal life on the planet, it was utterly ridiculous that each nation stockpiled thousands of these weapons. Although cutting them out of both defense forces entirely is not going to happen, we should reduce the numbers of bombs to 100 or less for each side. Still enough for 'Mutually Assured Destruction', but not so many that the chance of a mishap, accident, or terrorist attack on one is greater. Not to mention the enormous cost of maintaining an arsenal so large during this world recession. - Misinformant, on 07/07/2009, -2/+26And tomorrow conservatives will whine Obama has less safe because we'll only have enough nukes to destroy the planet 30,000 times over instead of 31,000.
- hmunkey, on 07/07/2009, -1/+19While interesting and promising, these nuclear arms limits are pretty empty gestures. The article says the new limits will be 1,500 to 1,675 warheads - which is still more than enough to glass the world over several times over. From a purely tactical standpoint 1000 nukes and 20000 nukes are essentially the same.
- gforce051, on 07/07/2009, -3/+17Putin probably keeps the leftovers in his garage.
- ctabone, on 07/07/2009, -0/+14Well, it's a start. Any nuclear reduction is probably better than no nuclear reduction.
- lukak, on 07/07/2009, -1/+13*puts on tin foil hat*
- PhoenixAvatar2, on 07/07/2009, -0/+11It's still progress. If you expect things like this to come all at once then you're going to be waiting a long time.
- kidwithsword, on 07/07/2009, -1/+11I wish I had a nuclear arm...
- Jaime2000, on 07/07/2009, -1/+10It looks like a good day for peace.
- DaDrake, on 07/07/2009, -1/+9... seriously? just about everything?
The USA has its faults... but it is also responsible for a whole lot of good in this world also. - overridemymind, on 07/07/2009, -1/+8The internet, The microwave, the automobile, nuclear energy, dental floss, the electronic relay (pretty fracking important, btw), combine harvester, vulcanized rubber, the modern oil well, the skyscraper, transistors, cancer chemotherapy, etc. etc. etc. -- Are all important inventions created by US citizens. The list goes on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_american_inve ... . Now, I'm not too happy with the way my government is conducting foreign (or internal, for that matter) affairs, but not everything the US does (or has done) is the pure evil some people make things out to be.
- NuttyVirus, on 07/07/2009, -2/+9How come that every time a US president goes to Russia there is always a nuclear arms limit i mean is this just a front?
- tk0680, on 07/07/2009, -0/+7No "Obama is appeasing the Commies" posts yet?
I'm impressed, Digg, well done. - AmnesiacJack, on 07/07/2009, -2/+9Eh it's all part of the game. Our government uses them to keep us afraid, they use our government to keep their people afraid. It's all about power and control one way or another, war or peace.
- duggtodeath, on 07/07/2009, -1/+7METAL GEAR?!
- SirBruce, on 07/07/2009, -0/+6Because it's one of the few things US and Russia can agree upon in recent years. Both sides have way more weapons than they need after the Cold War, and it costs money to maintain them. Gradual denuclearization is easy, builds trust over time, and allows for dozens of political photo ops rather than just one.
- WoWii, on 07/07/2009, -2/+8I'm pretty sure both countries secretly have thousands of nuclear/A/hydrogen bombs. Some old some new.
- AmnesiacJack, on 07/07/2009, -0/+6So uh, how about we turn some of them there bombs into nuclear energy / power plants? Not like the radioactive material is just going to go away so how about putting it to work.
- Misinformant, on 07/07/2009, -0/+5'has made us less' **
- Pigeon, on 07/07/2009, -0/+5Its still a good step. The less that exist the less the chance that one is sold, stolen or goes "missing".
- SirBruce, on 07/07/2009, -0/+5No, 1,000 nukes will not "glass the world" even once, let alone several times over. It would be a very bad day for us, though.
The number of nukes was historically more than "needed" because there was a desire to have enough nukes in reserve such that if one side nuked you before you could launch, you would still have enough nukes they couldn't reach to counter-attack and destroy them, thus ensuring the *****-eyed theory of MAD. Advancements in satellite launch detection technology had all but eliminated this need by the 1980s. - dstz, on 07/07/2009, -1/+6"When 100 nukes placed in equidistant locations could eradicate animal life on the planet"
is there a source for this? i thought that the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs was itself so much more powerful that our pile of nuclear weapons, and even that didn't destroy life. - Kidsturk, on 07/07/2009, -0/+5I liked the Fark headline this morning on the same subject:
"US and Russia agree to reduce their number of nuclear warheads, which makes Obama look good and is no skin off Russia's back since they already got drunk and lost theirs" - americanoboy, on 07/07/2009, -1/+5in before insecure trailer trash who define themselves by what their country accomplished rather than their own person accomplishments begin to spam their paranoia.
- PhoenixAvatar2, on 07/07/2009, -1/+5Besides the occasional saber-rattle, I don't think anyone's been too afraid about Russia since about 2000 or so.
- WhiteHatTrick, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3Our government already does basically that, for Russia's expired nukes, and it costs Americans hundreds of millions of dollars. Our government is so f-ing stupid.
- fandyboy, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3Snuke?
- mr138, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3!
- Guitarhammer, on 07/08/2009, -0/+2Meanwhile, China, Russia's new buddy will start to stockpile them.
- askantik, on 07/07/2009, -1/+3Agreed, novenator. While I'd like to see the abolition of all nuclear weapons, I suppose that's unlikely in the real world. At least this is a solid step in the right direction.
- fandyboy, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2I hear it was written on diamond encrusted platinum paper, sealed with the blood of Christ.
- cherrysweet00, on 07/07/2009, -1/+3Everybody gets TOO MANY. There, nice and equal now, eh?
- butterpat, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2Really old people like me wondered if we'd ever see a day quite like this in our lifetime. Surely the Cold War was the abyss of human stupidity.
- erkokite, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2You can't hug your children with nuclear arms.
- TheoWelles, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1You knew!? But Metal Gear was one Armtech's most secretive projects, how did you know?!
- alexllanio, on 07/07/2009, -2/+3Dude.... no matter what, this will be a good thing in the end. Remember Watchmen.
Also is it just me or does it look like Dmitry Medvedev can kick some ass?
I believe we should all be united under the same skies.
I wish i could live in a world were we are all connected as one. - mparker21311, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1Yup.
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/07/07/obama-p ... - inactive, on 07/07/2009, -2/+3worth about as much as the paper it's written on
- kromix, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1You do, Your always plugged in Neo.
/* tinfoil hat on head */ - ldailey06, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1I agree, as John Stewart said: that's great, now fix the economy.
- ButterBuddha, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1I agree, "animal life" won't be eradicated...it'll just be different animals at the top of the food chain. Besides, I'm betting on an awesome mutation, like tentacles....
- hmunkey, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1What I meant was 1000 nukes can destroy every moderately sized and large city on earth, probably killing over half the population and destroying all infrastructure and government - which would lead to billions more deaths through lack of food/control and the disease.
- kromix, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1LOL
- gizram84, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1REX?
- skipvt, on 07/07/2009, -1/+2I wonder if the ruskies will count all the warheads that are "missing".
- skipvt, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1I'd give a buck two fifty for it.
- WhiteHatTrick, on 07/07/2009, -1/+2Now that you've pointed out how pointless this is, why is Obama doing it? Is media-"reality" just a big soap opera?
- sildude, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1Too bad there are still enough nukes to turn this planet into glass.
