- inactive, on 04/27/2008, -23/+56Look how far the empire stretches! The sun never sets on the empire.Nevermind we can't afford this and nevermind we have solutions that don't include this.
I truly believe there's something in th air in DC that turns sane people into warmongers..
Elect a Senator and we get more of this type of insanity. - DigitalBob, on 04/27/2008, -8/+35I'd rather see the military defending this hemisphere than someplace on the other side of the globe. Monroe Doctrine? It makes more sense than what we're doing now. We can't be everywhere at once. I'm broke.
- SilentRamble42, on 04/27/2008, -9/+32I guess they figured the Middle East hates us enough, but Central and South America's hatred isn't up to par anymore.
- lhbaker, on 04/27/2008, -7/+29Will there be a U.S.S. Jimmy Buffet? I'd re-enlist to serve on that one.
- foxfire1311, on 04/27/2008, -8/+25Look, Brazil finds HUGE oil reserves on 24 April.....
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=newsarchive ...
And we decide on April 25th to send the Navy in.... - cnot3, on 04/27/2008, -3/+18The emperor will soon send a fleet of star destroyers to crush the resistance in that sector.
- Cooperjones, on 04/27/2008, -6/+20Do you guys understand Chinese interests with Venezuela, Cuba etc? They took over Russia's super spy station on Cuba for high level electronic eavesdropping on the US. They are drilling in the waters around Cuba right now for oil, because China needs oil. they took over the US' old military command stations plus BOTH sides of the Panama Canal after Jimmy Carter blundered yet another deal to give the Canal that we Americans built with blood and cash in Panama. China opened a shipping port in the Caribbean, too. Do your homework before you tell us that "Diplomacy" == talking to tyrants == works. Do you recall Chamberlain being reamed by Hitler after he thought he had a "good talk" with Adolph before WWII? Let's have tea with Bin Laden, too. Wake up guys. If you don't get it that China hates the US and is just selling us junk to give us a big enough rope to hang ourselves, you don't realize they are still Marxist totalitarians. They murder their own people. Figure it out.
- inactive, on 04/27/2008, -2/+16When friends (and sometimes even foes) dial 911, it's the US Navy that picks up the phone.
Ask anybody who was there first after the Christmas Tsunami back in '04 and a few hundred other less well known natural disasters.
This isn't meant to threaten anyone in South America. It's more of a signal to our friends that we've got your back. - Daniel591992, on 04/27/2008, -0/+11Oh, boy... I'm half-Brazilian and half-American. Although, in all fairness, the oil reserves weren't found on April 24. They've known about it for over a month. The story was written on April 24.
- SouthsideIrish, on 04/27/2008, -2/+12A fleet with one, count them, aircraft battle group. This isn't much of a fleet. I am no warmonger, or even a fan of the military, but I think we can afford to put one aircraft carrier battle group into the Gulf of Mexico. Matter of fact, it is probably already there and they are just shuffling people around, and creating a new command. Lame!
- evilcaptain, on 04/27/2008, -10/+19Could someone cancel Bush's cheque-book already!
- WTFppl, on 04/27/2008, -10/+18By sending our warships down south we'll be able to ship cocain into the North Americans for lower cost, "again"!
- srdine, on 04/27/2008, -2/+9Suddenly I want to play that game
- washingtonydc, on 04/27/2008, -4/+11they're not mutually exclusive
- Hangly, on 04/27/2008, -6/+12Ooooo, I hate it when countries try to defend themselves!
- WTFppl, on 04/27/2008, -3/+9Quote- "It is that the Bush Administration is not tired of its stupidities??? That "threat" makes latinoamerica respond with this type of action!"
I see your perspective and agree with you! - "¡Veo su perspectiva y concuerdo con usted!" - inactive, on 04/27/2008, -2/+8Ya but its a good excuse for the diggiots to bash the US, so it makes the home page.
- DrVoltron, on 04/27/2008, -0/+6We also need to build some more supply depos
- bphicke, on 04/27/2008, -0/+6Yes, but they won't let you drink margaritas.
- inactive, on 04/27/2008, -6/+11You have that backwards dumbass, people are still falling all over themselves to get INTO the US, not out.
The word fascist doesnt mean what you seem to think it does. - HaloZero, on 04/27/2008, -3/+8Monroe Doctrine was about foreign colonization in South America. I'm pretty sure we don't have to worry about anymore.
- LanceStallion, on 04/27/2008, -9/+14I agree, I'd rather see us secure this hemisphere. We seem to have a few problems in our neck of the woods. Maybe a carrier battle group parked off of Hugo's doorstep every now and then will convince him to quit his rhetoric.
- Euler2718, on 04/27/2008, -2/+6Escape implies someone is forcing you to stay here. I don't see the secret police shooting people who try to sneak into Canada or Mexico. When that starts to happen, then I'll worry.
- fsucliff, on 04/27/2008, -4/+8This is just a change in the command structure! Not a change in the policies or goals.
- d1a1s1, on 04/27/2008, -0/+4Sign me up! Latin women so sexy!
- SilentRamble42, on 04/27/2008, -5/+9The Internet isn't in America...
- elipabst, on 04/27/2008, -1/+5If you think that's bad, wait til you find out about all the credit cards he took out in your name.
- inactive, on 04/28/2008, -0/+4Our psi limit has definitely been exceeded I don't know how they expect to power that carrier.
- Bodhinature, on 04/27/2008, -3/+7I think they're realizing that the US is losing its iron grip on Latin America as the governments moves towards the Center-Left. Can't have governments representing the people, you know. Can't have the profits from their own resources going to benefit their respective nations. Latinos have to understand that their purpose in life is to enrich the coffers of US corporations.
- mijelh, on 04/27/2008, -1/+5China doesn't hates the US, they just love money and do everything in their hands to get more, just lake everyone else.
For a Latin American country, which have to choose to align either with China or with the USA, the problem is that Chinese are totalitarians, and as they gain more presence in the world, so does totalitarianism.
Just to finish, when you say that they murder their own people, I cannot help but remember that capital punishment is a reality in the states too (which is no excuse at all for china, of course). Maybe the number of killings is much lower, but that's just a quantitative difference, which IMHO makes very little difference when speaking about human lives. - WTFppl, on 04/27/2008, -2/+6O' the irony, or is that coincidence?
- Aokitsune, on 04/27/2008, -0/+4"Spawn more Overlords"
- whataboutdave, on 04/27/2008, -0/+4Don't worry. The US Constitution will do exactly that in just a few more months.
- inactive, on 04/27/2008, -3/+7Why does the US have a right to "keep" an elected president of any other country "in line?"
- anoneng, on 04/27/2008, -4/+7Good. One aircraft carrier is more than enough to keep people like Chavez in line and fight terrorism. I don't see why we didn't have forces like that close to home before.
- Aokitsune, on 04/27/2008, -1/+4Kreatre's right- those Ecuadorian peasants are all out to destroy the United States and her allies. Because they hate us for our freedom.
- inactive, on 04/27/2008, -3/+6"Talking about all the "evils" of america's capitalistic system"
Obviously the elected leaders of other nations can't be allowed to talk about that. An American might hear and get ideas. - mburner21, on 04/28/2008, -0/+3This article is a little bit presumptuous. I can assure you Stavridis is a very competent man who knows the region immensely. SOUTHCOM is not just some office in Miami with a map of the region and thumbtacks on all the oil reserves. They interact extensively with the region's leaders and I assure you are not just some distant arm of an evil empire.
- WTFppl, on 04/27/2008, -3/+6This land you sit in, "America"(To be more precise, United States) is the land of the most ignorant and arrogant! Do you feel a resemblance?
- smurfsahoy, on 04/27/2008, -6/+9we are a nuclear power that wants pretty much everybody destroyed. And we have pretty close ties to ourselves. We also talk smack about numerous world leaders who aren't exactly like us, and about the "evils" of every other economic system. Ergo, we should be taught a harsh lesson by your logic.
- inactive, on 04/28/2008, -0/+3Its the infested command center which is causing the worst problems for us lately.
- renesix, on 04/27/2008, -3/+6No viejo, ahora mismo estoy en mi casa en la República Dominicana, ademas estoy en Internet NO EN USA. Asi que puedo "escribir" en el idioma que yo quiera.
- Bodhinature, on 04/27/2008, -1/+4None of this was ever about terrorism.
- FeartheKnighted, on 04/27/2008, -0/+3What in the history of our government makes you think it can move that fast?
- Charlotte_Web, on 04/28/2008, -0/+3No, but there's an NAS Key West; it's basically the same thing.
- inactive, on 04/27/2008, -0/+3Maybe the algorithm is based on frequency of diggs, not just quantity. If something gets dugg up very fast, it reaches the front page.
- inactive, on 04/27/2008, -3/+6"I'd rather see the military defending this hemisphere"
Defending it from what? Who is it that threatens the USA or the Western Hemisphere? We need to stop wasting our money on military *****. The fact that we have 800 military bases around the world is criminal. - specialK16, on 04/27/2008, -0/+3It is
"What" not "that", since it is a question.. So it is "What "threat" makes latinoamerica respond with this type of action?" - IEatHamburgers, on 04/27/2008, -2/+5I think we threw that out the window when we helped the Brits take back the Falklands in any case.
