- mu0p, on 12/14/2007, -6/+18I suggest you visit the sentencingproject.org for information about widespread sentencing irregularities for blacks and latinos.
- dinostabOMG, on 12/14/2007, -1/+9Self-evidently?
- mOdQuArK, on 12/14/2007, -0/+8I thought it was a standing joke that almost everybody in prison says they DIDN'T do it (unless they're takling to a parole board & trying to get out on good behavior and being remorseful).
- RyanCoke, on 12/14/2007, -2/+8I know that you're tired of hearing it; but I thought that a difference between Iran and the U.S. was that people could complain about their government. I think hearing someone disagree with any opinion is fairly indicative of their love of freedom and their rights. Don't confuse people voicing their opinions as negative to the culture. That's what the U.S. is based on. I don't think that they need move to Iran.
- RHandler, on 12/14/2007, -1/+6Am I the only one who was disappointed that it only mentioned in passing the fact that felons in this country are disenfranchised basically for life?
- EarlOfLade, on 12/14/2007, -2/+7So... Why the ***** are you reading and commenting in threads related to the topic then? Nobody is waterboarding you into reading and commenting, you moron!
- GalacticXenu, on 12/14/2007, -1/+5The reason more minorities are in jail is, generally, not because of discrimination, but because of a socio-economic gap. Blacks are more likely to be poor, and yes, there IS a gang culture amongst many black youth, especially in inner-cities, which is a real problem. Deny it if you want, digg me down, but even blacks such as Bill Cosby (oh wait, is he an Uncle Tom now?) have commented on this, and many times black youths are pressured by their peers NOT to do well in education because it's giving in "to the man", etc etc.
Latinos typically come from immigrant families which are obviously typically poorer; poorer people are typically more likely to steal and commit other blue-collar crimes. - inactive, on 12/14/2007, -1/+5There's people who criticize this nation and it's leaders. Then, there ware those who have an axe to grind, who'll never be happy, no matter who is president. I find them so irritating.
- stanleyford, on 12/14/2007, -1/+5There are a number of possible reasons for why minorities are over-represented in prisons:
1. The justice system discriminates against minorities, either because laws are unfairly applied against minorities, because laws unfairly target minorities, or some combination of the two.
2. Minorities commit crimes in disproportionate frequency. This may occur for a variety of reasons, some of which may be: minorities tend to have less money and have a higher incentive to commit crime; minorities may tend to live in urban areas where crime occurs more often; etc..
Without further information, I don't think you can draw a conclusion as to _why_ minorities are over-represented in prisons. Saying that it must be because of racism says more about the person drawing the conclusion than anything else. - williamdyer, on 12/14/2007, -4/+8Then go drag the chimp off his perch and do something about it.
- inactive, on 12/14/2007, -4/+7...and...
- buckrogers1965, on 12/14/2007, -1/+4This is actually very scary, because they could basically just pass laws outlawing certain racial groups, and those groups would lose their vote because they were felons.
- inactive, on 12/14/2007, -0/+39/11 was an inside job? Do you have any reputable evidence for that wacko statement?
- inactive, on 12/14/2007, -5/+8Remember - this is DIGG - many articles are posted here by illiterate and uneducated politically polarized individuals with absolutely no life experience or critical thinking abilites. This article has clearly taken facts out of context and represented them falsley.
- Schneckehaus, on 12/14/2007, -1/+4Aryan
- Wargalas, on 12/14/2007, -8/+10I suggest you visit a prison and ask people if they did it or not. Chances are, they'll admit they did.
- markgl, on 12/14/2007, -5/+7Blacks and Latino/as constitute over 60 percent of the incarcerated, while only making up a quarter of the general population.
so weak, most of the crime commited is probably from blacks and latinos that is why they're in jail. i could go into a massive explaination as to why, but then i'd probably not be stating facts, maybe i'm wrong in saying the blacks and latins commit themost crime, but you go to an inner city, i really don't see a bunch of white gangs, they're black or brown. - yodaj007, on 12/14/2007, -1/+3Stop griping about it. I see stuff I'm not interested in. Know what I do? I relax and skip over it. I like these articles. Other people do too. People are Digging it. Ruining Digg? I'll say it again. People are Digging it. Don't like that? Move to another community. This is how things work around here. Deal with it.
- SwedishNinja, on 12/14/2007, -7/+9True. This racism is CENTURIES deep, but never mind because it's cool and easy to blame Bush for everything. If you want REAL civil rights abuses, take a look at sub-saharan Africa or Russia. Oh, but that's right, GEORGE BUSH HATES BLACK PEOPLE is a MUCH more crotch-grabbingly better title.
- Stevanoski, on 12/17/2007, -0/+2Have the Neo-Libs ever met a Dictator they didn't love?
- inactive, on 12/14/2007, -7/+9AndrewMB said "....I'm getting tired of "Bush Administration this" and "Bush Administration that...."
Me too. My answer to those critics blaming Bush for everything including the world's hang nails; "If you don't like here, move to Iran where they really care about your personal opinions, and where President Aquavalvetman will take a personal interest in your criticisms of him and his administration. - yodaj007, on 12/14/2007, -0/+2No, he's with Elvis and the aliens. I saw them at a 7/11.
- Stevanoski, on 12/16/2007, -0/+2The Clintons stole more rights than they stole furniture when they left. Class act, the Democrats are.
- airburst, on 12/14/2007, -0/+2Hey news junkie, Ken Lay has been dead for over a year now.
- inactive, on 12/14/2007, -4/+6No it didnt start with Bush, but the Patriot Act, lies about WMDs for war, suspension of Habeus Corpus and domestic spying are pretty big on the list of ***** he has dished out, or directly hand a hand in.
- EarlOfLade, on 12/14/2007, -4/+6USA has been known outside USA for decades to be a heavy human rights violator. It's not new and it's not a surprise.
It makes me sick to my stomach listening to all politicians talking about human rights violations around the world while they blatantly ignore their own country. - ditto2, on 12/14/2007, -4/+6Stop ruining Digg. I specifically turned off the "political news" and political opinion sections so I wouldn't have to see this garbage. This doesn't belong in world news, it's not news, and just because you believe it doesn't make it news. Leave those of us whom could care less what you think alone to read our articles and entertainment in peace.
- inactive, on 12/14/2007, -1/+2I was glad to see that the title said "commits" and not "communists".
- inactive, on 12/14/2007, -1/+2Human Rights Network? Who the hell are they? Oh, that's right, just some liberal miscellaneous organization.
Who cares what they think? I should be allowed to discriminate against anyone I please. - GalacticXenu, on 12/14/2007, -1/+2What if the felony is some ***** offense where no one was hurt? Guess that's your fault for stepping out of line, eh?
- EarlOfLade, on 12/14/2007, -4/+5I can't think of anything more un-American than your comment!
- inactive, on 12/14/2007, -2/+3Because the people using cocaine are not destroying their communities like the people smoking crack.
- crazywarthog, on 12/14/2007, -5/+5Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz ...
- ReinMasamuri, on 12/14/2007, -3/+3Not really. Their are constitutional laws that prevent this.
And besides that, were felons allowed to vote they'd all vote in people who would be very lenient on felons. If you want to vote, don't commit a felony. If you didn't commit a felony, get a good lawyer. If you can't afford a good lawyer, one will be appointed for you. - pintomp3, on 12/14/2007, -2/+2why does crack carry a heavier sentence than cocaine?
- lolo2007, on 02/06/2008, -0/+0USA has been known outside USA for decades to be a heavy human rights violator. It's not new and it's not a surprise.

- Tangeuray, on 12/14/2007, -1/+1Our justice system is so ***** that unless you can hire a "Good" lawyer your gonna gent bent over because the "County" or "State" gets so much federal money to keep you incarcerated. Once the federal money is gone I think there will be alot more "Justice" in the courts.Furthermore Im sick of White-collar crimes going Unpunished....BTW I think Ken Lay is laughing his ass off on some tropical Island atm....

- buckrogers1965, on 12/14/2007, -4/+3The justice department under Bush has dropped all pretense and the only racial complaints they are investigating are those involving discrimination against white people in unfair job practices because black people were promoted before them. *blinks* Because that happens so much. *blinks* Ummm, yeaaaaah.

When any of our civil rights are taken away, they are taken away from all of us. - Shigatsu, on 12/14/2007, -6/+5http://digg.com/2008_us_elections/Bush_Sr_address_ ...
- inactive, on 12/14/2007, -2/+1"The United States is the Worlds worst violator of human rights." Have any proof for that statement?
"2,655,000 innocent men, women and children have had their lives ended by the US military. 22 million in the last 50 years." Does that add up mathematically to you??
"Latinos and African Americans are treated as captives and forced into menial labor for minimal if any remuneration." America is the land of opportunity not the land of equal results. We have blacks and Latinos at the highest levels of corporate, academic and government institutions. Most blacks and Latinos do not excel that high and neither do whites.
"Time and again it has been documented where African Americans and Latinos are attacked, pulled over and brutally beat and tasered for no reason other than they are of the “Wrong Color”. Where is that documentation? Have any whites been targeted by black and Latino police officers?
"The Revolution is coming and coming quickly." Your REVOLUTION is a joke because free thinking, intelligent and educated individuals become revolutionary leaders. Not Racist , illiterate, mentally ill individuals like yourself. - minox, on 12/14/2007, -6/+5The group's conclusions aren't very surprising since they were founded in 2003.
- Tangeuray, on 12/14/2007, -3/+2IMJGalt is a freaking Toolbag.....
- empirefalling, on 12/14/2007, -5/+3The United States is the Worlds worst violator of human rights. The US extends those violations into other countries that it has occupied. 2,655,000 innocent men, women and children have had their lives ended by the US military. 22 million in the last 50 years. Latinos and African Americans are treated as captives and forced into menial labor for minimal if any remuneration. Latinos and African Americans fear the jack booted White Cop. Time and again it has been documented where African Americans and Latinos are attacked, pulled over and brutally beat and tasered for no reason other than they are of the “Wrong Color”. The children of these peoples are forgotten by the White Elites. Left to poverty, disease and indescribable tortures at the hands of the American Police, they turn inward and struggle to understand why America hates them. Latino and African Americans are beginning to resist the White Elite Racists and Bigoted US Political doctrine condemning them forever to this way of life. As US prisons fill with Latino and African American Political Detainees, a revolution is beginning to take shape. A revolution where the term “all men are created equal” becomes reality. A reality where the color of the skin is ignored. A reality where all men and women are equal in terms of economics. A reality where all men and women are equal in healthcare, education and housing. The Revolution is coming and coming quickly.
- FunkyNuts, on 12/14/2007, -4/+2That "chimp" got himself elected to the highest office in the nation and you didn't. So, how's that banana, Koko?
- inactive, on 12/14/2007, -5/+2Thanks I just buried it.
- inactive, on 12/14/2007, -9/+6I agree with everything but the fact that blacks and latinos make 60% of the prison population (this is the lowest number I heard of) has absolutely nothing to do with discrimination. It's in no way a human rights violation. Unless someone can demonstrate that whites make other races commit crimes? No?
If you're going to make the poverty argument, there are more poor white Americans than poor people of all different ethnicities combined. So that doesn't work.
And in any case, whites are only responsible for 15% of interracial crimes in America. Blacks are 39 times more likely to commit a violent crime against a white person than vice-versa.
