- inactive, on 05/07/2009, -7/+101I can't believe we've become ***** Nazis. Thanks a lot, War On Terror.
- wrmjr, on 05/06/2009, -6/+81This is a sickening but important article to read. The way some of these people were treated--not only while being tortured, but after their deaths--is horrific.
- JoeParanoid, on 05/06/2009, -5/+69So much for those Jiffymoms who believe torture doesn't really hurt anyone.
- sspeed, on 05/06/2009, -4/+62My only questions is, does the buck stop with Cheney or Bush?
- ThomasDyer, on 05/07/2009, -3/+40The War on Terror is a result, not a cause, of Nazi practices, most notably under the Bush administration. Take a look at the parallels between US and Nazi Homeland Security legislation.
- awasson, on 05/07/2009, -4/+39And how do you conclude that these guys were involved?
Oh I forgot, you tortured a confession out of them.
By the way, the dark ages called, they want their witch hunting, burning at the stake, confessions through torture and guilty by drowning tactics back. - phosphite, on 05/07/2009, -3/+28You've become what you sought to avoid, your "enemy" has won. Game over! You lose your economy as a penalty!
- inactive, on 05/07/2009, -12/+36So why are we continuing with the Bagram Air Force Base prison and torture facility?
Why are we continuing with the occupation of the Mideast and the war on Islam?
Why has a nation that was dedicated to freedom and individual rights morphed into an empire of brutality. Quit apologizing for Obama and demand the end to all foreign wars and all occupations!
We have become a nation of murderers and torturers. The blood is on all of our hands. - pixel34, on 05/07/2009, -0/+23I think the main problem is that the people that get tortured are "them" and the people that are saved by the torture is "us."
It's amazing how many people see themselves as potential victims and not as potential defendants. No one ever sees themselves as being on the wrong side of the law. I wonder how many of these people were innocent. - catxors, on 05/07/2009, -3/+25So if the US Army came in and shot your mom for no reason, it's all cool because that's what weapons are for?
- jhandfield, on 05/07/2009, -4/+21Not saying it didn't happen, but you're telling me I should believe without question a report underwritten by an organization who benefits if these findings end up being correct? Granted, it's doubtful you're going to find much of anyone willing to fund something like this who's good and truly impartial, but even so. Points lost to MiaCulpa for the pretty limp-wristed title, as others have pointed out above.
- ArCorbin, on 05/07/2009, -2/+18People in Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. Neither did innocent Afghanis who are mistakenly tortured to death.
- sulthernao, on 05/07/2009, -3/+19They aren't terrorist unless they are convicted. So basically a few INNOCENT people died (even if they were in actuality terrorists).
- mickstephenson, on 05/07/2009, -11/+25Said the average 1940's german civilian
- masamunecyrus, on 05/07/2009, -0/+14I have to wonder if, even if justice (ANY form of justice would be nice at this point) doesn't happen to anyone involved here in the US, if in other countries' history books years form now they will write about US torture, the politics of it, and how the international community failed to do anything about it?
Or will it simply go unnoticed or forgotten like authorities here in the US are trying so hard to make it do? - ArCorbin, on 05/07/2009, -0/+13It's getting harder and harder for conservatives to defend these actions as more information comes out. Harsh interrogations, then torture, now murder? We're about at the point where your political beliefs shouldn't have anything to do with prosecuting these crimes.
- T8erT0T, on 05/07/2009, -3/+16The buck stops nowhere. The Justice Department isn't doing *****. Thanks for playing.
- Gareth321, on 05/07/2009, -0/+13If Cheney goes, he's taking Bush with him. Hell, if either of them go, they're taking half of congress with them. That's why everyone's so interested in "moving forward".
- awasson, on 05/07/2009, -1/+14Think of what would have happened if Bush actually went after Bin Laden instead of loosing interest and going after Iraq which wasn't involved in 911. His presidency would have been a major success and the US would have been rich and popular.
- TheUndertoker, on 05/07/2009, -1/+13Quit acting like Nazis and we'll stop calling you guys that.
- mikelieman, on 05/07/2009, -2/+14"The ends justify the means", Comrade?
News Flash, Torture Apologists: REAL AMERICANS PROSECUTE TORTURERS.
If you don't like it -- leave. I hear Saudi Arabia approves of your techniques. - 8FoldPath, on 05/07/2009, -2/+13"I think about torturing people all the time and i find that it's not really a big deal."
Seek help. - fugazied, on 05/07/2009, -1/+12100'000 Iraqis dead and counting. Men, women, children, it doesn't matter. Thousands of people in detention and tortured. Over 1 million Iraqis left the country, and probably won't return. Got your pound of flesh yet you *****?
- mixomatosys, on 05/07/2009, -5/+16may have?
- iliveincoto, on 05/07/2009, -3/+14@Shwaavay - So being an American gives you the right to play God and decide who does and doesn't get to live? Nice.
You can't justify murder by giving it a title. - G001, on 05/07/2009, -2/+13I'll paste this link over and over again if I have to. The Pentagon has already admitted to deaths, and classifies some as murders:
http://news.scotsman.com/iraq/Pentagon-admits-to-3 ...
This is an article from 2004 found after 15 seconds of Googling. What more proof do you want? The picture of a dead guy in a bag of ice wasn't enough for you? - awasson, on 05/07/2009, -9/+19These people (if they can be called that) have done the unthinkable. This is unprecidented (by the good guys)... Especially in this day and age of knowledge, enlightrenment and the so called spreading of democracy. This disgusts me as it should everyone.
In past wars where one side has been found guilty of torture, generally it is the "bad people" (ie: not US or Allies) who do the torture. After past wars they have been rounded up and executed after war crimes trials. Do these people think they are the exception? Torture and murder, particularily as well planned and executed can never be justified.
I wonder how that prick Hannity will spin this? - awasson, on 05/07/2009, -4/+14It's not a matter of a few terrorists dying... It's a matter of them being tortured to death by the "good guys". Good guys don't do that kind of thing... Terrorists do that kind of thing. Furthermore some of the ones who died were not terrorists.... They were actually allied with the US in the fight against terror.
Oh and one more thing.... Most of the rest of the world has known for quite some time but the news is just getting to you guys.
That's the big deal. - fugazied, on 05/07/2009, -1/+11What kind of moron smiles with a thumbs up next to a dead body.
- pixel34, on 05/07/2009, -2/+12Do I believe that [abuse] may have hurt us in winning the hearts and minds of Muslims around the world? Yes, and I do regret that. But one of the ways we address that is to show the world that we don’t just talk about Geneva, we enforce Geneva . . . . [T]hat’s why you have these military court-martials; that’s why you have these administrative penalties imposed upon those responsible because we want to find out what happened so it doesn’t happen again. And if someone has done something wrong, they’re going to be held accountable.
—U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales
Confirmation Hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee
January 6, 2005 - jase08, on 05/07/2009, -2/+11People need to realize America is not the "good guy". There are definitely good people in America with upstanding morals and principles but as a nation, America has often acted atrociously towards foreign nations. The media, however, does a fantastic job of covering this behind a facade of "democracy" and "freedom".
- G001, on 05/07/2009, -2/+11They're not all foreign hostiles:
"...but many are innocent civilians caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, say members of a California National Guard military police unit that recently returned to the Bay Area after five months at the prison."
http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4176/is_20 ...
Even if you put aside whether we should be torturing or killing people in custody, it's kind of important that we make sure the people we have actually deserve to be there, no? - G001, on 05/07/2009, -2/+11Here you go. Even Fox News covered it:
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,120608,00.html
"The Pentagon has begun criminal investigations of at least 37 deaths involving detainees held by U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, officials said Friday. ... Eight pending cases have been classified as homicides involving suspected assaults of detainees before or during interrogation sessions"
You can also see an original DOD document obtained via FOIA, but I figured you wouldn't trust the ACLU.
http://action.aclu.org/torturefoia/released/102405 ... - inactive, on 05/07/2009, -5/+14a real source would be nice. Some actual proof would be nice.
- FishThePirate, on 05/07/2009, -9/+18Doesn't matter, your new president is only interested in "looking forward" (which presumably means he has to crane his head way to the side in order to look around the last administration's gigantic, looming human rights violations).
Don't worry though, he wants to bring "Change" and "Hope". And if you're not convinced, he has some pretty campaign signs and vague, soaring rhetoric he can show you. - mikelieman, on 05/07/2009, -2/+11Nazi is as Nazi does...
It'd be a lot easier to be proud of America if the FBI picked up some of these 'contractors' who tortured prisoners, and interrogated them the good ol' FBI way -- cutting them a deal if they rat out the guys who gave them the orders...
Then the FBI can grab them and ask them some questions...
Lather, Rinse, Repeat... **EVENTUALLY** you'll get to someone who will take the rap and won't rat on his boss in the Oval Office... During Reagan it was "Ali" North... I wonder who it'd be this time...
IF the FBI and DOJ took their thumbs out of their asses and did their sworn-*****-duty that is... - inactive, on 05/07/2009, -3/+11And we know these people are terrorists how? They weren't even convicted, or even tried for that matter. Go play with your GI Joes while the big kids take care of the important issues.
- winterspan, on 05/07/2009, -7/+15EVERYONE should go read about the fact that there is an incredibly detailed and incriminating classified report that was written up by the official INSPECTOR GENERAL put in charge of investigating allegations of abuse by the United States. During his investigation, Cheney met with him on four separate occasions and finally even got the investigation stopped. The final report was made after the investigation was shut-down and remains classified in the Pentagon! IT NEEDS TO BE RELEASED!
OBAMA CANNOT LET THIS SLIDE! IT IS A DUTY TO THE COUNTRY TO INVESTIGATES IT'S OWN MISTAKES IN THE INTEREST OF PRESERVING COUNTRY'S FUTURE! - G001, on 05/07/2009, -0/+8It's an unnecessarily hedged title. The Pentagon has already admitted to dozens of people dying in custody, and classifies eight instances as murders. There's no need for "may have":
http://news.scotsman.com/iraq/Pentagon-admits-to-3 ...
That's a story from 2004, so who knows what the total is now. It's also the numbers they'll publicly admit to, so there's a good chance it's on the low side. It's time to believe it. - ecualung, on 05/07/2009, -3/+11Except when you stop and consider that the US was detaining people based on what kind of wristwatch they were wearing.
- charlietuna, on 05/07/2009, -0/+7Raw Story... which to me implies they rush to press in order to get an early headline. If it were Seymour Hersh, I'd be paying more attention.
- record200, on 05/07/2009, -0/+7Cheney , Bush, lol
Pentagon is still the same, run by the same murderous people.
R.Gates is still in office.
The show goes on. - ghostofreddit, on 05/07/2009, -4/+11Not all Americans are terrorists. Many of them hate the kidnapping, torture and murder they are paying for with their tax dollars.
When the USA ends up facing justice by other countries attacked by the USA, I hope they remember that America does have some innocent people who did nothing wrong. - G001, on 05/07/2009, -2/+9Sigh. Credibility:
"At least 37 prisoners have died while in the hands of the United States in Iraq and Afghanistan, Pentagon officials have admitted. Eight of the deaths are classified as murder involving suspected assaults on detainees before or during interrogation sessions."
http://news.scotsman.com/iraq/Pentagon-admits-to-3 ...
Also, there's a difference between killing someone on the battlefield when they're attacking you and killing them while they're in custody and thus no longer a threat. - ghostofreddit, on 05/07/2009, -2/+9Are you ***** kidding me? Every country on the ***** planet has had people taken by the USA.
Perhaps you should stop watching your own "god loves america" propaganda ***** and open your ***** eyes. - awasson, on 05/07/2009, -1/+7Thank you... That is my point.
- ItsTwentyBelow, on 05/07/2009, -1/+7...and this guy's name is Fuhrers...really?
- PeterODactyl, on 05/07/2009, -7/+13Repost:
"Mr. Habibullah's autopsy, completed on Dec. 8, showed bruises or abrasions on his chest, arms and head. There were deep contusions on his calves, knees and thighs. His left calf was marked by what appeared to have been the sole of a boot.
His death was attributed to a blood clot, probably caused by the severe injuries to his legs, which traveled to his heart and blocked the blood flow to his lungs."

Nope, doesn't sound like torture to me.
