- badqat, on 01/13/2009, -8/+56Did he end his worthless and ineffective plea with a "pretty please with sugar on top"?
- Blinker1315, on 01/13/2009, -8/+43Oh, okay. If the U.N. "implores" a country to stop doing something, rest assured that directive will be followed. The U.N.'s a joke. Its headquarters ought to moved out of New York and let a Wal-Mart go there instead. It'd be more effective.
- Shabrainiac, on 01/13/2009, -6/+28Should have spoke up earlier while Israel was being pummeled by indiscriminate rocket fire during the last 8 years.

And I want a million dollars . . . We'll both be waiting a while unless we both get off our asses. - poidh, on 01/13/2009, -2/+19Anyone who wants a ceasefire just wants Hamas to re-arm, re-group and re-train, as they always do during a a truce. A truce is called a hudna in Arabic. Look up that word to see what it has referred to historically.
- inactive, on 01/13/2009, -5/+21A question to those that are burying me: Have you ever actually read Hamas' charter? Why not participate in an intelligent debate before you bury someone for saying something that is true. Whichever side you take, Hamas charter actually says things that, if Hamas were Christian instead of Muslim, Digg would slam them for saying. But since I'll be buried for having the audacity to paste their ACTUAL CHARTER, so be it.
Hamas Charter:
"Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it." (The Martyr, Imam Hassan al-Banna, of blessed memory).
"The Islamic Resistance Movement believes that the land of Palestine is an Islamic Waqf consecrated for future Muslim generations until Judgement Day. It, or any part of it, should not be squandered: it, or any part of it, should not be given up. "
"There is no solution for the Palestinian question except through Jihad. Initiatives, proposals and international conferences are all a waste of time and vain endeavors."
"After Palestine, the Zionists aspire to expand from the Nile to the Euphrates. When they will have digested the region they overtook, they will aspire to further expansion, and so on. Their plan is embodied in the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion", and their present conduct is the best proof of what we are saying."
Don't bother trying to defend that, you can't. Just click the little red bury button to pretend they didn't write that, and go back to blaming everything on the Jews. I swear, Digg.com is starting to look like MelGibson.com. - btschul, on 01/13/2009, -1/+14In whiny voice: "You guyyyyyyyyyyys! Stop it! I really mean it! Come on, guys!"
/UN Chief - hadees, on 01/13/2009, -0/+13Or how about he travel to the Congo where there is supposed to be a UN peace keeping force stopping the violence but in the last 4 months 500 people have been killed and 100,000 displaced. Starting on xmas day there was a rampage that has killed at least 271 civilians.

I'm tired of all this "Ohh, Israel and the US is the ***** devil" I was particularly pissed about a comment that said "Dance Zionist puppet, dance!" or some ***** like that.
Be in the ***** middle, and stop this "omg Zionist!" *****. Both sides are making terrible mistakes, but guess whose fault is it?
PROTIP: The guys that are constantly treating to wipe a country. - TheSwashbuckler, on 01/13/2009, -4/+15Are you daft?
Self-defense does not mean only inflicting the same numbers of casualties on your enemy as your enemy has to you. Self-defense is about preventing future casualties and future violence. - SteelChicken, on 01/13/2009, -14/+25no actually, it hasn't because apparently they haven't learned their lesson. stop attacking israel, and you will stop getting your asses kicked.
- mdepaul, on 01/13/2009, -3/+14The truth is Israel doesn't really care how many Palestinians they kill if they can save a single one of their own people.
Hamas doesn't care how many of their own people are killed as long as they kill one Israeli.
No wonder the ***** has hit the fan. - martalli, on 01/13/2009, -6/+16The UN is not a world government. It is a talking shop for all the countries of the world. It can also be a forum for new treaties, such as the Law of the Sea or the Kyoto Protocol. The UN has not standing army of its own, and none is intended. The Secretary General can call for certain actions or policies, but all the SG has is a bully pulpit. If you are calling the UN ineffective, then you are either insipid or uninformed. Talking shops can be very important in defusing conflicts, but they are ahrdly a universal answer to problems. That is clear in conflicts such as the one in Gaza demonstrates.
- lamjester313, on 01/13/2009, -2/+121930's Germany? Besides for the fact that that era is pre-Holocaust and WWII, i have no clue what you're talking about. The Jewish population in Germany never revolted or terrorized the German public. They were murdered, 6 million of them.
- TheUngod, on 01/13/2009, -2/+12I'm a Jew and I'd be happy to see the conflict halt
- AlaskaLoneWolf, on 01/13/2009, -5/+15Soooooo now the UN gets involved? Kinda' like calling 9-1-1 and waiting for an hour or three for anyone to show up. I really don't understand the concept of even paying the upkeep for their building anymore.
- wpi97, on 01/13/2009, -0/+10That's how Texas became a state...

I wonder why Hamas won't listen to his pleas? It's not like their charter actually says this: "There is no solution for the Palestinian question except through Jihad. Initiatives, proposals and international conferences are all a waste of time and vain endeavors." - mohsenxp, on 01/13/2009, -2/+11It must suck to be the UN Chief.
"So what do you do?"
"Well I'm the head of the United Nations..."
"Wow, people must take you seriously?"
"Nope. It's the UN. We say what the people want to hear. It makes us look good. But no one listens. It sucks!" - hadees, on 01/13/2009, -0/+9@shayben, actually legal Jewish immigration into Palestine started when the land was still under the control of the Ottoman empire and continued pre-WII. After WII there was a lot of Jewish refugees from the war trying to find a home which is one of the main reasons Israel accepted the original UN partition. They didn't have time to fight for land when there were so many Jews who were sleeping on the streets in Europe.
- wpi97, on 01/13/2009, -0/+9@hadees
And yet for some reason, there are no rockets flying from Mexico into Texas... Interesting how that is... - Tynan, on 01/13/2009, -0/+9Invade land? They left Gaza in 2005. Rocket fire only increased since then.
- inactive, on 01/13/2009, -8/+17What the hell does that even mean? Hey Jews in Germany in the 30's "Stop attacking Israel and you'll stop getting your asses kicked."
Well, I think they learned their lesson.
I know your highly elevated sense of irony tells you that it would be dramatically interesting if there were strong parallels between 1930s Germany and present day Israel, but only a ***** retard with absolutely no knowledge of history would make that mistake. But please, tell me all about the Jewish paramilitary groups launching year after year of terrorist attacks on the German state, supported by the Jewish population, who used Jewish civilians as shields, which prompted Hitler to offer them half of Berlin in a peace accord before finally marching his troops in to put an end to their terrorist attacks, even if it came at a high cost.
I must have missed that day in History class. - affiliatebroker, on 01/13/2009, -1/+10UN chief wants Gaza conflict halt: Somehow, I have the feeling he is not alone...
- 3nder99, on 01/13/2009, -1/+10Where do you think the Red Cross got them?
- wpi97, on 01/13/2009, -0/+8@shayben
Correction, Jews lived in modern-day Israel continuously for the past 3000 years. Significant Jewish immigration from Europe began at the end of the 19th century, long before WWII. Not to mention that about half of Israeli Jews today are either themselves refugees from Arab countries or their descendants. - inactive, on 01/13/2009, -3/+11DUGG!
- pointlessbanter, on 01/13/2009, -1/+9Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005. It's the Palestinians land to do with as they please. Yet, they choose to fire rockets into Israel and they choose to wrap bombs to their chests and walk into Israeli markets and schools. If they chose instead to peacefully negotiate for a two state solution, then Israel wouldn't need to build walls and close borders to protect itself.
Every Digger also seems to ignore the fact that Gaza shares a border with Egypt. Why do their Arab brothers in Egypt keep their border closed? Because Hamas are irrational extremists and their ideals are not wanted in Egypt either.
I'm not saying anyone deserves to die, but these people bring their problems upon themselves. - wpi97, on 01/13/2009, -0/+8What are the less destructive options? Do you think that Israel has the star ship Enterprise in orbit with phasers and scanners, that can simply pinpoint locations of Hamas operatives and vaporize them one at a time without causing any other damage?
A precision bomb means it can hit within meters of the intended target, rather than within hundreds of meters. It can still take out a whole building or even a city block when it explodes. - hadees, on 01/13/2009, -0/+8@warriorscot, that is the inherent problem with every UN force. UNIFIL isn't even doing what it is supposed to do, Hezbollah has been rearming in the area it isn't supposed to and rockets were fired from Southern Lebanon. Same goes with the UN peace keepers in Rwanda who let the genocide happen there. I'm not blaming the specific people in those peace keeping forces persay but rather the UN as a whole for being largely ineffectual especially when it comes to peace keeping. This is one of the main reasons why Israel won't accept a UN force inside Gaza or the West Bank. You can't count on UN forces to do anything.
- kingmanic, on 01/13/2009, -1/+8Wow. Your post is so absurd it must be satire? Sadly I think it was serious. . .
- hadees, on 01/13/2009, -0/+7@wpi97, actually a bunch of Americans moved there legally first, bought land and build lives for themselves, then later fought for Independence. So it is even a better analogy!
- shayben, on 01/13/2009, -2/+9@mohsenxp
How exactly was this land invaded? Jewish people started settling in Israel after WWII in approval of the British government that ruled this area. It was emancipated in 48' and given to Israeli Jews, and was expanded in acts of defense when additional territories were conquered in wars. All perfectly legitimate.
The way these people resist is not legitimate. - wpi97, on 01/13/2009, -1/+8"Look at the UN that basically gets table scraps donated by militaries of the world"
How about the oil rich countries of the Middle East contribute to this worthy cause?
"and has to follow every single rule in the book"
You have just described how the Israeli army has to operate. - richmomz, on 01/13/2009, -21/+28According to this article 292 children have been killed in the last two weeks. This in response to rocket attacks which have only killed 19 people in the last seven YEARS. Israel's "right to self defense" argument has pretty much lost all credibility at this point.
- inactive, on 01/13/2009, -28/+35Last week the ICRC accused Israel of failing to fulfil its duty to help wounded civilians in Gaza, and said it was a "full-blown humanitarian crisis".
The UN secretary general, Ban Ki-moon, is due in the region on Wednesday to push for a truce.
Mr Ban said too many people had died and there had been too much civilian suffering.
"My message is simple, direct and to the point: the fighting must stop," Mr Ban told a news conference in New York ahead of his departure on Tuesday for the Middle East.
"In Gaza, the very foundation of society is being destroyed: people's homes, civic infrastructure, public health facilities and schools."

Oh and when you read "Gaza Ministry" that means Hamas. Hamas is the duly elected Government of Gaza. Amazing, a terrorist group is their government eh? - TheSwashbuckler, on 01/13/2009, -3/+10"Peace negotiations are a sham."
Yes, they are. Hamas' goal is the destruction of Israel, as the Hamas charter starts "Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it."
How can Israel negotiate peace with an organization whose sole goal is Israel's destruction? - wpi97, on 01/14/2009, -0/+7"let's clear out Israel to make way for the Palestinians and all will be okay.. sarcasm sarcasm.. give me a break!"
This is exactly what many diggers would like to see. You see, ethnic cleansing is perfectly fine, when applied to Jews. \sarcasm - cmto3, on 01/14/2009, -0/+7That's what it seems.. everybody is screaming about how it's disproportional.. gee what's the proportion of over 8,000 rockets into israel over the last 7 years to what's going on now?? or let's add in all the suicide bombs. etc etc etc
- hawkspur, on 01/13/2009, -0/+6"Get a brain *****."
"Your as lame as lame can be."
Ironyyyy. - Tynan, on 01/13/2009, -0/+6You're wrong, hamobu. I know this for the simple reason that if Israel wanted to ethnically cleanse Palestinians, there would be very few Palestinians left. It's not like they don't have the weapons to kill many thousands every day. Today, the death toll is around 75/daily.
The only thing that stops Israel is human decency. The only thing that stops Hamas is that they're incompetent. - gopher043, on 01/13/2009, -1/+7eh if my Bible knowledge is good Israel didn't exist when Sodom and Gomorah were destroyed. Also Abraham's nephew Lot and his two daughters were the only ones to survive, thanks to the guidance of angels. I don't see how they were cursed.
So I don't see how God could have cursed Israel since Abraham was the forefather of the nation and it didn't EXIST at that time. - cmto3, on 01/14/2009, -0/+6Oh, so the Israelis should just deal with the rockets and live with the fear that they could get killed with it someday????
Let's see how you would do having rockets shot at you day after day after day.. It won't stop even if they move.. Oh I know.. let's clear out Israel to make way for the Palestinians and all will be okay.. sarcasm sarcasm.. give me a break! They are perfectly capable , especially since they are all an army and are getting weapons supplied to them from Iran or China.. - 3nder99, on 01/13/2009, -7/+13The UN is ineffective because it attempts to act as the legitimate authority but never does anything. It harangues Israel non stop while sitting in Gaza allowing Hamas to use them as human shields along with using UN resources to stage attacks. Wanna know why the UN soldiers there allow this? Not because they like it, but because they aren't allowed to do anything. UN Hospitals shelter Hamas leaders, UN ambulances are used to ferry Hamas terrorists (Theres video of it btw), and the UN is used to allow a "bully pulpit" for the terrorists. The UN loves sanctioning Israel, but funny enough it doesn't give a ***** how many suicide bombers and rockets are sent from Gaza. It doesn't give a ***** how the Egyptians treat the Gazans on their border. (Hamas probably wasn't the best choice for a government because they are aligned with the Muslim Brotherhood, an Egyptian Terrorist Group. No open borders for Gaza...)
Go learn about Rwanda if you want a more glaring example. The UN is a ***** joke, they basically send soldiers into the middle of a warzone and don't allow them to do anything. Except be used as human shields.
We have ambassadors that can do much more without the oversight of a corrupt UN. I mean that is why we have ambassadors. The UN was a good idea, but filling an attempt at a Democratic World Union with a majority of representatives from non Democratic countries just gives dictators a chance to block actions on themselves. Go look at the UN Human Rights Council if you want to learn about the joke that is the UN.
Let's not even start in on the total waste of resources that go into UN Charity programs. Give that money to a well run non profit charity and you would see the value of that aid double.
In fact the only thing I have seen the UN do well is corruption. Go ask Kofi and his son how they made out in the Oil for Food Scam. - wpi97, on 01/13/2009, -0/+6During this "publicity stunt" 8,000 Israelis were thrown out of their homes. The response to this "publicity stunt" was a wave of rocket fire directed at Israeli towns from Gaza.
- TheAdvent, on 01/13/2009, -3/+9Hell, I'd rather the US just get out of the UN all together, along with its funding.
