God doesn't go around pretending to be Bono. - ICSU, on 10/11/2007, -9/+50Much lower fertility rate is the only thing that can help Africa.
The church is campaigning against birth controll in Africa and should be stopped. - fordicus, on 10/11/2007, -25/+65Note to bono: you are a musician not a world leader.
- nixonrichard, on 10/11/2007, -8/+35"Also, we can thank Bush for cutting the funds the US spent in Africa to hand out condoms and instruct people about their importance."
I love blaming Bush as much as the next guy, but we have Bush to thank for an additional 1 billion dollars to fighting Malaria in Africa. Everyone knows Malaria is a bigger problem to Africa than AIDS, and the WHO agrees that money for Africa is better spent on Malaria research than AIDS research. People like Bono point out AIDS because it is fatal (and also affects rich white men), but the biggest health and economic disaster facing Africa is Malaria.
I really don't mind money being cut back for AIDS research if more money is going to more important research. - bmartin, on 10/11/2007, -10/+35I'd rather see more funding for cancer. If you look at the major sources of HIV, contracting AIDS is much more related to behavior than cancer is. Many more people die per year from cancer than AIDS. Rather than correct the problem through expensive drug cocktails, why don't we focus on stopping the problem before it spreads?
You don't get cancer from having sex with a cancer-infected person. You don't get cancer from a blood transfusion. You don't get cancer because your mother had cancer when you were born. I'm all for personal privacy, but when it comes to a matter of affecting the lift and death of many other people, the world as a whole needs to recognize that AIDS is preventable. Screening should be mandatory; it needs to be a part of our medical records. The information can be private yet readily available for those concerned. I'm all for "feeding the poor", but I'd rather give them the knowledge and resources to start farming than to continually dump funding into the problem. - HerrEisenheim, on 10/11/2007, -7/+32http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/4415/haha2nr1.jpg
'Nuff said. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -9/+28AIDS helps the Pharmaceutical companies to put a 5000% mark up on a pill that will just slow down the disease.
Great, huh? - Boshow, on 10/11/2007, -12/+29@bmartin
I agree completely. AIDS is a preventable disease. If you don't want AIDS, you can alter your lifestyle so that you would not get it. More Cancer research. - ask03, on 10/11/2007, -4/+21Solutions to problems in Africa:
1) AIDS - Give them condoms. Airdrop them from planes if you have to.
2) Malaria - use DDT in small quantities. It is effective at keeping mosquitoes away for months.
USAID has just approved funding for its use again recently.
3) Help African countries establish and respect rules for property rights. Defining property helps an economy grow. E.g., Zimbabwe - when Mugabe's land reforms took away land from aristocratic white farmers, food shortages started killing people when the Africans didn't have the skills, machinery, capital to continue producing at the same levels. Not supporting post-colony landowners here, but saying that rules need to be defined, thought out and a country must be stable in order to encourage the long term growth that is the only real solution to ending poverty.
4) Tell Bono that blindly giving money to African governments has gotten us nowhere for the past 15+ years now. Unfortunately all too many countries are ruled by a "Kleptocracy" where those in power take as much as they can in aid money and little reaches those in need. This is why we attach stipulations to giving and the process is slow, because there must be oversight. - andrewsmith1986, on 10/11/2007, -30/+46am i the only person that absolutely hates bono?
- ChrisWickenscom, on 10/11/2007, -21/+33Bono needs to shut the ***** up.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11I'm sick of everyone treating Africans like perpetual children. If they can't grow enough food to feed their kids, why do they not STOP *****. That's one campaign that I could really get behind.
I wanna see "STOP *****, AFRICA!" billboards across the African continent. I'd donate $Rosie. Hey, it's not $Texas, but it's close. It's pretty close. I wanna see every African man, woman and child wearing underwear with that typed in size 72 font, bold, UNDERLINED in red. STOP *****, AFRICA!
Maybe a smiley face too: STOP *****, AFRICA : ) - rnwen2750, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9WHO death rates:

http://ucatlas.ucsc.edu/cause.php - bwats2, on 10/11/2007, -5/+13I agree that Bono should probably extend his campaign to supporting victims of other ailments. However, I don't think its right to speak of Bono negatively, since unlike other people of similar status, he is as at least he is doing something that is good for humanity
Also, at least Bono is unlike a President who spends billions on a war that he is unable to win, instead of investing in more important issues, such as cancer research, which could have the potential of saving lives. On the contrary, Bush also seems to promote the death of the innocent. - canewediggit, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11note to fordicus- he is a human first and he is acting humanely. musicians have always been at the forefront of social movements, go look at vietnam and tell me where the peace movement would have been without the music. slaves used songs to pass coded messages about the underground railroad. nina simone brought the civil rights movement center stage with songs like "mississippi goddamn." bono wields influence, and he is making a real effort to affect a positive change where he sees your "world leaders" failing. all humans have that right.
he may be self righteous and come off with way too much 'holier than though' for a guy that wears $400 sunglasses, but at least he's making an honest effort. and you can tell how much time he spends doing it, u2 hasn't had a good album in well over a decade. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11Bono is a total nutjob. He bleats on publicly about poverty and then the U2 tour ticket prices in Brazil were set to just over half the ANNUAL wage of the average Brazilian!!
Famously - Bono on stage in Glasgow, Scotland, slowly clapping his hands:
"Every time I clap my hands another Third World child dies"
Glaswegian voice loudly from the audience:
"Well stop clapping yer f**king hands then!" - bmartin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7The fact remains that people need blood transfusions for operations. Despite the fact that this is a small percentage of cases, we need to keep in mind that for these people, effective screening is absolutely necessary.
@fordicus: I agree. Did you note, though, that many children born HIV-positive are HIV-negative after the first few months? The virus disappears in the majority of cases. Mothers can also be treated with drugs to reduce the likelihood of an HIV-positive child. - krinthekuz, on 09/16/2008, -5/+11did bono say this before or after he stepped off his $30,000,000 private jet?
- CannedMango, on 10/11/2007, -5/+11note to fordicus:
If you're waiting for "world leaders" to fix problems, I wouldn't start holding your breath.
If Bono is raising awareness, good for him. You don't have to like an individual to agree with their cause. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -8/+14I sure don't see him giving his millions to the cause. Typical.......RICH celebs beg everyone to give give give, but
you never see them giving anything. "Oh we give our time"......yeah, whatever. - CraigCarlyle, on 10/11/2007, -14/+19Why doesn't he donate some of his own money?
Last I heard, he doesn't. He performs "awareness concerts" and screams at politicians. - Thathurts, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8The world, most notably the United States, has put in such a wasteful amount of money into a problem that can't be solved.
Their is no way for countries to help others, who do not even want to help themselves.
We should pull useful tax payers money from this stupid *****, and put it into issues that help solve our own problems at home. - atbnet, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7He has money duh. And he keeps himself in shape so you can live a lot longer with the disease before it develops into AIDS.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I know this never really happened, but it's still funny.
At a U2 concert in Sydney, lead singer Bono asks the audience for some quiet.
Then in the silence, he starts to slowly clap his hands.
Holding the audience in total silence, he says into the microphone,
“Every time I clap my hands, a child in Africa dies.”
An “Aussie” voice from near the front pierces the silence,
“Well, stop ***** clapping, ya *****.” - TheDaftPunk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5There are people right here in America that need help. Homelessness and hunger are increasing in the United States, I think that should be a priority.
But say the U.S. does send money over there, someone tell me what the money will do. These people keep having sex with eachother, and the virus keeps spreading. These people need to stop having sex first and foremost, and then become educated about it. The governments of these countries already know about the problem and should tell the people about it since, apparently, they are completely oblivious. That way they are educated and then they can be protected and hopefully this virus can be kept to low numbers until a cure can be found... - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Wow, lots of people hating on Viraz with the moderation. You know it's a tough crowd when you say "I have cancer" and the mods say "AIDS is more important".
Hope you make a full recovery Viraz. - lukee, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7@phractured:
Make sure to wear the AIDS ribbon. Otherwise people might think you don't want to fight AIDS, even if you're walking the walk.
/seinfeld - rnwen2750, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6When was the last time that you motivated literally millions of people to give and be more aware?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I know, it's not Constitutional either. We didn't cause their AIDS.
I swear, if it turns out some asteroid comes in 50 or 100 or 200 years and we're not prepared b/c our govt stole too much of our money and gave to Africa instead of tangibly progressive R&D to help our species survive better, I will be adamantly unhappy. I might even make heated negative remarks towards governmental officials! - scottc, on 10/11/2007, -6/+9@CraigCarlyle
"Why doesn't he donate some of his own money? Last I heard, he doesn't. He performs 'awareness concerts' and screams at politicians."
I don't know about today, but during the Zoo TV tour I talked with U2's road manager for awhile (friend of a friend) and he said that they were sending an advance crew to every city they played in to identify charities that supported their beliefs, and then donated proceeds from each show to them. From everything else I've read about the band I think they really do what they preach. - Boshow, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Shouldn't we put more funding toward the disease that kills more people. Its cancer btw.

http://www.avert.org/worldstats.htm - Meowbiusfox, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7I prefer Bono's political activism over U2's music.
Take pot shots at him if you want,at least he attempts to make a difference you jaded asshats. - mojibyrd, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Bono, is nothing more than a NWO shill and no better than that piece of ***** Al Gore....if Bono were that concerned he would do more than pretend to shame countries and governments into doing more...if our governments really wished to eliminate hunger/poverty/lack of fresh water in the world it could be done....hell look at all the jobs we have given china over the last 10-20 years, they could not have been shared with africa? Look at the billions and billions of dollars, the United Nations have sucked out of countries such as America/Canada/Britain/Australia and other developed countries over the years, but yet, wait for it, the 3rd world countries such as Africa are no better off....hmmm now why oh why is that possible, perhaps when you have deviant lying pieces of ***** running the U.N. sucking the charity of the giving dry then you have your answer.
But of course you non-believers will realize that the answer is that simple, even though you have Wolfowitz sucking the World Bank dry, now do you not think the same is happening at the so-honest united nations...yeah right!! - jockser, on 10/11/2007, -9/+11Bono is a musician but also a very influential figure and at least he is trying to do something with hes money and fame.
- moracity, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3F*ck Bono. The world has been throwing away money at Africa for years and what do we have to show for it? Not a damn thing. Money isn't the answer. The money and food just gets stolen by the various African governments or warlords. G8 countries have their own problems to deal with and can't keep throwing away money to people who will never see it.
- rnwen2750, on 10/11/2007, -11/+13You all are ridiculous. Don't cure AIDS, cure cancer? What the hell? You all are arrogant for thinking one is somehow more "deserving" of a cure than the other.
- marty0577, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Scew Bono, he has so much money, why doesn't he just save the world all by himself?
- Cerebral, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3@Viraz and Boshow and BeyondGoodnEvil
I agree with all of you and there are some people in here that just don't get it.
Yes there are always going to be cases where the person with AIDS did not intentionally get it (blood transfusions and rape examples) but that is just a part of life. Maybe we should put more into having a better system of checking blood to try to stop transfusions. Rape happens no matter if there is AIDS involved or not but I don't see a cause out there raising money to help people who have been raped (w/out AIDS) regain a normal mental status. My mom taught me at a young age to "keep it in my pants", maybe she should be the next bono and trademark that phrase and take it over there along with Beyond's message.
As far as children born with the disease... I'm sorry, it is sad however these people should not be having sex in the first place if they cannot deal with the consequences. It is not like they are children and do not know what will happen, the education has been out there for a long while. I would love to help that baby get rid of the disease but until there is a change in the way that people act towards sex in Africa then it will do no good as even if we had a way to rid the child of the disease whats to say that the child would not contract the virus again when he/she gets older because of an ignorance to the warnings.
I will get dugg down for this but I do not feel sorry for those that have contracted AIDS by actions they have taken knowingly (sex, sharing needles etc.) nor do I feel sorry for those who contract lung cancer from smoking (and the like). Everyone knows the risks and they CHOOSE to be ignorant to the warnings. I am almost worried that we may find a cure for such self inflicted diseases because then people would go about their habits even more recklessly than they do now and I don't want to know what new diseases could be created from those habits.
Viraz... hope everything works out great for you and your family, you will be in my prayers. - BrandonMills, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I didn't think Digg was filled with this kind of thinking. Do you really think AIDS, going unchecked, isn't going to affect you in some way or another? We're in a global society, people. Every since the advent of mass transportation, this has been the case. You think leaving Africa as a breeding ground for diseases of all sorts is a 'good thing'? For HIV, TB, Maleria, or whatever else can just keep evolving until it comes up with the next supervirus?
Bush, Americans 'man in charge' for 8 years straight, has pretty much neutered any decent safe sex programs in favor of his abstinence-only ideals. So don't talk about the proper education thats not happening. Speaking of people in America that need help, many Americans with HIV can't get the drugs they need to extend their lives because of lack of funding. AIDS is spreading faster that ever. People seemed to have forgotten about just how bad it is an let it drop off the radar, yet new infection rates continue to dramatically increase.
Man's inhumanity to his fellow man just infuriates me sometimes. There are drugs, that exist now, that can prolog the lives of 'living people' who are infected with HIV. How about stop treating them like statistics and start treating them like human beings? - timbob, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2i'd rather have him self righteously touring the world forcing his views on everyone than touring the world forcing his one note bass lines on a few. I don't like like high and mighty bono any more than the next guy, but it's better than having to listen to u2.
- atbnet, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5Why should it be up to the wealthy nations to help Africa when AIDS is obviously caused by gays and our tolerance of gays.
-Jerry Falwell - Godwhacker, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Why is Bono surprised? The west has been participating in genocide in Africa for generations.
- bobzibub, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Nuthun like a bunch of virgin digg folk telling the whole freak'n contenant of Africa that -- they too -- should not have sex.

Yeah it does seem like a tough crowd here. Thanks for your support. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3@rnwen "No, we did plenty to "***** up" their countries. By dividing up Africa in a fashion that preserved the finances of the Europeans and the US instead of allowing them to have any say whatsoever in the decision, we effectively set their progress back years and caused mass chaos."
Wrong. We did literally NOTHING to cause their spread of AIDS. That happens from their lack of basic hygiene and promiscuity, not to mention their lack of advancement in medicine, which CANNOT be said to be from white devil's oppression. They are much better off from our presence than without it. Don't believe me? Google video search: Africa Addio. 2 hour documentery from the 60s, very well done, by the directors of Mondo Cane. In fact, here's the link: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5855323615829365487 - ViRaZ, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3@ rnwen2750
But AIDS is preventable, some cancers are not. Mine just happened to be testicular cancer. I also never said research funding should stop for either of them. We need research for all types of diseases to find a cure for each one.
@ squeevey
Yes a virus AIDS is but as I said it is a preventable disease. And I don't have the money to afford the doctor and hospital visits. My girlfriend is about to have our baby, I have cancer and both of us can't get Medicaid. They just turn us towards the door. I'm not looking for pity, in my first post I was asking for jokes to help make me smile, is that so bad? I'm also helping spread awareness about cancer and answer questions like boshow had. - Hetman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3People just dont care about africa. They never have and they never will. All they care about are endangered animals and the diamonds we can get. As long as we keep getting diamonds and no animals go extinct nothing will happen.
- rnwen2750, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4I think he is saying that we are not doing enough. Bush slashed the safe sex/condom distribution funding as one of his first acts in office. We have so many resources at our finger tips, but spend them in ways that could be more efficient.
- Afreyt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Um... you mean heart disease? Lung cancer doesn't even rank in the top 5, and its preventable by not smoking. The other cancers aren't even close!
eh... nm.. rnwen beat me to it.
Here's the global listing: http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0779147.html - rupaw, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Bono and Bob Geldorf - the "George W. Bush and Tony Blair are good men" sell-outs - make me puke. These "superstars" commercialize the whole charity and aid idea to bolster their own egos. They embrace the most powerful people on this planet who largely are responsible for the mess here around.... Politicians, industry leaders... they all use the spotlight for their own agenda. Bill Gates did more for Africa alone than all the rock concerts and GAP-cooperations together.
