- byrdboy, on 04/11/2009, -8/+31In other news, 53 people died from falling in the United States today.
- backslashdigg, on 04/10/2009, -1/+19What's frightening is I go to U of M Dearborn, which is right next to HFCC. I didn't hear about this until I drove to school today...I got there and saw the local news outside HFCC and their exit was blocked by a cop car.
I decided to check the wxyz.com (the local news' website) to find a BREAKING story of murder/suicide next door. I'm glad to find out that the emergency system they tested last week (I ended up getting 4 calls at my house--this is a test blah blah, an email, and a text message) was put to good use....not.
The only thing I got was an email 2 hours after the event, and of course I don't check my email constantly. The email was pretty lame too:
"There is a police situation at the Henry Ford Community College campus, and their campus is on lock-down. Dearborn Police are containing the situation at the Henry Ford Community College. While there is no physical threat to our campus, our Public Safety has a presence at the north end of our campus.

- diggduggjoe, on 04/11/2009, -1/+16About 110 died in vehicle related accidents.
I'll bet they had a relationship and one wanted it to be over. This will be a crime of passion and would have easily been done with a knife and a rope.
This is horrible, but until we stop selling the perfect life to everyone, it will never end. For example, too many people need someone to "complete" themselves. That just makes the heartbreak of the inevitable dissolution more unbearable. Losing someone is the equivalent to losing yourself. That is not true, but that is what our society tends to convey.
When I try to imagine the past without movies and TV, I see a world where real relationships had a chance, without Dr Phil or Oprah telling you that you are too good for that relationship. I can see a world where kids never see guns as toys and are educated about them in a smart way. - hawkspur, on 04/11/2009, -13/+28Cue the gun-grabbers in 5...
- SEANWOOKIE, on 04/10/2009, -2/+17I was at work at Meijer when I heard two students of HFCC complain about how they weren't getting out of school for a few days because of the shooting. And that is how I heard about the shooting.
- mrgreg, on 04/11/2009, -16/+28Yet another criminal who blatantly avoids the "Gun Free School" Law to inflict harm on others.
How many more times must this happen before law-abiding CCW Permit Holders are able to defend themselves against those who ignore law? - ZeeZee2k, on 04/11/2009, -3/+14When everybody is dead.
- roxgod666, on 04/11/2009, -3/+10Wikipedia + Google is the best school you can ever get. I can learn more useful information from the internet in a week than i can get in a school year.
- Sokkermick, on 04/11/2009, -0/+7I go to U of M Dearborn too, however I have a Blackberry and I got the email @ 1:45pm. Not sure if that was immediately reported, or if it was delayed, since I don't have classes on Fridays.
- BassMasterP, on 04/11/2009, -0/+7It's funny how it's all a big joke when a women is killed intervening a sword fight. But as soon as someone gets shot - OMG IT'S THE EVIL BLACK GUNS CREATED AND BLESSED BY SATAN HIMSELF.
Dead is dead - hawkspur, on 04/11/2009, -2/+8Obama != gun laws.
- inactive, on 04/11/2009, -0/+6Yep, that will cure everything! Great idea!!!
/S - dandandantheman, on 04/11/2009, -1/+7I kinda get what you're saying..
- padraic2112, on 04/11/2009, -0/+5@ draxenato
> A gun makes this sort of crime much much easier and therefore more likely to occur.
Your line of reasoning certainly qualifies as a theory, however, it lacks evidence. There's lots of studies of gun violence, violent crime in general, propensity to violence in the presence of a weapon, and so on. There are entire journals dedicated to studying crime and criminal tendencies.
I'll save you some time: your conclusion is not strongly supported by evidence. Feel free to look for it, though. - diggduggjoe, on 04/11/2009, -0/+5Doing the opposite of your group trying to say there is a war zone in America. The only way such hyperbole works is to include drug related crime, which should never exist in a free society. Drugs should be legal.
Suicides and crimes of passion will happen anyway.
There are over 200 millions guns in America in the hands of 80 million people. Nearly none of them were involved in a shooting yesterday. The problem is crazy people, not guns. Guns in the hands of normal people are not that high of a risk.
The point isn't to dehumanize the victim, but to keep track of the real scope of this type of thing. Even before guns, jealous guys have been knocking off their girls. They "love" them and the girls have no right to deny them. Obviously, the girl must be put in her place. That mentality is common and is far more dangerous than guns. - mrgreg, on 04/11/2009, -1/+6To both of you: Tell me one good reason why I am trusted by the state to carry a concealed weapon in nearly every public area, but never in a place such as a college campus, where people spend the majority of their time.
I am exactly the same person off-campus as I am on-campus. My behavior wouldn't suddenly change just because I changed locations. - WraTH017, on 04/11/2009, -3/+8Never.
- chesterogilvie, on 04/11/2009, -0/+5The benefits of the right to bear arms far outweigh the relatively rare incidents such as this one.
- mhearne, on 04/11/2009, -1/+5This time it wasn't a nut shooting at random victims. The article says probable murder-suicide (ain't love grand?).
Why is it that we never seem to see headlines like "Store clerk saved by man with concealed carry permit" or the like?
The media sensationalize the stories that the politicians and lobbyists tell them to. Like the drug war, any lie will do as long as it fulfills a particular agenda. - Foamator, on 04/11/2009, -1/+5When we ban schools.
- BassMasterP, on 04/11/2009, -0/+4Ok you just debunked your whole argument - why is a gun related death so much worse than any other kind of death?
Yea so, we have a higher percentage of gun related deaths - that makes sense because we actually HAVE more guns. The UK's crime rate has not declined since confiscating guns, if anything it's increased. Stabbings and rape are prevalent in the UK. I've been there recently and it seemed every day some ***** was happening and I couldn't even carry a knife (let alone a gun to defend myself). - diggduggjoe, on 04/11/2009, -1/+5No, a shotgun is not a distance weapon. It's range is limited, especially when trying to kill a person. Guns are impulsive, so is a crime of passion. A knife is impulsive for it is available in every kitchen in America. Stab your girlfriend on impulse, feel remorse and hang yourself back at your apartment. It has been done before.
- bearsandbulls, on 04/11/2009, -1/+5How many unarmed people does it take to disarm one armed man?
How many armed men does it take to take over a unarmed country?
"They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." -Benjamin Franklin - benhollister, on 04/11/2009, -0/+4[FYI: I go to Michigan State] We have an SMS service on campus and a couple of years ago we had a tornado; it took a few 'incidents' to get all of the kinks worked out of the system. Post VT everybody has been a lot more cautious, I'm just glad that campus government has taken advantage of such technology, and though it has been an effort to perfect, it is worth is in the end.
Prayers go out to the families. - Shadowhawk109, on 04/11/2009, -0/+4UMD representin' here. I seriously was ecstatic that I didn't have Friday classes. I can't imagine navigating through Evergreen/MichAve/Ford with all that construction AND police/media.
- WakeRider, on 04/11/2009, -3/+7I don't think it is gun laws that are the problem. It is peoples' attitudes towards each other. If people want to kill each other, they will whether guns are available or not. I remember reading a very interesting article on the internet but cannot find it! If someone is able to help me find it I would greatly appreciate it.
This article was about a survey that was done on teenagers. They were given a scenario about a man walking in when his wife was in bed with another man. The teenagers then had to finish the story about how the man reacted to catching his cheating wife. Teens from different countries came up with different answers. I remember the story written by the NZ teen was that the man would talk to his wife later and attempt to work through the issue. The American teen wrote the story about how the man got out his Colt .45 and blew off his wife and her lover's heads.
I believe that this article is related to the tragic shooting of this student in Michigan, and is rather revealing about Americans' attitudes towards guns and each other. I would really appreciate it if someone was able to find the article as I believe it is a worthwhile read. - du4l1ty, on 04/11/2009, -0/+4I understand completely. This happened about a half hour before a friend of mine had a class.
- BedPost, on 04/11/2009, -2/+6Man... I got a lot of friends going to Dearborn. This is pretty scary... I mean, I know the odds are its no one I know personally, but its a bit frightening when a story like this actually hits this close to home.
Stay safe kids, and please stop shooting eachother. There's no respawns IRL :(. - inactive, on 04/11/2009, -0/+4when I'm caught.
- StopTheLie, on 04/11/2009, -1/+4Just remember folks, it's always better to be unarmed and helpless when a murderer with a gun walks into your building and opens fire. I mean, come on...didn't you watch ABC's special "If I only had a gun?"

- Sokkermick, on 04/11/2009, -5/+8This happened at a college. That is why its a big deal. Read the story next time please.
- rheaume, on 04/11/2009, -2/+5See this murder suicide could have been prevented if the woman had a concealed weapons permit and was continuously pointing the gun at every doorway in case that gun nut came in
- diggduggjoe, on 04/11/2009, -1/+480 million US gun owners will not shoot any of their 200 millions guns at a person today.
- BassMasterP, on 04/11/2009, -1/+4 But a nice drive down a busy sidewalk will do. Or how about a homemade explosive (something cheaper and easier to get than a gun)?
It can even be done with a knife, just not all at once.
Stop being so naive and get a grip yourself. Until we make guns that shoot and think for themselves people will continue to kill one another - gun or no gun. - m0tbaillie, on 04/11/2009, -0/+3Tons of ***** happens on campus at MSU (and I'm sure it's the same at other large schools - i.e. the cover-up of that girl who was murdered at Eastern 2 years ago).
A couple months ago a guy was robbed at gun-point **in the dorms** (Mason-Abbot) here at MSU and Reslife/MSU officials/the police just ***** sat there with their thumbs in their asses. You know how people found out? The State News, and even then it was almost a week after the incident. MSU never issued an official report. People are such indecisive panty-waists when it comes to things like this in terms of growing a pair and actually telling people straight up what's going on. - inactive, on 04/11/2009, -1/+3What an imbecilic response. The point made was valid. If a gun is involved, the story always seems to make the news whereas those who die from falling are apparently not newsworthy.
- howclever, on 04/11/2009, -2/+4And? People get mugged at my college every other week at gunpoint.
Five years ago the college was actually bragging that rapes were down to "only" a dozen a year.
People kill other people for crazy and/or stupid reasons every day in every state of the US. We don't front-page an article for every one of them... hell, the CDC says there were 31,000 firearm deaths in 2005. - Akairenn, on 04/11/2009, -1/+3And it's such a shame that event might have happened regardless of any gun laws or even a complete ban. Or did I imagine that story a few weeks ago about the Australian bee keeper that was shot while a rival was attempting to loot his honey? (Yes, cue the Pooh jokes.) How about all the knife violence in England? Or that crazy mofo over in Japan awhile back?
I'm not actually trying to be a sarcastic asshat here. (I'm probably failing, but hey. :p) But "tougher" gun laws will solve nothing. We've been under the rule of ever-increasing gun laws over the course of a century, in fact - and yet if you listen to the media, we're awash in a wave of gun violence, with criminals running rampant through every school and immigration office. :p
The problem is cliche - society. Until legislation to control douchebaggery becomes magically effective, crimes like this won't end. They might involve large vehicles, or knives, or hammers, or baseball bats more often than guns - but such crimes won't disappear. - howclever, on 04/11/2009, -1/+3WRONG!
You learn more factoids than you would learn in school in a year... there's a gigantic difference. - howclever, on 04/11/2009, -2/+4You know what?
If it was illegal to carry a gun, criminals would stop using them to break the law and murder people the old fashioned way. - HamSandwich, on 04/11/2009, -1/+3Last time I checked, falling wasn't considered a crime.
- XonnoX, on 04/12/2009, -0/+2I live 10 miles from the school and heard nothing about it until I read this on Digg. And I have plenty of friends that attend that school. That frightens me
- Sinnic, on 04/11/2009, -1/+3such a shame the world isn't organized the way you think it should be, you upright, unerring citizen.
- ell0bo, on 04/11/2009, -3/+5I will give you that argument for VT, but not here. This was a crime of passion, and I doubt that anyone else could have stopped it from happening, even if they had a gun to protect 'others'.
Also, I am usually scared by the people i know that carry guns. I love hunting, but usually the people I think that shouldn't have a gun on them are the ones that end up with them. - P5ycHo, on 04/11/2009, -0/+2I sure hope for you that you are autodidactic.
- howclever, on 04/11/2009, -2/+4Hi there!
Every year, hundreds of tons of cocaine, marijuana, and heroin are smuggled into the USA.
There are millions of people living in the USA who have entered illegally (only a tiny minority using fake documents).
In a country as large as ours, with extensive borders (in unpopulated areas) its impossible to prevent the illegal import of all sorts of goods. If we can't stop PEOPLE from entering the US illegally, how are we going to prevent handguns from entering illegally?
It would be great if you could push a reset button and eliminate all handguns from the USA. But its impossible to do... and even if you could eliminate every handgun in the US today, you'd create a massive black market for criminals who are already adept and smuggling all sorts of things into the country.
The sad thing is that "gun control" is the new abortion topic in the USA... there's a real issue that affects many people, but its hidden behind rabid ideology on both sides.
I also take issue with your argument that guns = crime. The good 'ol USA also has a high amount of non-gun related crime compared to most industrialized nations. Three potential reasons are a non-homogeneous population, lack of a social safety net, and low population density. -
