- Protosome, on 09/13/2008, -2/+102I just don't understand how we can have these type of collisions with the technology available now. Don't they have GPS and track every train? I guess my knowledge of how trains operate is limited.
- LordofChaosIori, on 09/13/2008, -1/+38News sources are saying they collided at a switch when one of the trains failed to stop and let the train with priority go by. One of the trains was a freight train, and as of writing there's four people confirmed dead, although that number is expected to rise.
- inactive, on 09/13/2008, -6/+41Never heard of a swerving train.
- Foot56, on 09/13/2008, -0/+35I was supposed to be on that train. I gave a presentation at CSUN and I always sat in the front of the train being the back is always over crowded however a buddy was in the area and decided to give me a ride. I would probably not be typing this if it was not for him.
- inactive, on 09/13/2008, -3/+37Because a car weighs 1 ton and a train weighs 8000? It takes at least 20 minutes for a fully loaded freight train to come to a stop, you can't just freeze 8000 tons of momentum in 5 seconds.
- Guitarsenal, on 09/13/2008, -2/+34One man waked away completely unharmed....
- HHP2K, on 09/13/2008, -4/+30
"We don't know if we hit another train or another train hit us," Tyrrell said.
Hmm.. I guess the highly detailed and long-winded investigation into this should tell us, shouldn't it, Tyrrell? - egthareal, on 09/13/2008, -0/+22There was a time when digg would actually have "breaking" news. Now spam stories use the term "breaking" and the news takes forever to make front page.
- pintomp3, on 09/13/2008, -2/+23it's like a math problem gone horribly wrong.
- kevman459, on 09/13/2008, -14/+34Geeze these aren't small trains, you'd think one of them would have seen the other and swerved out of the way.
- inactive, on 09/13/2008, -1/+18Ever hear of a joke-o-meter? Yours is broken.
- GregFD3S, on 09/13/2008, -0/+17From the NTSB Most Wanted Safety Improvements:
- Railroad Implement Positive Train Control Systems.
- Objective Prevent train collisions and overspeed accidents by requiring automatic control systems to override mistakes made by human operators.
- STATUS Acceptable response, progressing slowly.

I'm going to hell. - LordofChaosIori, on 09/13/2008, -3/+18Didn't think that one through huh?
- LordofChaosIori, on 09/13/2008, -1/+13At least 10 Dead. 100+ Injured. 222 Passengers.

Formerly known as MStat before that account was banned. Another paid McCain Shill.
Kevin/Digg Admins: Can't you just start banning not these people's accounts but theit IPs and/or domains? This asshat is spamming EVERY SINGLE STORY with the same copypasta. - dontdoitjake, on 09/13/2008, -0/+11This happened down the street from my house (I live in Chatsworth). I can still hear helicopters from my room, its pretty crazy. They've blocked off all of the streets leading to the area and theres just policemen everywhere.
Things like this shouldn't ever happen. My heart goes out to everyone affected by this accident. I hope all of the victims rest in peace. - S5S5S5, on 09/13/2008, -3/+13I agree. These days you even have collision detectors on cars that engage the brakes when it detects an imminent crash, don't see why you can't put a similar system on trains.
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -0/+10This reminded me of Unbreakable when I read it...
Tragic, at any rate. I don't understand how these railroad collissions even happen nowadays. - lies03, on 09/13/2008, -0/+9They did not show all of it. On live t.v. she said that she hold him as he died, and that his brain, maybe part, was sticking out of his head. She was in even more shock after saying that, but the link did not show it.
- thatsmyaibo, on 09/13/2008, -0/+9I was wondering the same thing. I live 5 minutes away from this accident and all I can think is "how do trains collide? How can they go opposite directions on a single track?"
- rald84, on 09/13/2008, -1/+10now 18.

“It is a very, very sad situation,” Denise Tyrell, a spokeswoman for Metrolink, told The Los Angeles Times. “We honestly don’t know what happened. Obviously two trains are not supposed to be at the same place at the same time.
thanks captain obvious - inigomntoya, on 09/13/2008, -0/+8Get that lady to a disaster counselor - sheesh... That really affected her in a bad way...

- LordofChaosIori, on 09/13/2008, -1/+8The deathtoll is up to 7 now, with 40 injured.
- GameEngineer, on 09/13/2008, -0/+7Google map of the location:

Farther down the tracks there is a split where one of the trains was supposed to wait for the other train to pass. For some reason the conductor didn't. If you zoom out and follow the tracks you can see the track split off to the West beyond a couple of tunnels.
Also the trains collided right at a bend in the tracks and weren't able to see the other oncoming train until it was too late. - justinlarsen, on 09/13/2008, -0/+6Dang, i used to ride this train every friday and monday when i had my old job. Thank you new job for allowing me to type this comment.
- DarkJedi375, on 09/13/2008, -1/+7If a train leaves San Francisco at 4:13pm traveling southbound at 85mph, and another train leaves San Diego at 7:10pm traveling northbound at 80mph, at what time will people realize that the obvious math joke is not very funny?
- migshark, on 09/13/2008, -0/+6What a horrible day for the world: Pakistan retaliates against the US; India and Iraq get hit with a wave of bombs; this train crash; and the Mexican executions. The day isn't even over yet.
- inactive, on 09/13/2008, -2/+8The unimaginable has happened. All the safety measures failed, the warnings didn't go off and nobody knew it. From a perspective of a software developer, I just don't get it, how such thing is allowed to happen.
- inactive, on 09/13/2008, -0/+6I love being able to say this.
*****. OFF.
Brought to you by the first amendment, which McCain and Palin will try to take away. - inactive, on 09/13/2008, -0/+5That was actually a really amazing article.
It was called "I Killed a Man Today", or something like that. - S5S5S5, on 09/13/2008, -0/+5You are correct. But even if it shaves 1 second off the response time it might be worth it.
- blankypoo, on 09/13/2008, -0/+5Bruce Willis doesn't live in LA anymore, so not likely :P
- mrpeachum, on 09/13/2008, -0/+5Had this happened on one of Europe's modern main lines, the train would have automatically been stopped when the driver passed the red signal due to the ATC system in place on the tracks. The US needs to invest more money into train systems like ATC so that things like this can be avoided.
- aksn1p3r, on 09/13/2008, -2/+7Man, whats with technology that man made, always has a fatal flaw!
- inactive, on 09/13/2008, -0/+5I think you forgot about Hurricane Ike that just destroyed a bunch of ***** in Galveston and Houston.
- saralovemuffins, on 09/13/2008, -0/+5This happened right by my house. There were helicopters and dozens of ambulances swarming the Chatsworth area. I couldn't even get home because Topanga Canyon was blocked off. I just hope everyone that survived is going to be okay, and that the families of the victims will heal.
- thedaytripper, on 09/13/2008, -0/+5Death toll was 27 last time I checked.
- Typhoon2009, on 09/13/2008, -3/+7This reminds me of this one story I heard where a guy committed suicide by jumping infront of a subway train. Apparently one commuter asked the station manager "So is my train going to be late or what?"
- greenblob, on 09/13/2008, -0/+4Was there a mosquito flying back and forth between the trains?
- PamalaLauren, on 09/13/2008, -0/+4Yeah luckily the Metro was going west into Simi (my area) and was being pulled. What got me was the fact that none of the news states could tell that it was one passenger car and the freaking engine that had compacted together. They kept thinking it was one car only. Anyhow I watched all afternoon and most of the night (I'm stuck in bed with a back injury at the moment). Was a horrific site to say the least. Saw several dead people pulled out. The count is up to 18 right now but they haven't accounted for everyone on the train yet so more dead are bound to be pulled out later today. So sad. Not sure how this could happen. It was a blind corner as well and some witness' say both trains were moving at approx. 40mph each. So sad.
- drakia, on 09/13/2008, -0/+4Tell me how your hands are doing after that drunk driver hits you :)
- dondara, on 09/13/2008, -1/+5"DEMOCRATS THINK TOO MUCH"
I've never heard anybody accused of that before. Maybe you should try it. - acegi, on 09/13/2008, -0/+4i'm going to hell for this but
I lol'ed - geekchic, on 09/13/2008, -2/+6Is this the American version of the Large Hadron Collider ?
- Appity, on 09/13/2008, -0/+4Did they find the Higgs Boson?
- imacmike, on 09/13/2008, -0/+3It is fortunate that the Metrolink train was being pulled from the front. In many cases, they are pushed from an engine in the rear. Had that been the case, many more would have been killed.
- inactive, on 09/13/2008, -0/+3Long enough to watch Unbreakable, and ask if Bruce Willis made it out without a scratch ;)
