- KevenM, on 01/04/2009, -0/+31This is why people who say that Digg is a news aggregator or a source for breaking news are wrong. The alert was removed a few hours ago.
- EMFK, on 01/03/2009, -1/+24Here's hoping there is no tsunami, but thankful the warnings are going out just in case.
- LucasVB, on 01/04/2009, -0/+12Digg is not a source of anything anyway.
- Cl1mh4224rd, on 01/04/2009, -0/+8Ummm.... From the article: "The Indonesian Meteorology and Seismology Agency issued a tsunami alert, but it was revoked within an hour after it was determined the epicenter was on land."
- inactive, on 01/04/2009, -0/+6The tsunami have killed thousands of people at Aceh. Now they are really scared if they heard warning signal.
- Zalian, on 01/04/2009, -0/+5I guess they will keep the trauma for a long time.
- Pandalume, on 01/04/2009, -0/+5Perhaps Digg is not the best channel for disseminating a tsunami warning.
- JerodSlay, on 01/04/2009, -1/+5Thumbnail fail.
- mark076h, on 01/04/2009, -1/+4@BreakingNewsOn on twitter is reporting Sea level rises and several tsunamis have already struck southern Japan, no word on damage
- lucutus, on 01/04/2009, -0/+3The quake triggered a small tsunami that hit the Japanese coast but there was no damage, Japan's Meteorological Agency said. The Indonesian authorities also issued a tsunami warning for Papua, but lifted it shortly afterwards.
http://uk.reuters.com/article/worldNews/idUKTRE502 ... - primehifi, on 01/04/2009, -0/+3the tsunami watch is over.
- Cl1mh4224rd, on 01/04/2009, -0/+3Can we get a real news source, please?
- KegBol, on 01/04/2009, -1/+3Ah, the culturally primitive American male. Like many other types of human male in the 1970's, he believes his country is somehow superior because he lives there. Despite all evidence that his generation is pretty much the weakest-willed, poorest educated and least aware people in the western world, he still holds on to his parents' view of the outside world from when they went there, 50 years ago.
Crawl back under your rock motl, before Palin comes back and shoots you. - KegBol, on 01/04/2009, -0/+2Papuans are largely Christian.
- ashgtx, on 01/04/2009, -0/+2I'm going home

Tsunami Alert for Indonesia
Submitted in News - 8 hr 45 min ago - inactive, on 01/04/2009, -0/+2That is the problem with the media. Now an Earthquake in Cali will spur all people in Japan to run for the hills. The media has everyone so scared of their own shadow, everyone has forgotten what its like to actually live. I would rather die in a tsunami enjoying life than be scared to death in my bomb/tsunami/hurricane/tornado/blizzard proof shelter.
- Cl1mh4224rd, on 01/04/2009, -0/+2Not possible. The epicenter of this quake was on land. Earthquake-triggered tsunamis are caused by vertical movement of the sea floor.
- andrastudio, on 01/04/2009, -0/+2I second that
- Goodanswer, on 01/04/2009, -0/+2Well I have all incoming earthquakes tied to my browser with Fire Fox's Mod and the last one was this..
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/Qu ...
I went back to the last 10 earthquakes and there was nothing above a 5.4 So someone tell me how they made it to a 7.3? Granted they have every right to fear but this seems a bit overboard. Not to mention that it was canceled hours ago. - URnotheonly1, on 01/04/2009, -1/+3My God it's coming right at us!!!
Look's like I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue. - IphtashuFitz, on 01/04/2009, -1/+3Interesting. IANAS (I am not a seismologist) but I believe the epicenter of the 1964 Alaskan earthquake that resulted in a 70 foot tsunami was centered just on shore about 80 miles east of Anchorage. That tsunami resulted in around 100 of the approx. 130 deaths. Of course the Alaskan coastline is significantly different from Indonesia so that might make a huge difference.
- Cl1mh4224rd, on 01/04/2009, -0/+2Thread-jacking, but I think this the quake in question: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/Qu ...
- gab00n, on 01/04/2009, -1/+2There has already been over a dozen after shocks and even another quake in the 7 range. Hopefully we won't get a submission for each quake.
- davidjunit, on 01/04/2009, -1/+2GW Bush's last attempt to wipe out those Jesus-hating Indonesians before he's booted from office!
- waskitaati, on 01/04/2009, -1/+2all these times the Govt of Indonesia focuses the mitigation and simulation on earthquake and tsunami (to minimize the number of casualties) in the area where earthquake had happened before or in the area which geographically potential for earthquake such as Bengkulu (west sumatra), Aceh, Nias, Yogyakarta, Manado (north sulawesi). Never heard any kind of this disaster mitigation held in Papua. For a country like Indonesia there should be more of this, especially in remote areas.
- johanesw, on 01/05/2009, -0/+1lol
- ojxx, on 01/04/2009, -0/+1i hope my family is okay =S
- mark076h, on 01/04/2009, -2/+2Those are the people that issued the Tsunami warning.
- mark076h, on 01/04/2009, -2/+2Yeah shows how much you know because an earthquake on land could not possibly effect anything out at sea
http://twitter.com/BreakingNewsOn - Mpwns, on 01/04/2009, -2/+2like i said in another thread this year is off to a great start.
- EMFK, on 01/04/2009, -3/+2Yes, I read that. However, it is important for them to continue doing this so we don't have a repeat of what happened several years ago. Getting people prepared and alerted is always a good thing.
- inactive, on 01/04/2009, -6/+1It's just a warm up for 2012 folks. You will see.
