- gcnaddict, on 06/22/2009, -1/+49My friend and I parted ways for different metro stations today; I was headed to the Orange line and he was headed to the Red. When I got off the Orange line train and heard about what happened, I tried calling and started having a panic attack when I couldn't reach him.
Turns out he got off at a stop before the accident, but he was equally praising his luck after hearing what happened.
Needless to say, my heart goes out to the family and friends of all of the victims and anyone else who is panicking over this. The worst news of which to be unsure is whether your friend or loved one is okay. - sockpuppets, on 06/22/2009, -2/+41The same way it did in 2008?
- Spanq, on 06/22/2009, -3/+36How the ***** does this happen in 2009?
- threedaysatsea, on 06/22/2009, -4/+28My thoughts go out to all those effected by this horrific incident. Hopefully the drivers weren't texting, for real.
- mikbunn, on 06/22/2009, -1/+23I just went with my sister to pick up her friend from the train station; both of them were flipping out.
My sister was freaking since she thought her friend was in the wreck (wouldn't answer her phone).
Her friend was freaking since she had to wait two hours on the train. She (5' 3", 105lb) scared the ***** out of the guy (6', 220lb) blocking our way out of the Metro station. I had to stop her from getting out of the car to go smash his car with an umbrella. Yeah, she's a little ***** crazy. - tpmidd, on 06/22/2009, -2/+22I wonder if CNN will be updating us about this breaking news story as they monitor Twitter, Facebook, and MySpace as they provide the hard hitting journalism we know and love.
- palehorse864, on 06/22/2009, -0/+17Part of this article just struck me weird and made it sound a bit like an attraction.

- Groovel76, on 06/22/2009, -0/+13A student of mine's little sister had just taken that line into DC not long before the accident occurred. Kind of crazy when someone you know could've been in an accident like that.
I hope this doesn't deter people from riding the DC Metro. Still is one of the best ways to get around DC. - likeyehokwhatev, on 06/22/2009, -0/+13"Watch injured passengers limp from the scene"
wtf... is this supposed to be news or entertainment? - lead2thehead, on 06/22/2009, -0/+12Because equipment malfunctions and people make mistakes.
- inactive, on 06/22/2009, -0/+11have you ever been on the dc beltway? its always rush hour.
- mikbunn, on 06/22/2009, -1/+11That's what I was wondering. How hard is it to keep track of which trains are on which rails?
I imagine a small relay in the lines every couple thousand feet could provide plenty of data to keep this kind of thing from happening.
BEEP BEEP BEEP TIME TO HIT THE BRAKES - SoulGrub, on 06/22/2009, -1/+9No doubt there would have been multiple safeguards that had to have failed simultaneously for this sort of thing to occur. Investigations will turn up whether those safeguards were adequate and adequately enforced.
- falser, on 06/23/2009, -0/+8I remember seeing the results of the crash in 2004. Those subway trains tear apart like tinfoil in a wreck. Don't think you'll catch me in the front or rear cars anymore.
- vinod1978, on 06/23/2009, -0/+7No, they are too busy talking about Chris Brown & Rhianna (or however you spell her friggin' name)
- relaxeder, on 06/22/2009, -0/+7@TheSkunkMonkey: I'm sure they have ways of figuring out whether the driver was texting on the job or not.
That's horrible though, I don't ride trains but you would think they have systems in place to make sure cars on the same rail don't just crash into eachother like that. - bubbameister33, on 06/22/2009, -0/+7"Faulty" comment.
- borez, on 06/22/2009, -0/+7Some video of the scene:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/8114003. ... - lead2thehead, on 06/22/2009, -1/+7Yes, genius... people in fact DO still ride the subway. More than ever, actually.
- mikbunn, on 06/23/2009, -0/+5I don't know why you're being dugg down. This is totally Obama's fault.
/s - jjesusfreak01, on 06/22/2009, -0/+5I think their signalling is even more complicated than that. I would think it would require a major oversight in the control room for something like this to happen. Metro systems like this are too complicated to have humans directing the trains around and the computers would signal a problem the second the first car stopped. It will be interesting to see what happened here.
- collution, on 06/23/2009, -0/+5That's hilarious but whoever wrote that should get in trouble for it; not the time or place for that.
- MacEnvy, on 06/23/2009, -0/+5Yeah, same here. My wife was about 3 trains back at Rhode Island Ave station headed northbound on that line. She called as soon as she could, thankfully, apparently it was pandemonium in the station. We live just north of the accident in Silver Spring.
A tragic day indeed. Hope nobody I knew was involved. - Falldog, on 06/23/2009, -1/+6It's CNN, so entertainment.
- relaxeder, on 06/22/2009, -0/+4Why is it disgusting to speculate? It wouldn't be the first time its happened.
- TheDiver, on 06/22/2009, -1/+5I got on the red line at 4:30 today coming back from work. We were stuck in the train at Union Station for a half hour before we started moving. It would have been nice if they had told us what had happened... there was very little communication to everyone actually riding at the time.
Hopefully this inspires better safety measures so it doesn't happen again. - geoboy, on 06/23/2009, -1/+5Well, first you have train A which departs from CityX and is traveling at 70 MPH and train B which departs from CityY and is traveling at 60 MPH. The two cities are 130 miles apart. Now do the math!
- siszam, on 06/23/2009, -0/+4The death toll is up to six now. 70 injured.
- TheSkunkMonkey, on 06/23/2009, -1/+5@wrath
The train did not derail. They were not traveling in opposite directions.
One train was stopped waiting for station ahead to clear when the second train slammed into the rear of the first train. - mikbunn, on 06/23/2009, -0/+3Throw it on 4chan and it'll be pornography.
- galvatron13, on 06/23/2009, -0/+3Wow, this is awful! My thoughts and prayers go out to all affected!
- shegaw89, on 06/22/2009, -0/+3Thoughts and condolences go out to the families of the at least 4 passengers whose lives were cut short.
- Pope13, on 06/22/2009, -1/+4The death count is now at 4 people, with the possibility of it going as high as 7. News8 in the DC Area has been doing continuous coverage. The Redline is now shutdown as well as the MARC trains that run on the tracks next to the metro.
- AzzidReign, on 06/22/2009, -1/+4RIP innocent dead.
- vinod1978, on 06/23/2009, -1/+4I can understand comedy but sometimes a little respect is in order...have some class.
- alexismyhomeboi, on 06/23/2009, -0/+3Condolences to the families and friends of the victims.
- TheSkunkMonkey, on 06/23/2009, -0/+3Do you honestly think you would have understood the message given over the train PA system? I've been riding those trains since it was first built and the biggest joke was the usual announcement you got when boarding.
"Next stop: *muffled sound*"
You can hear them say "next stop", but the destination is always unintelligible. - chriscim, on 06/23/2009, -1/+4She probably has the crazy eyes.
- sk926, on 06/23/2009, -0/+2I rode on the Metro to Takoma from Metro Center last Thursday. Gives me the willies.
RIP - brandita, on 06/22/2009, -1/+3Trains are dangerous though not as much as driving a car. I guess working at home would really be the best to avoid all risk.
- mshw, on 06/23/2009, -0/+2Orange line. East Falls church.
- MrFairladyz, on 06/22/2009, -3/+5reminds me of the metro crash in california last year. the engineer was texting minors :/
- jjesusfreak01, on 06/22/2009, -0/+2The best way, hands down. You can get on way outside of the city, and get off on the mall.
- diggduggjoe, on 06/23/2009, -0/+2People do not know how to drive anywhere. *****, I've seen businessmen working on reports during their drives to work.
That is why I like bigger cars. It is an insurance policy against the mayhem that a daily commute entails. Sure Gov'mt Motors can make a car with 100mpg, but I am not sure I want to drive to work in Styrofoam cup.
Mass transit is not always greener, either. Getting more car pools would be a better way to make for better transit. However, we need flexible employers and an online site to hook up with available rides. - Inceptious, on 06/23/2009, -0/+2That made me burst out laughing... VERY LOUDLY. AND ITS ALL YOUR FAULT! (its 1am here)
- vinod1978, on 06/23/2009, -0/+2I guess CNN is trying to copy E! News. They're doing a pretty good job. Put on CNN right now - and you'll see what I'm talking about.
- bshensky, on 06/23/2009, -0/+1Same here. Crap. My 6 year old will be severely bummed.
- hylando, on 06/23/2009, -0/+1Stupid MBTA drivers texting while operating.
