- amandanoelle, on 08/26/2009, -8/+40You never heard of this because it is not politically advantageous. There is no room in our media for black on white crime. It doesn't fit into anyone's agenda. But imagine the coverage had the assailants been white and the victims had been black! Reverend Al Sharpton would have ***** his pants!
- 9portal, on 08/26/2009, -6/+35That's right. The mainstream media don't want to tell a story about a white couple who were kidnapped off the street by a gang of black men and tortured and raped and murdered.
Yes they were BOTH raped, and he was set on fire whilst still alive, and she was left to suffocate
to death tied up in in a dustbin bag.
You have never heard of it.
IMAGINE IF IT HAD BEEN A GANG OF WHITE MEN AND A BLACK COUPLE
You would SURE AS HELL have heard about it then wouldn't you. - weirdralph, on 08/25/2009, -2/+30I can only hope that the parents of Christopher and Channon can now begin to find some measure of closure. Frankly, I can't imagine how you would deal with knowing such atrocities were committed on your child, but I pray that someday they eventually know peace.
- Commonwealth, on 08/26/2009, -1/+27Wow the details of the case are truly horrifying. If there was ever anybody that deserved the death penalty or worse, it's these guys. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murders_of_Channon_Ch ...
- thecoolestguy, on 08/26/2009, -1/+22There would be RIOTS if it was reversed.
- drazen77, on 08/26/2009, -8/+29@GoKings
Sorry, Black on White crime isn't news. That space is reserved for White on Black crime, or didn't you get the PC memo?
Sarcasm aside, these guys deserve the firing squad. - koolmoecraig, on 08/26/2009, -8/+26The only reason the death penalty isn't a deterrent is because we don't use it enough. Apply it only in cases with DNA proof.
Within an hour of a guilty verdict, pieces of ***** like this should be dead. - leahmariel, on 08/25/2009, -3/+20I have been following this crime since the beginning. I pray for the Christian and Newsom families and I know that while this is a victory, it will never heal the pain that they have endured. As Gary Christian said, 2 down, 3 to go, at least these animals aren't going to get away with what they did.
- tattoojoo, on 08/26/2009, -1/+16Cannot digg you up enough.
- nmanguy, on 08/26/2009, -4/+19Holy *****. Those ***** better be killed after experiencing some horrible supermax prison life. At least they're being tried in Tennessee where they will surely receive punishment, double true since they're black. Thank God it isn't like California, where people like OJ walk just because the people would feel guilty about making a black person go to prison.
I mean how the hell could someone do such horrible *****? For the love of God, didn't these people feel SOMETHING when they did this? I mean, I get sad sometimes if I see a person in a wheelchair on the road. To do this ***** is unfathomable. - Babazoz, on 08/26/2009, -1/+16I actually heard about this for the first time tonight. Great job, media. This crime was something you'd see best described in a horror novel, and you kept your mouths shut.
- BeShirtHappy, on 08/25/2009, -2/+16This story is close to home for me... I didn't personally know Channon and Chris or their families but as a mother and a woman this was just the most heart-wrenching things I've ever heard of.
- elYorte, on 08/26/2009, -1/+14I'm probably naive for saying it, but this is the kind of story that makes me wish there is some sort of afterlife, even only brief, so that the young couple can find peace with each other.
- amandanoelle, on 08/26/2009, -7/+20And what is sad is most people never heard of this story because it is not politically advantageous. There is no room in our media for black on white crime. It doesn't fit into anyone's agenda. But imagine the coverage had the assailants been white and the victims had been black! Reverend Al Sharpton would have ***** his pants.
- tattoojoo, on 08/26/2009, -1/+14Cannot digg you up enough as well.
- nmanguy, on 08/26/2009, -1/+9Anyone above an animal in sentience should be appalled by this.
- doctechnical, on 08/26/2009, -2/+10@GoKings: Join the club. I heard about it on radio a year or so ago, the commentator didn't mention the races of those involved until the end (and BTW, this article leaves out some very gruesome details of what that poor couple went through)... and all the while I'm in the car going "Why isn't this in every #%!ing headline?!?"
Because it was black-on-white crime, and the majority media simply isn't interested in carrying such stories. Remember that the next time someone tries to tell you only FOX news is biased. What bollocks. - wubblie, on 08/26/2009, -0/+8What a horrific crime. If someone robs or attacks you, *NEVER* allow them to put you in a car or take you to a second location- do whatever you can- bite, scream, claw, etc. This is true even if they have a gun. The statistics on this are incredible. You are basically ensured of being killed or raped if they can get you into a car or to a second location, and if you resist, it is highly unlikely that the agressor will persist, much less shoot you, and if you run, even if they try to shoot (which they rarely do), your chances of being fatally wounded are only 3%. Resist as voilently as you are able- get angry and get vicious.
- anonymousmedic, on 08/26/2009, -3/+11Tennessee is too good for this guy. He needs to go to Louisiana and meet Ol' Sparky.
- LastDitchHero, on 08/26/2009, -0/+8Glad they convicted this sorry piece of *****, now only if they can get his buddies. I mean this isn't just some simple murder, they raped a girl for DAYS before killing her. These guys are animals who deserved to be put down. It won't matter if they get the death penalty or not they will end up being killed in prison.
(for the record, I was attending UTK at the time and I grew up in Knoxville). - blokeski, on 08/26/2009, -1/+8I've read all sorts of nasty ***** about serial killers, but reading what was done to these people by these ***** creatures actually made me feel a bit sick.
Hopefully this won't be their last experience of anal rape. - macmcraeart, on 08/26/2009, -1/+8if it was really about deterrents - we would still be hanging criminals on crosses in the town square.
- franklymister, on 08/26/2009, -0/+7Rape is a crime of violence, not sex.
- thecoolestguy, on 08/26/2009, -3/+10Then you would never hear the end of it. This kind of double standard with regards to interracial crime is offensive beyond words.
- amandanoelle, on 08/26/2009, -0/+6I totally agree!!
- amandanoelle, on 08/26/2009, -0/+6had to digg this story because of it's proximity to where I live (Knoxville). Absolutely heart wrenching. I cannot fathom the anguish the families must be going through. My heart also goes out to the families of the accused, because it cannot be easy for them to watch their children go through this and know that they are actually guilty.
- nickmas, on 08/26/2009, -1/+6Kill. Them. All.
- digitizit, on 08/26/2009, -1/+5Race has, and shouldn't have, any bearing on this case. One set of people did unspeakable things to another set of people. It doesn't matter what color of skin they have. To do those things to another human being is beyond barbaric, and people of all ethnicity have been guilty of similar atrocities.
In my opinion, neither the death penalty or life in prison are appropriate punishments. Neither one is harsh enough. I don't have a suitable substitute, but I don't think either of these punishments would suffice to serve as justice. - multiformat, on 08/26/2009, -2/+6The male victim was also repeatedly raped. I will assume the assailants were not openly or actively gay. What's up with that?
- JFitzpatrick, on 08/26/2009, -3/+7It's not really sarcasm when it's true. =/
- macmcraeart, on 08/26/2009, -3/+7and the shooters should all aim at the kneecaps.
- evanfacebook, on 08/26/2009, -0/+4Some of you bloodthirsty types need to get a grip. I was actually disturbed by the descriptions of raping and hanging I've read in these comments. Remember, the perpetrators of this crime are the psychopaths.... not you (hopefully). I understand your wanting just revenge but let's not literally go Medieval.
I went to the same high school as the female victim. The crime was heinous and they deserve to be punished severely (Being an atheist, I don't support the death penalty and view it as the shortest sentence possible... So let's see them behind bars for life).
Otherwise, let's follow the rule of law. If the prosecution can prove racial motivation for these murders, classify it as a hate crime, too. - Mykonos08, on 08/26/2009, -0/+4this is beyond sick. I mean, forget race for a moment and just look at this color blind; its beyond twisted and inhuman as ***** can get in this already ***** up world.
- hasslinthehoff, on 08/26/2009, -2/+6Death would be too lenient for these guys. They deserve something far more painful and horrendous.
- faskippy, on 08/26/2009, -0/+4Sometimes, yes. But you can't always make that connection, because it's not always there. It's totally possible for kind, responsible people to do the right things, and have a kid turn out to be a piece of *****. Genetics, chemical, whatever, it's not always so cut and dried.
Now, parents who don't try, and who obviously don't give a ***** about trying to raise a responsible kid...hell yeah. Hell, some "parents" even encourage criminal behavior. That story of the toddler thieves comes to mind. - SteelChicken, on 08/26/2009, -2/+5youre a moron, and a douchebag.
- BaconGod, on 08/26/2009, -2/+5Your argument is true but it goes both ways. When was the last time anyone other then white being kidnapped made national news?
The same way our music, television and books are going into the crapper so is our news. They know what will drum up anger and they report it. I am a black male and can't stand it when they give air time to the Jena 6, or other idiotic people like that Harvard guy. Ever notice how there are a lot of middle/upper class black people but you never see them on the news yelling racism? They only give air time to the idiotic ones who want to make a spectacle.
How about instead of sensationalizing the news they just report it equally. Get rid of these stupid panel discussions. Get rid of the emotional news casters and let you make your own choice. I am tired of racism this and racism that from both sides.
Hows about some good old fashion BBC style news with a hot multi ethnic chick who reads the news and doesn't throw in her 2 cents. Oh and add big boobs.
BTW: It may seem like it but a lot of stories are under reported. Huge stories get under reported for one reason or another. Hell there is a war in Iraq being very under reported right now. You automatically thinking it's because the guy is black is no better then someone jumping to conclusions and saying "why because I am black?" - 9portal, on 08/26/2009, -0/+3@ BaconGod
Yeah you speak the truth. I am a white male. And I hereby swear that I couldn't give a ***** what race a person is. But that basic lack of prejudice is challenged every time the MSN gives airtime to the professional race-baiters who insist that white people like myself must feel persistently guilty about something that either happened hundreds of years before we were born, like slavery, or of which we are totally innocent, like modern day bigotry ...
Then they completely ignore a horrible crime that like this.
What a fuss they make when they can say 'this horrible racist murder' But they only ever say it when white people can be painted as the evil doer. It is just sickening because it pretends that the bigotry is all one way. And I know from my personal experience what a lie that is. There is plenty of hatred towards people with white skin, just because they have white skin. How much you want to bet those animals called her a WHITE BITCH as they tortured her to death. - mac1175, on 08/26/2009, -2/+5This is pretty much one of the most disturbing stories I have heard. These guys deserve death. I know this is a digg and some people will retort with some diatribe of "they are people too". Spare me. I can't see how a human takes pleasure in such brutality.
- inactive, on 08/26/2009, -0/+3Excellent advice wubblie. Years ago there was a program on PBS called Street Smarts, hosted by retired Chicago Police Detective JJ Bittenbinder. His advice is the same as yours, in that you never go to another location with a robber.
http://www.jjbittenbinder.com/ - thecoolestguy, on 08/26/2009, -4/+7I'm surprised the news showed his face. Usually the media will censor such politically incorrect images.
- jba68, on 08/26/2009, -0/+3Yes, individuals are responsible for their actions. Don't attempt to place blame on others for an individuals act.
- GoKings, on 08/26/2009, -5/+8Was this like a famous trial or something? I've never heard about it.
- amandanoelle, on 08/26/2009, -0/+2Oh, and one more thing...since I am commenting on hypocricy--
I have read so many comments lately saying things like, "My heart goes out to the Christian and Newsom families. We are praying for them..." ETC. Honestly, I don't pray all that much. But I would hope that these same people are praying for the families of the assailants, as they are undoubtedly suffering as well. Maybe not in the same sense, but suffering none the less. - amandanoelle, on 08/26/2009, -0/+2CJdark--
I completely agree with you. No matter what, its awful on both sides of the fence. And I'm not saying the crime was racially motivated--I actually don't think it was. I am simply commenting on the hypocrisy of the media and the political agenda behind it. You cannot deny that a crime this heinous would not have gone unnoticed had it been the other way around. People like Rev Sharpton make a media spectacle out of things like Dog the Bounty Hunter using the "N" word (not that I am condoning it!). If something as small as a derogatory (and completely awful) word could stir such media controversy, a story of this magnitude would have been front page of every major newspaper.
And it's not that I think every "grisly murder" (as PToasty said) should be "thrown in our faces." I don't. And plenty aren't. There are hundreds of tragedies that happen every day that never even make it to the nickel print. Again, I am merely commenting on what I believe is the motivation behind the news stories that do and do not make it to the stand. Any crime story people believe to be racially motivated is going to sell--and the bottom line is it will be exploited and used for political agenda. - evandeluxe, on 08/27/2009, -0/+2Hate crime is specific to motivation because of prejudice (whether that's race, sexual orientation, whatever). It's sort of like classifying it as organized crime because they are often targeting and threatening a specific group and represent a specific threat to society. It tends to be more useful to the prosecution in cases where the victim survives.
Serial killers' homicides are rarely classified as hate crimes.
If there is compelling evidence that their crime was racially motivated or they have ties to anti-white extremist organizations, I would have no problem with it being classified to reflect a hate crime.
If this is simply a group of run-of-the-mill sick criminal minds and serial killers, we can't very well classify them as racist. But we can condemn them with every fiber of our being and detain/isolate them for the rest of their natural lives. - SkoGoody, on 08/26/2009, -0/+2This is the world I want to live in. Crime would be almost non-existent... But its all "politics" right? Everything is all about pleasing the masses. Problem is, the masses think that an eye for an eye punishment like you described is wrong and lowers us to the criminals behavior.
***** YOU MASSES! You people wouldn't know justice if it hit you in the ***** head with a morning star. Why do you think criminals continue to commit horrendous crimes like this? Because there's no way it could ever happen to them if they get caught. What's the worst that could happen? Free food and shelter, paid by idiotic taxpayers like me and you, and worst case scenario, death by a shot in the arm. WOOOOOW! Yeah, that's gonna scare the bejesus out of our criminal underworld, scares em good I tells ya! /s - mike2lane, on 10/07/2009, -0/+2digg up x 1,000,000,000,000,000!
- inactive, on 08/26/2009, -1/+3Red-hot pokers to the eyes. I don't care who disagrees.
- tattoojoo, on 08/26/2009, -2/+4One can only hope that while in prison for the remainder of their *****-hole lives (unless they get the death penalty *hope hope*), the Aryan brotherhood gets a hold of them.
