- inactive, on 02/11/2009, -1/+16I hope everyone is OK and the fatalites stop at that figure only. God Bless...
- pirlok, on 02/11/2009, -0/+11R.I.P.
- voldak, on 02/12/2009, -1/+8Lone Grove is my hometown and the damage is catastrophic. The town and community definitely took a big hit yesterday. It seems that the overall story is seeming a bit better (they have found a lot of the missing people) but this is definitely a situation.
I was about 5 miles away when the tornado hit ground, it was a very fast developing storm and I don't think that people had enough time to react (the tornado sirens sounded officially 5 minutes before it hit the ground)....definitely a bad deal. I pray for everyone that lost family and for the people and family that are still missing... - voldak, on 02/12/2009, -1/+7this may seem like a funny comment to you. But you are an *****. This tornado was a very quick moving store. I was driving near the storm and we had to drive very quickly to move out of the way of the storm. Grow up man...just grow up.
- inactive, on 02/11/2009, -0/+5Oh, that was devastating. The government should act fast.
- absolutelytrue, on 05/26/2009, -0/+5I feel terrible for these people and their families.
- Midtowner, on 02/12/2009, -0/+5Rural Oklahoma isn't the most affluent place in the world, and even in the more affluent areas, basements are pretty rare. Up North, y'all have building codes which require the footings of buildings be dug below the frost line. That's usually 3-4' (that's a meter to 1.3 meters). In Oklahoma, there's no such thing as a frost layer, so footings typically aren't very deep at all. Up North, it makes good sense to build basements because it basically only involves digging 2-3 more feet (another meter or so), so it's pretty cost-effective. Here, it'd bump up the cost of homes by quite a bit.... and if you live in a trailer or an old/poorly constructed home like many in small towns like Lone Grove do, then the likelihood of having a basement is damn near zero.

Nice. You know there a correlation between lacking basic fear and lacking intelligence right? Guess that explains Texas. - inactive, on 02/12/2009, -0/+4where the wind COMES sweeping down the plain.
- czeman, on 02/12/2009, -0/+4In a country, eh?
- darlingt, on 02/12/2009, -0/+3I went into meteorology exactly because of situations like this. I want to know more about why these storms happen, with the ultimate goal of giving more warning so fewer deaths occur. My thoughts and prayers are with the survivors and the victims' families of the Lone Grove tornado.
- TJENN, on 02/12/2009, -0/+3Kinda like how people choose to live in California, earthquake after earthquake. People live where they want to live.
- Midtowner, on 02/12/2009, -0/+3You're in Weatherford. The joke's on you.
A future SWOSU grad, no doubt. - pilgrim3970, on 02/12/2009, -1/+4I guess it is easy to be "practically immune from fears of storms" when you are watching it from 173 miles away. :-/
- inactive, on 02/12/2009, -0/+3I'm in Tulsa and no they haven't said anything about your girlfriend on the news at all ;-)
- ripperdav, on 02/12/2009, -0/+3Seems the world is getting more and more natural disasters all the time. It 's very sad about the families. A little prayer for this little town is certainly in order..
- whitters, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2 seriously. oh, and the noaa says the avg forward ground speed of a tornado is around 30 mph. nice try though...
http://www.noaawatch.gov/themes/severe.php - aijalon, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2Any chance the stimulus package could include tornado shelters for trailer parks?
- inactive, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Lone+Grove&oe=ut ...
- inactive, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2Good luck outrunning that.
- Anarchistry, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2This storm was absolutely frightening. I was scared *****!
- inactive, on 02/12/2009, -1/+3My girlfriend is in Oklahoma at the moment. I'm glad she's in Tulsa, haven't seen that on the news at all. Respect goes to the victims.
- IntruderII, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2I lived in Oklahoma for about 9 years and saw a few tornadoes in that time.
A lot of times even if you're close to one you won't know it. Imagine being in a strong storm at night. The rain, thunder, and darkness is so disorienting you really have no idea what's going on. It's usually nothing like those slow-moving easy-to-see tornadoes you see on TV. - davidlitts, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2Man, I'm from Lone Grove too, no one died in my family though
- pilgrim3970, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2so long as it is the state and local governments. The federal folks usually just stand around looking important but not getting much done. The ones who actually start helping these people is the Red Cross, Salvation Army, and neighbors.
- kuzotz, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2glad I am in beijing right now, and not back in OKC
- pilgrim3970, on 02/12/2009, -1/+3"Weatherford was in tornado warnings just like OKC."
Nevertheless, they sound those off for the entire county regardless of where it was. At best, you were on the extreme west edge, well away from where the nasty stuff was happening - which would still have been least 50 miles away from the closest tornado sighting. So sorry, you still don't get credit for staring down that big ol' scawy stwom.
And yeah, I used Google maps even though I grew up in Oklahoma. I doubt you could give me the exact mileage between any two points in Texas there stud. - czeman, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2Thank you. :)
- pilgrim3970, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2Only seems that way. They don't call it "Tornado Alley" for nothing. It is however, rare (though not unprecedented) that Oklahoma sees tornadoes this time of year.
- cjmal, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2Oh, you're gonna love spring.
- betona, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2You are clueless.
(1) Tornadoes are far more vicious storms than the TV show you watched to learn about them and they can move very fast and rarely are visible like Intruderll says.
(2) There are very few basements anywhere in the southwest. It's part cultural and part geology: many places have stone just a few feet down that would make it prohibitively expensive. So by far, most houses are on concrete slabs. There are a very few storm cellars, but they're the exception. - kuzotz, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2I'm from oklahoma city, but I can sympathize with those who get hit. I remember the F5. Still gives me nightmares today.
- Anarchistry, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2Blah, I've lived here all of my life, but this is the closest I've been to one.
- czeman, on 02/12/2009, -3/+4...where the wind goes sweeping down the plain.
- rancor01, on 02/15/2009, -0/+1I just ***** love it how you manage to work in "I live in Japan" in every post you make...
- inactive, on 02/12/2009, -0/+1yeah..........right
oh and it was storming just no tornados this time - satchthegreat, on 02/12/2009, -0/+1tornados are the new panda?
- kuzotz, on 02/12/2009, -1/+2being from oklahoma city. This is quite normal. But the fatalities aren't usually this high. it must've been a large one that went through maybe during the night.
- inactive, on 02/12/2009, -0/+1"1 death is a tragedy a million is a statistic"
- Uncle Joe Stalin - smackphat, on 02/12/2009, -1/+2You're cranky because you're in Weatherford, huh? That place is a *****. Oh, and you are ***** retarded.
Love,
A City Okie - RevPiper, on 02/12/2009, -0/+0Terrible,same storm rolled through Ohio and few hours ago,all I got was rainbows and wind.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/28817565@N03/32725620 ... - kuzotz, on 02/12/2009, -1/+1it isn't storming in Tulsa. I'm from oklahoma city, but right now I live in Japan, but I am on vacation in Beijing at the moment. Soooooooooooo glad I wasn't there, but my family is in OKC.
BTW OKC pwns Tulsa!!! - azwethinkweizm, on 02/12/2009, -1/+1damn straight, pharmacy school grad to be right here
- kuzotz, on 02/12/2009, -1/+1lol I'm from OKC. I don't ***** with anything outside of OKC besides. Norman, and Tulsa. That's it. I don't even like going to Stillwater
- yacinebouatrous, on 02/12/2009, -2/+1just saying, i'm not an a-hole, from what i saw on t.v, it's slow
- azwethinkweizm, on 02/12/2009, -2/+1No ***** man, I ***** hate this town. I'm a college student, not a resident.
I hate being associated with these people. - inactive, on 02/12/2009, -3/+2And they say we Okies are the stupid ones.
- DonAlfred, on 02/12/2009, -1/+0what about 8 deaths?
tragedy or statistic? - azwethinkweizm, on 02/12/2009, -2/+1Weatherford was in tornado warnings just like OKC.
Nice Google Maps stat, moron. - azwethinkweizm, on 02/12/2009, -3/+1@dauntless
