- AriaStar, on 01/05/2008, -12/+138No matter whether you like Bush or not, you've got to respect our troops. RIP, Buddy.
- BarbaraKolbe, on 01/05/2008, -2/+103His actual blog is here: http://andrewolmsted.com/ Peace, Andy.
- robert25, on 01/05/2008, -0/+80This hits close to home. Andrew Olmsted was my company commander once upon a time (HHC 1-68 AR BN) and I can tell you he was a great leader. He'll be missed for sure.
- Ionis, on 01/05/2008, -3/+46I must say I welled up reading through his final post. Such sad news, my heart goes out to his family and friends.
- inactive, on 01/05/2008, -5/+42There are times when offensiveness = funny. This is not one of those times.
- Monolith4, on 01/05/2008, -6/+38You're right. How ridiculous for someone who died in a war to want the rest of us to avoid wars. I mean, it's not like he has first hand experience of how much war sucks, or anything...

I think this may go on my tombstone. - redsfaithful, on 01/05/2008, -2/+32http://digg.com/world_news/Blogger_Andrew_Olmsted_ ...
The submission of his last post. Sad situation. - Hensworth, on 01/05/2008, -6/+34Since those were his last words, why cant you respect that?
- CeilingTiles, on 01/05/2008, -3/+30
I never met Andy. And I never read any of his blog posts before today. And now, I will never forget him.
Thanks, Andy, for all the things you did for all of us.
And dearest Amanda, our condolences go out to you. If there is one thing I take away from his goodbye it is his undying love for you.
Peace. - inactive, on 01/05/2008, -2/+29hats off to Major Olmsted, thank you
- inactive, on 01/05/2008, -5/+27I have friends who are *****. Please don't insult them by comparing this miscreant with them. They may take it up the ass, but they do so with a certain panache.
- moxley, on 01/05/2008, -2/+23I hate this awful war. Condolences to his wife and family, and to his friends and unit.
Losing someone who can write well from the war zone is a huge loss - most people never get the chance to know how, when, and where that they likely may die; Andrew knew this was a possible outcome enough to write that post - it is so prescient and amazing to read, it is amazingly rare for someone to be able to write their own obituary shortly before they die - and to me one of the most insightful parts is the following:
>>"...for those who knew me well enough to be saddened by my death, especially for those who haven't known anyone else lost to this war, perhaps my death can serve as a small reminder of the costs of war. Regardless of the merits of this war, or of any war, I think that many of us in America have forgotten that war means death and suffering in wholesale lots. A decision that for most of us in America was academic, whether or not to go to war in Iraq, had very real consequences for hundreds of thousands of people. " - bardamu, on 01/05/2008, -4/+24Wow. This should be required reading. Peace.
- alphaterminus, on 01/05/2008, -8/+28You, sir, are a ***** *****.
- tfox2k1, on 01/05/2008, -3/+22His final post was the saddest article I have ever read. Anyone with an opinion on this war should read and heed this hero's final thoughts.
- apollo168, on 01/05/2008, -2/+19Never read anything he wrote, but that post was almost too much for me to handle. I didn't know Andrew Olmsted, but may he rest in peace. Should there be pearly gates, it is sure that Andrew will walk through them to a standing ovation.
Dugg for being a real American hero. - ultraJesus, on 01/05/2008, -2/+18You are an idiot.
- GoatRoper, on 01/05/2008, -2/+18"I'm dead, but if you're reading this, you're not, so take a moment to enjoy that happy fact." As ironic as this may sound; great words to live by.
- apollo168, on 01/05/2008, -2/+17Never knew Andrew Olmsted or read his posts, but this was almost too much for me to handle. May you rest in peace Andrew Olmsted. If there are pearly gates, I am sure you're walking through them to a standing ovation.
Dugg for being a real American hero. - onisamsha, on 01/05/2008, -1/+16"This may be a contradiction of my above call to keep politics out of my death, but I hope not. Sometimes going to war is the right idea. I think we've drawn that line too far in the direction of war rather than peace, but I'm a soldier and I know that sometimes you have to fight if you're to hold onto what you hold dear. But in making that decision, I believe we understate the costs of war; when we make the decision to fight, we make the decision to kill, and that means lives and families destroyed. Mine now falls into that category; the next time the question of war or peace comes up, if you knew me at least you can understand a bit more just what it is you're deciding to do, and whether or not those costs are worth it."
Digg this article. More people need to be exposed to the words of men who have experienced the reality of war and come away from it wiser. - Killian14, on 01/05/2008, -15/+29I never understood why it was acceptable to generalize this group of people. I don't support the troops who rape the women or get iraqi kids to fight for water, I think support for what anyone is doing should be based on a case-by-case bases. Don't get me wrong, guys like the one who wrote this are awsome and deserve our support, but because he is a good man not because he is a troop.
- Wolvescan, on 01/05/2008, -3/+17Both my parents lost a brother in WWII. One over England with the Royal Air Force the other over Germany with the Canadian Air Force. I wish they had been able to leave us a note like this. I hope they all can download Babylon 5 where they have gone.
- ntmg05, on 01/05/2008, -2/+16If I could bury this 3 or 4 times, I would.
- mihnea007, on 01/05/2008, -6/+19I've never seen so many commentaries on a blog post before.
RESPECT for what he did - savingpvtbryan, on 01/05/2008, -1/+14http://www.defenselink.mil/releases/release.aspx?r ...
The Department of Defense announced today the death of two soldiers who were supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. They died Jan. 3 in As Sadiyah, Iraq, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked their unit using small arms fire during combat operations. Both Soldiers were assigned to the Military Transition Team, 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kan.
Killed were:
Maj. Andrew J. Olmsted, 37, of Colorado Springs, Colo.
Cpt. Thomas J. Casey, 32, of Albuquerque, N.M.
For further information related to this release, contact Fort Riley public affairs at (785) 239-3410 - SuperSunny, on 01/05/2008, -1/+14It appears you did not read the article? He wishes to not have his name used in any purpose that goes towards getting out of Iraq, or staying in it.
- alex7575, on 01/05/2008, -1/+14Let us know when your brother or father dies, and we'll laugh about it.
Hopefully you'll join us, given that you seem to find it funny when other people are killed.
I swear there's an idiot born every millisecond - triggerfinger, on 01/05/2008, -1/+13Respect
- gridbread, on 01/05/2008, -2/+14Of course we respect them, Bush has nothing to do with the troops.
Don't attack the guys pulling the wagon, go after the guy with the whip. - Ostizzle, on 01/05/2008, -4/+15You are truly a stupid *****.
- onisamsha, on 01/05/2008, -2/+13Can you sir, for one single ***** second, not turn everything you see into an attempt to attack those who disagree with you politically?
A soldier died serving his country; not a liberal, not a conservative, but an American. - inactive, on 01/05/2008, -1/+12You drone, respect the guy, don't make it political.
- Obsydian, on 01/05/2008, -2/+12Never forget the fallen that pay our dues for us. It's a price a lot are willing to pay, but it gets higher every time... My hope for his family and friends.
- usrlocalbin, on 01/05/2008, -1/+11I don't think I've ever cried at my desk before.
That was extremely touching.
I'm at a loss for words.
May you rest in peace Andy. - usherzx, on 01/05/2008, -7/+17uh no they don't!?
do you know what rape and torture is?
Yes, I support the military, but those fools we have over their committing crimes can sit their ass in a jail cell for all I care.
Rape is not legal. The young men and women who serve our country have my respect, up until I read about them in the news killing or raping some innocent person for their own amusement. - WebCester, on 01/05/2008, -1/+11The blogger in question was *Major* Andrew Olmsted. He was a military man first and a blogger second.
- CloseTheCode, on 01/05/2008, -2/+10It's a nice touch that he thought of getting something like this prepared. Seems a nice bloke by all accounts, thoughts with his friends and family.
- thescimitar, on 01/05/2008, -0/+8If that were true then all soldiers would be good men. Just like all cops are honorable, all lawyers seek justice, etc, etc. Participating in a vocation does not mean you successfully uphold the ideals of that vocation. I think just about anyone who has been military or worked in any civil service can think of at least a few ***** who are anything but good men.
- SteveIsTheDude, on 01/05/2008, -1/+8Wow, to see it coming like that. Amazing and terrible at the same time. I am glad I do not know when I am going to die and I am grateful to the soldiers who know its coming but keep on going... Amazing post.
- bgale246, on 01/05/2008, -2/+9Maybe it's something to do with the loss of someone they seem to have been close to for 5 years.
- DonRoberto, on 01/05/2008, -1/+8I seem to remember reading in his final post not to use his legacy in a political dispute on either side.
- corevette, on 01/05/2008, -4/+11in the years this "war" has been going on, this has been the saddest thing i have yet to read
a picture of him + another story:
http://blogs.rockymountainnews.com/denver/iraqiarm ...
and one more story for the hell of it:
http://bloggasm.com/interview-with-andrew-olmsted - chrispr, on 01/05/2008, -1/+8It's worth hearing twice.
- onisamsha, on 01/05/2008, -1/+8There's this thing called a save button on many types of word processors that allows one to preserve something and later go back and look at it again. It's really nifty.
Oh and all these crass shots at his choice of including babylon 5 quotes (a show one can only assume the man had a love of) is really similar to insulting the epitaph on someone's gravestone. Classy. - langzaiguy, on 01/05/2008, -3/+9He's being dugg down because Andy requested that his name not be used to further any political agenda.
- alex7575, on 01/05/2008, -0/+6This gives the term "RTFA" a whole new meaning in whole new level.
- Ender008, on 01/05/2008, -0/+6Don't drag Obama into your comment suicide.
- alex7575, on 01/05/2008, -1/+7Picke911,
You not only missed the whole point, but couldn't even comply with a dead man's wish, that his post won't become a political spewfest.
And you even wonder why you don't get invited to parties? - StarlessKnight, on 01/05/2008, -1/+7Their job is to protect the country, which relies upon a Commander in Chief that has the best interests of the country at heart. They cannot pick and choose what missions they choose to engage in--they don't decide "is this really best for my country?" The chain of command exists for a reason. If you're so upset at how the military is used, then hold those responsible for the military's deployment to the fire.
