I think we'l be fine. If anything, I'm afraid of our national debt and our codependant relationship with china. - Arahka, on 10/12/2007, -2/+57As a child of the 80's I am offended that people think that there's something wrong with children of the 80's. I love me and that's all that matters damn it. I'm better than all of you anyway. So there. :P~
- trghpy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+55Whats this have to do with ME?
- Sublime059, on 10/12/2007, -4/+47I knew there was a reason Paris Hilton got so Popular...
But yeah, it was all bound to happen. You cannot take a generation of children and treat them like they are the most important god damn things on earth. The world was going a lot better when children were just treated as little people with no ultra special rights. They are just little people, and there are a lot more where they came from. - Prysorra, on 10/12/2007, -3/+36*Cackles*
Entitlement culture returning to bite itself? - DoctaStooge, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28I agree fully, I like how parents coddle their children and then complain about them being self-centered.
- Bokista, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25My friend that linked me to this article originally said that he could have written this better and then left for Psych 207.
- leer317, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15So THAT's why I have no friends - I'm too good for them!!
- tHePeOPle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Paris Hilton is a bizarre contradiction. She's famous. But how? It's like she's famous, just for being famous. It sorta hurts my brain a little.
- Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21Liberalism is now about preservation of personal freedom at the expense of society. Conservatism is now about the preservation of society at the expense of personal freedom.
It makes sense that college students -- famous for their liberal leanings -- would tend to be self-centered. - stonewaljacksn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Young people who are educated better than ever before+still caught up in the whole "clique" system of adamantly identifying with certain groups lacking cross communication instead of working together=downfall of society.
- jamauss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Kids learn from their parents.
Their selfish, debt-ridden, divorce-on-a-whim, gimme-gimme parents, I mean. - zachblume, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Nukes will be the downfall of society.
But hey....I, for one, welcome MY new overlord. MINE. - DyDx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I'm a pretty good writer (much better than all the other engineers I know), and I see nothing wrong with the writing in this article. It's not technical because it's written for an everyday news source -- don't forget that reporters have to write at about an 8th grade reading level to reach the largest audience possible (I'm not joking.. 8th grade).
It's merely regurgitating the relevant parts of a scientific study -- would you like tables and graphs or something? - Sublime059, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Paris pretty much just embodies the whole Narcissistic young girl culture that is raging in high schools and into Sororities. These girls care about absolutely nothing besides themselves and all look, sound, and act like Paris Hilton. I know there were girls like that before Paris Hilton obviously.. but since she came into the picture, they all got themselves a spokesperson and it then became the coolest to be a vapid *****.
- Yoda716, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Your a not special, you are not a perfect snowflake, we are all a part of the same rotting composte heap.
- haggie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Self-centered parents create self-centered kids.
If you are in college, look at your parents. Is that really how you want to end up? Divorced, SUV driving, materialistic, clueless.
If you are a parent, do you really want to be responsible for creating a Paris Hilton knock-off? - thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Don't you remember the tale of Narcissus? He ended up falling from his former self (known for his beauty, pride, and athleticism) BECAUSE he was so self centered.
Narcissism can lead to a denial of facts because it doesn't support your view of yourself. Fat Slobs that can barely move can be just as narcissistic as the 6' supermodel. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Actually it's more selfish to take away money from others for interests that are only yours. I at least don't expect nor want your money.
- Phyltre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I don't think they'd mind a world of heart.
- Crossmenjeff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9you tell us we're competing for everything and then wonder why we are willing to stab each other in the back to get ahead.
- DyDx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9@strabes: Without at least _some_ governmental intervention in the redistribution of wealth we will end up in an aristocratic state (it could be argued that we are already in one, but that is hyperbole). Trickle down _does not work_.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10they think they're special... oh boy are they in for a world of heart when they get older. the world does not care about you, only what you accomplish.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9The whole thing is ironic: Back then the opportunity for a university education was less and the people who matriculated with these institutions were different in the sense that they really had their heart set on attending them and they knew what they wanted. Today, kids take for granted the opportunity of university and so many are going as undecided majors who just attend to party, drink, and have fun. They don't know what they're doing and certainly do not have their heart set on obtaining knowledge on a college level.
- Slovenian6474, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Ah, statistics....what can't they prove?
- Brian48216, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9As an 80's child, I'm glad my parents raised me on the principles of shame, guilt, and the fact that I will always be inferior to someone else unless I earn the right to crush them under my fist.
Honestly, this whole "I art holier then thou" pissed the hell out of me when I worked retail. You knew the parents taught it to their children and you can always see that parents think their children are far more important then all the rest of the people. - strabes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@Sirocco: Those are the classical definitions of "liberal" and "conservative." I would call my self a "classical liberal" but I am in no way a liberal like the word has come to mean today. "Liberal" and "conservative" have totally different meanings today than they did a couple centuries ago; in fact almost the opposite. Liberals today hardly have the same values as the liberals of the 18th century.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Guys, society got all ***** up in the 1650's, things haven't been the same since. Teenagers even before that, as far back as the 1630's.
- g0rdy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7case in point: American Idol we all see those dorks that think they are teh ***** but really aren't and cant handle the truth.
- Smeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7They push too much of the "give yourself a pat on the back" BS in schools. Some people just think they are "the *****" because of it.
Teacher: Youve failed even the easiest of high school classes, your not going to be the next great astrophysicist.
Student: Ey you cant tell me dat! I can be what I want! - MinisterOrange, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I agree.. perhaps this has something to do with the rise of credit cards and therefore credit card debt. Credit cards feed the "I want it now and I don't want to wait " mentality.
- dshPls, on 10/12/2007, -10/+16Liberalism is more like Communism in respect to people giving out their money for the "greater good." Unfortunatly the reality of communism is that it doesnt work, but with that said, conservative is more about self interest.
- Cylus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Bitching about your taxes paying for welfare is not necessarily selfish. You however, have jumped to an illogical and judgmental conclusion about millions of people.
Welfare can act as a safety net for individuals with no other recourse. On the other hand, it can become problematic when it provides no incentive for individuals to better themselves. Do you deny that many on welfare do not wish to help themselves? Do you deny that supporting someone else for no reason beyond their lack of will to assume responsibility for lives is a legitimate complaint?
Selfish society? No. Americans have an individualistic society. There is a difference. The assertion that someone is responsible for, and in control of their own well being is not a selfish sentiment. It's simply a means of organizing a culture. People may be very generous within that framework, without the coercion involved in a welfare system operated by a government. Look at American charitable donations and this fact becomes readily apparent. - VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It isn't just college students, it's everybody.
- okaroleo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5please lower to 6th grade, i kant understand sum words.
Ups, late for cretive riting. - CBTF, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Then you obviously don't understand the political spectrum.
- codemonkey2841, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It reminds me of the quote from Fight Club about being raised to believe we'll all be millionaires and we're pissed off because we're realizing that we won't. I have a feeling that this up and coming generation won't ever realize that most of them won't amount to anything.
- unclebobscircus, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13Yes, because all of the people who bitch and whine about their taxes paying for welfare - they're not selfish either. We're a selfish society.
- bprice57, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5i would agree to a point, i think self-esteem is good, but i run into a lot of self-centered perople
- surgen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5As far as:
"The new report follows a study released by UCLA last month that found that nearly three-quarters of the freshmen it surveyed thought it was important to be "very well-off financially."
It was my general understanding that a college degree is regraded as the ticket into a higher paying career, so it only follows that college students find it important to be well-off financially, else they would have not gone to college. - anarchyinthekr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6we're self-centered because we're the *****
- p2502, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4as a consultant i say, not much depending on what the cilent wants.
- strabes, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I complain about Welfare and other entitlement programs because I don't think the government has the right to take money from a certain group of people and give it to another group of people. I have been trying for years to find that power enumerated in the Constitution, but I've always been unsuccessful.
- MurderMystery, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Why should I care about anyone else? Everybody is so stupid. I'd rather sit here and listen to my iPod.
♪I don't want to be an American idiot♪ - vypergts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They don't call it MYspace for nothing...
- Sil369, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The world is just a big pile of YouTubes.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Also has to do with the fact that there's no sense of community and family anymore. I swear, it's like today's students enjoy putting others down and instead of helping others making fun of their shortcomings. This sense of community has been pretty much torn apart to the point where it doesn't exist anymore in this country.
- MicheleFloyd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5My thinking on that is so many are just not ready for studies at the university level these days. Partly because we have such a poor education system, and partly because we're pushing kids to go that just don't care. If they don't care or aren't intellectuals, why bother? I know I saw plenty of it when I was in school - 20 year olds who can barely string a sentence together trying to balance beer, babes and what's the third thing? Oh yeah, books! They go into it thinking they're special enough to have it all, and they have no idea what they're in for. We need more affordable trade schools if we keep lowering the bar in our high schools.
- kuzotz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well my college campus is staunchy conservative, and I really hate it. I was really looking forward to the liberal ***** that my cousins experienced durig their college life int he 1990s. Things have changed so much that there has been a huge backlash on being liberal in college, and now all the students are saying they're conservative, and they are praised by adults everywhere for "thinking for themselves"
when in fact only a small eprcentage of them have a valid reason to even be conservative or even know what it means. I'm a liberal with socialist leanings, and I'm black ,and all the other black students think I'm this radical BLACK POWER guy because I have the fro, and the malcom X glasses. - pahoehoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"It's merely regurgitating the relevant parts of a scientific study"
This is fine, so long as the writer is careful not to change what is stated in the original material during their attempts at paraphrasing / regurgitating. Generally, the results of a study are exaggerated or misrepresented for each time the results are relayed. -
