- DukeMojo, on 10/10/2007, -65/+9Well let's just take another step. How do you think nudists feel about us and wearing clothes at all?
- xike, on 10/10/2007, -6/+68Right. Forget the fact that the reason that woman is dressed like that is she would be stoned to death if she wasn't.
- Bhima, on 10/10/2007, -26/+5Like you wouldn't be arrested for being nude?
- DooM, on 10/10/2007, -3/+63Yeah, arrested and stoned are pretty much equivalent penalties. Thanks.
- Bhima, on 10/10/2007, -26/+5Like you wouldn't be arrested for being nude?
- Scynet, on 10/10/2007, -42/+65The woman there only show themselves to their husbands. We all know that and yes, it sounds awkward and maybe even sad. But look at our society now: younger and younger girls are wearing clothes that barely cover their personal parts. Women have to look better and better (i.e. more sexy for men) in fear of losing the battle of beauty.
I kind of envy those people in the pic. They know they have someone special who means the whole world to them, and only reveal themselves to the specific person. It must be a very nice and sexually tense feeling.
You have to look at the flipside. We westerns are so full of nudity that even sex barely means anything to us. No wonder so many people seek strong emotions elsewhere (drugs or a life full of daring and exciting stunts, for example)- rabuksak, on 10/10/2007, -19/+7i wish i could digg you up multiple times for that comment, scynet. kudos.
- svartgotik, on 10/10/2007, -35/+14You obviously haven't lost your cherry yet, have you?
- BigManOnCampus, on 10/10/2007, -14/+32Speaking as someone who's been a nudist, your comment is about as awkward and bizarre as a comment could be. people compete in the beauty department precisely because culture imposes clothes upon us. When everyone's naked, everyone realizes that everyone has faults, noone has a perfect body. You quickly give up trying to look better for looks sake.
"they know they have someone special" ?? omg, I cannot begin to tally how silly that sounds. nudity isn't special, it doesn't mean anything. If you are basing a part of an emotional connection to someone on a physical thing, then you're being just as bad as the stereotypical male who goes down to a bar to pick up chicks to fill an emotional hole in his life. You're effectively saying, "Yes, the physical part of our relationship is like a gift, a currency."
Our lack of shame in displaying our physical bodies is precisely what makes us more enlightened. Shame is a restrictive emotion that supresses freedom much like fear does. You wouldn't look back at Roman society and call them primitive and perverted just because it was normal for people to go to public baths and bathe nude. Likewise it is absurd to say that America is somehow less evolved than the middle east because they display their skin.- skulljar, on 10/10/2007, -4/+4People will compete in the beauty department, clothes or not. Some people will choose to "let themselves go," reguardless. Sorry, I don't need to see your crotch to know that you're a fat slob- a bathing suit reveals quite enough. Anyone who's not a culture zombie knows that everyone has faults. If clothes were illegal, people would be more inclined to exercise. Nudists have no moral highground.
Nudity doesn't mean anything to you? It's silly to think that someone would equate emotional attachment to physical endowment? How many one legged burn victims have you dated lately? Sorry, thinking that someone who admires a persons body does not equate to pigs at bars. Further, what's wrong with a guy who wants to meet girls because he is bored or lonely- even if it IS at a bar? Again, you're "speaking as a nudist" but not proving any moral superiority.
I agree about shame and fear. Romans weren't allowed to look upon eachother's nudity in the beginning. Then as times changed, they were having sex in the baths by the end. - skulljar, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3People will compete in the beauty department, clothes or not. I don't know what places you visited, but even if I go to my local swimming pool I see a lot of people with nearly perfect bodies above average. So strike that "no-one has" and replace it with "many don't have". - BigManOnCampus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"Nudists have no moral highground.

You've altered what I said sufficiently that it doesn't even have the same meaning.
"I see a lot of people with nearly perfect bodies above average"

Reply to 1st paragraph:
Yeah, everyone has faults, but some have a lot more than others, and clothing is the thing that makes people more equal in beaty. We don't really consider clothes as a factor in our search for a companion, like we do with bodies (unfortunate maybe, but that's a basic instinct created mostly by evolution).
Reply to 2nd paragraph:
Nudity means people can compare each other's bodies, and the result is pretty obvious. I too wish we weren't so concerned about bodies, but just look on the wall of any teen, you'll see posters of good-looking idols, not repulsive people. Bodies matter.
Reply 3rd paragraph:
I agree, but again, that's not how things work in reality with 99% of people. And that's why I consider those similiar full-body clothings so good: they equalize the people, and encourage folks to look for other traits than beauty in others. They're not constantly seeing something better walk by. As far as I understood that kind of situation was what you were looking too, but with nudity. But as long as you can remove our instincts and urges, it's not gonna happen.- allywilson, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Hold on... 'And that's why I consider those similiar full-body clothings so good: they equalize the people' - pardon? The only situation in-which that would be equal is if both genders did it, young / old / infant / dead.
Instincts and urges? That's what makes you a human being! - Tiak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1@allywilson
In theory it would equalize the playing field for attractive/unattractive women... Unfortunately, they would have to be able to talk to men for this to work...
There is a difference between complete social equality and equality in a competition, if you aren't a complete moron, it should be obvious which he meant.
- allywilson, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Hold on... 'And that's why I consider those similiar full-body clothings so good: they equalize the people' - pardon? The only situation in-which that would be equal is if both genders did it, young / old / infant / dead.
- MephistoX, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10I'd agree with your topic entirely, except that if that woman went in any other clothing, she'd be imprisoned or killed, or something.
I think your comment would be more appropriate if that wasn't true. Nevertheless, you still have a point there- allywilson, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12To be fair - who's to say she's not in the pacific not 20ft from a California beach?
- BigManOnCampus, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10"clothing is the thing that makes people more equal in beaty."
Wrong. Take your clothes off at a clothing optional beach sometime and you'll realize this just is not true.
"Nudity means people can compare each other's bodies, and the result is pretty obvious. I too wish we weren't so concerned about bodies, but just look on the wall of any teen, you'll see posters of good-looking idols, not repulsive people. Bodies matter."
Wrong again. When you're naked in front of other people, the thing you see is that most of the things you hate about your own body, everyone else has to deal with as well.
"I agree, but again, that's not how things work in reality with 99% of people. And that's why I consider those similiar full-body clothings so good: they equalize the people, and encourage folks to look for other traits than beauty in others. Incorrect entirely. I doubt you really internalized what I wrote at all. imposed clothing means you cannot expose your true self, it tells you to be ashamed of your body because culture would frown upon you if you were exposed. When this is taken to extremes as it is in the M.E. it means that if something like a part of your leg is accidentally exposed, you are subjected to humiliation. That is not freedom, that is a culture controlled by fear. - NozE8, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1Great insight BigMan. I couldnt agree more.
- xike, on 10/10/2007, -6/+68Right. Forget the fact that the reason that woman is dressed like that is she would be stoned to death if she wasn't.
- MrMidi, on 10/10/2007, -67/+50Actually, the women choose to wear clothing like this (and not because they will be killed otherwise, though in the US that is what we hear). Please know about a religion before saying that it is sad. What might not be considered normal to us is perfectly normal to others.
- kunalthakar, on 10/10/2007, -24/+35Why do you think they 'choose' to wear it? Ever heard of brainwashing?
- afx1, on 10/10/2007, -8/+26no
- mithrasinvictus, on 10/10/2007, -3/+46To be able to choose something you have to have a choice first.
And "wear it or be outcast/stoned" is not a choice BTW. - bitspace, on 10/10/2007, -19/+6Because surely if they have a different outlook than you, they must be brainwashed.
- GliTCH82, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7What if that outlook in itself is a result of brainwashing by the type of society they live in? If they could personally choose how to dress, would they grow to like what they are wearing?
In other Muslim countries where veil isn't mandated by the state, many woman choose not to wear the veil and they like their choice.

- HypocriteDigg, on 10/10/2007, -22/+7What's sad is that most 'Americans' think that if you aren't a white, meat eating, christian, dirt-bike riding, gun shooting, redneck, then it's 'sad' to them. Dumb ***** hillbillies.
- Rkocour, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8No what is sad, is that you can't open your own cultural ideas to that of another people because all you see is the stereotypes. I'm American, i am white if you mean that my mixture of ancestory just happens to produce a melenoma affect of my skin of being peach colored. I also like meat, am catholic, like mountain-biking, believe in the right to bear arms, and truthfully i try to relate to other cultures. not by comparing them to mine, as you just compared yours to mine, but by not being ethnocentric and by just viewing the culture as it is through their eyes. Its called taking a sociology class, trying to be more open minded, and not such a pretentious prick. Have a nice day.
- ScrumFritter, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11There's a line between respecting another culture and a ***** backwards belief. Women aren't mens' property, and they shouldn't be treated as such, and they shouldn't be TAUGHT from BIRTH that they are. It's absolutely ridiculous that in the modern world people are still indoctrinating their children with horrendous beliefs that encroach on (well, completely take away) their personal freedoms. She may 'choose' to dress that way at 20 because she was raised to believe (read: forced to believe, under penalty of stoning) that it's right, good point. But then... that's not really a 'choice', is it? It's actually a very long term way of making someones choices for them, isn't it, forcing your ethics on them from birth?
And what's worse is that we make excuses for these people! We say "Oh it's just tradition" or "It's part of their religion/culture!" like that somehow makes it magically right! In this day and age, unbelievable.
And before someone replies with "And who are YOU to judge people?" - I'm the guy that doesn't stone people for how they dress. - Tiak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Note, most American diggers aren't Christian under any stretch of the word, and a large chunk of them aren't white... So, what the ***** are you talking about?...
PS: Being a hillbilly wrong, stoning someone if they were to not wear 15 kg of clothing when they swim, fine?..
- 68024, on 10/10/2007, -19/+4I don't see anything sad about this picture. I only see something sad in your close-minded comment.
- mjj04, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2It still was mad funny
- r1y23, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Actually the entire reason the women cover up is because in Islam it is believed that women should only share their true beauty with their husbands in private. Many women have no problem with it. It is unfortunate though that governments force women who do not want to follow that part of Islam
- barakatx2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Only covering hair is required, they don't have to wear the veils, its not in the Qur'an or anything.
- WaterDragon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Anyone can call it beauty, like repeating a slogan...but I guarantee you, anyone who walks around completely covered, and in black, no less, in the hot desert sun....would have a serious body-odor problem...unless bacteria behaves differently in middle eastern countries.
Misogyny by any other name is still just pathetic misogyny.
And it is not at all different from the rampant sexism and misogyny found in the 'bible', followed by judaeo-christian religions of the west.
Once again, religions are used primarily as a way of maintaining control over the masses, by spreading and sustaining every kind of ignorance and fear and 'belief' in place of rational, discriminative thought. - vvaduva, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Islam doesn't require women to cover every part of their body...only their head/hair. The extremists who kill their women for not covering their entire bodies are literalizing the Koran, just as fundamentalist Christians are doing to the Bible They force their women to do that but they don't have a problem wearing short sleeve shirts and short pants.
- DukeMojo, on 10/10/2007, -65/+9Well let's just take another step. How do you think nudists feel about us and wearing clothes at all?

- h3llscaper, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11The truth?
- Jpesci, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7Smek2, you must be one of those people who pardons any type of behavior behind the safe guise of "tradition" and religious belief. I don't care what a community's traditions or beliefs are, that doesn't mean logic and well-being should be thrown out the window. These misogynistic customs are backward thinking *****, period. As technology and understanding evolves you will see less of it.
- Tiak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You got all that from those couple words?... What?... I saw it as being against customs of being 'proud to be a [resident of country x]". That is, after all, a ridiculous custom which shouldn't be pardoned... Why the hell should anyone be proud of where they happened to be born and indoctrinated?
- kaneh, on 10/10/2007, -22/+7That was a dumb and meaningless comment.

- thailand1972, on 10/10/2007, -9/+2Jeez - people get proud over anything these days. It used to be that people actually did things to feel proud. Now it's what they don't do that makes them feel proud.
- Rkocour, on 10/10/2007, -14/+1I got to say, that really is one of the most ignorant things i have read today. However, i'm going to let it slide. Why, maybe i'm just in a good mood, maybe i'm feeling forgiving, maybe i just hope you learn not to be so ignorant just because somebody makes a different choice than you. Or maybe its because i learnt all this from my church. who knows. Religions don't kill people, people kill people. Apparently though religion is the new scapegoat for hate. Whatever.
- Jpesci, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5It's not about a "different choice". It's backward, antiquated thinking. When a belief or custom infringes on the happiness, respect, and well-being of an individual against their own will, I throw the "tradition" guise out the window, because it's a cop-out to justifying ridiculous or harmful actions upon oneself. Of course it's normal to those within the culture, bu the aspect of normality is irrelevant.
- userini, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6You're going to let it slide? Whew. For a second there, I thought that you would start explaining to us about how religion is good and it's the people who do bad things.
- Bilabrin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1What's the big deal??
They're obviously christians being baptised! - rlee0001, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Well, I guess that argument applies equally well to religion as it does to assault rifles. ***** republican.
- govsucks, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Well, nothing teaches a socialist to keep his hand on his own property like a assault rifle does. I'm starting to think that force is the only thing a socialist will understand, they seem to think everything produced is theirs by simply existing. Who cares if you had to crawl into a dark hole to mine that coal, I was born so you own me! Socialists are funny, "we have a shared society" they proclaim, meanwhile, they hold some people more accountable than most others...the socialist definition of shared is, you acutally do and create, we complain.
- DavidGX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4You'll "let it slide" will you? I don't think you're in any position to LET anything slide, asshole. Buried.

That ***** is equally, if not more, crazy.
- garyeterry, on 10/10/2007, -29/+14Shut up..
- Nowheredan, on 10/10/2007, -14/+93So wait a second... just to be clear here, you're equating a society that allows but does not force consenting adults to sell photographs of themselves without clothing to one that beats, mutilates, or outright murders women for wearing a short-sleeve shirt? Are you seriously making that comparison?
- AladinSane, on 10/10/2007, -10/+2No asshole. He's saying that reducing women to objects is bad no matter HOW you're doing it. But given that this is Digg, and the average I.Q. is about 12, I'm not surprised that you didn't get it.
- JoshChan, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5the key is one nation is free and the other is oppressive. Surely you won't stone the girls to death who sell their bodies in this nation.
- Nowheredan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1No, fool, he's saying that a society that allows women to sell pictures of themselves in a pornographic context without punishment is equally or more crazy than one that forces them to cover themselves under penalty of violence. Read, then write.
- Garbagio, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Actually, You are the one making the comparison of death and torture based on your own assumptions of another society which I'm guessing you have merely heard of rather than experienced. What Smek is talking about is the picture and jokingly refering to the sensationalized observations of brutally uninformed people. In this picture, I see 7 people, of which there are 5 smiling faces and another face covered. There is nothing about laughing at mutilation, beating or murder within this context.
- Nowheredan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1No, what he's saying (in addition to the "don't laugh at them because they're different" bit) is that when radical Islamist countries force women to cover every part of their bodies or else have the crap beaten out of them, it's no worse than when we allow 18 year old consenting adults to participate in pornography. That is, indisputably, what he said. And that is, indisputably, ***** insane.
And you're right, I have never been a Muslim women living in a middle eastern country, but yes, I have read about it from a variety of sources, and yes, it does happen. Not all the time, but far more often than it should (which is never). And guess what: it's better over here. I'm not saying that because I think America's the end-all-be-all paradise on Earth, I'm saying it because we don't let people ***** beat their wives without consequence, and when someone does get away with it it's considered a gross miscarriage of justice.
- rune420, on 10/10/2007, -11/+16I have a lot less respect for western sluts than muslim women. But the problem over there is men oppressing women, the problem over here is just that a large number of women lack decency and integrity. IMO, the former is a lot worse.
- Meatpuppet79, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Let me guess. Swedish/Danish/German/Dutch Muslim, second generation, think its ok to mistreat the 'western sluts' who live around you until you get married to a 'good Muslim woman'

- Gezza, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6I dont think she looks funny, i think she's pretty stupid wearing an outfit like that to go swimming because its impractical and probably dangerous, however, i do generally find the sight of a burkha walking down the street to be in equal parts comical (monty python gang dressed as nuns always comes to mind) and threatening (again - i think its because they remind me of nuns - everyone is scared of nuns).
As an old punk who used to sport a rather large and colourful mohican and lots of safety pins, i can honestly say i know how it feels to be made fun of, ridiculed and generally hated by society - a couple of old ladies even spat at me once (although in punk circles that was usually encouraged), but i stuck to my beliefs and kept wearing my uniform, because i knew that i was in the right and everyone else was wrong, i was fanatical about being a punk, it was my life, every lyric was scripture to me and i worshipped at various punk temples whenever there was a punk band playing there that i wanted to see. I didnt feel safe unless i was with a crowd of other punks (they would protect me from those horrible old ladies), and gradually i lost most of my non punk friends because they didnt understand my beliefs, and i didnt want to hear about thiers.
Then, one day i decided i needed to get some money to buy a car (i would make it the punkiest car ever),so i got a job. Unfortunately my boss made me cut off my mohican and wear a staff uniform but i was willing to compromise so that i could achieve my goal of getting my punk car. It was quite daunting at first being around non punks but i eventually became quite acomplished at fitting in with those non believers, and even found myself buying some non punk clothes so that i could acompany my fellow workers on "work nights out" without causing them too much discomfort, but all the time i was still a punk inside. I still believed.
I am nearly 40 years old now, and i am still tricking people into thinking i am not really a punk. Of course i am sill a punk inside, but i havent worn my uniform for nearly 20 years now. I am a covert punk now. I dont even really tell people i am a punk anymore because they dont seem to believe me.
But i am.
What i am trying to say is that i am glad that you consider the wearing of the Burkha as being similar to "18 year old gitls [sic] selling themselves for pornography", otherwise i would have mistakenly thought your sarcasm was meant to be a legitimate comment.- ff4marvel, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2"I stuck to my beliefs and kept wearing my uniform."

- ConceptJunkie, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Early days? You mean when they were being fed to the lions for just being Christians? Do you have any idea what you are talking about?
- blackjack75, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It wasn't called catholicism when they were being fed to the lions in the roman empire. At that time they were simply called jews. Christianism was still in formation while the western roman empire existed.
And seriously you don't have to go back to the middle ages to find christians abusing the power that religion gave them over people. My parents were raised in Franco's spain and according to them the catholic church wasn't worth more than the saudis moral police. That was like 50 years ago, not centuries.
The only reason christians are "reasonable" today is that we kicked their ass, several times, until they calmed.

Not saying I expect my next date to be a virgin, but it would be nice to know she had not had sex with men she was not in a long term relationship with.

You know we have different cultures. It's what makes us different people. I don't see unusual cultures from places like Ethiopia being called into question where they stretch their necks with jewlery and put plates in their lips - that could be considered far more insane, but no.. because Muslims are current the focus of the infamous "war on terror" suddenly everything they do is weird or oppressive or backwards in some way.

I totally disagree. The culture (both civil and religious) is based on the pre-concieved notion that different sexes have different rights.
I reject this. This isnt ethnocentrism or xenophobia or any such nonsense. Human rights are universal and any culture that doesnt recognize this needs enlightenment.
This is true REGARDLESS of geography, colour, religon or culture. Thousands of years of human philosophy and reason have lead us to this truth.
You can shove your PC apologetics up your ass.

I'm still wondering where the hell these farging men find the gall to do this to women. It's not in the Quran as far as I know. They're such backward savages they must hide their women or fear that someone better or worse might take them and have sex. Because that's all these arsewipes think about, the physical and tangable world.
72 virgins in heaven.......give me a ***** break.- rauldeandrade, on 10/10/2007, -11/+4I used to think just like you, but it doesn't work exactly as you think it works in this culture. - AnteChronos, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4There's a huge difference between viewing women as "a piece of meat", which a small segment of the population of the US does, and being required by Sharia law to *treat* women like "a piece of meat". Basically your fallacy held beliefs cause you to make judgments, usually flawed ones, of another culture.Take a freaking anthropology class.

- slyzxx, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1gee lets make fun of other cultures but when people make fun of yours lets see the uproar. and at Macgyrl64 yes it is actually says that a woman must be covered from head to toe and to the wrists. now covering the eyes is a womans choice. that stops potential adultry. No wonder arabia have few cases of aids and HIV or std`s.
- felchdonkey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1While Saudi Arabia does not keep accurate count of HIV infections in their country, doctors have estimated that there may be as many as 80,000 cases, or 0.3% of the total population. That's right between the rate of about 0.45% in the United States, and 0.1% in the UK.
In Saudi Arabia, however, many hospitals refuse to treat AIDS patients, making the mortality rate much higher, and of course, the life of someone suffering from AIDS there is far worse.
Here's a quote about the general rate of infection in your beloved Muslim world:
"The notion that this region has sidestepped the global epidemic - perhaps due to strict rules governing sexual behaviour - is not supported by the latest estimates, which indicate that 68,000 people acquired an HIV infection in 2006, bringing the total number of people living with HIV/AIDS in the Middle East and North Africa to an estimated 460,000."

You need to join the modern world and realize that superstition medieval attitudes towards women isn't going to save you. - mithrasinvictus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1http://www.thebody.com/content/world/art9030.html
