  • atish505, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1This is not confined to Yemen. Child marriages exist in Indian subcontinent (although in India you can be prosecuted if proven to marry a minor, and marriages cannot be registered if the girl and boy are under 18).

    In US, we saw the polygamist compound (and many more communities exist where underage children are married).

    Regardless of what geography or region these exist, it is an inhuman practice and should not be tolerated.

    We should do what is in our means: create awareness, education, political pressure, diplomacy ... to put an end to this evil.

The average age of marriage in Yemen’s rural areas is 12 to 13... Hard-line Islamic conservatives, whose influence has grown enormously in the past two decades, defend [child marriage], pointing to the Prophet Muhammad’s marriage to a 9-year-old. Child marriage is deeply rooted in local custom here, and even enshrined in an old tribal expression: “Give me a girl of 8, and I can give you a guarantee” for a good marriage.
