- inactive, on 11/13/2007, -1/+97Judging how Digg handles breaking news, is it safe to assume that Britain is underwater by now?
- romistrub, on 11/10/2007, -8/+43Oh for *****'s sake. Sometimes it's just the thought that counts. Really, it is. You ***** *****.
/militant atheist - rainierez, on 11/10/2007, -0/+25The story linked to now reads:
"Clean-up begins after east coast of England escapes tidal wave 'by inches'" - oldhick, on 11/09/2007, -2/+21Please don't promote your intolerance and bigotry.
- Otto, on 11/09/2007, -0/+17I love this digg story: "in 12 hours" followed by "Submitted: 22 hr 6 min ago".
BTW: It didn't do much damage. - hiPpymIck, on 11/09/2007, -0/+15update..(- about as unexciting as you can get)
Britain's sea defences came within "a whisker" of failure today as the worst tidal surge in more than half a century battered hundreds of miles of coastline.
At the peak of the tidal surge, waves were lapping just inches below the tops of the walls designed to protect tens of thousands of homes from floods on the East Coast.
While most seawalls held firm, minor defences failed to keep out the sea.
In the Norfolk village of Walcott, storms breached the seawall, bringing misery to a housing estate. - ColorBlind, on 11/13/2007, -14/+26Our thoughts and prayers are with all in it's path.
- URnotheonly1, on 11/09/2007, -0/+10MY GOD it's coming right at us!
Looks like I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue. - lcmatt, on 11/09/2007, -0/+7old news, it failed to happen although the seas did get rather choppy.
- Navicerts, on 11/10/2007, -0/+5Tidal Wave: Often the name incorrectly identifying a tsunami; tidal waves are the extremely long period waves driven by the forces producing the tides.
- alexg05, on 11/09/2007, -0/+5Old news, here's a more up to date article about the situation. Risk has now passed, no major damage has been caused.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7086280.stm - ipaiba, on 11/09/2007, -2/+6At least the seawalls did their job, for the most part. Different situation, but they could have it a lot worse (like New Orleans re: levies) if their seawalls had failed.
- inactive, on 11/09/2007, -0/+4I only have a segway... soo.. thats it for me.
- absolutroot, on 11/09/2007, -0/+4disagree, the IT crowd is from england
- Patrickdnj, on 11/10/2007, -0/+4Hey, I live in NJ.......Why does everybody think NJ is a *****.....Well, maybe because if you are coming from Newark Airport, or NYC, you see all the factories that smell like *****. Other than that, NJ is awesome!
- slonrgjon, on 11/10/2007, -1/+4COWABUNGA!!!
- absolutroot, on 11/09/2007, -0/+3alot of people seem to be miscontruing what a tidal wave or tidal surge is. its not just one huge wave, but a rise in sea level. keyword being "tidal"
- deuceswilde, on 11/09/2007, -0/+3There's a difference between a sea wall and a levy but mainly a large portion of New Orleans was under sea level and England is not. There might have been flooding had the sea walls failed but it would have been nothing like what happened in Katrina.
- absolutroot, on 11/09/2007, -0/+3water becomes dirt brown when it is washing away topsoil.
- AdmiralJimbob, on 11/09/2007, -0/+3I think we can stop digging this now.
- inajeep, on 11/09/2007, -2/+5That pic of the surfer looks like he's surfing in sewage. Damn the New Jersey's ocean looks better than that.
- ColorBlind, on 11/10/2007, -0/+3Please note the time my comment was written. Thanks.
- britblogger, on 11/09/2007, -0/+3dugg for:
"Villagers spent the night in the pub..." - Navicerts, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2SuperWinner: So which type of person do you perceive ColorBlind as? A molester or a brain washer, maybe both? It is pretty clear from the comment they made you are probably correct.
/sarcasim - undy242, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2Ok; so submitted 22 hours ago, happening in 12 hours, 5 hours behind for U.S. ET time and we get....I give up. Hope all goes well if it hasn't happened yet U.K.
- Morky, on 11/09/2007, -1/+3Oh no! What will this do to the iPhone launch!?
- oldhick, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2Sure it is. I don't think fat people are anything but fat. What I do think is that people have the right to believe what they wish to believe. I'm not sure how you decide to focus your anger and hostility on someone who obviously was trying to be empathetic and show support. While we may dislike people of faith and disagree with their views, here it was you who was the *****.
And the Webster definition of bigot is: a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices;
That would be you. - paulg2000, on 11/09/2007, -4/+6Crap. Well, you can outrun it as long as you have a scooter!
- BinaryFragger, on 11/09/2007, -1/+3nospinhere: At least they were prepared for the worst.
Storms are common but you never know if will barely make a puddle or if will destroy a city. Just look at New Orleans and Sumatra. The evacuations show that we learned our lesson. - Humptydank, on 11/10/2007, -0/+2BREAKING: U.S. Gov't Says Katrina to Be 'Mild Inconveniece.' FEMA Says to 'Get Surfboards and Enjoy.'
- crapmatic, on 11/09/2007, -1/+2"In the Norfolk village of Walcott, storms breached the seawall, bringing misery to a housing estate."
That sentence is so characteristically British. But as with all British storms, this storm shall likely be dreadfully sorry for its untimely landfall and shall ring next time. - inactive, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1The sky is falling. ...ops I guess not:"<
- thomashauk, on 11/10/2007, -0/+1That part is pretty low and flat.
- ScienceDoc, on 11/09/2007, -2/+3Buried...darn those predictions...
- inactive, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1Dugg for the Yaris!
- weeeezzll, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1"Residents push a shopping trolley full of sandbags along the seafront in Great Yarmouth"
That has to be the strongest shopping cart in the known universe. Those sand bags are like 50 lbs. each at least. By my count that is 800 lbs. (16 bags). When I go to Home Depot to pick up rock salt for my water softener the 6 bags (300 lbs) i pick up makes the cart sag, and it is pretty difficult to maneuver in the parking lot. - daveFelton, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1People have returned to their homes, all is well.
- ipaiba, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1Excellent point! I assume the Netherlands is pleased that the wave wasn't headed in their direction.
- linksus, on 11/10/2007, -5/+6LOL @ TIDAL WAVE.
Its a small storm surge from low pressure up north and high tides at the same time.
It caused MINIMAL problems.
The thames barrier has been closed again tonight, But i cant see it being a big problem. - GeekyGerge, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1" Record high waves, but Dutch dikes pass test - Summary"
Dugg for that alone - Navicerts, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1Maybe unexciting, but a good thing!
- Bleachers7, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1Yep. Posted 22 hours ago. 12 hours until destruction. Made popular 57 minutes ago. They're staring at Nemo by now.
- qpn6ph9q, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1Hello, what about the Dutch? They live along the English Channel too ... and 1/3 of their country is below sea level as it is. A tribute to their incredible engineering and gigantic sea defense systems allowing them to escape 10m high waves with only minor flooding; unlike 50 years ago when a similar thing happened and 2000 people drowned. http://www.earthtimes.org/articles/show/139220.htm ...
- Chirp08, on 11/09/2007, -0/+110ft != 10m...
I've seen bigger waves from fat people at the beach... - ColorBlind, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1Aw, you guys really do appreciate it deep down. Don't lie.
People really do care about whether or not you die under 10 feet of water. - ColorBlind, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1I'm not religious, but thanks for trying. It was merely a few nice words you took the wrong way.
- spawnfree, on 11/10/2007, -0/+1or run away from a big wave.
- gettarat, on 11/24/2008, -0/+1Looks like I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue.
http://homedepothours.com/ - inactive, on 11/10/2007, -3/+3It about time we all got militant about religion, its been destroying humanity for thousands of years and it has to stop somewhere. EXCUSE me for being AGAINST molesters and brain washers. ***** you too.
- gtblake, on 11/09/2007, -0/+0"In the Norfolk village of Walcott, storms breached the seawall. Many residents took shelter in the local pub."
They really have their priorities right across the pond. -
