- inactive, on 04/06/2008, -6/+72This is one of the most disturbing things I've ever heard! The Chinese Government must be more than crazy... You really have to fear them.
I didn't know a lot about Tibet until I recently stumbled upon this article http://www.globalpolicy.org/nations/sovereign/sove ... I'd really recommend this for everyone.
The fact that most of the Western countries are silent about this human rights abuses shows clearly how much these governments care about human dignity. I were not surprised if similar things would happen in the West in the not so distant future.
I for one am not going to watch the Olympics. - inactive, on 04/06/2008, -3/+38Sorry, here's the working link: http://www.globalpolicy.org/nations/sovereign/sove ...
- sanman, on 04/06/2008, -4/+25So how much does Beijing pay you to post bullsh*t?
You do know that they're pretty much a capitalist police state now, don't you "comrade"?
They got rid of the socialism, but kept the authoritarian control. Sort of like the infamous Chilean economy, isn't it?
But you're totally rentable, so you don't care, right? - mentallyinhell, on 04/06/2008, -1/+22Something I've noticed about "rights" is you only have them until the government doesn't want you to.
- digitalpencil, on 04/06/2008, -4/+18Hundreds of thousands of Tibetans protesting peacefully for the independence of their land have died from torture, starvation and execution under the military arm of the PRC. This is their land, they were ill-equipped to defend it from the Chinese and consequently, lost their freedom of speech, religion and lives.
I'm sick to death of you idiots jumping on topics like this and Anonymous protests, labeling them 'bandwagons', arguing that everyone should chill-out.
***** that! People are dieing and your lack of concern is the reason. - moletimer, on 04/06/2008, -2/+13You think thats the most important issue raised in this video? You're retarded if you only take that out of this video and ignore the oppression and human rights violations the Chinese government are doing to the Tibetan people. Just because of their beliefs doesn't make this any less sickening or important. People are people, regardless of beliefs, and the Tibetans need help from the international community. They need OUR help, to pressure the Chinese government to stop killing and detaining innocent people.
- inactive, on 04/06/2008, -7/+18Ah just like the Soviets invested in Eastern Europe.. you know, in between massacres.

- cgoodwin, on 04/06/2008, -2/+11What a great way to distract the world from the disgusting behaviour of western governments. Iraq, Guantanamo, most of war torn Africa. We've got such a great history of f'ing up other countries for our own benefits. I'm not condoning what goes on in Tibet, I'm sure much of it is horrific, but we need to get our own houses in order before taking the moral high ground. Half a million dead, millions displaced, who knows how many injured in Iraq - absolutely disgraceful. Then torture... good God we are all damned for our inaction at stopping our own leaders.
- inactive, on 04/06/2008, -2/+10[ Insert one of the numerous epic 1984 quotes ]
- digitalpencil, on 04/06/2008, -3/+11Yes, they do.. and most of the western world believes in a creator deity who lives in the clouds blessing and smiting individuals based on how well they behave.
It's no less retarded than this and who are you to mock their belief? - rezist, on 04/06/2008, -2/+9thanks!
- imtitoxxx, on 04/06/2008, -4/+11People need to see these things!! this is ridiculous.

- GoneFishing, on 04/06/2008, -4/+10Here is a run down of some of the history... ( no citation, take my word as it is)
1. 1950's, China and Tibet both agreed to have Tibet under China as an independently run government. (sort of like the Hong Kong S.A.R. today). This was all more of a strategic military to move to ensure China's southwest is safe and Tibet will be under protection if necessary.
2. China decide to exile the Dali Lama (which is like exiling the Pope, for some that need a perspective) to strengthen their control over Tibet. Again to ensure the stability of southwest China.
3. Dali Lama travels and talks during exile, and wins a Nobel prize during the peak of cold war, or peak of western hatred toward communism (USSR, China). (Please keep in mind, those on the Nobel committee are the same fools that gave out economy prize to risk investment theories that significantly contribute to the failing of economy today. Another story for another day perhaps.)
4. Now in the 50 years of governance from China, Tibet is opening itself up to many business. Tourism has boomed and is bring unimaginable economic wealth to the region. Many of the long term infrastructure investments are starting to pay off, and people are just pleasantly living their lives. Compared to Tibetan run, where monks could have multiple wives, poverty flooding the area, and prisoners forced to beg on the streets as part of their punishment. I would call China's rule a vast improvement.
5. In 2007, Dept. of State removed China from their list which reported countries with the worst human rights practices.
Summary. China did something wrong in the past 50 years ago, in a time of post war, were much stability was needed. However, China has changed since then, more specifically, in the last 20 years. Nowadays, you hear all the amazing development going on in the country.
Thus I ask you, during the course of economic growth and rising quality of life, will you still stand by your idea of independence of Tibet? A decision that will cause the same kind of conflict and chaos as most of us has recently seen in the news. I know I can not. To ensure the pleasant living of many and the continue growth in the region, that is large virtue.
However, many seem to think that all wrong must be undone. While true it was China that started the problem, I would call freeing Tibet only a small virtue. Both being virtuous acts, but with different degrees of impact to the world. Can you still choose so lightly? - sanman, on 04/06/2008, -3/+9How do Chinese treat Tibetans?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgMcCYs1hmc

Stop being tools of imperialisms, naive people. - Demorest, on 04/06/2008, -3/+9You people really need to educate yourselfs.
http://www.michaelparenti.org/Tibet.html
Here, a source you can't blindly dismiss as Chinese propaganda - inactive, on 04/06/2008, -2/+7The Chinese Gov't does this with all religions. They have Catholic Churches in China, but they're a sham to superficially show the world they have freedom of religion. The Pope doesnt select the Catholic authority figures in China, the Chinese gov't does. Also the Chinese Catholic church DOESN'T recognize the pope... even though it's pretty much what Catholics do.
- mikee1680, on 04/07/2008, -1/+6We need to fix what's happening here first before we worry about Tibet.
- an0nym0uz, on 04/06/2008, -0/+4what people need to see, especially americans, is the war in Iraq
- funkyjunk3, on 04/06/2008, -3/+7You only point out the maligned rioters in a sea of other, completely peaceful protests. How many thousands peaceful but protests are you glossing over?
- mindless4ever, on 04/06/2008, -3/+7Free Iraq first if you really care about human being.
It's so unbelievable that citizens of countries that invaded Iraq and killed hundreds of thousands people think they are morally superior.
Better find a good mirror, and look at yourself, because speaking up. - youtellme8, on 04/06/2008, -4/+8Time after time science fiction writers' and futurist writers' ideas become parts of humanity's reality.
- lurkerz, on 04/07/2008, -1/+5Why must China meddle in the religious affairs of Tibetians?
China installed a fake Pachen Lama. What happened to the true Pachen Lama choosen by His Holiness the Dalia Lama? He was a mere 6 years old when the Chi-coms took him away. Next they installed a fake Pachen Lama. Now they are gonna do the same thing for the Dalia Lama.
This is ridiculous. - ryuujin, on 04/07/2008, -0/+4Sorry guys, you have things a little backwards. See, what happened here is your typical cop crushing after a protest turned riot. It's not a China thing, it's not a Tibet thing, it's just a human nature thing.
When people get together anywhere, the united states, china, tibet, england - anywhere, and in any position, but especially when they have power like the cops, they feel empowered by the group. Then, when a few people inevitably start violence, the rest tend to follow extremely easily, especially if bolstered by the supposed moral strength of their cause. In this case, the tibetans turned a protest into a bloodbath. You can't make up multiple angles from multiple people and multiple sources of hundreds of people destroying ***** and hurting people. Just because western media doesn't show it because of their hatred of communism doesn't change the facts.
And when the cops came in, they did the exact same thing, only they've got billy clubs and a feeling of god-given authority to bolster their beatings rather than a notion of national identity. Doesn't matter who the people are or where they are, it happens in the USA, in Europe, anywhere you see a protest turn violent, because that's just how it goes. They can be entirely nice people who wouldn't even believe themselves capable of it. It's groupthink, it's human nature. - inactive, on 04/06/2008, -2/+6http://www.boingboing.net/2008/04/04/vlog-xeni-tib ...
- jkleinfeld, on 04/06/2008, -4/+8So, I was just at Trafalgar Square in London a few hours ago as the Olympic Torch came through
One thing that struck me was how the Chinese apologists would use their extremely large flags to cover up the few Tibetan protesters at the event. The first guy I saw came in holding a sign saying on one side "These games are SICK" and on the other "Justice for Tibet should come first" - and within minutes there were a group of Chinese (for lack of better word) thugs who were obviously mirroring the Chinese g'ment's stance on free speech. - ZephyrNinety, on 04/06/2008, -1/+5Doubleplusungood.
- electracer, on 04/06/2008, -0/+4I wonder who dropped the first atom bomb. I wonder who financed Bin Laden and the Taliban to fight against the Soviets in Afghanistan. I wonder who sells weapons to Israel, thus actually supporting the England meddling. I wonder why so many Muslims hate the US. I wonder why the whole world knew Dr. Khan didn't sell nuclear weapon technology to Saddam except the US. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abdul_Qadeer_Khan
- electrocuting, on 04/07/2008, -1/+4Lets see what Noam Chomsky has to say about this
Noam Chomsky: I doubt that there is much in the way of useful analogies, in this case. Maybe I’m missing something.
Seems to me there is a much closer analogy between the Palestinian occupied territories and Tibet right now. There are dissimilarities too. Thus, rightly or wrongly, Tibet is internationally recognized (by the US too) as part of China, so what is happening there is internal. In contrast, outside of Israel (and in practice, the US), no one recognizes the OT as part of Israel, and in an authoritative judgment, confirming early Security Council resolutions, the International Court of Justice determined that the Geneva Conventions apply to the OT, so all settlement activity is in violation of international law, as are all measures (like the “separation wall”) to protect settlers (the US Justice concurred). However, despite the sharp legal distinction, there are some instructive parallels that can be explored.
Take the recent US-backed Israeli violence in the OT and Chinese violence inTibet. The former is far greater, and the justifications far weaker. Just imagine how the US and Israel would react if Palestinians in illegally annexed East Jerusalem were to burn down a bank and Jewish stores, attack Jews, etc., as in Tibet We can then compare the actual reactions. In the case of US-backed Israeli violence and illegal actions in the OT, overwhelming support for embattled Israel. In the case of Chinese violence in Tibet, much grandstanding, as when Nancy Pelosi — an enthusiastic supporter of Israeli violence — declares passionately that if we don’t stand up for Tibet we will lose our “moral authority” (she didn’t explain on what that authority rests).
One can proceed — that is, if one is interested in truth and justice and immune to shrieks of horror and a deluge of brickbats.
http://www.jwharrison.com/blog/2008/03/29/chomsky- ... - electracer, on 04/06/2008, -0/+3I never said I hate the US, I would just like to show the other side of the medal. The same way, there is another side of the medal in Tibet. Rioting monks, that attack police, destroy buildings and cars and hurt innocent Chinese citizens should be something that shouldn't exist, like hot ice for example. Violent riots like this would be beaten down in a similar manner all over the world or should the governments look away? There is and there always was wrongdoings by governments all over the world and history. But instead of always criticizing we should show solutions. A free Tibet is definitely not a solution, its not realistic and a move in this direction will result in high costs and low or no returns. I just can't ignore if media only shows the truth it prefers and people follow these "truths" without thinking. I can see you have made your thoughts and I appreciate this. You changed some of my views about what European media suggests about Americans ;-). By the way, where would I be without America? On planet earth...the world will keep on turning.
- walugi, on 04/07/2008, -0/+3Why would white america be interested in anything that isn't 100% Anti-China?
- natchiketa, on 04/06/2008, -2/+5what ***** is going on here? who dugg this link down? that was a perfectly legitimate link
- inactive, on 04/06/2008, -1/+4I'd like to see you back that up. Protests tend not be let's be buddyroo affairs. Any survey of Lhasa would reveal the extent of the violence. But would the facts matter for a person like you? Of course not.
- inactive, on 04/06/2008, -1/+4well, if America gives Hawaii independence, then I'll jump on the free Tibet bandwagon...
- cgoodwin, on 04/06/2008, -2/+5Ok... so... how many dead in Iraq? Half a million? How many maimed, disabled for life? Who knows. How many refugees? Millions. Woo we're leaving Iraq. China is so bad. Narf.
- sanman, on 04/06/2008, -3/+6Here, watch this, everyone:

We should all feel bad. This was very tragic and moving. - jingwei, on 04/06/2008, -2/+5This is getting out of hand.
- inactive, on 04/06/2008, -1/+4"We need all forces available to force the Chinese government to stop this repression in Tibet."
Let's put this in perspective. Let's say the Chinese were to begin protesting the 400 years of actual genocide and social marginalization that the Native Americans have undergone. How would the American government react? - inactive, on 04/06/2008, -7/+9Of course, the Chinese could take their roads, hospitals, schools, and economies with them and totally leave Tibet. Bring back the Dalai Lama and reinstitute a feudal slave system. Whose the one violating human rights then?
- inactive, on 04/06/2008, -2/+4The Chinese have been in Tibet since the Qing Dynasty. For the sake of comparison let's use the Good Ol' US of A. Let's see marginalization of native peoples? Check. Economic development and improvement of quality of life? Check? Brutal genocide? Believe or not, there aren't death squads roving the streets of Lhasa. There were however active attempts by Americans to wipe out the Indians.
- walugi, on 04/07/2008, -1/+3"Hawaii doesn't want independence, Tibet does.
China sucks ass."
Haha, so typical. Americans. Blind to the injustices done by their own people, but they have a hawk's eye for the fault's of others.
You're telling me that no one in Hawaii wants independence? If there was a protest by Hawaiians would the US government give it to them? hahaha - AlienMushroom, on 04/07/2008, -1/+3The pictures linked were taken from anti-cnn.com.
Some links may not work properly. Just go to anti-cnn.com for more details. - walugi, on 04/07/2008, -1/+3Haha, so you got proven a retard then you attack him for trying to make things convenient for you. Way to go, you're a genius.
AlienMushroom: Finally someone smart about the whole Tibet thing. I applaud you. - inactive, on 04/06/2008, -0/+2"...Isrealis would be left if we trusted muslim peace treaties..."
LOL the UK and USA _created_ Israel in yet another example of a preemptive war - OropheR, on 04/06/2008, -1/+3That is a good point actually. But this is happening today, and we can do something about it.
- walugi, on 04/07/2008, -0/+2God you're suck an idiot.
You think the world would collapse without the US. You also imply that you would've wiped out the whole of Japan? haha, just like you wiped out the whole of Iraq, Afghanistan and Vietnam? Tibet would be a blind cripple without China.
It doesn't seem like there is any legitimate reason for America to own Hawaii. haha - dinostabOMG, on 04/06/2008, -1/+3I doubt the Chinese government would allow that.
- walugi, on 04/07/2008, -1/+3Declare war on them then.
Oh wait, you're already fighting a few and losing. You have practically no international support. You're scared ***** less of Russia. You're in debt as anything. You're facing recession. Sounds like if anything, China will be ***** you. -
