- repins, on 12/01/2007, -31/+395More madness from the "Religion of Peace"
- inactive, on 12/01/2007, -13/+214A cult of barbarism and insanity . . . in any civilized society, a child giving a teddy bear the same name as his own would be considered cute (if considered at all) rather than an act of heresy by his teacher, punishable by death.
- wright3279, on 12/01/2007, -20/+196Can't we just understand it's a difference in "cultural values"?
Seriously don't those in the muslim world realize how utterly ridiculous it makes them look? 7th century mindset. - markerman, on 12/01/2007, -20/+188And they keep trying to convince us non-muslims that islam is not a violent religion?
- tantrim, on 12/01/2007, -24/+173When will we wake up? The Muslim world hates the non believers and want us dead. If a Muslim comes to this country and parades down one of our main streets waving the Karon we might not would even notice them but if you were to travel to their country and managed to smuggle a Bible in you would be stoned to death.
- nyn8tv, on 12/01/2007, -10/+101Regarding Ms Gillian Gibbons:
This is the most absurd thing I have ever heard and people wonder why so many in the Western world have difficulty accepting Islam or even trying to understand it.
The charges against Gillian Gibbons have been blown so out of proportion it makes one feel Islam is filled with nothing but intolerant fanatics. Ever since the attacks of 9/11, Islam has been often looked at with disdain.
Muslims in the US felt like they may be singled out and targeted for hate crimes, yet much was done to make sure nothing like that would happen. I have Muslim friends and they are shocked and appalled at the charges not only brought against Ms Gibbons but are outraged that she is imprisoned and more outraged there are idiots out there calling for her death! What kind of society is this?
Ms Gibbons obviously set aside the comforts of her Western lifestyle to give her all to teaching the children of Sudan. In an effort teach about the voting process, she gave the children the opportunity to name a stuffed animal. They chose the name “Muhammad.” This is a popular name and where is the insult? It’s a stuffed animal that children the world over love!
Where was parental involvement in teaching these children it is not appropriate to name a stuffed animal “Muhammad?” Why didn’t the children know better?
OK…you want to be stickers about this…then consider it an innocent cultural gaffe and get one with life.
Frankly, I admire Ms Gibbons for wanting to be there in the first place and for her to be treated in such a heinous manner is atrocious.
Ms Gibbons should not be incarcerated, she should not have been charged in the first place. The possibility of being lashed 40 times is an outrage and a human rights violation.
How dare people converge in central Martyrs Square chanting, "No tolerance: Execution," and "Kill her, kill her by firing squad." What kind of mind thinks like this?
How dare cleric, Abdul-Jalil Nazeer al-Karouri denounce Gibbons saying she intentionally insulted Islam and state, "Imprisoning this lady does not satisfy the thirst of Muslims in Sudan. But we welcome imprisonment and expulsion. This arrogant woman who came to our country, cashing her salary in dollars, teaching our children hatred of our Prophet Muhammad."
Ms Gibbons evidently came to your country with the intention of offering her services to help educate the children and there’s no doubt she left behind much comfort and ease to live in Sudan as she may have felt compelled to work with these children and it seems she enjoyed doing so. One would think a country would welcome such open service and willingness to forgo the comforts one is used to.
Rest assured though most in the UK will hope this absurd situation will not raise tensions between Muslims and non-Muslims; how could it not?
At least some Muslims in the UK are speaking out. Muhammad Abdul Bari, secretary-general of the Muslim Council of Britain, accused the Sudanese authorities of "gross overreaction."
"This case should have required only simple common sense to resolve. It is unfortunate that the Sudanese authorities were found wanting in this most basic of qualities," he said.
The Muslim Public Affairs Committee, a political advocacy group, said the prosecution was "abominable and defies common sense."
Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, spiritual leader of the world's 77 million Anglicans, said Gibbons' prosecution and conviction was "an absurdly disproportionate response to what is at worst a cultural faux pas.
Cultural faux pas occur all the time. People apologize, apology is accepted and you move on. In the United States there are myriad cultures living together or amongst each other. Don’t you think mistakes are frequently made? Yet no one calls for lashings or the taking of a life. What kind of society is in the Sudan? It is insane!
This is all very sad. My paternal Grandfather was originally from New Delhi, India. He was Muslim. He was a PEACEFUL man and very understanding of those around him and RESPECTFUL of other’s religions and beliefs. He was not the intolerant fanatic so many Muslims appear to be. I can truly say my Grandfather would be appalled at the treatment Ms Gibbons is receiving as it goes against everything he ever believed in.
I was always told Islam is a peaceful religion. So explain to me why it is filled with so much violence and the willingness to inflict violence.
All I have to say is if Ms Gibbons is harmed in any way, may the wrath of the Western world fall upon you and I assure you there is no doubt it will. - relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -2/+76Its a bear, its a ***** stuffed BEAR.
- blackhawk919, on 12/01/2007, -19/+92I'm sorry but your point just doesn't stand. You can't even compare what the people in the streets of Sudan are doing to the WBC. First of all the Westboro Baptist Church has somewhere between 50 and 150 members. They are completely marginalized by everyone in our country. There are 1000's of angry people mobilized in Sudan and they are calling for blood. And some of them, perhaps many would tear that poor woman limb from limb is they had the chance, and again there's no comparison to the WBC (who by the way are despicable people).
You are right and it's good to point out Muslims opposing the punishment, but unfortunately in this case they are the minority. I for one do need to hear more of that though, much more of that. - krytpo, on 12/01/2007, -8/+79Even more confusing: Why is a teddy bear named "Muhammad" considered an insult to Islam, while murderous terrorists named "Muhammad" are not?
Could it be because Muhammad was a murderous seventh century warlord who told his followers throughout the ages to wage war on the rest of humanity "until they feel subjugated" and that Islam is not remotely a "religion of peace" at its core? - philliesphan026, on 12/01/2007, -3/+70It's beyond irrational that these people are reacting like this. This whole story seems like it could have been written as a story on The Onion... Yet, pathetically, it's all too real.
- eanderson543, on 12/01/2007, -4/+68I find it interesting that having children name a toy Muhammad is considered an insult to Islam when hundreds if not thousands of terrorists have the same name. At least the toy bear is not a threat to anyone. Insanity!
- inactive, on 12/01/2007, -9/+73Madness!? This Is Islam!
- downs1, on 12/01/2007, -54/+109How ludicrous! The Sudanese Muslim regime is systematically killing Christians in Darfur and the world does nothing. Now a British teacher is in danger of being executed because she allowed one of her students to name a teddy bear "Muhammad". Once again, the lesson should be clear to those liberal theologians, and "politicians" who contend that we (Christians) worship the same God as Islam does. We do not! In Islam there is no such thing as "mercy," "forgiveness," "grace," or "love" for that matter. These are the characteristics of the One true God, who has said, "You shall not kill." Islam seems to kill its own and others without blinking an eye. May our God deal righteously with the Sudanese Muslims who are calling for this hideous atrocity!
- vetolongwene, on 12/01/2007, -11/+56i say we crossbreed a wild boar with a dog and call the hybrid breed a "Muhammad".
(Then come up with a good recipe for it, and flood their food markets.)
Their blood-thirsty intolerance comes straight from the wild. - maiku00, on 12/01/2007, -2/+45Its unbelievable that we live in a world where there are places so diseased with madness and ignorance.
- norman619, on 12/01/2007, -6/+49This is on par with the mass call for the death of the cartoonists a while back. Sorry but people keep trying to say the majority of these people are sane peace loving people. So far they keep proving the opposite is true. Sure not all of them are like this but as we have been shown a very large portion of them actually are what I would call rabid animals.
- Difranco1911, on 12/01/2007, -7/+50LOL.... I just dropped Muhammad off at the pool.
- Marijuana, on 12/01/2007, -22/+63Religion is stupid.
- socokoolaid, on 12/01/2007, -12/+50These Neanderthals should be erased. To imagine a toy given the most common name in the world. I name my poop Muhammad.
- skeletonkeeper, on 12/01/2007, -6/+43islams answer to everything seem to be simple to behead everybody. So this loving religion will now behead you over the wrong pants, the wrong name for your teddy bear, and will basically beat you to death for being in the wrong place at the wrong time and being raped.....such a loving religion. When will the world get sick of these animals.
- SIRBERUS, on 12/01/2007, -4/+40It's sad to me that you would point out a person "overlooking" details in an article, only to come back with a completely invalid point.
I mean, let's just take your point and run with it...
Let's pretend that every muslim was one which acted as those begging for murder. Now let's pretend every Christian was a WBC psycho.
You now have one group that kills people over naming a teddy bear and drawing comics, and another group who hold picket signs and do nothing more than cause an annoyance.
Crazy Christians are just not equal in any way to Crazy Muslims in this day and age. - cfuse, on 12/01/2007, -13/+48All religion is a vector to violence and stupidity - we no longer believe the Earth is flat, so why should we believe other clearly absurd concepts. If you really want to believe the Earth is flat, then go ahead - but if you want to cause violence and start wars over it then think again. You have no right to do that, no one does. You worry about yourself and I'll worry about myself, you mind your own business and I'll do the same.
I am sick to death of muslim apologists. Islam, as it is practised by most of the world (ie. the poor and disadvantaged) is a religion of hatred and violence - where are the acts of kindness, charity or forgiveness? Nowhere, because it's all about stupid people burning flags, firing guns in the air, oppressing others, blowing themselves and others up, and various other perversities in the name of their deity.
Always I hear the cry "There are muslims denouncing this" and you know what, that's a load of crap. It's always someone making excuses (like you have), never someone saying "It's wrong" or "They made a mistake". No responsibility is ever taken, it's always someone else's fault - the west, christians, etc.
I live in Australia, after the Bali bombings there has been plenty of coverage of the bombers literally being patted on the back by their jailers and statements of support from the Indonesian clerics. These muslim murderers are held up as examples of the righteous - are you seriously trying to claim that is reasonable? The Indonesian government is frequently reported making anti-christian, anti-western, and anti-Australian statements but are the first to cry racism and religious oppression when anyone says anything even remotely critical of them. They also weren't shy about accepting aid from christians and Australians after the tsunami, but unsurprisingly they were back to their old tricks within weeks.
A while ago, the 'moderate' mufti of Australia gave a sermon comparing gang rape victims (who were specifically targeted because they were Australian by lebanese muslims) to uncovered meat to a cat (it's worth mentioning at this point, one of the victims was on the way to a job interview and was dressed as such - hardly 'uncovered meat'), stated that the rapists weren't really at fault, and stated that had the victims been locked away in their homes like muslim women are then everything would be fine. He was grudgingly relieved of his duties after an avalanche of public disgust made it plain to the muslim community that they would be in a very dangerous position if no action was taken. As usual, there was a bunch of muslims making excuses for this vile man. If this is what a moderate cleric does in a first world country then what hope is there for those in the third world?
Since you won't say it, I will: This judgement is wrong, and these people are wrong. Whilst they continue with their savagery there will never be peace between them and others, and that, in this case, is their fault - they need to change their behaviours and stop making excuses. Islam, as practised by the majority of it's followers is an exercise in hatred, violence, intolerance and oppression - it, and all other religious hate movements need to be extinguished. The world is far better off without throwbacks to the bronze age - we can travel into space and these mongrels are inciting hatred over a stuffed toy. Idiots. - myotive, on 12/01/2007, -4/+38I'm really confused, and perhaps someone here can assist me, but why is it considered bad for children to name a teddy bear "Muhammad" but good when a man named Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr., a member of the Nation of Islam, is renamed to "Muhammad Ali?"
I see, thanks to Wiki, that Cassius' name was formally changed by Elijah Muhammad, and perhaps there is key difference...
Juliet - "What's in a name? That which we call a rose By any other name would smell as sweet." - blackhawk919, on 12/01/2007, -14/+45Their behavior is not distinct to the Sudanese people, it is certainly behavior that has already been well displayed before by many other practitioners of the "Religion of peace". It gets harder and harder and almost becomes ignorant to consider this loudest voice of Islam an extremist fringe.
- V1ncent, on 12/01/2007, -5/+35How can one nuke people into the stone age when that's where they are already?
- masterc, on 12/01/2007, -2/+31So they can name their kids Muhammad and it's okay? Hypocrites...
- ricree, on 12/01/2007, -3/+31I agree with the sentiment, but how many people does it take before something can no longer be considered the fringe?
- kooft, on 12/01/2007, -47/+75You overlook a story replete with example of Muslims opposing the Sudanese punishment (some calling it absurd and even quotes from Sudanese Muslim clerics that would accept the 15 days of prison and expulsion) and instead brand the entire religion as bad.
Do you also believe that Christianity is best represented by the Westboro Baptist Church? Because that's what these guys are to Islam. - Sil369, on 12/01/2007, -3/+31How would they react if I take a toy/animal and make a 30 second YouTube video of it - where-as I give it the name "Muhammad" in it.... are they gonna parade in streets? Run into trains in protest? Go on a plane to track me/the toy down and kill me/it? DDOS YouTube?
- dougbell, on 12/01/2007, -5/+33I've changed my dicks name from Dr. Octoclies to Muhammad.
- BuckeyeDon, on 12/01/2007, -1/+28The teacher just let the children pick a name that they liked. How can that be any offense, let alone warrant calls for execution. The children picked the name; do they want to execute them also? Such vile hatred.
I see the protesters as the ones doing evil in Mohammed's name. It is odd how many followers can call for death for this teacher's action and for a cartoon, but are silent when other Muslims blow up mosques, killing worshipers praying to Allah including blowing the Koran to bits.
The calls for this teachers death is evil and the offense. Also on other acts of Muslim hatred, if we could see our creators face and as well as the devils when a suicide bomber blows up a bus full of women and children, I do not think it is our creators that would be smiling but the devil himself would be smiling. Muslims need to take back their religion from the death loving killers that do Islam a grave disservice. - naturemade, on 12/01/2007, -4/+31"The protesters called for Gibbons' execution, saying, 'No tolerance: Execution," and "Kill her, kill her by firing squad.'"
Ah yes, I remember the last time I hit the streets chanting something similar to this because I disagreed with a religious belief... Oh wait, I disagree with Christians on almost everything in their religion BUT I'M NOT CALLING FOR THEIR EXECUTION. Anyone who can defend this on any level is out of their ***** MIND.
Note: Not only do I disagree with Christians, Republicans, and I can't stand George Bush so PLEASE don't try and paint this as a neo-con agenda. This is a human rights issue and if you can't see it you are ***** retarded. - KSchurig, on 12/01/2007, -8/+34So much for the religion of peace and tolerance.
- inactive, on 12/01/2007, -3/+28A difference in cultural values. You say that as if it's a preference for tea over coffee. Any 'cultural value' that insists on killing people over the name of a toy is simply put, insane. Its believers are mentally ill, and certainly not civilized, and deserve in the long run to die out as a people. There's no love in their hearts, only irrational hatred in the name of a symbol. I wouldn't miss them if a plague from 'god' came along and wiped Sudan from the map.
- IllBeBack, on 12/01/2007, -2/+25Really? When was the last time either of those groups called for the execution of someone for doing something they considered wrong? And then took to the streets looking like a bunch of *****? I would say it's WAY more ridiculous.
- somespecial, on 12/01/2007, -4/+26"many armed with clubs and knives, rallied Friday in a central square" and nobody was arrested?? WTF
- jellygraph, on 12/01/2007, -0/+21WBC have extreme views, but to their credit they don't call for someones death, they only say that they will face punishment from god and other absurdities, like linking the war in iraq to homosexuality. also, their numbers are very very small and the country is outright hostile to these people.
This is not an isolated case of muslims calling for the death of someone. remember the muhammed cartoons?
islam may be a religion of peace, but it seems a majority of its followers believe the opposite. - richness, on 12/01/2007, -1/+21these people are simply not thinking clearly... Pull out. Run away! Let the crazy fundamentalists create their own ruin. This is a disgrace. WAIT, the children named it, are they going to execute them??? I really don't get the fascism... Who decided on the "naming" ?
- naturemade, on 12/01/2007, -4/+24No no no. This is all the fault of us intolerant Americans! Damnit don't you see what you intolerant people have forced these innocent and helpless people to! Christ people stop forcing them to lash teachers and rape victims!
Here is an interesting aside though: the N.O.W. (National Organization of Women) has refused to come out and take a stand against this. What happened to the feminists? - virtualball, on 12/01/2007, -1/+21And the crazy train keeps on rollin' :P
- rubikon, on 12/01/2007, -2/+22you sir, need to look up the definition of the word replete. I would have said it was replete with examples of the opposite, with a smattering of moderation for good measure.
Me, well I just couldn't help noticing that the article's main thrust was yet another temper tantrum on the muslim "street" over a genuinely innocent and truly harmless gesture, a mistake no less! Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia is putting gang-rape VICTIMS in prison, and sentencing them to lashes! ..and where are the protests there? how about here? where are the riots, the call for death to Saudi?
right.
But nonetheless, here you are, defending these ignorant fools, defending Clerics who would ACCEPT (?!) a sentence of 15 days in jail (JAIL!) for a teacher who let her student, a child, name a teddy bear Muhammed.
are you for real?
I'd recommend a longer sentence for your particular brand of stupidity myself.
I won't even bother with the comparison between the pathetic Westboro Church and the worldwide disease of Islamism. - djvchris, on 12/01/2007, -6/+25But how many of these Christian nutjobs (other than the WBC) are calling for a woman to be killed because of a poor stuffed animal name choice?
- mrASSMAN, on 12/01/2007, -1/+20black people don't choose to be black.. people do choose to be part of religious cults.
- tdl007, on 12/01/2007, -7/+26We hear so much in this country about parental involvement in our kid’s lives. Where were these Islamic parents in teaching their kids that naming a doll after their “Prophet Muhammad” would be inappropriate?
- inactive, on 12/01/2007, -5/+24 So where are these peaceful muslims, condemning this heinous fanatic part of their supposed religion. There has been one authoe a female who has spoke out loud and in print against this fanaticism, only one. The rest can't wait to find an excuse to sue , to entrap, to use our laws against us, to kill us, , I will not beleive that all muslims don't want us dead until they come forward in the media , in person in vast groups and actually preach , that they do not kill and want peace without lopping off our heads.
- Comp1demon, on 12/01/2007, -2/+20Call me racist, intolerant - what ever you want.
This is crazy. This teacher should be allowed to go home.
These people are stupid and barbaric in how they feel about what she did.
The fact she even got jail time is appalling.....
And shame on the UK - I'm sorry - this isn;t Iran, Iraq, Syria - were talking about the Sudan - yes I'm sure people from the UK that work there are tolerant and open to their Muslim faith - but they are there HELPING and they do something these people interpret as worthy of DEATH.
Goes to show that any first world nation shouldn't even bother to help these people.
If i was the UK prime minister - I would DEMAND I get my Teacher back, straight away, with no harm to her - and If i was told no - she has to play out their law and order interpretation of the society she was working in - I would respond "NO SHE DOES NOT" give her back now - send her home or I'm gonna walk in there and take her back myself with 1000+ armed UK troops.
I agree - the Muslim faith needs to EVOLVE FAST and have the tolerance of western religious cultures. If they cannot evolve then they need to be wiped off the face of the Earth. PERIOD.
This is another example of the animals that live in this world. - Chaoticfist, on 12/01/2007, -3/+21I named my toilet Muhammad. I feel so good every time i use him to.
- jmbillings, on 12/01/2007, -18/+36It's things like this that make me think the world would be better off without religion, full stop. The amount of pain and suffering caused over hundreds of years simply because of differences in belief is truly shocking. The ironic thing from my point of view, is that there is NO god whatsover - so all the deaths are simply for nothing. I don't know what causes people to have the need to believe in some higher power - why can't they be comfortable as-is? In any case, I'd not mind if they just believed quietly and peacefully, but no, they are always trying to force their beliefs on to others and destroy anyone who won't play ball.
- Dewhead, on 12/01/2007, -3/+20but the girls will get twice the punishment because they are only worth half of what a man is.
- DiscoLando, on 12/01/2007, -3/+20Karon? Isn't that a light syrup that is yummy on pancakes?
