- carrtoonist, on 03/30/2008, -2/+40Whoever wins this game will be the country that learns to change the way they live and consume things. Imagine if, instead of going to war, the United States spent all that money on research and technologies that made industries more efficient?
- freezeout, on 03/30/2008, -2/+28does this mean Canada will finally get to be a superpower? they've got lots of water plus all that untapped oil.
I for one welcome our new Canuck overlords and would like to point out that I've always liked Brian Adams' early work. - Garmr, on 03/30/2008, -2/+20"I would also like to know why the hell George Bush needs a 98,000 acre ranch in Paraguay, just purchased for him by his daughter Jenna acting as agent, and located adjacent to a newly established U.S. military base which just happens to be atop one of the world's largest stores of fresh water, the Guarani aquifer." - John Pilger, "Iran: The War Begins!
- SemiSarcastic, on 03/30/2008, -2/+18not to prioritize, but if anything water should come first. Because whats the point of driving an SUV if you die from dehydration before fulling enjoying that in-car DVD player and iPod plug-in?
- Spytap, on 03/30/2008, -0/+9I remember talking to an ex-CIA guy about 5 years ago who told me that "Oil almost doesn't matter anymore. Over the next 25 years the biggest natural resource will be fresh (as in "not salt") water. Wars will be fought over water."
I remember thinking at the time that he was crazy, but we'll see. Maybe he knows something we don't... - Cryptocracy, on 08/17/2008, -1/+10he who controls the spice girls, controls your television
- saxreturns, on 03/30/2008, -0/+9It was a book first! Although I love David Lynch's work, the book is so much better.
- saxreturns, on 03/30/2008, -1/+10What's that in the sky? Is it a bird? Is it a plane? NO! It's the point of the article, flying over your head.
- bearebel, on 03/30/2008, -2/+11And while they are busy turning their corn into diesel, which by the way uses lots and lots of water, what are we going to be eating?

- oOLiquidNightOo, on 03/30/2008, -6/+13i've read in some underground forums that the lesbian dentist cartel is trying to control the world's oxygen supply. it's gonna make this oil/water thing look like a holiday.

- kero552, on 03/30/2008, -0/+6Anyone can make drinkable water from sea as long as he has technology and energy. Oil can be extracted only from selected places.
Of course, there is a matter of quantity, but oil is more pressing matter. - Jawoodyablowme, on 03/30/2008, -0/+5Not potable water. Here in the South Eastern US, we're already having "water wars". Court battles with other states as far as who can take how much water out of the Chattahoochee. We're on a strict water ban - no outside watering.
The Western part of the US has been dealing with this longer than we have. It's only going to get worse.
Canada has a lot of both: water and oil. Time to invade and liberate them? - inactive, on 03/30/2008, -0/+5Come on, I know you want Quebec nuked, don't lie...

- CerMakAlot, on 03/30/2008, -1/+5This is nothing new for anyone who has read about peak oil. I think the guy is overly pessimistic though, there are things we can do the ease our oil demand. The industrial age isn't over. We will just have to become more creative. The trick is that people would rather kill for oil than change their lifestyles.
- decker12, on 03/30/2008, -1/+5All I have to say about the headline is... no *****!

/ Canadian-Jedi mind trick - dhughes, on 03/30/2008, -1/+4 We can't sell water according to NAFTA since once we do it's open season on all the water here.
But certainly, buy our oil it's better than those other guys oil, and we get along with everyone ;) - inactive, on 03/30/2008, -0/+3Older Brian Adams MIGHT be ok...but there's no excuse for Celine Dion, Alanis Morrissette, and that funny guy from Full House!
- jmignea2, on 03/30/2008, -0/+3We definitely don't have any water or oil up here in Canada ;)
Move along, move along. - joeanon, on 03/30/2008, -1/+4You mean FOOD and WATER.
Energy can be produced with coal and there is much more of it. Oil is just one of many fuels people... get a grip on that concept.
North America is in the best possible situation in the long run of food and water supplies, plus we are most easily defended compared to our competitors.
We should secure South America and their biofuel industry and closer borders. Asian is a giant death trap when we have a global downturn.
Solar energy ALREADY has the capacity to move us off fossil fuels. We are simply fueled into consumable fuels instead because the profit model is easier for companies.
Many new battery techs will turn transport electric, there is no doubt, the internal combustion engine is a failure. It waste 75% of it's fuel as expelled heat. It breaks much faster and has several times more moving parts. We must move to efficient electric engines and dump billions in battery tech.
Biofuel could NEVER possibly provide enough fuel without displacing all our cropland. It's nice to reclaim waste matter, but electric provide total energy diversity.
You can make electric with coal, hydro, wind, solar, nuclear, gas, wood, biofuels, and geothermal among others and then simply plug your car in.
So, NO... oil futures will not stay high. In 5 years we'll have electric cars all over the road and quality lithium ion batteries. In 10 years we'll probably have super capacitor batteries.
The cost of gas is driving this technology like never before and until now we simply only had minor need of better batteries. The small lithium ion in todays laptops and cells phones are good enough for most our uses. Fuel cells are good enough for NASA uses, so better battery tech isn't far away, it's just we've not been paying much attention to the field until fossil fuels went up in price..... pretty dumb strategy, but that's sheer supply and demand without intelligent regulation.
Climate change means most asian and european flooding. North and South America will raise in relative power if climate change continues.
Biofuel causes food prices world wide to go up and the US probably has more food capacity production than any other country. High oil price also mean higher export prices on US agriculture. However, most nations will not develop electric cars, but ALL nations will continue to eat.
In the long run we are merely experiencing a bump in the transition from gas to electric transport. Hydrogen was not a smart investment because it didn't offer any short term solutions like electric cars which have been around since at least the 80s. Fuel from waste material and biofuels are now our transition since we didn't get electric ready in time..
However, in the big picture electric is far more sustainable and costs less per kilowatt than any other fuel other than perhaps your own wood/coal powered car or waste material car.
Thin-Film solar seems to be a major solution to many of our long term electric needs, as does thermal solar. We need to buy buy buy China's Iridium supply. Canada and China have the supplies the resources the make the next generation of low cost solar panels... the US and Europe have the technology along with likely Canada who is a major player in the world resource market and thankfully the 51st state.
All in all. The US's consumption may have turned the global economy to ***** a few decade faster, but we are still the best off to weather the storm. Our population is stable, our food and water supplies are huge and unlike most nations WE have a lot more room for energy savings since we've had the lowest price to fuel ratio for many years.
If we use 25% of the worlds resources, than things like energy efficient appliances and electric cars will boost our economy more than most nations. American's are just, for their wealth, very uninterested in efficiency and reducing energy waste.
This is just the lesson we needed to drive the importance of efficiency and minimalism into American's minds.
Higher food prices won't hurt obese American's because most of the food is a domestic product, so either you go without or you pay American farmers more.
The energy is the real problem since the money goes to foreign nations, as do spending sprees on cheap walmart goods. If American's could become more informed consumers, we would save billions per year and we would increase the quality of our goods and lower their cost of ownership creating more money in the economy and more exports. - inactive, on 03/30/2008, -3/+6Could Canada stop the American Military? What is yours is ours.
- lotsa1s, on 03/30/2008, -2/+5I think, in the coming decade, the issues of renewable energy and energy independence will very quickly morph in the popular mindset from an environmental issue to one of national security. Ironically, the vast fields of solar collectors and wind turbines that dirty, dreadlocked, pot smoking hippies like my self fantasize about may be nursed into existence by our military industrial complex.
- inactive, on 03/30/2008, -0/+2only if electric cars could go more then 50 miles. could you imagine an electric semi going 10 ft? wouldn't work.
- saisumimen, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2"I get rich while you run in place."
(rolls eyes) - michaeljd, on 03/30/2008, -1/+3Duuuuh, don't they know he who controls the spice, controls the universe. Worst article evar.
- Robbothehood, on 03/30/2008, -0/+2Canada was actually just one place out of being granted veto power when the UN was formed. After WWII, Canada was the sixth most powerful country in the world. 2.??? 3. Where'd our army go?
- BossKey, on 03/30/2008, -1/+3"Canada has a lot of both: water and oil. Time to invade and liberate them?"
Before the century is out, don't be surprised if the Canadians are the ones buiilding walls and security systems to keep illegal immigrants from fleeing north across the border, except the illegal immigrants will be the newly poor Americans driven from their water- an oil-starved cities. And fleeing the farms of the Midwest, desertified by climate change, while Canada's territories may boom with new grain harvests. - dhughes, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2 ...or I guess that should be 5 against 187.
- desuexmachina, on 03/30/2008, -1/+3Necessity is the mother of invention. We've had a pretty good run with this cheap energy from oil, we've made a lot of leaps in other fields because of it. I find this fear-mongering about the end of the world because of no oil pretty annoying. We're humans, we'll just find something new and adapt to using it. Of course, fear sells papers faster than hope.
- inactive, on 03/30/2008, -4/+6Having a strong economy and industry means having a strong military to defend it. The reason we are not allowed to "progress" into cleaner energy, i.e. Nuclear Power, is the left (the neo-commie environmentalists kind) refuse to let us. France has proven nuclear power is clean and safe. It's not the government that should be investing money in making industries more efficient, it is the industry. You don't think industries want to be more efficient? Efficiency equals profit! The problem is you guys think all this "green" energy is more efficient, when it is not. Biodiesel uses more coal burning energy to create it then it would be to have regular fossil fuel gas in your car. The "green" movement, although might have some good hearted people in it, is made to be a cash cow. It's fake, like Valentine's day!
