Please bump this comment, just in case my main server gets strangled! - goofygarber, on 01/31/2008, -3/+34This has already been on digg, twice.

Help by linking directly to metacafe, not embedding it into your site. However, its commendable what you're doing and you don't have any ads so I didn't bury. - sundancekid503, on 01/31/2008, -1/+31Call me cynical, but I think the last thing a homeless person needs is another mouth to feed. Instead of giving him money and a dog, why not assist him in finding employment? That is the ONLY possible chance he has for turning his life around. With the level of publicity you've already gotten, couldn't you leverage this to find just one person willing to give him a chance at employment?
Even 40k will disappear really fast unless he learns to make lifestyle changes. Does Diego want to work and support himself? - Nekiruhs, on 01/31/2008, -1/+18Aren't all iPhones on lifeless corpses?
- nepawoods, on 01/31/2008, -1/+16Not to be pedantic, but this isn't an example of the butterfly effect.
- inactive, on 01/31/2008, -1/+14Having worked with the homeless off and on for about 25 years as a volounteer, I can tell you that the worst thing you can do is support their lifestyle. The best way to support their lifestyle is to give them free money.
The best way to help homeless people (as in most effective) is people who take them in and rehabilitate them. But those are the ones that can be rehabilitated. The second best way: fund organisms that develop solutions for homelessness instead of giving money to homeless individuals who make the worst possible use of that money (alcohol, drugs, they can't get food for free from shelters, they're not stupid).
A vast portion of homeless people suffer from mental illnesses that remain untreated because of their lifestyle. They can't get a job because they are homeless, they are homeless because they can't get a job and they lost their job because they have mental problems.
The main source of homelessness is a lack of lifetime support for people who suffer from mental illness. Mental hospitals will release patients once it is estimated that they are not a danger to themselves or to society. But that doesn't mean they are able to provide for themselves. It's only a matter of time before they run out of money and can't get medication.
So my advice to people who want to help the homeless: offer your time and money to non-profit organisms who will maximize the value of your help for the greater good. - cbabraham, on 01/31/2008, -0/+13Does anyone else find it ironic that the slogan for the host of this site is "unmetered bandwidth" while the very page that slogan is on says "It seems your account is currently using too much CPU / Memory time. Please note: that this page will be automatically removed as soon as the load decreases for your site. "
- maxpower2911, on 01/31/2008, -3/+15No
- rossnyc, on 01/31/2008, -2/+14They look like able bodied people...I'm sure there is a McDonalds or something where they can sweep up and make a little.
- nepawoods, on 01/31/2008, -1/+12"since it's about apparently unrelated events leading to each other. Granted, the strings of causality are not unnaparent"
If the strings of causality are not unapparent, then they're apparent. If the causality is apparent, then they are not "apparently unrelated events". - MusicalGenius, on 01/31/2008, -1/+11I can tell you how the internet would save the world. By everyone getting off their lazy butts and impeaching Bush. It's like people just don't care anymore.
- sockpuppets, on 01/31/2008, -1/+11Maybe he found an iPhone on a lifeless corpse.
- jmpeagle, on 01/31/2008, -0/+8maybe he's posting from a public library
- heypetray, on 01/31/2008, -0/+7I'll fund as many organisms as possible. :)
- inactive, on 01/31/2008, -6/+12I'm poor and it can be argued that I live in a *****, where's my money? I formally declare shenanigans.
- Whaines, on 01/31/2008, -0/+6"Unmetered bandwidth" says his host, lol.
- tynos, on 01/31/2008, -6/+12Great idea. Great project. What's not to like?
Spread this around.
It's amazing how these people can adapt to their circumstances and carve a semblance of decency out for themselves. You know the old saying - "Home is where the heart is"
I see this kind of makeshift homeless home around my city sometimes.
I hope people in Paris rally round for this guy and find better shelter for him. Let's hope Lucchina is able to get him a dog at least. Someone please throw a tarp over his living space there so he doesn't have to put up with the wind and the rain. - Aurabolt, on 01/31/2008, -0/+6HostUCan't
- stackered, on 01/31/2008, -0/+5Thanks Digg. This homeless guy is going to die now because you pwned the website. Good job.
- inactive, on 01/31/2008, -0/+5Lets hope the money goes for noble causes like the poor ,needy ,disabled and not to some frauds and religious freaks.
- Slices, on 01/31/2008, -4/+9You're rich enough to hang around the internet posting messages in Digg.com, so you shouldn't complain about your misfortune.
Besides, keep in mind this is not about saving the world from poverty. It's just about helping this homeless guy get some money, simply by watching a short video of his creative non-house. Furthermore, it's about showing that real charity can be made without a huge effort or expense, nowadays! - Slices, on 01/31/2008, -6/+11With all due respect, I believe this is the kind of story that should be allowed to hit the front page 20 times! Also, please keep in mind the embeded videos also count as views in Metacafe, so if this article gets popular, there will be another burst and hopefully more money for Diego!
By writing and promoting this story, I'm hoping that more people will be alerted to what's really at stake! If we could really get enough views to get this person a real house, I think it would be highly symbolic of the true potential of the internet, hence the focus of my article. - thebaron2, on 01/31/2008, -1/+6And I'm not how it works in Paris, but at least in the US having a paying job would go a lot further to getting a mortgage than 40 grand in cash that was just a gift. At least the guy can rent for awhile, but if the goal is to own a home he needs a steady stream of income for someone to fork over a sizeable loan.
Either way, I'll digg it for the principle and I watched the vid. Good luck! - SubjectiveC, on 01/31/2008, -0/+5Server's down. Digg Effect hates the homeless.
- chickentonight, on 01/31/2008, -0/+4Sounds a lot like child-support payments to me. :-/
- 919kwjc, on 01/31/2008, -0/+4This would help you more!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SdKQKovdP3E - nitsnipe, on 01/31/2008, -2/+6this deserves a CRIBS EPISODE
- chingy1788, on 01/31/2008, -0/+4doesn't wordpress die easily?
not a very reliable mirror.... - smithil, on 01/31/2008, -2/+6I always ignore the homeless on the streets, so I think it'd be hypocritical of me to help them online.
- georgemason01, on 01/31/2008, -2/+5Horrible looking blog...becoming very annoyed...cannot focus on article...tab closed.
- Slices, on 01/31/2008, -2/+5Sounds like a good thought to keep in mind for subsequent efforts! Thankyou!
- skyshock1, on 01/31/2008, -0/+3Can I choose the country whose homeless I can help?
- MusicalGenius, on 01/31/2008, -0/+3Impeachment is still important. We have to have Justice against the man and we have to show other countries that the U.S. isn't completely dead.
Otherwise when everyone regrets this, you can be on the guilty side for all I care. Those who aren't trying to fix our problems are only contributing to them. - j4200, on 01/31/2008, -0/+3Absolutely. I've said it time and time again that it doesn't matter if a story is on the front page again. Just because you've seen it once that day, doesn't mean everyone else who is only on digg in 20min periods will see it. This has to be the least classy front page dupe call I've seen. I consider them all claims from the kind of dweebs who think 'American Pie presents Band Camp' is quality drama; This guy especially, just really raises the bar to a whole nother level. Too bad the event is limbo.
- roosterjm2k2, on 01/31/2008, -0/+3I would watch it...but i dont really care about homeless french guys.
- Slices, on 01/31/2008, -1/+4I bet you're an engineer. -_-;
- j4200, on 01/31/2008, -0/+2America is not the world. The Internet had nothing to do with when America impeached Clinton. Why would the way it's all ways been done suddenly be in direct consequence to the Internet this time? This kind of shallow reasoning to every American's, on both sides of the arguments, conclusions is the primary source of FAIL in your country.
- Gonasadude, on 01/31/2008, -0/+2Was that a blowup doll at the end of the 2nd vid?
- NotOptium, on 01/31/2008, -1/+3What happens if you can't watch the video because it's down? Who are you helping then?
- govsucks, on 01/31/2008, -0/+2The enlightened nation of France with all its numerous social programs has homeless people?
- LUCCHINA, on 01/31/2008, -2/+4Lol... Thank you ConradDanger.
And a Big Kiss to you from Paris ! - LUCCHINA, on 01/31/2008, -4/+6Yes, goofygarbers's, i confirm views is counted as views on Metacafe.
Slices is doing that to help more. It's very kind of him. - Whaines, on 01/31/2008, -0/+2What about frenching homeless guys?
- skyfire1, on 01/31/2008, -0/+2Now I don't really feel like watching it. If you said "Amazing Video: Must Watch!!!111!!" I would consider it.
- zheisey, on 01/31/2008, -4/+6cool story
- Nobiting, on 01/31/2008, -2/+4Looks like the website is homeless now.
- inactive, on 01/31/2008, -0/+2LOL!
- ShaneMcDeath, on 01/31/2008, -2/+4Dont forget about www.freerice.com. I still go on there every day. It's nice to make it part of the routine.
- WNW3, on 01/31/2008, -1/+3Better yet, can I choose a country to ship the homeless to?
