- markristaino, on 08/25/2009, -2/+259"Port au Prince, Haiti, and an hour from the airport -- I was able to negotiate for a 10-year-old girl [for $100]"
that's ***** up... - fury420, on 08/26/2009, -1/+169"Since he was a child, he and his family and his children, along with the rest of the enslaved villagers, took huge rocks out of the earth. They pummeled those rocks into gravel for the subgrade of India's infrastructure, which is the gleaming pride of the Indian elites.
They further pulverized that gravel into silica sand for glass. There's only one way that you turn a profit off handmade sand, and that's through slavery."
damn, handmade sand?!? - eramos, on 08/26/2009, -31/+170I know, I wouldn't pay a dime over $75
- victorycig, on 08/26/2009, -3/+85While there are more slaves now than at any time in human history, it is also probably the smallest proportion of the world population ever in slavery.

- inactive, on 08/26/2009, -3/+69This ***** is ***** up.
- TheBead, on 08/26/2009, -3/+64I thought France was the first to abolish it in 1780.
- iceman0113, on 08/26/2009, -1/+56And this is the world we live in. gg humans.
- jaykoo21, on 08/26/2009, -2/+52England gave us aid against the Confederacy because we finally followed their footsteps and banned slavery with the Emancipation Proclamation. America's great, but not necessarily the most progressive.

- Santad, on 08/26/2009, -0/+49"The saddest aspect of life right now is that science gathers knowledge faster than society gathers wisdom."
— Isaac Asimov - PlatinumOGKush, on 08/26/2009, -6/+51Highest overall population as well? Not saying slavery is right and should therefore increase with population. I just feel that's gotta have an impact
- nepidae, on 08/26/2009, -5/+50failure?
dude you are almost instantly communicating with over a billion people. - bringitontimx, on 08/26/2009, -0/+42The parties are quite different from 150 years ago.
- msanstail, on 08/26/2009, -5/+46I like what this person says about how he doesn't consider sexual slavery to be any more horrible than general slavery. He finds all slavery abominable, and it doesn't matter what kind.
I like that thinking. Morality depends on your actions, not the subject of your actions, and clearly he understands that. - smemily, on 08/26/2009, -0/+38I read the comments first and then the article. I assumed sex with her was sold for $50. I could never have guessed that $50 was for permanent possession. :(
- untreadatom, on 08/26/2009, -5/+41In Haiti, Disney is making massive money off of the back of slave wage earners (13 cents per day) to make all their apparel. When the president (a priest) tried to increase the minimum wage, so that these types of tragedies would end, he was forced out of his house in the middle of the night at gunpoint by US special forces and secreted away to the Congo. We are all complicit here.
- 519crad12, on 08/26/2009, -10/+44bad call, dude. really bad call
- Lavarock, on 08/26/2009, -5/+38To be fair there are more people than ever. They're a lower percentage of the population. If we span this arm of the galaxy with trillions of enlightened intelligent people there's going to be more slaves then.
- victorycig, on 08/26/2009, -0/+31Penelope, England was instrumental in starting and then ending the slave trade.
And don't think there aren't slaves in the US today. - untreadatom, on 08/26/2009, -1/+32http://www.democracynow.org/2005/2/28/the_haiti_co ...

- inactive, on 08/26/2009, -1/+26Money.
- aks123, on 08/26/2009, -22/+46We really are a failure of a species. Who gives a ***** if we can build skyscrapers and travel to the moon when this still happens.
- Misinformant, on 08/26/2009, -3/+26Pass a 4th grade history class and try again you ***** idiot.
America was one of the LAST countries in the world to abolish it. Britain was prepared to help the Confederacy fight against the Union during the Civil War as a way of getting back at us for the War of 1812 and ultimately decided not to because they refused to ally themselves with a slave-owning nation (the CSA, the Confederated States of America). The south might actually have won with England's help. They came dangerously close even without it. - victorycig, on 08/26/2009, -0/+23There was so much party switching back then that the names don't really have much relationship to today's parties.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Party_switching_in_th ... - opticwind, on 08/26/2009, -5/+26You know what? You really piss me off. You come in and take an article about legitimate slavery and, like the fool that you are, compare it to paying your God damn taxes? What is wrong with you?
The only person needing perspective is you. You don't know half the ***** they go through in their lives but you're more than happy to think, with nerve, that paying taxes is the same. Oh no, lost some cash? They don't get cash. They don't get "health care", they don't get the freedom of speech you use, they get a bullet in their head for acting up or sold at a market. Many of the women as sex slaves to be raped.
Go. *****. Yourself. - spawnfree, on 08/26/2009, -0/+20sounds more like a CIA operation.
they use every trick and fake uniforms wouldnt be a problem.
And they have a long history of ***** up countries when american corporate profits are threatened. - bobbi21, on 08/26/2009, -0/+19yeah in terms of pure numbers there's more of almost everything now than before. It's a serious problem of course but ppl use this to promote their point way too much.
- desertDenizen, on 08/26/2009, -0/+18We should hook these guys up with Ethiopia. Lots of free sand there.
- Liability, on 08/26/2009, -0/+18Very depressing
- morefrommoe, on 08/26/2009, -0/+17except its not cheaper...
- Puppetfunk, on 08/26/2009, -0/+17The English were actually about to give aid to the Confederacy and break the Northern Blockade, because they were sent into a depression when we blockaded the South, which was where they got the cotton for their massive Textile industry. Then, when Abraham Lincoln changed the meaning of the Civil War from basic State's Rights to the issue of Slavery, the English felt it would be wrong for them to support the side that was fighting in favor of slavery.
- HEAVYisSPY, on 08/26/2009, -2/+19Look at all these moralists fishing for positive diggs.
Here's how much I care about digg's opinion:

but yeah slavery is bad. - smacksaw, on 08/26/2009, -0/+16Make sure you get one in a can and not a glass bottle...^^
- PowderedToasty, on 08/26/2009, -0/+16You might want to stop posting...
- inactive, on 08/26/2009, -3/+18Actually opticwinds anger is completely justified. Who the hell reads an article about slavery and uses it to whine about the government taking taxes like the situations are even vaguely comparable?
And no, we are not all "slaves indeed," just to be totally clear. Slavery is in no way defined as the government regulating things, or making you use a passport, or storing information, or property costing money. Shockingly none of the people enduring actual slavery will be that sympathetic to your plight of not being able to live out your dream of drifting around through a disorganised country where property ownership is presumably determined by beating each other to death. There are system in place for reason, and it's not all a conspiracy to steal peoples freedom. - zeth006, on 08/26/2009, -1/+15Regardless, reading that part made me sick to the stomach.
- redsox59, on 08/26/2009, -0/+14"LOL, I didn't mention anything about today did I?"
"How ironic how it is today." -
