- Godlesswanderer, on 10/10/2007, -3/+47I would have thought that with a name like "the untouchables" they'd be the highest caste.
- whathappened, on 10/10/2007, -7/+41The caste system is part of hinduism. You inherit your caste when your born into a hindu family. The caste system is being rejected very slowly, not surprisingly because of its stiff roots in the religion. The quality of your life is set on the day you are born in an indian-based hindu family.
- bhavi, on 10/10/2007, -1/+25@whathappened the caste system is not a part of Hindu dharma, it is an unfortunate part of the indian customs. In olden days, people were grouped according to the work they did (Read the article) which stuck into later generations and people were confined to them.
I logged in just to reply to your comment~ - sirlancelot88, on 10/10/2007, -8/+32All of you are (understandably) misinformed. The caste system in India is quickly becoming a thing of the past; many Indians are no longer even Hindus. Indians (especially of the younger generation) are becoming secular, and rejecting traditional ways of living.
- chancesarent, on 10/10/2007, -0/+21"There is no cow level"
Do I win the game? - wreckingcru, on 10/10/2007, -7/+26Also, being an Indian, I would hardly classify them as the *most* oppressed people *on earth*.
- wreckingcru, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15Actually, India *is* the biggest democracy in the world.
- Napoleone, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1970 diggs and no one knows what to say. Hmm. Neither do I. I mean, it's hard for me to comment on, when we can't even get our own house in order, here in the U.S.
It's such a sad condition to place oneself above another, though; constantly having to prove oneself. Especially when the only way one knows how is by bringing others down. Selfishness and greed and hate and prejudices are sadly enough all human traits. They don't belong to any race or culture. They are humanity's to overcome. - peligros, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15just depressing that someone can rationalize thoughts like this
- XopherMV, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13The people attempting to eliminate civil rights are Republicans, due to their hatred of blacks. The people attempting to eliminate equal rights for women are Republicans, due to their hatred of uppity women. The people attempting to jail immigrants are Republicans, due to their hatred of brown people. The people bashing civil unions are Republicans, due to their hatred of gays. The people who are in the KKK are Republicans, due to their hatred of everyone who is not white and protestant.
So, your conclusion is that the people who need to "stop the hate" are the Democrats? That'd be laughable if the topic weren't so serious. No sir, you are wrong. The people who need to stop the hate are the real haters in the Republican party. - inanytime, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9to tell you the truth, converted christians are treated as dalits (lowest caste) in india.
- mortigon, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11You started off saying the caste system works (which is wrong... if it worked everyone would be happy) and you ended with insulting Blacks and Mexicans. You... are a dick.
- fadeout, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Thunder Bluff.
- wreckingcru, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Wow, and I thought your first comment was bad.
God I hope you're not an Indian, because I'd be embarrassed as f*k to count as you as a fellow citizen. - haterrade, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9if you are reading this, stop now, just go back and start reading other stories on digg unless you want your head to explode from some of the comments here
- str3ama, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10anyone else familiar with hinduism think there's a lot of nonsense in that post?
- HaloZero, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8You could at the very least try to be a subtle troll
- zephc, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Buried, blocked and reported. Good job, limbo, you ***** troll.
- fatdog789, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Retard. The Caste system is not part of the religion, as Hinduism has no dogma.
The caste system is part of regional cultures. There are entire swaths of India where the caste system did not take root. During the Hinduization of South East Asia (before the subsequent Buddhization), the caste system failed to take root outside of South/West India, where it was strongest.
Indeed, if not for the British reinvigorating and reinforcing the caste system during their conquest of India, the caste system would not exist today. - zeptobyte, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9The top castes don't have higher IQs. They may be more intelligent, but that is only because they have a greater chance at becoming educated, being born into a higher social status.
- kernel16, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5In all honesty what is the difference of the caste system, and simply being born into a terrible social disposition. For instance, is someone born into the caste known as "untouchables" any worse off then someone born into the "ghettos" of America? Both are poor, both probably won't get a decent education, both are ignored by the government for the most part, both will probably resort to crime if all else fails, and it goes on. Call social injustice by different names, but the as I see it its all the same.
- mukund, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5not any more now.
Its changing. And changing fast. U will seldome find this. And I guess only in Indian movies. :) - silverchrysalis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6this is nothing like a simple class division- this is a way of life in which the Dalits, or untouchables, are not even worthy of school or basic human decency
- fadeout, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9As much as I dislike the religion shtick anywhere the driving force behind Christianity in India is that is specifically shuns the caste system.
- noumuon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5you're an idiot.
- XopherMV, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Socialism is already here. Our police forces are socialistic. Our fire fighters are socialistic. Our schools are socialistic. Our roads, bridges, and infrastructure are socialistic. Our universities are socialistic. Our medicare system is socialistic. Our social security system, our most popular government program ever, is socialistic.
If you wanted to come out fighting socialism, you're too late. These socialistic policies have been in place since the Great Depression, some longer. They were here when our country was at it's greatest. And in fact, these socialistic systems helped make our country great in the first place. So, you can thank your lucky stars for socialism making America a great country. - McLumpy, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8Will this happen before or after the far-right stops hating people for their skin color and sexual orientation?
- MikeDawg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4*Technically* speaking, the Caste System is illegal, and no longer in place in India. *Realistically* speaking, the Caste System is in place and tugging right along in India.
- AirRaven, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Astounding logic there, old boy.
I don't suppose you've considered the moral implications of said "Welfare State"? Or does the concept of compassion for your fellow man escape you? IQ has no bearing whatsoever upon a person's status as a human being- the Mexicans and Calcuttan Slum Dwellers are human beings too. It's morally reprehensible to reduce them to that level- just where do you draw the line?
Some empathy would go well with that temperament of yours there. - realgoat21, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5just to clarify, the caste system has almost no ramifications on an American Hindu's life. I have no idea what caste my Hindu friends are, and they've never asked me. The Caste system is really outdated and many Hindus have made efforts to do away with it, most notably Gandhi. Like he said, ""As soon as we lose the moral basis, we cease to be religious. There is no such thing as religion over-riding morality. Man, for instance, cannot be untruthful, cruel or incontinent and claim to have God on his side.""

- bugsy187, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Well there's still a lot of racism in America and a certain amount of intervention helps equalize the playing field. I know Fox news often makes the argument that black people are getting unfair advantages. Just visit some inner city schools to see how crumby the conditions and funding are. It doesn't exactly give them a fair start. There was a study that a black man with no criminal record was as likely to be hired as a white man with a criminal record. This is when they were equally qualified. As for the value of social programs, you need look no further than the other nations of the world. I believe we're the last industrialized nation without universal health care. Europe has a very well educated population and their currency is doing better than ours at the moment. Meanwhile, ours lack of funding, have large class sizes, and have out of date textbooks help keep students from succeeding.
Yes, we could return to the progressive tax system and take back some of the yacht money from the rich. We could invest it in society, instead of in fancy cars and trivial designer apparel. You only need so many summer homes, if any at all. It's common sense that if you give people the tools to better themselves and REAL opportunities they won't wasted time smoking crack and robbing people. You see, they have a REAL future to look forward to. They don't just have a life of cheap labor and desperation. - oldhick, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Are you really that stupid? Maybe they have children in spite of being in the caste because they want to. Maybe they believe in themselves and know they have something to offer... Or maybe they don't have birth control. I don't know. But I know you're a moron.
- behonest, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Totally trying to make the author and the mostly american readers feel better about themselves. So yes, it's a very biased and typical post, with a bunch of nonsense holding it all together.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6Higher than some people. Buncha weirdos
- Lax32, on 10/10/2007, -6/+9Its bad but what are you going to do?
Just because its wrong doesnt mean you can do anything about it. The entire culture and way of life in India revolves around the caste system. - behonest, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3WTF? Just the fact that the article writers didn't even mention Sikhism along with Buddhism and Jainism tells me that they aren't very well informed about india and it's religions at all.
- amphet, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Please go to the nearest hospital and donate all your organs, humanity doesn't need you.
- behonest, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Buried for quoting from P & T's "*****", because a lot of it is exactly that.
- DocHoliday22, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The original commenter has to be Sikh because they often call Hindu people cowards for not standing up to the Mogul empire and because one of their Gurus gave his life (his head) for Hindu people.
P.s. Not all Sikh people are like this filthy commenter some are nice. - Mokshaguy390, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Actually, this problem is very different depending on region. Sure you'll see this in the smallest villages and gaos, but it's really the same way in America. You look in the back-roads, and you'll find people who believe that people of African descent are born evil, and that women are nothing more than the pleasure objects of men. Hell, look up the statistics for slavery in America, you'd be just as surprised. You will find people this uneducated everywhere. If you look at not only the big cities in India, but even the majority of areas touched by government, you won't see this problem. If, however, you wanted to talk about poverty, you have an argument, but many of your statements here are not even applicable or relevant to the average Indian's life.
- mortigon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Everywhere else is mostly divided by money...
In India, someone born into "The Untouchables" could become a millionaire, but is still considered scum, while in America for example, if you have money, you automatically move up in stature. - crazybugger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3No where in the Vedanta have been written that, a person belongs to a particular caste upon birth. Caste system is in Indian customs. All people have to do is read the Vedanta and dispel their ignorance.
- XopherMV, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4None of these assertions are scientifically based. In fact, science has disproved these notions. You find high and low IQs in all portions of the population. There is no physical trait you can pick out that will predetermine IQ, such as caste or skin color or whatever.
- realgoat21, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3just to clarify, the caste system has almost no ramifications on an American Hindu's life. - drewhenson, on 10/10/2007, -5/+7The one where I eat them.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Yes, the caste system was never meant to be hereditary, it's just that in old indian society (like every old society) you took the job of your father, and thus your occupation "caste" was now hereditary. Before it was just used symbolically to show that without ALL the castes (like parts of body) society (the body) cannot function. The discrimination based on caste is entirely human-made.
- kernel16, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2"Dravidian" huh, funny how no such racial difference exist. The Indian "race" for the most part is a homogeneous one. Outdated British Empire propaganda is becoming tiresome.
- McLumpy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Block yo' dumb ass!
- oldhick, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Yes. Because you can move up in America. It may be extremely difficult, it may be rare, but you have a shot. But I do understand your point. Its inevitable that there will always be a class struggle. While class struggles can never be completely eliminated, the caste system should be.
