- nepidae, on 11/05/2009, -0/+9There is a huge difference between preserving culture and ignoring progress.
- ranon78, on 11/05/2009, -1/+7The Prime Minister and cabinet?
- kplo, on 11/05/2009, -0/+5Hey oh!
- verkon, on 11/06/2009, -0/+4it's the new autodigger, it diggs articles that contain keywords that you frequently digg. And apparently, you're an ass-lover.
- 3tcp, on 11/05/2009, -0/+4"and another group of poor people will be booted out of their homes and jobs."
So you're saying that they'll be thrown out on their asses? - iizh, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3Thank you for all that "pity" and "advice", world. But perhaps Indians don't see things the way others might. What's the point of preserving something simply because it's old? What makes things Indians do/build now any less worthy or valuable than what their ancestors did? Perhaps Westerners see it like this because they feel disconnected from their own history so they want to preserve everything. For India, it's all a continuum. Ancestors aren't any more special than people living today and history and culture don't just vanish. Progress needs to be made.
- nullcodes, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3umm, actually most of these people would rather be doing something else. I have been in many developing countries and spoken with a lot of people doing these types of jobs. They definitely rather be doing something else. Everyone I spoke to anyway. Many of them fear they cant get any other type of job. however the "tradition advocacy" groups either don't realize this .. or don't want to.
- scott1, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2I don't actually remember digging this but it says that I did. Maybe my computer just assumed that I would digg because of the title.
- Tryptek, on 11/05/2009, -1/+3Granted its their livelihood, but at one time there was a predominant need for lamp lighters, chimney sweeps, and shoe cobblers. They will be forced to adapt to the changing conditions to survive and may be better off for it.
The government is also complicit by not lending a hand such as workforce training so these people can break out of the only world they've ever known. But it all goes back to the caste system - a system of apartheid against your own people. - scott1, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1Apprantly I am lol
- BerateBirthers, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1What India needs to do is to subsidize those poor people so that the transition is as smooth as possible. Progress doesn't mean we have to let the free market run willy-nilly destroying people's lives.
Imagine how much better off we are now that President Obama is managing the transition from the internal combustion engine to alternative fuels. If only Ford could get the benefit of his leadership. - user500, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1More like with and on there asses.
- user500, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1kind of like this country, were better than 10% of the population can get a job.

I think the title should be changed to "The days are numbered for India". Seriously though, who cares about India?
