I speak Arabic, and for an organization whose sole goal is to translate stuff like this, they do a real crappy job.
For instance, the guy who says "unless he carries a rod on his shoulder" actually says "unless he carries a [small] stick on his shoulder".
The rationale behind this is yes, a man is allowed to beat his wife only symbolically. That is to say, a man isn't allowed to use a stick larger than a tooth brush and he can't bend his elbow. Good luck beating someone with that. This is all just propaganda.
The other guys talking about wife-beating are talking out of their asses and it's not sanctioned anywhere in Islam to use force more than the symbolic, laughable gesture as mentioned above.

This is what a society needs to better itself is a fair open conversation where even those with ugly opinions have the opportunity to reveal themselves.
Quite frankly, I think we need to do that more in the U.S. There are people out there with abhorrent beliefs and practices, but they're able to cover it up under the guise of being "politically correct".
