- einnej, on 05/13/2008, -3/+74I did a speech on her last year for my English class under the topic of survivors/heroes. It was sad to hear that not many people know of her, even though she's contributed so much more to the world than anyone most news outlets report about today ever will.
RIP - Donoram, on 05/13/2008, -2/+64There was actually a holocaust survivor living on my street not long ago until he passed away. He told us once how he and his brothers once hid under a house and could see the feet of nazi soldiers patrolling their home. It is so important that these stories are shared with our, and the next generations.
- duke_nate, on 05/13/2008, -11/+66It should also be noted that she was nominated for the Nobel Prize. Unfortunaltly it was the same year that al gore won it.
2500 children saved VS someone who made a slideshow. Definatly seems like the right person won there... - callinthelaw69, on 05/13/2008, -4/+38What a blessing to Earth this woman was. Rest in peace.
- inactive, on 05/13/2008, -11/+40Nice story, but really The Daily Mail should be banned from ever mentioning anything to do with fascism seeing as they supported "the black shirts" (British Union of Fascists). Their web content is significantly different from their newspaper. The newspaper still has bizarre stories on how asylum seekers are causing all the violence in the UK. Not a nice paper.
- MacBigot, on 05/13/2008, -16/+45Maki Maki,
Like you don't get enough stories on the front page... thanks for duping mine, you jerk.
http://digg.com/world_news/Polish_Holocaust_Hero_I ... - googooly, on 05/13/2008, -6/+29We the Digg community SALUTE you
- GregFD3S, on 05/13/2008, -2/+24Well, at 98 she lived a long life, well deserved.
- rawg, on 05/13/2008, -2/+22from the reuters feed... "The term 'hero' irritates me greatly. The opposite is true. I continue to have pangs of conscience that I did so little," Sendler said in one of her last interviews. (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080512/wl_nm/poland_s ...
truly a great hero. RIP - rheaume, on 05/13/2008, -2/+24Shindler's list makes me cry every single time. Like a baby. Give this woman a movie.
- inactive, on 05/13/2008, -1/+21Bless her heart... RIP :(
- jkleinfeld, on 05/13/2008, -2/+24A funny thing the Daily Mail is carrying this story, they were Britain's only mainstream Nazi supporters in the 30s.
- pitdog, on 05/13/2008, -3/+25We are proud of her. She was Polish, from Poland, like many more heroes.
- bentl1, on 05/13/2008, -1/+19Considering what the punishment was if she were caught, I can't believe how brave she was. The very definition of "hero" in my eyes.
The world is a poorer place without her ..... RIP - breadfred, on 05/13/2008, -0/+20I sincerely hope that was not sarcasm. I have never lived through a war myself, but my family has. My mum's family (dad and brothers) were head of the Resistance in the Netherlands during WW2. The things they got up to were incredible. My uncle (age 85!) just published a book about this and a television documentary is on the way. My mum still has nightmares about it. It was not a walk in the park to hid people on the German border, raid police stations to destroy incriminating evidence, have your best friends killed - all for the freedom we now enjoy.
- jacekpoplawski, on 05/13/2008, -2/+20In Poland we are very sad that many people from foreign countries think, that there were polish nazi camps or that polish people were on nazi side. Polish people helped Jews during WW2 like no other nation, and now after many years we are facing bad PR in Europe. Irena Sendler was just one example of polish hero, but there were others...
- xGORDOx, on 05/13/2008, -0/+15Everyone should know who this woman is, she's the the woman who lost the Nobel Peace Prize to Al Gore last year.
It's an insane world we live in. - inactive, on 05/13/2008, -5/+21Wow makimaki- you're a dick. Burying this trash and digging http://digg.com/world_news/Polish_Holocaust_Hero_I ... instead.
Stop posting dupes. - fr3ddie, on 05/13/2008, -3/+20makes me wonder why the hell anyone would want to be called a "neo nazi"
- rolf, on 05/13/2008, -1/+14And yet the owners, workers, and writers there are now undoubtedly different people. Unless you believe in inherited guilt?
- Donoram, on 05/13/2008, -8/+21Where were you brought up, that trashing holocaust survivors and heroes with sarcastic jokes is acceptable? You're a ***** joke.
- gerbil20, on 05/13/2008, -2/+15I think their choice was obvious:
1) She saved jooos! That's almost a crime in their eyes.
2) Al Gore provided livelihood to a huge number of ideologically correct people - left politicians, self-proclaimed climate scientists etc. He single-handedly created a whole new multibillion dollar industry of global warming.
On the other hand I am glad she did not receive the prize totally discredited by being awarded to the likes of Jimmy Carter and Yassir Arafart. - GregFD3S, on 05/13/2008, -1/+13You fail at life.
- inactive, on 05/13/2008, -5/+17While I don't condone stealing other people's stories and posting them again just to get a front page story, this is something of importance to many people the world over so posting about it more than once isn't really hurting anyone. It actually helps to gain more attention. Since this particular article is about someone who put themselves in grave danger just to help others survive, I think it's a little overzealous and slightly hypocritical to call the person that posted this a dick. This is just my two cents though.
- milesdavis22, on 05/13/2008, -4/+18Are you seriously implying a parallel between the Israeli government and the NAZI regime? And getting dugg up for it?
- neko6, on 05/13/2008, -4/+15I don't recall Israel systematically murdering Palestinians, and I don't remember the Jews in Nazi Germany attempting to genocide the Aryans. It makes more sense to mention those in the Arab world who fight against the indoctrination of hate of Jews that already led to three attempted genocides of the Jews in the region.
- iceperson, on 05/13/2008, -0/+10the names of the nominees can't be revealed by the committee for 50 years, they can however be revealed by those who nominated them at any time.
- foofoobee, on 05/13/2008, -1/+12wtf is wrong with you?
- kagebutsu, on 05/13/2008, -0/+10Sad day indeed, this world would actually be a good place if it were filled with people like her.
- urik88, on 05/13/2008, -1/+11Truly a hero.
Rest in peace. You obviously deserve it.
Can't understand how someone like Yasser Arafat got a nobel price while she didn't. - babydick, on 05/13/2008, -1/+11This should be in top 10, not ***** like "Truth In Website Logos".
- xGORDOx, on 05/13/2008, -0/+9And Al Gore won it, so yea, no doubt.
- dkapuchino, on 05/13/2008, -1/+10This thread is disgusting. Something that started with such a beautiful memory of a women, being used for political propaganda. This is a disgrace to her memory. Shame on you!
- mzx639, on 05/13/2008, -4/+14Ahmadinejad, is that you?
- dkapuchino, on 05/13/2008, -0/+9She doesn't need the 1M dollars and a phony title. Yassar Arafat was once awarded that same "prize".
She will forever be remembered in our hearts, and that's more than any prize named after the inventor of TNT could ever be worth. - pak314, on 05/13/2008, -1/+9Call the movie "Sendler's List".
- gdagreat, on 05/13/2008, -5/+13youre acting like a little bitch...get over it...its only digg :)
- dkapuchino, on 05/13/2008, -0/+8Sadly, 60 years later, anti-semitism still exists, and propaganda and lies seem to be spreaded by evil bastards such as yourself.
It's seems you get your Ideas of an alleged Jewish conspiracy to gain world leadership straight out of Mein Kampf. - MysticMist, on 05/13/2008, -1/+8Her 98 years of life is no way equal to the lives she saved! RIP
- milesdavis22, on 05/13/2008, -0/+8You are wrong. After the Sabra and Shatila massacre, for example, during the Lebanese Civil War, approximately 300,000 (THREE HUNDRED THOUSAND) Israelis, or 10% of the total population of Israel at the time, protested, and even then the complicity of the Israeli government in the atrocity was disputed. So next time, before you say something, don't be ignorant and do research.
- gryphon50, on 05/13/2008, -1/+10I always find it interesting that you have amazing people like this woman, or Schindler, or Raoul Wallenberg, etc. but then on the other hand you have people like Eichmann or worse yet, Mengele, who all show their true colors under a regime like the Nazis...it makes you look around and wonder what people are capable of, what they would do in the same situation. Maybe people don't know what they themselves would do under the circumstances.
- EvilGunOwner, on 05/13/2008, -3/+10"...the Nazis burned the ghetto, shooting the residents or sending them to death camps." That's it? No mention of the 1943 Warsaw Ghetto Uprising?! Typical. It's just like today when the local news programs eagerly report somebody using an improvised weapon to defend himself/herself against an attacker or robber, but fail to mention the numerous times somebody uses a firearm (often without shooting) to do the same. This gives people the false idea that they don't need real tools to protect themselves from the often bigger, stronger, and/or numerous foes whether it be individuals, organized crime, or government.
"There is no doubt in my mind that millions of lives could have been saved if the people were not 'brainwashed' about gun ownership and had been well armed. Hitler's thugs and goons were not very brave when confronted by a gun. Gun haters always want to forget the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, which is a perfect example of how a ragtag, half starved group of Jews took up 10 handguns and made asses out of the Nazis." -Theodore Haas. - Digger1218, on 05/13/2008, -3/+10Yes, because Bush=Hitler and the US is secretly planning genocide. If I heard anyone say this publicly, I'd be embarrassed for them.
- Monk22, on 05/13/2008, -3/+9you must be new to the internet
- Mejogid, on 05/13/2008, -2/+101) Perhaps the fact that the British Empire was unsustainable, and ultimately impractical to keep ethically maintain sovereignty over were pretty good reasons to allow it to break apart? It had been on the road to collapse since long before WW2, and the ultimate cause of the collapse was due to a change in the general perception of empires and governance (I say this is a Brit)
2) And how exactly is a fascist state where you purposefully delegate power to an elite group any better? At least in a democracy governments act wary of the impact on future election performance. Power corrupts, and the fascist states around the world are evidence of this.
3) There is absolutely no way the current economic could be described as a "collapse" - a temporary downturn that may have longer lasting implications, sure, but people aren't queuing in bread lines. The subprime crisis is hardly a basis to completely denounce all modern banking and economic theory, which accepts that this kind of downturn is perfectly normal and expected.
4) Not entirely sure what you're basing this on. In fact, that's complete bull. "European ideals"!? What rose-tinted glasses are you looking at the past with? There was nothing so utopian about past ages, and a far greater proportion of people suffered than do today. Art and culture may have evolved slightly, but I'd guess a higher proportion of the population is involved in art (creating and appreciating) now than in the renaissance since it is no longer the sole purveyance of the upper classes. Art may have taken different forms, although I'm sure you're the type that considers all modern music to be "nosie". Not entirely sure if you're advocating genocide, but I have no idea how else you plan to get rid of the elderly. Rebellion and intoxication are nothing new, and frankly the situation isn't, barring a few highly specific exceptions, nearly as bad as you imply.
I'm sure the list does go on, but unfortunately length is no indication of quality or underlying strength of argument. If I had the inclination I could cherry pick a few vague predictions that turned out to be correct from pretty much anyone with enough documented statements. It's the UK now, by the way, there's a little place called Northern Ireland that's been with us for a while.
I think your choice of the word "further" pretty much sums out your closing sentence's basis in reality. If you think the UK's in anarchy, I'd hate to meet a citizen of your regimented utopia. - urik88, on 05/13/2008, -2/+8Wrong.
The Israeli West Bank wall is not really different than this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States%E2%80%9 ...
It's called a BORDER, and it was about time Israel got one.
Also, the Jordan - West Bank border isn't controlled by Israel, nor has a wall. How's that similar to a Ghetto? Sounds to me like a frontier that doesn't let terrorists through... - gerbil20, on 05/13/2008, -0/+6You sir are an excrement.
- esilverski, on 05/13/2008, -1/+7Who are you?
- dkapuchino, on 05/13/2008, -0/+5They can digg you down as much as they want, they can never change the truth.
