- larryodbc, on 06/24/2009, -0/+35"She didn't believe that we always have to fight and quarrel and be violent and have death," said Makan. "There's only one thing (Iranians) must fight and that's ignorance. And you don't fight ignorance with a sword or a gun. You turn on a light."
- BohicaTwentyTwo, on 06/24/2009, -1/+22Its supposedly really bad today. Death toll in the hundreds.
- orlandogeek, on 06/24/2009, -0/+16I've been watching the news and yes, the situation has turned for the worse there. It's quite sad to see.
- Snuff99, on 06/24/2009, -0/+12it's because we are able to see it with our own eyes. if 9/11 had not been captured on video the impact to the avg. American would have been much less. it's not because she is hot it's because we all watched her die and that has an impact.
- EddiePotato, on 06/24/2009, -0/+8The rulers are just sealing their fates. They'll see no mercy from the people once they fall. And they will fall, since there are growing divisions even among their own thugs.
- cheddaro, on 06/24/2009, -4/+11"And you don't fight ignorance with a sword or a gun. You turn on a light."
Well, we all learned a valuable lesson today...
You don't bring a light to a gun fight. - Wugie, on 06/24/2009, -1/+8I think you are missing what people are upset about
- anthropodeus, on 06/24/2009, -1/+7as much as i like peace and all,
tell what you just posted to the native americans. what's that? you can't? well, that's probably because they were completely annihilated.
sometimes you have to fight back to defend yourself and your beliefs. - yehaww, on 06/24/2009, -2/+8And people here are obsessed about reality tv shows, Paris Hilton and Obama swatting a fly and putting spicy mustard on his cheeseburger.
- orlandogeek, on 06/24/2009, -0/+6Truer words.. RIP Nida, may your murder not go unpunished.
- JCEEZ, on 06/24/2009, -1/+6What happens around the world, greatly affect our lives here at home.
buried - Induane, on 06/24/2009, -0/+5CoD4 is too busy playing games to realize that people might have an actual emotional response to watching someones actual death. Her eyes look to the side for a moment as the cameraman rushes forward and before the blood runs out of her mouth and you see in that moment she is alive and conscious and then her life just drains from her. I think you'd have to be pretty cold for that not to affect you, particularly considering she died for a cause and not just in some terrible accident.
- EddiePotato, on 06/24/2009, -0/+5It's all about context, friend. Read about a fatal car accident in the paper, and you'll forget about it five minutes later. See an accident happen in front of you, witnessing people bleeding and suffering, it will stick with you for a long time.
No need to bash human nature - it's how we're born, and applies to all of us. - Tubal22, on 06/24/2009, -0/+4Wait so is this my fault or not?
- Vaiper, on 06/24/2009, -0/+4When humans no longer exist.
- Neverclear, on 06/24/2009, -1/+5I like how the original news and story from the fiance were "Their car was blocked by protests so her and the music teacher decided to ditch and walk the remaining blocks to their destination. She really didn't have much of an opinion, was probably targeted because she was dicking around on her cell phone not paying attention, and was just in the wrong place at the wrong time." - and is now - "She was a great freedom fighter that only wanted democracy and her last words were she will fight even if a bullet hits her heart (which it did sob sob sob)".
Who to believe... who to believe... - Induane, on 06/24/2009, -0/+4Very eloquent actually. I hope this helps the world realize that the people of the middle east want many of the same things we all do and that they are all evil extremists. Nida should serve as an inspiration to the people of Iran for the cause she gave her life for and also as a way of illustrating that patriotism and love of freedom is not something unique to the west, that peoples rights are something that extends to all mankind, and that everywhere there are people willing to make such a sacrifice in the name of freedom. I hope her name is not forgotten as the news cycles follow with new fresher violence to tide over our appetites for entertaining news.
- boozedrinker, on 06/24/2009, -0/+4***** THEOCRACIES!
- TheStrangeBrew, on 06/24/2009, -0/+3http://vodpod.com/watch/1788376-more-murder-in-ira ...
It's kinda graphic and hard to watch. Sad.... - EddiePotato, on 06/24/2009, -1/+4The Native Americans who run the very successful casino near my house will be displeased to learn that they've been completely annihilated.
Jokes aside, I agree with you. Nonviolence only works when the attacker has some sense of civility and moral obligation. When the oppressed are dehumanized in the eyes of the attacker, such as was often done in the American west, a non-fighting person is a dead person. - pathouston22, on 06/24/2009, -1/+4JON AND KATE. JON AND KATE!
- apetrie, on 06/24/2009, -1/+4A thumbs down and a "***** you" for you my friend.
- AmazingSteve, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2This video, horrific as it is, will stand as an icon much like the "tank man" photograph from China or the screaming girl on her knees beside her dead boyfriend at Kent State.
- Kardall, on 06/24/2009, -1/+3I don't have TV at home, and I didn't know about this until I got to work and saw the news and the riots on cnn. Then I come on digg during a break and see this.
It's nothing really new. In that kind of society, such a drastic change is going to have a clash of opinions. It's sad, but it's a reality. It has happened time and time again with every governmental change. Look at Tiananmen Square in 1989. Massive changes, with massive protests.
The major problem with the protests in these countries, is the type of government in place doesn't allow large protests of this nature. They see it as a direct threat to their operations, so they do things to combat it, usually violently. - Neverclear, on 06/24/2009, -0/+2I think he said if you're not from Texas then it's not your fault.
- mlvassallo, on 06/24/2009, -0/+2What if you just live in Texas and you aren't really "from" here...
- cheddaro, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1It's OK, I doubt anyone would use the murder of an innocent young woman to further their own cause... so at least you don't have to worry about that.
- Basecamp88, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1It's weird to read this article after reading another recent front page article which made it seem like she was only at the protest because she got stuck in a traffic jam cause by the people in the streets.
I don't know what to believe. - cuervoman914, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1a link to the video please? youtube wont let me sign in
- cuervoman914, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1i dont know man, we got people like ron paul who say we shouldnt interfere and all that, but it's hard not too when people are presented with the harsh reality that in fact they actually should. a republic is formed to defend the rights of the people sovereign of the nation, without the help of the french, the us wouldve never taken footing. people in iran deserve the democracy they're dying for.
- gnomeh, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1If there is anything I believe, its an askmen.com's article. Nice story but not close at all to what any normal news is reporting.
- hydroponik, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1What happened to this young girl is tragic, but like all dictatorships, they eventually fall. Hopefully her death isn't in vain.
- WalkerTXclocker, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1http://www.demotivateus.com/tag/firefly/
- Tubal22, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1They're both correct. That's what martyrdom is.
- inactive, on 06/24/2009, -2/+3I thought it was an allusion to the shot that started the American Revolution. Because it is.
- masterstghm, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1No link to the vid?
- Neverclear, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1Pretty sure the article is written just to get some hits and ad revenue to their poorly written, ***** website that people won't stop submitting to Digg.
People won't click on ads if you're being all harsh and *****. Gotta' get some tears flowing for those dolla billz y'all. - oldhick, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1@owch, I think the point was simply to find the truth. Was this lady martyred for a cause she was fighting for? Or was she the victim of a tragic act of violence. Either way an innocent woman was murdered among those protesting freedom and there is no denying this tragic loss. However, if the media is going to paint her to be a martyr who died "fighting", then it would be relevant for us to know the truth. That is all. No one is diminishing what is going on in Iran nor are we diminishing the tragic loss of life.
- masterstghm, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1TL;DR
- Neverclear, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1Pointing out that askmen is a ***** sensationalist news source not reporting anything close to what every other major, reputable news agency is saying is not making fun of her.
She wasn't protesting. By all accounts from her family and friends she didn't give a ***** and was at the wrong place at the wrong time. Slowly as more attention got paid and the chance for a big cash payout / freedom martyr status loomed people changed their stories, but in the end Neda Soltan was shot because she walked through the wrong part of town trying to get somewhere completely different. - Tubal22, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1@Owch: I guess the reason I got "so it's my fault" is because you're talking like we owe something to Iran, and that we should all personally stop what we are doing and mourn for them.
While what's happening over there is tragic, OUR forefathers paid the price for OUR freedoms. Hopefully, in time, they will have the same freedoms. It's part of becoming a civilized country.
Once they win their own freedom, they'll appreciate it a lot more. Look at Iraq. We went in and plopped freedom in their laps. But since the general population didn't have to fight for it, then they're still over their beating each other up.
When we fought against England, we had many different cultures and religions that stood together. Irish, English, Slaves, Indians, etc all came together to fight a common enemy. In Iraq, they're still too busy fighting each other and us to appreciate the freedoms that they now have.
This is Iran's fight, not ours.
Now if they decide they're going to point a nuke at us, i think it will be our fight really quick, and democracy in their country will be a bonus. - boardwalker, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1She was a poignant SYMBOL of the wanton violence that has taken place. The graphic video scene of her death personifies the utter mindless violence of the regime towards anyone who finds themselves in the firing line. Its not simply because she was good looking that her death resonated - the video made its impact on us before the accompanying photo of her appeared, A cheap shot from CoD4 seems unnecessary, under the circumstances. And as for the later response of "billski", I hope it was satirical and not serious. Otherwise we have a problem...
- boardwalker, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1Where's overseas, head? In case you're from the USa, its not quite the centre of the universe, and as the end of Pax Americana nears, all of us within your sphere of influence can only hope that your president, whom we admire, can lead all of us through the coming times.
- Rhythmix, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!!!
- bigpappapunk, on 06/24/2009, -1/+1truly tragic...when will it stop
- orlandogeek, on 06/25/2009, -1/+1Liberal fear mongering? Maybe that's who does the fear mongering in the Great White North but in America the Republicans are the masters of the political FUD game.
- evetsleep, on 06/24/2009, -1/+1sad indeed and yes...it's hard to watch and not feel that hopefully there is such a thing as karma and that it does indeed come around.
- Owch, on 06/25/2009, -0/+0I agree, I was just pointing out that we Americans should examine our current lives in face of our own freedom and Iran, if it gains freedom should try not to squander it on useless trivial garbage. I guess I wasn't clear. Anyway /nod to what you said.
- ThraxyWaxy, on 06/24/2009, -1/+1I'm Canadian.
- CoD4, on 06/24/2009, -2/+2That's because most people here don't restrict themselves from simple things like alcohol and sex (though i understand many do).
Make these things acceptable in their culture and a whole lot of your problems will vanish. -
