- whatthefu, on 10/11/2007, -1/+27Why didn't historians compile this list, if anything. Or academic elite who specialize in architecture and archaelogy, etc.? I can't take this list seriously at all.
- Worldchrisis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+21I think the fact that many of these monuments were made much farther in the past is part of what makes them magnificent. We could create monuments like the ones on this list, but we live in a time where monument building is seen as narcissistic and wasteful. Monuments like the ones on this list were built out of the excessive spending of tyrannical rulers and the zeal of powerful religious leaders. These simply don't exist in the same manner anymore. A President cannot conscript large amounts of the population into slave labor to build him a gigantic monument, as the egyptians did. Machu Pichu(a whole city), the Great Wall(defense) and the Colloseum(entertainment) are the only ones on this list not built for the reputation of the ruler or as a sign of devotion for a religion.
- ScrumFritter, on 10/11/2007, -2/+22Here's a wonder of the world: The Internet. One of our most amazing constructions, methinks.
If not that, at least Google! :p - crazydiode, on 10/11/2007, -4/+24to start with there is nothing official about it. so how come it's been called the "new" 7 wonders?... one wonders..
- aaronm67, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18Psh, this question was answered 15 years ago with Civilization II.
Everyone knows the 7 Wonders of the Modern World are the Seti Program, The Apollo Program, the Cure for Cancer, Hoover Dam, United Nations, Women's Suffrage, and the Manhatten Project. - Worldchrisis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11There is a list of "7 Natural Wonders of the World", look it up
- burgerboy06, on 10/11/2007, -8/+19i think "wonders" should be natural. Grand Canyon, Norwegian Fjords, stuff like that. That Brazil statue is cool and all, but its still just a statue on a hill.
- krist69, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11a better picture of Petra: http://www.ccds.charlotte.nc.us/History/MidEast/03/cornwell/Indiana_Jones_pic_Petra.jpg
- Daniel001, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12You're right, but there was nothing official about the old seven wonders either. It's all just opinion.
- supernovasky, on 10/11/2007, -4/+13I can think of about 20 structures that are more awe-inspiring than the statue of christ the redeemer. It's not because it's christian either, it's not even the best statue out there in my opinion.
- aynrandom, on 10/11/2007, -4/+13I'm not taking this list seriously either. First off, the Pantheon in Rome wasn't even a finalist, yet the statue of liberty was. Where is the logical justification in that? That's a laugh. Seems like more importance was placed on having a globally diverse list than actual architectural or artistic wonder.
- Keverwinkle, on 10/11/2007, -5/+13Alright, Brazil's Christ the Redeemer statue is *****. I'm in Cochabamba, Bolivia right now and I can look through the ***** window and see the largest statue of Christ on Earth aka Cristo de la Concordia. If you speak Spanish here's the Wikipedia link if you want to see which statue should have won http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cristo_de_la_Concordia . Pinche brasileños...
- a10waveracer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Heaven forbid us atheists for not hating everything having to do with religion. I think pretty much anyone will agree that the "Christ the Redeemer" monument is pretty damned cool.
You don't have to be religious to appreciate the beauty of religious symbols. - alvinhokid, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8they're actually both 38m tall. Plus, don't get all pissy and jealous because Brazil's statue is of greater cultural value and is much better known. Plus, at the end of it all, it's just better looking. So, I applaud the efforts of Bolivia, but you need to get over it - Cristo de la Concordia wasn't even nominated.
- Psywar, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Indeed, Angkor should be there instead of the Statue. As for the others, they are ok...
- techmoney, on 10/11/2007, -15/+21It says a lot about the world we live in when only one wonder (Christ the Redeemer) was created in modern times. We look at our society as being so advanced and superior yet we cannot create a monument that equals what has been done thousands of years ago. Future archaeologists will look back at us with a mixture of amusement and disgust.
- JonnyTrombone, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8The "Hill of Crosses" is WAY more hardcore than Christ the Redeemer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hill_of_Crosses
- norbiu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Two links pointing at the same ***** site!
- TheDCoop, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6This list is full of crap. First of all, who decided on what potential 'wonders' to include in the vote in the fist place? Im pissed because they didn't include Persepolis in Iran which is amazing, amongst many other awesome buildings im sure...
- JesperL, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6That's because these days we're not ruled by autocrats who only care about power in life and their legacy (which usually was an elaborate tomb or huge monument) in death.
Just saying, is all. - maguilar2k, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6This was an unfair competition, and just a big business for the creators. There was no control of how many votes were submitted by each person (that means millions of Chinese voting several times for the Great Wall, peruvians voting for Machu Picchu, etc). A better example of the failure in the voting system was the election of the Corcovado's Christ in Brazil (a modern construction of the XX century). How can be that statue more "marvelous" than Stonehenge or the giant statues of Eastern Island (both almost 2000 years old)... some of the giant statues of Eastern Island are 300 tons of weight. In all the countries people was able to vote sending payed messages from celullar phones.
- carpespasm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5it;s certainly been constructed faster, and done more for humanity than at least a couple of these. it's too bad it's physical form is so distributed that there's no real wonder to behold with it.
- GangsterCompute, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Panama Canal
- canha, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4And the Grand Canyon is just a big hole.
Like you. But it doesn't have the ass preceding it. - tybris, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3A few online poll hackers.
- iluvhatemail, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3there was a story on npr a couple weeks ago about this. It is rigged. Let's take Brazil for example. From the report they were marketing that statue like crazy just so they could influence the votes. I dont think this sort of thing should be a popularity contest. How about 1 delegate from every nation of the world communicate and debate what they would consider the top 7. Sounds like a lot of work but that's the only way I would take anything like this seriously. Internet voting works for Digg, but anything else is pretty lame.
- BassMastr, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Yeah the world wonders where its at...
- disabled4diggin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4i agree about Petra and Machi Picchu being added...
BUT WHAT THE HELL IS SO SPECIAL ABOUT CHRIST THE REDEMER???
its a statue built in 1931. Its 105 feet tall. How the hell is that even considered to be in the same category as The Great Wall or the Giza pyramid??????
that one addition makes the list worthless. they take out stonehenge and replace it with a 1931 statue?????
i'm gunna print this list out and wipe my ass with it. WONDER THAT. - Empyrean, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Doesnt matter, statues dont try to impose their moral values onto others, maybe it can teach some of these people a few lessons.
- Psywar, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4You forgot the "Future Tecnhology #" wonder...
- JoCliMe, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Petra is definitely the coolest one on the list...even if it doesn't look the same indoors as Indiana Jones would have you believe.
- canha, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5You're just sad because USA isn't on that list.
- tybris, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Kick out the Rio statue, put in the pyramids as one of the 7 and it's fine by me.
- jmchez, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2This list makes as much sense as AFI's best movie list. It's all up to one's taste. I believe that a real "wonder" would have to be something that was a major engineering or artistic challenge that encompassed extreme difficulty or originality.
On a personal basis, I find it odd that the George Washington Bridge in New York never gets kudos alongside other "wonder" bridges like the Brooklyn Bridge or the Golden Gate. However, the GWB has one record that all experts agree can never be equaled in teh future; the greatest percentage increase in span over the previous recod holder. The GWB was almost twice as long as the previous greatest span. No other bridge since has even come close to that increase. To me, its builder, Ottman Ahmar (who builtof the 6 longest spans in New York City, including the Verrazano narrows) was a wonder maker. - aaronm67, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2For the lazy:

Wall of the world - To be the VIII world wonder - lordmike, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Dugg up for the Lithuanian reference...
A wonderful example of civil disobedience at its finest.... - tybris, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2You mean like http://www.natural7wonders.com/ ...
- resplence, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It's not meant to b taken seriously. It's just an event for marketing and instill a greater appreciation of what humanity can achieve.
- supernovasky, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The statue of liberty. I'm not even patriotic, but it's much more recognized as a symbol, and much bigger.
- aegis9975, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3First off, this whole "New" Seven Wonders of the World is a money making scam. They count votes by the internet, and then ask you to pay extra that can count to multitude of more votes. Secondly, they falsely claimed to be associated with UN's UNESCO; the UN responded would reflect "only the opinions of those with access to the internet".
- aynrandom, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Is that sarcasm or do you not comprehend English? Read my post again and don't skip where it says "yet the statue of liberty was."
- SebK666, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Dugg! Read my comment! You're a 100% right!
- herval, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The Christ only got it's spot because Brazilian government spent some good 10 millions in advertising, and Brazil has one of the most active Internet mobs of the world. That 'statue' (which is like 1/3 of the size of the Statue of Liberty and 1/10 of Eiffel Tower) is lame...
- polymorphist, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Talking about unfairness...How about the fact that the original 7 wonders of the world are all from Mediterraneans?
- Juroujin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Meh. The Pyramid at Chichen Itza is a ziggurat
- drummerman109, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2i think theres plenty of wonder from browsing wikipedia and knowing that all that content was created by humanity itself, seems like the perfect way to chronicle human existence, by asking everyone to contribute
