- stutimandal, on 12/30/2008, -5/+27On one side, Russian political scientists talk about failure and civil war in the USA. On the other side, US reporters worry about the popularity of Putin in Russia.
I guess both the countries have enough problems of their own. - raphaeltmnt, on 12/30/2008, -8/+29Good. He's an ex-KGB, and several journalists have died under his watch. Under mysterious circumstances, I might add.
- TSK05, on 12/31/2008, -5/+20First, it's not a myth. Putin is very popular (seeing as how I was born in Russia and lived over half my life there, I would know). Second, no it's not coming to an end yet but maybe, just maybe this is the beginning of the end. In short, most of this article is crud. Putin's popularity is certainly not thin.
- Richandler, on 12/31/2008, -7/+21It's funny because Putin didn't start two wars and bankrupt his country, yet the people cause civil unrest.
- richmomz, on 12/31/2008, -3/+16The popularity of ALL governments around the world are eroding very quickly due to the global economic crisis (Greece being the prime example currently). Putin's domestic popularity still much higher than most western leaders and MUCH higher than Bush's.

- charlietuna, on 12/31/2008, -1/+8I was wondering that myself. I have never read of any polls suggesting he his not well liked.
- sensadiva, on 12/31/2008, -0/+7Russians love their maniacal dictators. Stalin killed millions of Soviet citizens. This month they voted Stalin as the third most popular Russian of all time:

- bikerbanjara, on 12/30/2008, -7/+12I guess china will take advantage of america and russias problems.
- traveler1217, on 12/31/2008, -1/+6Ha-ha! My sentiments exactly! What the hell will China do to 'take advantage'? Sell cheap toys to both countries? What a shame U got dugg down for it. Ah-well, I'll digg you up for going where I was intending to go!
- ZenMojo, on 12/31/2008, -0/+4It's like the Republic of Dave. Except without the polygamy and radiation.
- Buckwyld, on 12/31/2008, -0/+3Oh boy... I got chastised ages ago saying something about Putin and his popularity. Gonna let history play its course on this one.
- lievenvdh, on 12/31/2008, -4/+7Yea, the Russians love Putin, and for good reasons, after all he is doing a terrific job. The Russians really have had it with cowardy leaders that just give them their "freedom", and with that throw the country into anarchy (ie. Gorbachev). Before Putin started, the country was in a really bad shape, and Putin managed to get the country back on track again, and it's actually doing very well now, compared to how it was 10 years ago. Sure, he may be a tough guy, but the least thing the country needs right now is more instability.
Putin isn't a nice guy, and he may go over dead bodies while trying to reach his goal, but in the end, he's not a selfish powerhungry dictator, that only cares about himself. He really does want the best for his country.
And on the long run, once the people get used to their new stability, these freedoms and real democracy will eventually come as well, just like what's happening in China right now.
I'd really recommend everybody to read "The New Asian Hemisphere". A great book to get to understand how these non western countries are very quickly going through the process of becoming more modernized, and also why the simplistic preachings of the west of "just give people their freedom and democracy, and everything will work out fine" just doesn't work. - ZenMojo, on 12/31/2008, -0/+3Social bribe? Does the author mean "government?"
- GreatSunJester, on 12/31/2008, -0/+3and now he is a high level powerhouse with the KGB mindset.....

So? George Bush senior was a director of CIA.
"several journalists have died under his watch"
During any US administration countless babies and puppies are killed in one way or another. - punkcat, on 12/31/2008, -1/+3Putin is so popular, if you run against him you risk being killed.

- yacinebouatrous, on 12/31/2008, -4/+6South Ossetia war was diiferent, Saakashvili ordered his army to kill Russian soldiers and citizens, Russia left after 2 weeks, it's not like U.S imperialism

- inactive, on 01/01/2009, -1/+2The day is not far off when Putin is hanging from a meat hook, jusk like Mussolini.
- mdepaul, on 01/07/2009, -0/+0Yeah, the truth already has a liberal bias, so there's no need to sink to the other sides' level.
- sstidman, on 12/31/2008, -4/+4You're right, of course. Maybe it's the myth of the accuracy of Huffington Post articles that starting to fade.
Why do people bother reading a biased piece of trash which has such obvious political intentions? - gnuyen, on 12/31/2008, -5/+4Opposition leader Gary Kasparov said that Putin's entire strategy for "popularity" hinged on keeping oil prices high, as oil production in Russia is expensive. It seems he was right.
- yacinebouatrous, on 12/31/2008, -5/+3today, Georgian cybersoldiers are attacking Digg
This is fake, i know Russians and Putin is still very pupular, ***** liars
huffingtonpost??!?!?! what an unbiased source1 - inactive, on 12/31/2008, -4/+2Perhaps he killed millions of Soviet citizens, but do you take into account what good he did Russia? In World War I, before the Soviets took control of the country, the Russians got royally pasted by the Germans, men waiting for their fellow soldiers to die so they could take their guns to defend themselves. Russia was a backward agrarian mess. Under Stalin, production quickly reached levels much higher than before the revolution and the Russians were able to take World War II from the outskirts of Moscow all the way into Berlin. Afterward, Russia was one of 2 world superpowers. It was the first time since kicking Napolean's ass that the Russians could truly feel proud and on top of the world. Of course they love the man, in spite of any flaws he may have had.
- NickLee808, on 12/31/2008, -11/+9Wow, that came out of nowhere.
Here's some advice: shut the ***** up if you have no idea what the hell you're talking about. You're bringing in ***** that isn't even remotely related to the article at hand. - bcc0232, on 12/31/2008, -7/+4He was a low/mid-level ***** in the KGB, with no real power or connections, skills, or even respect inside that agency.
When he was assigned to be the director of FSB (a purely political appointment) most of the FSB elite (the real spooks) were disgusted.
So give it up on making statements about him being an ex-KGB to mean anything. - ObamaYouth, on 12/31/2008, -4/+1we'll find someone else to love from this great former communist society.

- defmer, on 12/31/2008, -10/+6and CIA is at it again....the three steps to deface a govt.
1) corrupt as many politicians as possible. - since most of the russian politicians are EX-KGB and others backed by oil gaints , though corruptable, they are not deemed as a threat to the govt.....so XXX failed at this step.
2) create a small protest rally by providing the money and other trivial resources and make sure it gets MAXIMUM publicity to portray a major civilian unrest thought here is very minor and insignificant one which was staged int he first place.
3) if the step 1 and 2 fail.....assassinate the leaders of the nations or org's as needed.... - inactive, on 12/31/2008, -8/+4Hmmm...not that much different than Obama, huh? He's not even president yet, and his popularity is already in decline.
- AboveandBeyond, on 12/31/2008, -11/+7If there is one website that I hate, it's Huffington Post.
liberal spammers...uhh..it makes me sick just saying it. - happyhrvat, on 12/31/2008, -7/+1In Soviet Russia, people revolt against you!
