- diargasm, on 05/16/2008, -4/+11Imitation of Great Power? Sure the USSR is gone, but Russia's economy is growing and they still have influence in Central Asia, Eastern Europe, and the Caucuses. If anything is reviving, it's the Orthodox Church of Russia. Good for them.
- tomjm5000, on 05/16/2008, -0/+6I was going to make an Arod joke, and then thought better of it. Time will tell if fellow diggers show similar discretion for the "in soviet russia...." jokes.
- 3tcp, on 05/16/2008, -0/+5Nationalism - When the politicians in power cause more problems than they fix, order can still be maintained by assigning a collective identity to the people then claiming that it is under threat by those who disagree with you
- inactive, on 05/16/2008, -3/+7This is just terrible. They don't even have a history channel to display propaganda all year long about their military might and the glory of the state? What? Are they stupid? You're not supposed to drive them around just to show them to people. You're supposed to kill innocent women and children in backwards underdeveloped countries that have done absolutely nothing to them. People are right, russia is really backwards.
- bratterscain, on 05/16/2008, -0/+3In b4 ***** Soviet Russia joke.
- robche, on 05/16/2008, -1/+3call it imitation all you want, that still looks terrifyingly awesome
- inactive, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2In soviet russia, ***** soviet russia joke make you.
- AlwaysAwake, on 05/16/2008, -1/+3Stop! Look ! Listen ! This all sounds very familiar, doesn't it ? Like Putin in Russia, the not-so-lame duck lackey of the "old" NWO, Dubya & Co., has no intention of going away quietly into the night. They've got it all on the line now, and they are playing the final hand in the lethal game for keeps. Which way will Putin jump, when all the chips are in play ? We will all be aware very soon.
- bosssmiley, on 05/16/2008, -4/+6Looks like the iconography of Tsarism never really died; only the system of appointing the autocrat changed. ;-)
- trollick, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2Oh please. Victory Day parade in Red Square is an old tradition. What's so nationalistic or "saber rattling" about celebration of defeat of Nazi Germany? It so happens that tomorrow I'm going to Armed Forces Day Parade in Torrance, CA. Guess what? There will be tanks and stuff there! These damn beach city dwellers love to rattle their sabers!
- diargasm, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2Actually they do have a lot of historical programming in Russia. But I get where you're going at.
- AlwaysAwake, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2Duh..............
- robdiggity, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1They have a great deal of money, enormous resources, and the mob and a cold warrior in (seemingly permanent) control. This is going to be an exciting world.
- HighlyRelevant, on 07/25/2008, -0/+1Russia is doing well and is keeping their bravado persona alive it seems http://www.louisoneill.org
- RogueGenius, on 05/16/2008, -1/+2Good idea. Let's stick our head in that sand and let the rest of the world take over.
You hear that ringing? It's the reality phone. ANSWER IT! - roodammy44, on 05/16/2008, -1/+2Meet the new boss, same as the old boss
- Dragoslav, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1It looks impressive
It's not *****, but still impressive (more impressive than 80+ year old veterans carrying flags) - bosssmiley, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1Tsar and Autocrat of all the Russias, self-proclaimed heirs of the Byzantine Emperors ('Tsar' being derived from the Roman Imperial title of 'Caesar') and defenders of the Russian Orthodox faith. Absolutist monarchs who ruled the Russian Empire from Moscow (and later St Petersburg) from the 15th century to 1917. A byword for reactionary and irrational despotism.
No idea what you're talking about. :-p - inactive, on 05/16/2008, -1/+2And for their next trick, a spectacular collapse of the gov't!
Americans buying less oil + 1/3 of the Russian gov't revenues from oil = fun - positron, on 05/16/2008, -2/+3You don't know what a Tsar was, do you?
- HighlyRelevant, on 08/13/2008, -0/+1http://www.louisoneill.com is more like it
- flaknugget, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1Jingoism. They aren't the only country that diverts attention with it.
- RogueGenius, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1Maybe this is good news in a left handed way. Without Soviet competition the US has gone down the social, economic, and credibility dumper. Maybe we need a strong opponent to be great - we surely haven't been great lately.
- nydwarf, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1Arod not only hit home runs he writes good stories!
- sanman, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1Same could be said about the US. Time to stop ***** over other countries. Because even when they do appoint somebody you want, then you'll find another reason to ***** all over them. They're entitled to some national strength, too. The world wasn't made to serve you.
- sanman, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1I agree, good for Russia. I'm tired of hearing all these hardline Cold Warriors vent their bile on how they dislike everything about the Russians, including how they blow their noses. The hardline redneck types will never be happy until all other nations are buried six feet under.
- BabyWookie, on 05/16/2008, -1/+2I am afraid that you are ignorant. Chechnya was part of the Checheno-Ingush Autonomous Republic within the Russian Soviet Federal Republic. It was never one of the 15 republics that formed the USSR, whom the Soviet Constitution gave the right to secede. Chechnya's mountainous regions have been a part of Russia since the early 1800's, but the Chechen plains wave be populated by Russian Cossacks long before that.
- inactive, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1I love how uninformed you are. It keeps me rich.
- BabyWookie, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1Why are you always hating on Russia? Still bitter about that gorgeous, young mail-order bride leaving your pasty old ass and running off with young black stud and taking a bunch of your money?
- BabyWookie, on 05/16/2008, -1/+2Vazel,
What's your point? Russia is been a multi-ethnic state for over 300 years. The Russian Orthodox Slavs are the majority, but there are dozens of other cultures, with different languages and religions. - Vazel, on 05/16/2008, -2/+2Actually they do have a lot of history programming and as for attacking underdeveloped countries Chechnya says hi. And be sure to read up on all the bullying they are doing to Georgia.
- mehan, on 05/16/2008, -1/+1Americans buying less oil = not gonna happen.
- inactive, on 05/16/2008, -1/+1You just described the south in the civil war.
- bincoder, on 05/16/2008, -1/+1Now that they have discovered the sheer power of liberty and capitalism, watch as they spiral back into the dark times of the old soviet union and once again lose it all to tyranny and oppression. After all, anything for the children, anything for the State because whats good for the children and for the State is what's good for You. Or else.
- inactive, on 05/16/2008, -2/+2Those are sortof like us kicking the ***** out of the south in the civil ware aren't they? Not quiet the same thing.
- inactive, on 05/16/2008, -1/+1If stalin was the architect of the gulag labor camp system, why was dostoyevsky writing about it like it had been there since time immemorial in the 1860s. I think that's the place they send criminals there and always has been.
- inactive, on 05/16/2008, -2/+2I wonder if the tribune is going to become a neocon paper now since sam zell bought it.
- rancor01, on 05/16/2008, -2/+2Unfortunately? I think its great that in the near future there may be another country around that can punch America in the nose a few times and maybe frighten us into backing out of things that we have no business in.
- macieksos, on 12/25/2008, -0/+0Thanks for good content
http://www.ebookiporadniki.pl
http://www.natradzik.com.pl - Vazel, on 05/16/2008, -2/+1No. Chechnya has its own ethnicity in its own historical region. They have had a long history of independent movements. The Soviets even gave them their own Soviet Republic. But while all the other Soviet Republics were seceding Russia decided to not let Chechnya do the same.
- Vazel, on 05/16/2008, -2/+1No i didn't. Read up on Chechnya. Their history and religion are different from Russia. They are a distinct non-Russian people.
- inactive, on 05/16/2008, -3/+1Bolshevik Jews killed most of my mothers family in the over throw of the Tsar turned into a land grab. My great grandfather was a farmer and did not deserve to die or lose his land to Jews.
There WAS a reason Hitler invaded Poland. - monoa, on 05/16/2008, -4/+1More religion? Yeah, that's just what the world needs.... /sarcasm
- piwko120, on 05/16/2008, -6/+3Unfortunately Russia is still powerfull. They have lot of oil, which has a big influence to the whole Europe.
- Jackson0909, on 05/16/2008, -4/+0Good for them? You do realize they are gradually going back to being the Soviet Union. The writing is on the wall. The will be a communist state again within five years.
- inactive, on 05/16/2008, -7/+2That Ruskie tank would make a fine target for an M1A2. Putin is reconstituting the economic power of the Soviet energy and industrial monopolies, with all of the dysfunction, incompetence, and corruption of the old Soviet monopolies. Write Russia off.
