In another Democracy Now interview, Abdi Samatar, professor of Global Studies at the University of Minnesota, had this to say:
The Ethiopian invasion, which was sanctioned by the US government, has destroyed virtually all the life-sustaining economic systems which the population have built without the government for the last fifteen years. And the militia that are supposed to protect the population have been looting shops. For instance, the Bakara market, which is the largest market in Mogadishu, has been looted repeatedly by the militias of the so-called Transitional Federal Government of Somalia, supported by Ethiopian troops. And the new prime minister of Somalia, Mr. Hassan Nur Hussein, has himself announced in the BBC that it was his militias that—who have looted this place. So what you have is a population that’s hit from both sides: on one side, by the militias of the so-called Transitional Federal Government, which is recognized by the United States, and on the other side, by the Ethiopian invaders who seem to be bent on ensuring that they break the will of the people to resist as free people in their own country.... What you have is really terror in the worst sense of the word, a million people have been displaced that the Ethiopians have been denying humanitarian aid, and the United States which seems to just watch and let it happen." - angeladtao, on 07/12/2008, -0/+2We Americans only ignore these stories because we don't think that they could ever happen to us here in America. But look at our country now! We are a debtor nation instead of a creditor one. No one has to invade us to conquer us. They just have to call in our note. China owns most of our debt. Doesn't that worry you? Don't you know anything about Chinese history and ambition? Look at our current economic situation. The rich are getting richer and the poor, well, they have always been poor, but there are just a whole lot more of them now. We have the co-manager of the campaign of one of our two candidates for President saying that there is only a "mental recession" and that the "American people" have turned into a nation of "whiners"! He is (or was) thought to be a candidate for McSame's Treasury Secretary. With the fast widening gulf between the poor and the wealthy, we are turning into a 3rd world country ourselves. How long will it be before we won't be able to maintain our infrastructures? We already are seeing our highways, bridges, schools, and other public systems deteriorate before our eyes. How long will it be until funding for our defense will be too much for our tax payers. The crushing debt that the Iraq War is running up (we haven't begun to pay even 1 penny on it yet! It is a running tab!) may one day crush our treasury. Then, who will protect US from this type of exploitation? There may be a few grudges around the world to be settled. There may be some natural resources here that other countries are willing to fight us for, and we will defend ourselves with-----what? It sickens me to see people suffer like this in a natural disaster, but to know that our country has a hand in it is unpardonable. When one of my young friends does something that he/she knows they shouldn't do to someone else, I always tell them that they are racking themselves up some whopping bad karma. Well, maybe our country is doing that, too. It may just be the sad and scary fact that you and I pay the consequences of these bad deeds.
