- vtbarrera, on 02/03/2009, -0/+19Thank goodness for the internet, where opinion and debate reign free regardless of the state of the corporatocracy for these media conglomerates.
- jotate, on 12/26/2008, -2/+15This has nothing to do with college football. :(
- inactive, on 12/26/2008, -0/+13current as of Dec 2001? this is ***** old.
- vroom101, on 12/26/2008, -0/+13Here's the article that goes with that "dramatic visual depiction of the vast holdings of the 'Big Ten' media giants":
"What's Wrong With This Picture?" by Mark Crispin Miller, 20 December 2001: http://www.thenation.com/doc/20020107/miller/singl ... (www.thenation.com/doc/20020107/miller/single) - SatoriSeeker, on 12/26/2008, -2/+13http://therealnews.com/t/
http://newsproject.org/ - p47plane, on 12/26/2008, -0/+10What's worse, ignorance or propaganda? I'm not sure I know the answer, and I don't trust theirs.
- Mujokan, on 12/26/2008, -0/+8I would say the main problem is cable news, which couldn't get ratings 24 hours a day with well-researched straight news and balanced analysis even if they had the desire or the capacity to do so. Then you'd have to say it's that the other main sources have gotten lazier and more ADHD, and just tend to report on what people are reporting and repeat the story of the week without thinking twice.
The web is kind of a wash because for every conspiracy site there is a debunker site. People who get stuck in a cycle of confirming their own extreme opinions by hanging out with other paranoid types are probably balanced out by general wider exposure to differing points of view for your normal news surfer. - nroose, on 12/26/2008, -0/+8Clearly what is wrong with this picture is that it is 7 years old.
- theDarkGamer, on 12/26/2008, -0/+7Television has become little more than corporate propaganda. Is it any wonder people are getting news from the internet now?
- allaboutdatiki, on 12/26/2008, -0/+7And now, the news ... Styrofoam packaged and neatly wrapped.
I'm mad as hell, and I won't take it anymore. - CircaSurvive, on 12/26/2008, -0/+5Glad I'm not the only one that thought that at first!! haha.
- BayouBengal, on 12/26/2008, -1/+6It's because they really have 11 teams, they needs a 12th and a championship game. Plus, stop losing in the national title game. Oh wait, this isn't football :-(
- DearSergio, on 12/26/2008, -0/+4With companies like Comcast running our cable lines and providing internet service....
...I have faith in the internet. - crugg, on 12/26/2008, -0/+4I don't understand. Why are we looking at outdated information that is 9 years old? I am sure there is much more relevant information on this topic by now. Especially after two elections and economic problems. Why would an idiot go and put this on digg? Again what an idiot. Look before you post.
- jhails, on 12/26/2008, -0/+3How long before they do the same to the internet folks?
- AlbinoRaven, on 12/28/2008, -0/+3Remember when the Hard Copy format was something to be made fun of?
Now its the only format on TV. If you are close enough to the border you can catch CBC, even that is starting to buckle under the fast, vapid and visceral news broadcasting method. - oddfreakperson, on 12/26/2008, -1/+4A lot of those were terribly out of date.
- UltraDavid, on 12/26/2008, -0/+3The Big... Ten? Seriously? At what number do we stop saying "Big X," especially when many of us here (including me) use literally none of them to get our news?
Also, as an Anaheim Ducks fan, I have to point out that no, Disney does not own the Ducks and has not for years now. How old is this article? - mochaman, on 12/26/2008, -0/+3Viacom and CBS split a couple years ago, though they still pretty large.
- CircaSurvive, on 12/26/2008, -0/+3Go Penn State!!
- TexanRudeBoy, on 12/26/2008, -0/+3And these 10 entities are probably all owned by about 2 or 3 banks.
- chetchez, on 12/26/2008, -0/+2 CONSPIRACY THEORY ROCK! Media-Opoly | TV Funhouse
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGEdDd5zsHo - ueadave, on 12/26/2008, -0/+2Love the irony in this submission, given the way msaleem and his ilk reacted a while back when their monopolisation of the front page was threatened by changes in the Digg algorithm.
- srfrogger, on 12/26/2008, -0/+2AT&T?
- OffConstantly, on 12/26/2008, -0/+2Favorite find of the day so far!
- bdbr, on 12/26/2008, -0/+2The problem I have with mainstream news is that they're trying to make news without spending money on research. Its much easier to just shout out opinions, or get some "expert" into the nearest studio to tell one side of the story. We hear everything as black or white, and rarely in the shades of gray that are usually the true reality with complex situations.
- webernyc, on 12/28/2008, -0/+2This media chart is from 2001 -- bizarrely out of date.
- wwwforexsigcom, on 12/26/2008, -0/+2The mainstream media gets paid off by special interests far too often.
- perrym, on 12/26/2008, -1/+3buried for being far too old.
a lot of change has occured in the media world.
an absolute ton of changes at News Corp. makes their section pretty useless. - juk3box, on 12/26/2008, -0/+2the mainstream media in the United States has failed miserably. They've been wrong about WMD's in Iraq. They've been wrong about about no-bid contracts. They've been wrong about the economy. They've been wrong about the "dynamic New Economy". They've been wrong about the opportunities the middle class in the USA has. Jobs have been offshored, immigration has increased, and wages have been lowering. The distribution of wealth is spreading and the Gini coefficient is increasing but the media is silent. They've been wrong about Alan Greenspan being a supergenious who knows what the precise interest rate should be. They've been wrong about the bailouts, which the people overwhelmingly opposed, which congress said needed to be done to fix the economy, which didn't fix it but resulted in a major crash. They've been wrong about middle east politics and the causes of 911. They've been wrong about U.S. "successes" in Iraq and how "the surge is working". They've been wrong about U.S. foreign policy in South America, which tried to overthrow hugo chavez and failed. They've been wrong about public opinion in South America, claiming that people all over South America want to overthrow their own elected leaders and put in U.S. friendly dictators. They've been wrong about OPEC oil being used to back the dollar. They've been wrong about the causes of the current economic crisis, which bill orielly said TWICE in one show, "nobody saw this coming".
This list just goes on and on. How much longer should it go? People pay hundreds of dollars per year for cable television and paid "news journalists" lie to their own paying customers! Why pay somebody to lie to you? Why!?!?! Why!?!?! Why?!?!?!
And the mainstream monster is STILL GROWING! It's time to put an end to this. Cut the cable chord and cut off all funding to these people. If you pay for mainstream media, you are paying people TO LIE TO YOU. - user500, on 12/26/2008, -0/+2it makes you thankful they own the internet
- juk3box, on 12/27/2008, -0/+2please see my rant below about how people pay lots of money for these billion dollar lie operations. Let's stop feeding this monster, please.
- akshay626, on 12/26/2008, -0/+2Anyone else find it ironic that USA network is owned by the French?
- Branchex, on 12/26/2008, -0/+2Are the charts even up to date? I saw assets like the UPN channel listed under Viacom even though it was merged with the WB to make the CW. The Atlanta Hawks were listed under Time Warner even though they sold them.
- duckyinc, on 12/26/2008, -1/+2How about the bbc? Both sites are full of obama fanboys.
- dondochaka, on 12/26/2008, -0/+1Damn you Disney! I'm going to write you a very angry letter! ...Right after I'm done watching all of the networks you own and giving you my undivided attention and my money. Hey it's not like its my fault.... my daughter just HAD to have that Hannah Montana CD. *Ahem* Down with corporate media!
