- Beson669, on 11/15/2009, -3/+86What are you expecting Obama to do? The problems of a city should like first with the city leaders, then the state. You can't blame all of this on, for example, teachers failing to educate. There is a great deal of responsibility that should fall on the parents and yet they do nothing. People forget the president is not a dictator, or a king, or any other kind of supreme leader; you can't blame or credit every happening in the country on him.
- PBScott, on 11/15/2009, -5/+51"According to Recovery.gov, the Atlanta zip code of 30354 has received over $42,000,000 in funds, but only 30 jobs have been created."
Wow, those must be high paying jobs.
Once the Federal Govt sends the money to the municipal, they have done thier job. Obviously the municipal Govt is not doing its job. - Spartakip, on 11/15/2009, -3/+47"urban youth" word filters in my mind to "black people"
- headhot, on 11/15/2009, -8/+36"Obama's" continued neglect? The dude has been in office less then a year. In the best case scenario, how long do you think it would take to fix the problem if it had any presidents 100% attention?
Beside, from that phrasing, I'm assuming your an ***** teabagger. In which case, isn't one of you platforms state rights and smaller federal government? Wouldn't this be out of the purvey of the Federal government under those conditions?
So which is it? - Rollwit2002, on 11/15/2009, -7/+35No amount of money is going to make these places nice to live in.
- furburglar, on 11/15/2009, -10/+30I disagree, I do think money can be thrown at some things. Funding public schools, law enforcement and beautifying public places has proven, relatively immediate and tangible results. All of these cities suffer severe broken window syndrome, where neglect begets neglect.
- mattyboy555, on 11/15/2009, -1/+21People would rather just blame someone else then blame themselves,
- Tironius, on 11/15/2009, -2/+18The article was pretty overt. Blacks are causing most of the crimes in each of the cities.
- 4321234, on 11/15/2009, -14/+30Excellent progress, Pseudorious. Your education at FOX news is now complete. It is time for you to move on to infowars.com.
Don't worry. No one can see this message but you. - non00b, on 11/15/2009, -0/+14A lot of the problems in the black community (and this article is focussed solely on black minorities) has to do with the breakdown of the family unit. Kids without fathers look for guidance elsewhere, often on the street, It starts at a young age too. If you want to bring down crime, you have to give these kids the support and guidance they need. Money should go towards youth programs, tutoring, scholarships etc.. You do that and the crime will go down substantially in a few years.
Less crime = more development = more jobs = less crime - Railz, on 11/15/2009, -2/+15Superintendent of my suburban district used to make 700k a year. What ***** is that? It only had one high school. Get rid of districts and let counties run it. Too many districts lead to far too many administrative positions which just are money drains.
- markhiler, on 11/15/2009, -2/+15I agree, I think most of the responsibility is up to the parents, of course I bet a lot of these kids don't have both of their parents.
- untouchableLENS, on 11/15/2009, -0/+11You mean the cities where Blacks are also "most of the people?"
5. Cleveland - The racial makeup of the city was 50.99% Black or African American, 41.49% White, 1.35% Asian, 0.30% Native American, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 3.59% from other races, and 2.24% from two or more races.
4. Baltimore - Blacks or African Americans made up 63.8% of Baltimore's population; of which 63.6% were non-Hispanic blacks.
3. Atlanta - The racial makeup of the city was 56.8% black, 37.7% white, 2.0% Asian, 0.2% American Indian, 2.3% from some other race, and 1.1% from two or more races; 4.7% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
2. Atlanta - The racial makeup of the city was 81.6% Black, 12.3% White, 1.0% Asian, 0.3% Native American, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 2.5% other races, 2.3% two or more races, and 5.0 percent Hispanic.
1. Chicago - The racial makeup of the city was 41.97% White, 36.77% Black, 4.35% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.36% Native American, 13.58% from other races, and 2.92% from two or more races. 26.02% of the population were Hispanic of any race.
Chicago is the only exception and even then it's a close second. - phylaxer, on 11/15/2009, -2/+13I don't care whose fault it is. This is terrible! Each one of us digg users has the ability to tutor a kid how to read or provide a good mentor in our own cities. I volunteer twice a week teaching an 8th grader how to read. Take some personal responsiblity, this is your country too, get out and help!
- d03boy, on 11/15/2009, -2/+12You think the students are incapable of learning from the teachers? Maybe its because of all the other social and family pressures that they choose not to graduate. Do you really think Ohio is some genetic spawn of idiots? Something needs to be done to solve the root of the problem, not the effects.
- kingatrock, on 11/15/2009, -5/+15yeah its obama's fault, hes not busy enough with all the problems we have atm.
- niradg, on 11/15/2009, -4/+14I don't know why Obama is being blamed for problems that have existed for decades, but it's also wrong to assume that he is doing nothing to improve opportunity for inner city youth. Go read about the quiet revolution that Arne Duncan is spearheading in education. http://features.csmonitor.com/politics/2009/11/04/ ...
- brandonAll, on 11/15/2009, -1/+10As an African-American male who grew up in West Detroit I have to say that horrible parenting is 70% of the problem.
- lavis88, on 11/15/2009, -0/+9Yeah, that typo makes me want to go snort a 8-ball, stir up some *****, and go do some drive-bys on their asses.
- 4321234, on 11/15/2009, -3/+12Ronald Reagan proved deficits don't matter.
-Dick Cheney. - tiberone, on 11/15/2009, -0/+8Okay all of those cities need to be moved down two places and the top two spots need to go to Gary, IN and East St. Louis, IL, easily the 2 worst cities for anybody, including youth.
- sixtimes, on 11/15/2009, -5/+13"For Chicago's zipcode of 60603, more than $800,000,000 in Recovery Act funds has been received, with a dismal 19 jobs created."
Uh, that's because 60603 is in the heart of downtown and is loaded with skyscrapers. C'mon, article, at least give a relevant example. - KingGorilla, on 11/15/2009, -0/+8I thought Cleveland rocks?
- Paktu, on 11/15/2009, -0/+8At least they're not Detroit:
http://www.todaysbigthing.com/2009/05/01 - untouchableLENS, on 11/15/2009, -0/+8These are the types of tired ass speeches I hear in LA by "urban" and minority "leaders" whose only interest is being in the spotlight and sounding righteous while doing nothing to solve problems because then the source of their attention-whoring in life would be gone.
- phybere, on 11/15/2009, -0/+7The stats are pretty misleading. Take this quote on Detroit "Statewide, African-American youth comprise almost 50% of arrested juveniles."
WOW, 50% OMG HUGE NUMBER. Ok, but 80% of the population is black, one would expect 80% of the arrested juveniles to be black.
Edit: Just noticed also... They're talking about Detroit, why are they using a state-wide statistic? - ShadowofAres, on 11/15/2009, -1/+8No, Cleveland sucks, and it always has.
- pinkfish411, on 11/15/2009, -0/+7Are you serious? Most university presidents don't even make anywhere near that much. What could possibly qualify a school superintendent for that kind of salary?
- untouchableLENS, on 11/15/2009, -0/+6Good catch.

Note how they go crazy about how African-Americans are the highest suffering of any "minority." These idiots apparently don't know what "minority" means.
With the exception of Chicago, African-Americans are the MAJORITY, and in Chicago EVERYONE is minority since no single group is over 50% of the population.
I swear, the writer might go to Nigeria and think, "Wow, this place is full of minorities!"
You can tell the idiots who think like this grew up with ZERO diversity, whether they lived in a white, black, Asian, Hispanic, Native, or any other majority population. - PhoenixAvatar2, on 11/15/2009, -0/+5On the other hand, you really can't expect the federal government to know the best way to use the money and you can expect that pork will creep in there anyways. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
- Anomaly100, on 11/15/2009, -3/+8I am so glad you put an "s" at the end of that comment.
- inactive, on 11/15/2009, -0/+5I lived in Munich, we didn't have this problem...
- fadeout, on 11/15/2009, -1/+6You can't blame the president for decades (if not over a century) of bad parenting that inevitably leads to kids with no education and sense of morality.
Black and hispanic youth tend to get the most (negative) attention, because of population density, but you are just delusional if you think it's not as bad in the rural south and mid west. Crystal meth is the new crack. - inactive, on 11/15/2009, -3/+8Zimbabwe, Darfur, Congo, Haiti, you name it, they're all like this and always have been. And the more money we reward to ANY behavior, the more it persists...
- untouchableLENS, on 11/15/2009, -0/+5One of the most reasonable comments here. Dugg.
- BoutDemCanes91, on 11/15/2009, -8/+13Ohio sucks. Admit it Ohioans!
- d03boy, on 11/15/2009, -1/+6That's sort of the definition of urban...
- phylaxer, on 11/15/2009, -0/+5Sure the system and parent's roles could improve, but it takes time and its not easy. Right now, we've got kids who are behind and need more support. If someone doesn't reach these kids, they're going to drop out and become a liability.
- Thermador, on 11/15/2009, -0/+4The reasons for the conditions in these places can seem endless. All I know is that I am happy that I never grew up in any of these cities and I am happy that I live a nice life. Why these cities are the way they are is beyond my comprehension.
- c010rb1indusa, on 11/15/2009, -3/+7I was in favor of the stimulus but I did not like the fact that the states would have control over the funds. Now look what's happened, millions have been spent but no jobs have been created probably because local governments are treating the stimulus money like pork spending.
- Thermador, on 11/15/2009, -1/+5I am more of a fan of personal responsibility, but that is easy to say when I have not had to be very responsible my whole life. What responsibility I have had has been made easier by a lot of other things.
- m0n0kr0m3, on 11/15/2009, -2/+6All those peeps in all those big buildings, and only 19 jobs? That's pretty pathetic. I'm glad I moved away from this hole years ago.
- KingGorilla, on 11/15/2009, -1/+5Ok, now what does that accomplish?
- untouchableLENS, on 11/15/2009, -2/+6I wanted to digg your comment for the first part but I had to bury you for the second part.
He's much more likely to be a left-winger who (stupidly) thinks that Obama is "abandoning" these communities, based on the way he thinks (explained in your first part.) Like the people who heckled Obama at one of his speeches and said "What about the black community Obama?"
Your comment about him being a teabagger was really out of nowhere and showed not only ridiculous partisanship but hypocrisy. You simultaneously accused him of being a partisan hack (a teabagger) while at the same time bringing in partisan politics from out of nowhere. The irony is that you even point out how different his comment was from the teabagger mentality (reducing government involvement) yet somehow you deflect this again onto him.
If anything, we can only read that the submitter is idealistic, naive, and expects immediate results.
I hate the polarizing "two-party" system that we have. I bet some people are going to think I'm a "ring wingnut" just from the fact that I'm criticizing your comment. Not everything is "them" vs. "us", people. - Samurai77, on 11/16/2009, -0/+4How is it "we" are failing them, why is it anyone's responsibility to fix them but themselves, I hear stories of people who started with nothing and succeeded all the time. How can anyone go in and fix a culture.

- Paranor01, on 11/15/2009, -0/+3so welfare people = blacks ? and welfare is their culture?
you really think like this, don't you. - davidyourduke, on 11/15/2009, -0/+3It was 50% statewide. Citywide (as in only Detroit), I'd expect the "black" offenders to be near 100%. I don't hate blacks (or any individual for that matter), but I'm realistic.
