- inactive, on 07/16/2009, -26/+169I think this is pretty sad: http://i35.tinypic.com/15s57c4.jpg
- Crazyredivan, on 07/15/2009, -2/+136We're capable of some pretty horrific things...
- vonbrachner, on 07/16/2009, -1/+116The one with the Father and child being shot dead...riveting. The dead always have the most horrific expressions....
The one of the tsunami dead also struck me; we are so used to seeing masses of dead from the black and white photos of yesteryear. To see it from a 4-year-old photograph makes one realize that human mortality is eternal. - AlyxVance, on 07/16/2009, -6/+97a picture of a fish? the story behind it maybe, but a picture of a fish? really?
- BiggestofMikes, on 07/16/2009, -10/+81The saddest thing in the world is we crashed the saddest server in the world. Sad.
- rburton, on 07/16/2009, -0/+63I realize how hard it is to grasp how someone can take pictures of things like this. But understand that if photojournalists didn't do this very difficult job, we may not be aware of these tragedies even existing.
I mean this comment to reflect the majority of the pictures The torture and lynching pictures which depict pride in what was done is not photojournalism. I'm right there with you on that one. - oda1, on 07/16/2009, -4/+62While I don't want to detract from the worthy post... The description left me shaking my head.
- darknecross, on 07/16/2009, -2/+55"For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much - the wheel, New York, wars and so on - whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man - for precisely the same reasons." -H2G2
- Tripacer9999, on 07/16/2009, -15/+68lol, god.
- thehyker, on 07/16/2009, -0/+51Wow...some things can't be unseen. A few of these photos I've seen before, and sadly, still remember them vividly...so awful.
- numberneal, on 07/15/2009, -7/+57shocking... the planet is burning
- ZeroCubed, on 07/16/2009, -6/+54I don't see how anyone could stomach taking a photo of torture, starvation, slaughter and massacre. The Vulture and Child, and the Starving boy and Missionary were especially devastating.
- jimminy, on 07/16/2009, -0/+43These things are not meant to be unseen. We must remember them forever and learn from them.
- lostngone, on 07/16/2009, -8/+49Yes Internal Server Error is a sad picture but I can't seem to find the other 28...

- sonnybobiche, on 07/16/2009, -0/+29And the famous picture of the Viet Cong prisoner being executed. Well, there's a side to that that most will never hear about.
The photo won Adams the 1969 Pulitzer Prize for Spot News Photography, though he was later said to have regretted the impact it had. The image became an anti-war icon. Concerning General Nguyễn and his famous photograph, Eddie Adams later wrote in Time:
“ The general killed the Viet Cong; I killed the general with my camera. Still photographs are the most powerful weapon in the world. People believe them, but photographs do lie, even without manipulation. They are only half-truths ... What the photograph didn't say was, 'What would you do if you were the general at that time and place on that hot day, and you caught the so-called bad guy after he blew away one, two or three American soldiers?”
Adams later apologized in person to General Loan and his family for the damage it did to his reputation. When General Loan died, Adams praised him: "The guy was a hero. America should be crying. I just hate to see him go this way, without people knowing anything about him."
Americans are so goddamn ignorant about Vietnam. Half of them don't even know there was a South Vietnam that was struggling to keep their country free from the communists, and when we left, they were imprisoned. - gamingspartan, on 07/16/2009, -3/+32Crashed with no mirror wonderful
- Virgule, on 07/16/2009, -2/+29This one is quite sad: Poor ducklings... QQ
http://i28.tinypic.com/9r2b6a.jpg - DrDragun, on 07/16/2009, -0/+27The guy who took the vulture starving child photo famously committed suicide after returning from his trip. It even says so in the article. So you're right.
- Junkyarddawg, on 07/16/2009, -1/+26It's a bit out of place, but the nile perch in lake victoria is considered the largest extinction event in human history. As it happens lake Victoria was basically the aquatic version of Galapagos, with several hundred fish unique to just that one lake, and the introduction of the nile perch led to the extinction of possibly as many as 300 species of fish (no one really knows, because the lake had not been fully investigated before nile perch was introduced and most species were lost before they were even known to science).
As an added bonus it also crashed the local fisheries, causing widespread famine.

- fallingdamage, on 07/16/2009, -8/+32i wish people wouldnt put all the blame on Union Carbide, they did not directly cause the spill. The indian people working for Union Carbide were pissed at their employer and decided not to do their jobs anymore. With plants abruptly left unattended, this was the end result.
People were hired to do a job, they knew they were dealing with hazardous chemicals. They chose not to do the things necessary to make sure a spill wouldn't happen. - duggtodeath, on 07/16/2009, -1/+25The starving Biafra kids broke my heart :(
- danj484, on 07/16/2009, -3/+25And yet, the fire and brimstone Bible-thumpers always miss the fact that in the US, the Bible Belt and Tornado Alley are pretty much the exact same geographical region.

http://rorr.im/digg.com/world_news/the_29_saddest_ ... - nyxerebos, on 07/16/2009, -0/+20you can't feed them all, but a picture might help galvanize public opinion, and bring aid that feeds a buttload of people.
- Rotzooi, on 07/16/2009, -3/+22I choose to ignore Daniel16399's post.
- InfinitySnatch, on 07/16/2009, -2/+20Because we have the means to envision them, humanity is capable of things more horrific or incredible than any other creature. That is the inescapable duplicity of our nature.
- centran, on 07/16/2009, -1/+19I could argue that invasive species are causing more ecological damage then Chernobyl did.
I am not sure that picture was added just for that one case but thousands of cases around the globe. Non-native/invasive species are a hugely overlooked ecological problem. It is not really talked about much unless you experience it first hand. - NaziHatinChimp, on 07/16/2009, -2/+19Yeah, that's right up there with the dead people and starving children.
- PixelMagic, on 07/16/2009, -0/+17That's quite a chin.

Just thought I'd add a little bit of perspective there. - s0nicfreak, on 07/16/2009, -1/+17You must have posted the wrong links, those are aborted fetuses.

"Film taken of gangs of dolphins repeatedly ramming baby porpoises, tossing them in the air and pursuing them to the death has solved a long-term mystery of what causes the death of so many of these harmless mammals"

- GregLoire, on 07/16/2009, -0/+15I'm going to guess that not many of those kids have fathers who discussed family plans with the mothers, then stuck around afterward. I'm also going to guess that most of the sex that produced the children was not purely out of love between two committed adults.
I'd be careful about projecting your concept of the standard suburban American family to distant, poverty-stricken cultures. - Rotzooi, on 07/16/2009, -0/+14FutureGuy, everyone SHOULD click. Ignoring it doesn't make it go away. See what's going on and live your life in a way that prevents all that crap from ever happening again.
- breeeeg, on 07/16/2009, -2/+16I've always wondered why people think human life is so valuable. It really isn't.
- rburton, on 07/16/2009, -1/+15I'm not gonna lie. I teared up a bit at some of those.
- lolwatermelon, on 07/16/2009, -0/+14The world population is 6,706,993,152 (July 2008 est.). If you're one in a million, there's still 6,707 of you.
