- inactive, on 09/12/2008, -41/+127Apparently, South America is tired of taking ***** from the USA. That's a good thing.
- smotpoker, on 09/12/2008, -38/+100If every government began doing this, perhaps ours would get a ***** clue.
- foxtrot3, on 09/12/2008, -35/+88Yes, Hugo Chavez is an *****. The problem is that he's an ***** with lots of oil.
- jgatz, on 09/12/2008, -9/+60I am so glad we are hearing about this
and not Britney Spears - decet, on 09/12/2008, -24/+69Lots of oil? Woohoo - time to bring democracy to Venezuela. Or to find their WMDs. Or to wipe out their Al Qaeda training camps. Or whatever.
- unhap, on 09/12/2008, -18/+59You people are all idiot, I live in Venezuela and Chavez is a tyrant who rigs elections. NOBODY in Venezuela likes Chavez. NOBODY. So not "good for him." You fools saying such things should be thankful you live in a democracy. This is just his latest move to try to oppose the USA.
- Lloydinator, on 09/12/2008, -26/+56Yep, there's another country McCain and Palin would love to bomb.
- notque, on 09/12/2008, -10/+40Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has threatened to cut off oil export to the US in case of any 'aggression' against his country.
"If there is any aggression towards Venezuela" from Washington, "there would be no oil for the people of the United States," Chavez warned on Thursday that if he stops selling oil to the United States, world crude prices would immediately go above $200 a barrel.
Interview with Peter Bourne, who served as an adviser to former US president Jimmy Carter on Bolivia http://tinyurl.com/4exabq
“When there is a new government in the United States, we’ll send an ambassador,” Mr. Chávez said
The United States Treasury Department on Friday named Venezuela's top two intelligence officials as supporters of drug trafficking activities
On Venezuelan Television they played recorded audio tapes of coup plotters plotting to blow up the presidential plane. These are ex-military men that were also working within the US coup in 2002. - HyperZiper, on 09/12/2008, -18/+45Both Evo Morales and Chaves are a JOKE.
I live in Chile. I know. - notque, on 09/12/2008, -11/+37Not good for them. I think Morales and Chavez would both prefer the US quit committing coups against them. They have enough real issues to focus on in their countries without the US supporting terrorism.
- swrostmore, on 09/12/2008, -7/+32I'm curious to hear about this coup attempt in Bolivia. Is there any supporting evidence out there? Considering the very real possibility that the CIA did in fact support the recent attempted Chavez coup, I'm inclined to think it actually happened.
- hackiavelli, on 09/12/2008, -3/+28We need to get out of South America. Forget the drug war. Forget the big scary socialists. If they want to screw up their own economy, let them. It's not like we can lecture anyone on that particular topic.
Stop giving Chavez excuses and the only one left to blame for his failed policies will be himself. - notque, on 09/12/2008, -8/+33Depends on what you mean by America. No one hates the population of America. Everyone hates the government of America.
Big Difference. - inactive, on 09/12/2008, -24/+49Chavez still trying to be relevant, I see.
- GreeneMachine, on 09/12/2008, -49/+73Chavez hasn't mattered ever and he doesn't matter now
- notque, on 09/12/2008, -6/+29The US committed a coup against Venezuela in 2002, and are now committing one in Bolivia.
People are often ***** when you overthrow their Democratically elected governments. - notque, on 09/12/2008, -14/+36The US committed a coup against Chavez in 2002, and now are attempting a coup against Bolivia through USAID funding.
Chavez's actions are rational provided you understand history. - inactive, on 09/12/2008, -9/+27Could you even find Venzuela on a map?
Do you have any idea what you are commenting on? - anselm83, on 09/12/2008, -29/+47Good for both of them.
- wynja, on 09/12/2008, -19/+36Oil War in Venezuela to begin in 5...4...3...2...1...
- notque, on 09/12/2008, -5/+22Yes, USAID has been financing the secession effort, and people within the secession effort. Democracy Now! had coverage of it in March I believe.
The CIA without a doubt supported and assisted in the coup of Hugo Chavez in 2002. - dafragsta, on 09/12/2008, -5/+22No, he's inviting Russia to run military exercises with bombers and they are accepting. He doesn't matter at all.
- Y0tsuya, on 09/12/2008, -7/+24Why not a sedan? The doors are easier to open.
- saranagati, on 09/12/2008, -3/+18I'm pretty sure the islamist terrorists are less of a threat to the US population (and pets) than the US government is a threat to its own population.
- unhap, on 09/12/2008, -9/+23I don't care about North American politics. I care about my country. You say you like Chavez but what do you know about him or Venezuela? Nothing.
- pintomp3, on 09/12/2008, -10/+23it's incredibly arrogant that the US considers an entire block of sovereign countries as part of it's "back yard"
- Taiyoryu, on 09/12/2008, -2/+15Loving your country means acknowledging what's wrong with it and striving to fix it.
- Manther, on 09/12/2008, -2/+14@manstein - Please provide proof that notque is blaming the US for everything going wrong.
USA is not the worlds guardian angel that ignorant Americans hooked on Fox news seem to think it is. Try watching a real news station (BBC), hear the story from all sides, find out why both parties are taking the actions they are, and then try to show your new found intelligence in future comments. Right now you sound like an ignorant redneck douchebag who would probably vote for G.W. Bush again if you could. - notque, on 09/12/2008, -11/+22http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2002/apr/21/usa.ve ...

http://www.democracynow.org/2004/11/29/cia_documen ... - jessehadden, on 09/12/2008, -4/+15Love the country, hate the government.
The problem is, you know how people over here don't make a distinction between words like "Iran" and "Iraq," and the millions of innocent people just living their lives inside those borders? And we rationalize atrocities with de-personalizing words like "collateral damage?" Well, people in other countries also fail to make that distinction with us, and have just as de-personalized a concept of what being an "American" is. They equate our appallingly psychotic violent control-freak behavior in other countries with "America."
That's why people will automatically hate you for being an American. You can blame them, or you can blame the government that's giving them a good reason. - inactive, on 09/12/2008, -21/+32that's the attitude that put your dollar where it is now on the global scale.
keep it up. - legendxx, on 09/12/2008, -23/+34Seems like hating America is the cool thing to do these days
- unhap, on 09/12/2008, -8/+18You do not understand. The people vote against Chavez but he changes election results. He gives small changes to make it look like he cares, but when we voted against him for President he changes the results so that he could be President.
YOU do not tell ME about MY country and MY Election. I do not tell YOU about YOUR country and YOUR election.
Accion Democratica was bad too, but that does not mean that Huge Chavez is good. The majority does not choose Huge Chavez, like I said he changes elections. - thefarouk, on 09/12/2008, -10/+20No, he only leads the country from which we import the most crude oil, so clearly he doesn't matter...
Play more spore and grow your brain - YodaJones, on 09/12/2008, -12/+22Why can't Americans mind their own business?
- RIB08, on 09/12/2008, -10/+20I just saw McCain and Palin released a joint press release that Venezuela is now the world's largest host of terrorists and that Islamic Extremists have relocated there but that Iran is also the largest harborer as well. Furthermore, Palin's experience with natural gas makes her uniquely suited to handle this new terrorist crisis.
Threat level has also been raised to very very dark red. Almost Maroon. - pigfarts, on 09/12/2008, -0/+10The U.S. government has an ugly history of usurping democratically elected South American leaders and replacing them with puppet regimes. Our government cares less about democracy in S.A than they do about empowering people who will march to the beat of Washington's drum. Even if that means putting a nasty dictator in power.
I agree Chavez is not an ideal leader for the Venezuelan people, but he has every right to be pissed at the U.S. - BadseedJR, on 09/12/2008, -3/+12Wow... reading your last 2 comments, I realize you are mostly clueless. You obviously didn't catch that the Saudis walked out of OPEC and told the rest of the countries that they will meet the demand for oil from anyone who wants it. Saudi Arabia has a ton more oil than Venezuela, and Brazil just found a crap load they are ready to send to whoever wants it also. So... no, beerock, nobody will get bent over.
- Lucas123, on 09/12/2008, -1/+10You know that Chavez is also a harsh critic of neoliberalism and globalization?
- pintomp3, on 09/12/2008, -4/+13they want to run their own countries without us overthrowing their governments or funding guerrillas. is that so much to ask?
- arjie, on 09/12/2008, -3/+12FutureGuy, it is. Ever since Chavez came to power he has put many important moves to a referendum. One of the first things he did was to have a referendum limiting his own power. Some of these referendums have been rejected by the people.
A lot of the people here commenting about democracy have no clue, especially those from the US, which has the most twisted form of indirect representation you can imagine. Take the beam out of your eye, hypocrites. - marc123, on 09/12/2008, -6/+15an ***** compared to who? bush? cheney? mccain? rove? i dont think so... he just so happens to be one of the world's few truly principled and brave leaders. I wish we had a Chavez in the UK instead of the bunch of clowns both parties are led by.
Unfortunately in this world most politicians are spineless servants of power that's how they got there in the first place. - noots, on 09/12/2008, -9/+18I realize this is a predominantly American website, but it's a bit ironic how most of the people here and slating Chavez when i consider Bush to be far far worse.
Chavez has done more good for Venezuela than Bush has ever done for the US. - forcedfx, on 09/12/2008, -6/+15I think I'm gonna believe the guy that lives there.
- LeRenard, on 09/12/2008, -5/+14How come every time there is an article about Chavez they accompany it with pictures of Carlos Mencia?
- notque, on 09/12/2008, -4/+12We are not the government. We are fighting the government, not the population. Our government commits war crimes and terrorism.
- IHaveCrayons, on 09/12/2008, -1/+9You guys are hilarious. There's no way the US would go to war with Venezuela, how idiotic can you be. Hell there's no way the US will go to war even with Iran. Now... using proxy guerillas... that's a different story.
- Laminarcissus, on 09/12/2008, -3/+11Yeah ***** 'em, if he doesn't like us then we just won't buy his damn oil.
And while I'm at it, ***** my heroin dealer too. - homelinux, on 09/12/2008, -4/+12It's amazing how most people here don't realize that what both Chavez and Evo Morales are doing is trying to shift the attention from the real problems their respective countries are facing. There's no place in this continent more f*ed up than Venezuela (not even Haiti). My job is to travel to South America so I know a little bit. This strategy is not new, is what Castro has been using for the last 50 years. Blame someone else for your problems, make people believe that the enemy is not within (when in fact it is). Just recently, the FAA announced that they cannot guarantee the security of flights originating in Caracas because they have been denied access to the protocols. Guess who's not flying there any time soon?
- JasonCox, on 09/12/2008, -1/+9Tell me about. Ever since Fidel stopped their bi-weekly photo-ops we've hardly heard a peep from this guy- besides his occasional outbursts talking about smelling sulfur.
