- valleyvideo, on 10/11/2007, -6/+45I don't quite get how whether or not Al-Qaeda inspired or had a direct hand in it matters. Same way I don't understand why the fact that the bombs turned out to be duds mattered. There was still a group of folks who attempted to make four car bombs. The success or failure of the bombs and any connection to Al-Qaeda isn't what I'd be worried about if I lived or worked in the targeted areas (or cared about the lives of other human beings.) We're all savvy enough to know that the media blows things out of porportion, but how do we deal with these disenfrancised folks?
- dukeeeey, on 10/11/2007, -9/+41"Today Americans would be outraged if U.N. troops entered Los Angeles to restore order; tomorrow they will be grateful! This is especially true if they were told there was an outside threat from beyond whether real or promulgated, that threatened our very existence. It is then that all peoples of the world will pledge with world leaders to deliver them from this evil. The one thing every man fears is the unknown. When presented with this scenario, individual rights will be willingly relinquished for the guarantee of their well being granted to them by their world government."

- insomniacal, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19Buried for the inaccurate Digg title. It's not the _attacks_ that were the big media scare, it was the reporting. The attacks did occur.
Thinking otherwise is no different from thinking 9/11 was just a big media scare. - gossipninja, on 10/11/2007, -8/+22I could care less if the terrorists were al-qaeda, or white supremists, or dumb bored kids, they were TERRORISTS who were attempted to cause grievous bodily harm and DEATH to people. Obviously this is no criminally masterminded plot like 9/11, but terrorism doesnt need to be, look at Israel, they live in fear of some ***** straping a bomb to their chest and going to a cafe, there is no larger plot, that terrorist doesnt necessarily have a handler. Big or small, lone gunman, or cell operator, terrorism is big deal. I was shocked when the JFK airport thing wasnt reported by some big media outlets (new york times buried it, http://www.newsmax.com/archives/ic/2007/6/4/110440.shtml?s=ic)
- 2gig, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14Anyone else find it mildly ANNOYING that they need to CAPITALIZE the name of the NEWSPAPER all the TIME?
- mb309, on 12/31/2008, -1/+14Yeah, because the second attempted tube bombing in London was a roaring success....
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/crime/article1415300.ece - Elohir, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13How does some tentative connections to Al Queda make the whole thing 'just a big media scare'?
There were three attempts (no matter how comedic) at detonating bombs in public places ffs. That's not a 'big media scare', that's BOMBS IN PUBLIC PLACES.
Stupid submission, buried. - digghasnoethics, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14Tension in the air?
Nope, that's just rain.
Brits don't tend to get worried about bombs, especially such poor duds as these. - Kohath, on 10/11/2007, -12/+24Yeah, terrorism is all fake. Nevermind the explosions and the corpses.
- Donald2007, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12I agree...I think too much emphasis is placed on whether or not they were al Qaeda.
Remember the Beslan schoolhouse massacre? The terror attack on the Moscow subway? (And, for that matter, the attacks on trains in Madrid, Israel, and . . . London).
100,000+ victims of Islamic terror in Algeria (the media ignores that).
The bombings of tourist resorts in Egypt. Remember Bali? The burnings of churches in Nigeria and Egypt.
Numerous horrendous massacres in India and Kashmir....and the murders of Buddhist monks and teachers in Thailand.
All of these were carried out by Islamic extremists...does it really matter if some (or all...or, for that matter, none) were carried out by al Qaeda? Th fact is, they are horrendous acts..part of a larger, worldwide pattern of attacks by Islamic extremists-- whatever formal organization the perpetrators do or do not belong to is really quite irrelevant... - barc0de, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Most "Al Qaeda" attacks are carried out by groups with no connection to Osama Bin Laden. They just appropriated the name and methods (multiple concurrent attacks, no warning, killing many). Its not like the good old days of the IRA, with a central command council issuing orders. Its really more of a meme, at most a franchise operation.
- hplasm, on 10/11/2007, -6/+17The Register's in-house Bomb Disposal Guy sums it all up quite nicely here:-
http://www.theregister.com/2007/07/02/terror_idiocy_outbreak/ :) - SpaceMonkeyZero, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12No it doesn't matter because some people need a way to blame their own governments for everything.
- tizz66, on 10/11/2007, -10/+20AlQueda is an *idea*, nothing else. Yes, Bin Laden has a crew around him, but it's still an idea not an organisation.
- ChayD, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10I guess it may be due to experience gained from previous bomb threats from the IRA, which were alarmingly regular in the 70s and 80s.
- SpaceMonkeyZero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10You're being taken by Mexico and you don't even realize it.
- SpaceMonkeyZero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10I'm not terrorized by my government.
Prove to me that you are. - MiNGLED, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10At the moment the only armed police I've seen are at major train stations and airports, not on the streets. Other than that, it all seams pretty normal in London. We've been through this before and most people just carry on as normal.
- REBELinBLUE, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Can't say I've seen any police about. When they said there was police at all major stations I expected some at Clapham Junction (apparently the busiest station in the country) and I have not seen a single one all week. Can't say there has been any tension either, the biggest concern right now, the ridiculous weather. Even after the July 7th bombings, for the most part people just "got on with it", British stiff upper lip and all that. You have to remember the UK had years of IRA bombings, so these are just the latest in a long line of whack jobs, we didn't let the IRA scare us, we certainly aren't going to let these nutcases.
- repins, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11How do you explain the "Those who cure you will kill you" comments made by a known Al Queda member months ago to a priest in Jordan?
- gregcotten, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8OK But they were still terror attacks, right? Not invented by the media, which the title here suggests.
- Donald2007, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10"having some war in some far off country". Are you saying that you believe the Brits aren't involved in Iraq?
- profOblivion, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11I bet Al Qaeda isn't complaining. They're creating fear in the public and not even having to do anything.
- zabouth, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Form the point of view of the average person form the UK who has been livening with terror attacks for over 30 years what with the IRA. (although the IRA did always send out a warning to the press before hand in). This was quit a funny attack I mean one of the guys set him self on fire and his bomb did not go off. Plus the normal reaction to a bomb going off in the UK is very understated we read it think that's sad then forget within a week.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10Unless I'm mistaken there is no 'downplaying stupidity' going on here. If there is no evidence that al-Qaeda were directly involved, then that should be made clear.
However, it should also be noted that there is no worldwide organisation called al-Qaeda, more it is a network of organisations with similar goals, much like the UN is a network of organisations.
And we are a lot more used to dealing with terrorists on our own soil than the average American, and we should understand better than most the stupidity of fear-mongering and panic-filled attacks. - asdfasdfasdfasd, on 10/11/2007, -11/+18This is a classic knee-jerk reaction from the left. The story isn't a week old, yet, being the terrorism experts they are, declare Al Queda had no influence whatsoever. There is nothing wrong with speculating whether or not Al Queda had a hand, but why is the left so quick to exculpate them? It's as if they are defending them. No, wait, they ARE defending them.
- SpaceMonkeyZero, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8And that's the way Osama wants it. He wants them loosely affiliated with no direct links so that apologists can claim that he had nothing to do with it, and that the attackers were just poor, and uneducated victims...
- Donald2007, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Are you saying that you think Muslims are a distinct...race? That they can't be..."white"???
Actually, Islam is not a race. It is a religion...Muslims can be any race (In fact, Osama looks rather Caucasian, doesn't he?) - Hortnon, on 10/11/2007, -12/+19"British intelligence authorities have told RAW STORY that the three attacks, two failed and one almost successful, do appear to be connected. However, they could not attribute the attacks directly to Al Qaeda at this point in the investigation."
The truthers won't be happy, Jones was wrong again... - michaelinnotts, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I ***** hate the Raw Story. This is perfect fodder for all the negative stereotypes about liberals that the right holds true. To quote the Raw Story's own quote of PM Brown: "Al Qaeda and people who are related to Al Qaeda and while I don't want to comment on the police investigation that is ongoing, it is clear that we are dealing in general terms with people who are associated with, with Al Qaeda in a number of incidents that have happened all across the world."
In other words, Al Qaeda and people associated with Al Qaeda are being dealt with in relation to the attacks. The Raw Story's source contradicts its own hyperbolic, misleading rhetoric.
Perhaps this wouldn't piss me off so much if the Raw Story, really Fox News for the left, didn't get dugg up so much. - TheCatsPants, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Em, your girlfriend is way more likely to be mugged by some knuckle-dragging, shell-suited chavs in Glasgow than involved in any terrorist attacks.
- BohicaTwentyTwo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Incompetence is not a defense for attempted murder.
- neodem, on 10/11/2007, -10/+17The thing to note is how well British law enforcement authorities have been doing stopping terrorism as opposed to having some war in some far off country. Terrorism as it has been perpetrated in most of its history can be easily combated with good law enforcement operations as opposed to having some nebulous "war on terror".
- SpaceMonkeyZero, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8They weren't citizens. These would-be bombers were recent immigrants.
- spyrochaete, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8Spike the BBQ sauce with strychnine and Texas will fold faster than you can say Mesquite.
- lazyrussian, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10From what I remember seeing/ and reading last weekend, the anchors said that the bombs were made by amateurs and probably not related to Al Qaaeda or any other well-known organization. Personally, knowing just that, I didn't think it was AL--Qaeda.
I recieved this information MSNBC and FOX (TV), and BBC (Online) - Donald2007, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6What, exactly, is the stereotype of a terrorist? (Or, perhaps more importantly, what in reality, are terrorists like? Are they all...living in poverty? http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/11/07/60minutes/main582487.shtml) .
Not doctors? Have you heard of Dr. Abdel Aziz al-Rantissi ? (founder of Hamas...)
Or bin Laden: "Bin Laden may have studied economics and business administration[15] at the Management and Economics School of King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah. Bin Laden has informal training in Islamic jurisprudence, is considered "well versed in the classical scriptures and traditions of Islam"[21] and has been mentored by scholars such as Musa al-Qarni. In terms of personality, bin Laden is described as a soft-spoken, mild mannered man;[32] and despite his rhetoric, he is said to be charming, polite, and respectful." And... he is (was?) extremely wealthy. - c0ldfusi0n, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Yet we see "Terror" and "Al-Qaida" in the description.
- tizz66, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6MI5 had no prior knowledge of any of these before they happened. No chatter whatsoever. That's not a criticism, we can't expect them to know everything going on, but I'm just making it clear that MI5 didn't have a role in this. If anyone should be congratulated, it's the police.
- RickySan65, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Ehm.. yeah.. did you pay any attention to the news?, they're not English, they are from abroad, they studied here, but they are certainly not british citizens..
- Dr.Finger, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8They tried to detonate three bombs in major metropolitan areas. That is the textbook definition of terrorism. Saying its a media scare means you don't think this was an attempted terror attack.
- Donald2007, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Well.. I suppose some people think that Pearl Harbor was just one big "media scare"...(and no plane hit the Pentagon..w.e actually never landed on the moon, those photos were faked..., etc, etc, etc)
- Tippis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6No-one, unless you like support the terrorists ;)
- SteelFrog, on 10/11/2007, -8/+13My girlfriend is on vacation in London and was moving to Glasgow the day after the car bomb attacks. Needless to say, we were all pretty worried.
From what she's told me, it's pretty quiet but the streets are filled with policemen armed with assault and automatic rifles. She says that there is definitely some tension in the air, but that the locals aren't too worried about it.
I hope she'll be able to fly back without too many problems tomorrow. - Mockylock, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Seems as if the downplay of terrorist plots are what is being blown out of proportion. It may have not been al-qaeda, but the idealism is still there.
It's not as if you close your eyes, they're going to go away. - Donald2007, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7I suppose next we will hear that 7/7 never happened....(it was just a "big media scare")
- piwy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4So... What's with all the RAW STORY self branding in the story. We kind of get it if you just say "our reporter" or just "Raw Story", all caps and red color is kind of unnecessary.
- qazz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Murder's do not need to be competent to succeed, they just have to kill people. Reporting on the hatred and plans of evil people may scare you, but it should be covered.
