Teen avoids prison time in sister's 'Mortal Kombat' death

9news.com — Seventeen-year-old Heather Trujillo was given an 18-year suspended sentence in the death of 7-year-old Zoe Garcia. However, she must spend six years in the youth offender program. If she does not violate the terms of her plea deal, she will not have to spend any time in prison.

I can guarantee if this was reversed it would be completely different story. The girl friend would have gotten off with probation and the brother would have been sent to jail for life. You have a responsibility to your younger siblings and in my mind she is way more guilty than her boyfriend.

Now, I'm not sure if this is the norm, but everyone I know stopped acting out movies/TV shows/video games/etc. before we were even teenagers. More importantly, they're way past the point of knowing better than to beat up someone ten years younger than them, and even if they were "just playing" they should be able to tell when they're hurting someone, especially bad enough to kill her. Both of them deserve nothing less than the maximum allowed punishment.

    Apparently, hitting and punching a 7 year-old until she falls unconscious and dies is "goofing off." Good to know. The next time my daughter savagely beats her younger brother I'll just say, "Stop goofing off." That'll teach her.

    The prosecutor's rationale was that Tate "knew exactly what he was doing." Presumably a 14-year old boy knows exactly what he is doing, but Ms. Trujillo did not?

    You know what, if you don't have enough common sense to think 'oh, she's a 7-year-old little girl and much smaller than we are', then you deserve prison time. I don't care if it was an accident or not, two fully grown people wrestling with a small child in complete stupidity. And body slamming her? That deserves a smack on the head.

    This sounds like a case of them getting drunk and beating the girl to the point of death.
    The story even states that drinking had occured and that family members had noticed bruises on the little girl from previous incidents.
    Next thing we'll see is some stupid ass lawyer try and pin midway and Mortal Kombat for the death of the kids and repremand the game from being sold anymore. It's a damn good thing that they're not liable.

    For example. if I'm cleaning my gun and it goes off once and hits you. That could be an accident. If I'm cleaning my gun and it goes off ten times... Its a little harder to believe thats still an accident.

This isn't 2 kids the same age roughousing and acting out a video game or pro Wrestling and 'ooops' someone got hurt -- it was an assault on a child. An assault on a child leading to death SHOULD equal jail time, there are no 'extenuating circumstances' there.
